4 habits that will change your life ✨

istighfar x100 a day

i cannot stress enough how powerful istighfar is. when i first started doing this x100 a day, i almost told my therapist i don't need therapy anymore because life suddenly got so much better lol. obviously, that didn't last because life isn't consistent and stable like that. nonetheless, istighfar protects you, it gives you strength through Allah's Mercy, it brings you closer to Him, it grants you peace and happiness. it doesn't take too long to do 100 times a day. just sit there after a prayer, i picked fajr, and recite 'astagfirullah' on your fingers like you would usually do tasbih after salah, or use beads etc. it takes about 5 minutes of your day and will change your life. try it every day for 1 week and see what happens.

dhikr when you wake up and before you go to bed

by doing this, you're starting and ending your day with the remembrance of Allah. my grandma used to say that the way you start your morning determines the rest of your day. it's also scientifically proven that the first thing your brain gets dopamine from is what your brain is going to look for the rest of the day. for eg, if you go on your phone as soon as you wake up, you're more likely to be tapping your phone, scrolling, going on your phone for the rest of the day. because it sets the tone!

so, if you start your day with the remembrance of Allah, not only are you getting blessings for it and improving your relationship with Him, but you'll set the tone for the rest of the day and will probably be more inclined to do dhikr later on too. i can testify that it definitely works. it's the best way to get your day started.

and when you end with dhikr, it's the same thing but in reverse--a peaceful way to end the day, easier to fall asleep and a great way to feel connected to Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ. it's also scientifically proven that the condition you fall asleep in usually stays with the person all night. think about a time you've had such a good day/night and you fall asleep happy. did you wake up feeling good? what about when you've fallen asleep crying or upset? maybe the sleep was so good after but did you still wake up happy? so, if you go to sleep in a state of remembering Allah, you'll likely wake up in that state too.

now think about the benefits of doing dhikr as you go to bed and wake up every single day. you'll always be in a state of the remembrance of Allah! the Prophet ﷺ used to recite the last three surah's of the qur'an, ayatul kursi and the last two verses of surah baqarah. you can do any dhikr you'd like, 'subhanallah wa bihamdi' or 'alhamdulillah' or 'astagfirullah'. pick whatever you like.

surah mulk before bed

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"There is a surah in the Qur'an, with thirty verses, which will intercede for its companion (the one who recites it) until he is forgiven: Tabarakal-ladhi bi yadihil mulk (Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion)." - Surah Mulk (Sunan Ibn Majah 3786)

surah mulk has lots of benefits, and Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (one of the companions of our beloved Prophet ﷺ) narrated that “whoever recites Surah al-Mulk every night, Allah will prevent the punishment of grave by this Surah”. 

so clearly, there are a lot of benefits by reciting this surah that we will thank ourselves for in the next life - preparing for our akhirah (afterlife) is very important. you'll also end your day with the remembrance of Allah and have the specific reminder through this surah that everything belongs to Allah and is under His control. it helps me have nice dreams too.

it's not very long, it has 30 verses so it won't take a really long time.

learning a new surah bimonthly

this helps you build a relationship with the Qur'an and is a nice challenge for you to incorporate into your life. i recommend reading the translation and commentary of the surah first, so that you don't simply memorise it but know what it's about, what Allah is trying to say with the chapter and how you can live by it. but incorporating the memorisation of Allah's words into your life is a gamechanger: you'll build a bond with Allah, with the Qur'an and also with your salah too. because it's always exciting to be able to recite a new surah in your prayers - being able to do that multiple times a year is great.

start small and you will turn these all of these into habits. remember that the Prophet ﷺ said that 'the best of deeds are those which are done consistently, even if it is a little' (Sunan Ibn Majah 4240). what do we call things that are done consistently? habits!

start with one and do it every day for 30 days. then keep going and slowly add another once the first one has become fully established as a habit. sometimes we want to rush and do everything all at once and change our lives overnight. that's the worst thing to do because you'll either never do it or, you will start, then become so overwhelmed with so many new things to do that the habits won't stay and won't be long term. don't worry, we have our whole lives :) start slow and your life will change for the better. may Allah make it easy for us all, Ameen ♡

Ubayy bin Ka’b (radiAllahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah’s Book is the greatest? I said: ‘Allah and His messenger know best.’He (peace be upon him) again said: ‘Do you know which Ayah in Allah’s Book, according to you, is the greatest?’ I (Abu Mundhir) replied: ‘It is ‘Allah la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum’.[2:255].

আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়ার অনেক উপকার

আবু হুরায়রা (রা.)-র বরাতে এ হাদিসের বর্ণনা আছে।

তিনি বলেছেন, একবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) আমাকে রমজানের জাকাত–ফিতরা দেখাশোনা করার দায়িত্ব দেন। মূলত আমি পাহারা দিচ্ছিলাম। এ সময় একজন এসে খাদ্যদ্রব্য চুরি করতে লাগল। আমি তাকে পাকড়াও করে বললাম, ‘তোমাকে অবশ্যই রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

সে বলল, ‘আমি একজন সত্যিকারের অভাবী। পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। আমার দারুণ অভাব।’ কাজেই আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

 সকালে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির হয়েছি। রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘হে আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে কেমন আচরণ করেছ?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে তার অভাব ও (অসহায়) পরিবার-সন্তানের অভিযোগ জানাল। এ কারণে তার প্রতি দয়া হওয়ায় আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

আমি রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কথা শুনে নিশ্চিত হলাম যে সে আবার আসবে। কাজেই আমি তার প্রতীক্ষায় থাকলাম। সে এসে আবারও খাদ্যবস্তু নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে বললাম, ‘অবশ্যই তোমাকে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

 সে বলল, ‘আমি অভাবী, পরিবারের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। (আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও,) আমি আর আসব না।’ তাতে আমার মনে দয়া হলো। আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে উঠে যখন রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম, তখন তিনি আমাকে বললেন, ‘আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘ইয়া রাসুলুল্লাহ! সে তার অভাব ও অসহায় সন্তান-পরিবারের অভিযোগ জানাল। তাই আমার মায়া লাগলে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

তিনি বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

তৃতীয়বার তার প্রতীক্ষায় রইলাম। সে আবারও খাদ্যদ্রব্য নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে ধরে বললাম, ‘এবার তোমাকে নবী (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির করবই। এটা তিনবারের মধ্যে শেষবার। ফিরে আসব না, এ কথা বলে তুমি আবার ফিরে এসেছ।’

 সে বলল, ‘তুমি আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও। আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার কারণে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন।’

 আমি বললাম, ‘সেগুলো কী?’

 সে বলল, ‘যখন তুমি (ঘুমানোর জন্য) বিছানায় যাবে, তখন আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়ে ঘুমাবে। তাহলে তোমার জন্য আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে একজন রক্ষক নিযুক্ত হবে। সকাল পর্যন্ত তোমার কাছে শয়তান আসতে পারবে না।’

তখন আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে আবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম। তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে বলেছে, আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার ফলে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন। এ কারণে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

 তিনি বললেন, ‘শব্দগুলো কী?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘সে আমাকে বলল, যখন তুমি বিছানায় শুতে যাবে, তখন শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়বে। সে আরও বলল, এর ফলে আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে সব সময় তোমার জন্য একজন রক্ষক নিযুক্ত থাকবে। সকাল পর্যন্ত তোমার কাছে শয়তান আসবে না।’

 এ কথা শুনে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘শোনো, সে নিজে ভীষণ মিথ্যাবাদী, তবে তোমাকে সত্য কথা বলেছে। হে আবু হুরায়রা, তুমি কি জানো, তিন রাত ধরে তুমি কার সঙ্গে কথা বলছিলে?’

আমি বললাম, ‘না তো।’

তিনি বললেন, ‘সে ছিল শয়তান।’

আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়ার অনেক উপকার

আবু হুরায়রা (রা.)-র বরাতে এ হাদিসের বর্ণনা আছে।

তিনি বলেছেন, একবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) আমাকে রমজানের জাকাত–ফিতরা দেখাশোনা করার দায়িত্ব দেন। মূলত আমি পাহারা দিচ্ছিলাম। এ সময় একজন এসে খাদ্যদ্রব্য চুরি করতে লাগল। আমি তাকে পাকড়াও করে বললাম, ‘তোমাকে অবশ্যই রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

সে বলল, ‘আমি একজন সত্যিকারের অভাবী। পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। আমার দারুণ অভাব।’ কাজেই আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

 সকালে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির হয়েছি। রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘হে আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে কেমন আচরণ করেছ?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে তার অভাব ও (অসহায়) পরিবার-সন্তানের অভিযোগ জানাল। এ কারণে তার প্রতি দয়া হওয়ায় আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

আমি রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কথা শুনে নিশ্চিত হলাম যে সে আবার আসবে। কাজেই আমি তার প্রতীক্ষায় থাকলাম। সে এসে আবারও খাদ্যবস্তু নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে বললাম, ‘অবশ্যই তোমাকে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

 সে বলল, ‘আমি অভাবী, পরিবারের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। (আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও,) আমি আর আসব না।’ তাতে আমার মনে দয়া হলো। আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে উঠে যখন রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম, তখন তিনি আমাকে বললেন, ‘আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘ইয়া রাসুলুল্লাহ! সে তার অভাব ও অসহায় সন্তান-পরিবারের অভিযোগ জানাল। তাই আমার মায়া লাগলে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

তিনি বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

তৃতীয়বার তার প্রতীক্ষায় রইলাম। সে আবারও খাদ্যদ্রব্য নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে ধরে বললাম, ‘এবার তোমাকে নবী (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির করবই। এটা তিনবারের মধ্যে শেষবার। ফিরে আসব না, এ কথা বলে তুমি আবার ফিরে এসেছ।’

 সে বলল, ‘তুমি আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও। আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার কারণে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন।’

 আমি বললাম, ‘সেগুলো কী?’

 সে বলল, ‘যখন তুমি (ঘুমানোর জন্য) বিছানায় যাবে, তখন আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়ে ঘুমাবে। তাহলে তোমার জন্য আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে একজন রক্ষক নিযুক্ত হবে। সকাল পর্যন্ত তোমার কাছে শয়তান আসতে পারবে না।’

তখন আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে আবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম। তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে বলেছে, আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার ফলে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন। এ কারণে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

 তিনি বললেন, ‘শব্দগুলো কী?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘সে আমাকে বলল, যখন তুমি বিছানায় শুতে যাবে, তখন শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়বে। সে আরও বলল, এর ফলে আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে সব সময় তোমার জন্য একজন রক্ষক নিযুক্ত থাকবে। সকাল পর্যন্ত তোমার কাছে শয়তান আসবে না।’

 এ কথা শুনে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘শোনো, সে নিজে ভীষণ মিথ্যাবাদী, তবে তোমাকে সত্য কথা বলেছে। হে আবু হুরায়রা, তুমি কি জানো, তিন রাত ধরে তুমি কার সঙ্গে কথা বলছিলে?’

আমি বললাম, ‘না তো।’

তিনি বললেন, ‘সে ছিল শয়তান।’

তিনি বলেছেন, একবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) আমাকে রমজানের জাকাত–ফিতরা দেখাশোনা করার দায়িত্ব দেন। মূলত আমি পাহারা দিচ্ছিলাম। এ সময় একজন এসে খাদ্যদ্রব্য চুরি করতে লাগল। আমি তাকে পাকড়াও করে বললাম, ‘তোমাকে অবশ্যই রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

সে বলল, ‘আমি একজন সত্যিকারের অভাবী। পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। আমার দারুণ অভাব।’ কাজেই আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

 সকালে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির হয়েছি। রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘হে আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে কেমন আচরণ করেছ?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে তার অভাব ও (অসহায়) পরিবার-সন্তানের অভিযোগ জানাল। এ কারণে তার প্রতি দয়া হওয়ায় আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.) বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

আমি রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কথা শুনে নিশ্চিত হলাম যে সে আবার আসবে। কাজেই আমি তার প্রতীক্ষায় থাকলাম। সে এসে আবারও খাদ্যবস্তু নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে বললাম, ‘অবশ্যই তোমাকে রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে নিয়ে যাব।’

 সে বলল, ‘আমি অভাবী, পরিবারের দায়িত্ব আমার ওপর। (আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও,) আমি আর আসব না।’ তাতে আমার মনে দয়া হলো। আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে উঠে যখন রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম, তখন তিনি আমাকে বললেন, ‘আবু হুরায়রা, গত রাতে তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

 আমি বললাম, ‘ইয়া রাসুলুল্লাহ! সে তার অভাব ও অসহায় সন্তান-পরিবারের অভিযোগ জানাল। তাই আমার মায়া লাগলে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

তিনি বললেন, ‘সতর্ক থেকো। সে আবার আসবে।’

তৃতীয়বার তার প্রতীক্ষায় রইলাম। সে আবারও খাদ্যদ্রব্য নিতে লাগল। আমি তাকে ধরে বললাম, ‘এবার তোমাকে নবী (সা.)–এর কাছে হাজির করবই। এটা তিনবারের মধ্যে শেষবার। ফিরে আসব না, এ কথা বলে তুমি আবার ফিরে এসেছ।’

 সে বলল, ‘তুমি আমাকে ছেড়ে দাও। আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার কারণে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন।’

 আমি বললাম, ‘সেগুলো কী?’

 সে বলল, ‘যখন তুমি (ঘুমানোর জন্য) বিছানায় যাবে, তখন আয়াতুল কুরসি পড়ে ঘুমাবে। তাহলে তোমার জন্য আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে একজন রক্ষক নিযুক্ত হবে। সকাল পর্যন্ত তোমার কাছে শয়তান আসতে পারবে না।’

তখন আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।

সকালে আবার রাসুলুল্লাহ (সা.)–এর কাছে গেলাম। তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তোমার বন্দী কেমন আচরণ করেছে?’

আমি বললাম, ‘হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, সে বলেছে, আমি তোমাকে এমন কিছু শব্দ শিখিয়ে দেব, যার ফলে আল্লাহ তোমার কল্যাণ করবেন। এ কারণে আমি তাকে ছেড়ে দিলাম।’

Upon reciting Ayatul Kursi, we become the witness of the supremacy of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) as we know that He’s Eternal and The Ever-Living who doesn’t fall into slumber and nor does he forget or ignore anything. Everything is in His knowledge and He’s the One who plans every event in the Universe.

The acceptance of His power and supremacy by reciting this verse gives the believer an immense peace that whatever comes their way, they will be able to tackle it with the help of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) as He will protect them from difficulties and stresses of life.

6 – Why You Should Recite Ayatul Kursi before Bed

When we lie on the bed, we are so tired that we immediately fall asleep or sometimes, use mobile phones and scroll aimlessly on social media. Then we complain of a restless night and a disturbed sleep.

Abu Huraira (RadiyAllahu ‘anhu) said, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) put me in charge of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e.,. Zakat-ul-Fitr). Someone came to me and started scooping some of the foodstuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told him that I would take him to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ.” Then Abu Huraira (RadiyAllahu ‘anhu) told the whole narration and added “He (i.e. the thief) said, ‘Whenever you go to your bed, recite the Verse of “Al-Kursi” (2.255) for then a guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not approach you till dawn.’ ” On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He told you the truth, though he is a liar, and he (the thief) himself was the Satan.”

When we start our day by scrolling through social media feeds and posting our morning routine, we should not hope to get a nice and fresh start to the day.

But today, we are so caught up in our life that when we wake up, worries and stress mingle in our minds, making us forget to thank Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) for another day. We should start our day by thanking Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) for letting us live another day and offering morning prayers. It is advised to recite Ayatul Kursi to keep ourselves protected against odd circumstances and unforeseen events. It keeps us away from any harm that may come us in any form.

3 – Protection of Wealth, Children and Home

When we leave the house to go somewhere, we are hesitant to leave it all alone. Our minds keep thinking about the things that could go wrong or someone might invade our house.

Similarly, when our children leave the house, we get anxious upon having them go out of our sight. We make countless phone calls to make sure they are doing well and reach their destination safely.

But, when we have the Kalaam and word of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), we should not worry about the safety of our wealth, children and home. Ayatul Kursi is the most powerful verse that builds a shield around them and protects them with the will of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala). No harm can be done under its protection until Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) wills it.

We must make it a habit of reciting it when leaving the house and blow it on our children regularly.

2 – The Greatest Knowledge

Knowledge is the greatest power, we have always heard and found it true. We read thousands and thousands of books to find the answers to the question that disrupts our curious minds. We find out such jewels of knowledge that we consider ourselves wiser than others.

The knowledge that we often run after belongs to this Faani world. We should also look for the pearls of wisdom that belong to our deen, find out what our Creator tells us to do and what makes Him Happy.

It is mentioned in a Hadith that learning Ayatul Kursi is acquiring the Greatest Knowledge as it is the greatest verse of the Holy Qur’an. Because it mentions the beautiful truth of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)’s supremacy and Omnipotence in the most Majestic way. We should always cherish it and adorn ourselves with this beautiful jewel.
