Male small mayfly, Baetinae, Baetidae

Male small mayflies in the family Baetidae differ from females in that they have seven eyes rather than five - 3 simple eyes, 2 compound eyes,and 2 turbinate eyes on top of the head. These upward-facing eyes are thought to be used for spotting females during aerial mating.

Looks like an actual fairy. Pretty wings, stripy double tail, funky double eyes...

Did river invert sampling today! It was very cool, also got to see some very nice inverts other than the river ones, and maybe some planarians that aren't pictured here since I couldn't get them off the rock I saw them on

To be honest I have no idea who these guys are beyond identifying them all to Ephemeropterans. I’d need a microscope on the skinny ones because they could be Baetidae, Siphlonuridae, Isonychiidae, Leptophlebiidae, or like five more families. The chunky one though I’m sure will be easier to figure out. The labrum is a diagnostic part of their head area and these pictures do not show it well. I’d love any assistance on identification.

Those three little strings on their butts are a characteristic of mayfly larvae that are hard to see unless they’re spread out. When you’re catching them, they’re often all stuck together as a weird long tail. They can flick that tail around and move it, which is very cute to watch. I had some videos of it but I spoke in them so I feel weird posting them.

i also have a picture of one of my favorite macroinvertebrates: a mayfly nymph of the Baetidae family!! ill put it below a readmore in case you do not like bugs (though to be pedantic they aren't bugs, theyre Ephemenoptera and only Hemiptera are true bugs :D)

i really like them cuz whenever im doing a macroinvertebrate survey its really fun to lift up a rock and just see a little guy clinging to it all flattened and such. theyre very cute to me. their family is so small when they grow up that theyre called the small mayflies (and also the minnow mayflies)!

Had she wanted impact she was sure she could have walked into the Winter Palace wearing nothing but her skin. And in a way, the way that one looks into the abyss and feels its call, it did sound deliciously fun. It is that fun that gleams from the bright smile beneath the mask that she wore.

Green eyes move from Estel to one of the elven servants that was moving carefully across the floor. Her cup of wine is untouched when she drops it in the shiny tray. Oh she wanted to drink it but she felt that would do nothing about how unsettling familiar this all was; how much of a nightmare this felt. She had feared to return to Orlais after her departure, never having truly imagined that she would have found herself as a guest. She was far from the one in the spotlight and that is how she wanted to maintain it. The wine had nothing to do with it, but it would serve no purpose either.

On the other hand she held a peach. There weren’t many nor did she really think that this section of Orlais grew them. Or if it was even something that they had. Delicious and rare and a fruit that she too associated with the very few times where she was able to attend these parties. Rarer still that she was able to partake in eating them. Last time she had walked halls such as these, she was a servant and the food was not for people like her. Didn’t mean that she didn’t end up tasting them, however.

In a smooth motion, Maxima places the peach in his hands. Her chin comes to her shoulder as she starts to walk away from the cloaked figure. Estel should not truly be there, though she appreciated the company and the salve on the eyes for the moment. She was both glad and worried that she would not be privy to the on-goings outside of the main stage. Were the Inquisition successful, then she would know only when she was well on her way to Skyhold. 

If not, well... it would truly be an impactful evening.

   “Perhaps I shall save a dance for you?” she hums, the same smile growing to a point. A brief whisper as she walked away, turning on her heels with one hand careful to hold the deep emerald green dress. She continues walking with a wink, the same deliciously fun smile on her lips as the distance between them increased “Why, what a scandal that would be...“

Yes, it’s normal! Mayflies will emerge starting in early spring and going into fall. Exactly when depends on species an weather. This lil cutie looks like a male small mayfly in the family Baetidae.
