If my requirements are fairly pedestrian - I'm probably not going to be doing anything much heavier than 1080p youtube - but I care a lot about battery life and a decently sized screen (15" or 16," and bright) where do you suggest I go looking?

I have a gut feeling that I should probabl- (the letter is roughly torn here, possibly to prevent the asker from biasing the answer)

Honestly I'd start by looking at lists of laptops with the longest battery life. Someone asked me about this last year because they needed a long battery life for field work and I ended up finding an acer or something with like a 19 hour charge, and i think that came from a list of Cnet reviews.

A quick survey suggests that a lot of it is going to come down to budget; if you want to spend a whole lot of money and battery life is your top concern you're probably looking at a 16" macbook.

If you're looking at the lowest budget possible and battery life is your top concern, you're looking for a chromebook.

If you're looking to buy something in between expensive and cheap and you dislike Apple and Chromebooks then perhaps you are looking at a 2-in-1 (the HP 360 has 15.6" screens available and 12-14 hours depending on the model).

If I wanted to look for a laptop that was a real computer (meaning I could upgrade in the future and install whatever software I wanted on it) I'd probably be looking at the Dell Latitude or an HP Elitebook, both of which have models with battery life in the 14-15 hour range (which drops significantly if it's doing full video playback, but that's also true of any computer's measured battery life).

Got a quote back from Acer and it'll be over eight hundred fucking dollars to repair my computer. I've had this computer for...maybe a year and a half? And I started having issues with the power port months ago. So eight hundred dollars (realistically close to a thousand after tax and shipping costs) to maybe make it last another year until it breaks again.

What really sucks is that I got this computer for gaming. Which I haven't been doing much the past year because I got heavily into writing a fanfic. (and now because the power port is fucked and will overheat if I try to run literally anything other than a web browser) So I essentially bought a $1200 TMNT fanfiction machine.

(gonna rant because I have nobody else to vent to) And tomorrow I have to go to a fucking baseball game. I know that makes me sound like a spoiled brat, but I don't fucking like baseball. My sister got my mom tickets for her birthday and I felt like I had to. I don't like baseball, I don't like crowds, and my phone battery is not going to last the whole game.

I tried to get out of it but my sister was like "I don't like baseball either but it's okay! We'll drink beer and have a ton of fun!" Yeah, I'm sure you will. My mom and my sister are both extroverts. When they're together they talk constantly, talk over me, or just flat out ignore me. (and then accuse me of being antisocial because I do something else, rather than just...sit there and listen to their conversation rapaciously, I guess) Plus my sister's bringing two of her friends. Who are nice people, I like them, but still. So I'm just going to be fucking sitting there awkwardly while everyone talks around me. For hours.

Also today my mom's like "We'll get there early and take the rail! We'll just walk around for an hour, there will be so much do DO and SEE!" It's a giant fucking cattle run for people. We've been there before. Yes, we can go look at the exact same shirts they sell at Target, marked up 300%. How interesting.

Hi! I WFH and write a lot in my spare time (both taking online classes and just trying to bang out a novel) and am looking for a laptop that will support that (i.e. robust battery life, able to handle hours of typing and having internet tabs open) - any recs? Friends IRL have recced MacBooks and ThinkPads, thoughts on those? Chromebooks seem a little too lightweight.

Chromebooks are probably too lightweight, I do not recommend macs because they are not typically user-serviceable, and I do very much like thinkpads! I have a thinkpad, it's my second thinkpad in a row and they're geat.

A while back someone asked about battery life and price and it turned out the best combo was a little Acer that came in at just under $600 - that computer should meet all your needs, though I would recommend trying to find one with 16GB RAM instead of 8GB.

as you might have noticed, it has a somewhat strange layout, and doesn't have a wire coming out of the back. that's because this keyboard is actually just a really big remote control; you put 4 AA batteries in the back, and it communicates with the set top box via infrared signals, just like the standard remote control would.

of course, our set top box eventually outlived its usefulness, and all of this stuff went into a storage cupboard, whereupon it was promptly forgotten about… until a few months ago, when i rediscovered the keyboard whilst my dad was clearing out some old things. as you might expect, i saved it from being sent to silicon heaven (where all the calculators go) because i am a goblin who hoards old technology.

i put it to one side for a while, but a few days ago i decided to see if it was still working. it turns out that regular webcams can pick up infrared light, so i put some batteries in it and -- success! -- several white-ish lights were visible in my laptop's webcam app whenever i pressed a key.

as such, i think it would be cool to somehow get this thing working as an actual PC keyboard. i might need to write a custom program to do this, though it seems that it might Just Work.

of course, i'd need some kind of infrared receiver device to do that, and those can be surprisingly tricky to find:

there are plenty of "infrared extender" cables online, but their USB connector is only used to draw power; they don't actually show up as a "device" on your PC.

you can apparently get infrared-receiver-to-headphone jack cables, which you're supposed to plug into a special socket on certain set top boxes… though in theory you could plug them into the microphone input port of a PC and "manually" decode the data signal via software trickery. (disclaimer: i am not an expert on Hardware, so this might be A Bad Idea, but i think that the 5V output by the microphone port would be enough to power the IR receiver…?)

the thing i actually want (an IR-to-USB device) might as well not exist because it is no longer 2005 and no-one on the planet except me gives even half a shit about connecting an IR device to a PC. well, that's not entirely true -- but the things i did find cost £30-£50, which is way above what i'd want to spend on something like this.

eventually, though, i discovered that the magic phrase to search for is "Media Center IR receiver" (or, more simply, "MCE receiver"), whereupon i found someone selling an Acer MCEIR-210 on ebay for just over £10. its due to arrive here within the next few days, so hopefully i can make this somewhat-unusual device function again.

Stage 1 Complete, Onward to Stage 2!

I did it! I finished my course... thing! I learned some stuff, and also some things! I feel no farther along in my learning of Japanese! Wait, what? Yeah... I don't know. I suppose I feel farther along, and practice is great. I still have no idea how to actually hold a conversation, which was more or less the *point* in my mind. Thank the gods for Google Translate XD

Anywho, I'm at Stage 2 of my explorations - a WorkAway in a house that needs a significant amount of renovation. It has... a *lot* of odd problems, especially considering that it's not that old (1992!). Just... weird design choices made at the time of construction, and some very questionable concepts implemented that now have to be undone.

The shinkansen was fast. Like, plane-on-the-ground kind of fast. Sadly, I did not have a window seat, so not many pics worthy of posting from that trip. A surprising amount of it was in tunnels, as well. I think the neatest site was coming out of a tunnel to see a traditional-looking village nestled in a valley between mountains. It was really cool.

And now I'm here. Behold, a new desk. A new home-away-from-home, for a while.

PS: In the process of writing this, my laptop decided that it'd had enough of this life. Basically, just decided to shut off while I was still on the first paragraph. Doesn't seem to be the battery, and I've cleaned it out thoroughly and renewed the thermal paste. So... yeah. Kind of at a loss on it, hoping it's not RAM. Getting parts here is... interesting. Currently, borrowing my WorkAway hosts' Lenovo ThinkPad summat or other. Works for now, but not a permanent solution. I'm gonna tear the old Acer apart again and make sure the thermal paste spread properly, but if that doesn't do it... then what? If you have thoughts, please advise. Cheeribees!
