The U.S. electricity grid can handle much of the projected increase in demand from artificial intelligence data centers by becoming more flexible, which can reduce the need to build new power plants, a new analysis concludes.

Flexibility, in this case, means that grid operators would work with their largest customers to be better able to reduce electricity use at times of highest demand.

“The United States right now is in a very consequential economic race around artificial intelligence, and this paper suggests that these new mega loads can be added relatively quickly, if they’re able to embrace some degree of flexibility,” said Tyler Norris, a fellow at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.

He is lead author of the report, Rethinking Load Growth: Assessing the Potential for Integration of Large Flexible Loads in U.S. Power Systems, issued today by Duke’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability.

The report finds that the country’s regional grids have substantial headroom in generating capacity available to serve large new users. The key is for grid operators and large customers to work together to make short-term reductions in demand at times when the electricity supply is tightest.

The potential benefits are huge. The report finds that the country could add 76 gigawatts of new electricity demand—the equivalent of about 10 percent of the country’s peak demand—with existing grid resources if these new users were able to ramp down for 0.25 percent of time that they’re ordinarily active.

During the times that the large customers are ramping down, they could switch to short-term power sources they have on onsite, transfer computing work to other locations for a few hours or pause work.

Users wouldn’t have to ramp down for very long, with an average duration of less than two hours. By being able to do so, they would reduce the costs of the electricity system because there would be much less need to build new power plants.

Leading data center companies are already exploring ways that they can alter their electricity demand to respond to the availability of power and other market conditions, Norris said. ESSEC Business School and Accenture have announced the launch of a new initiative, ‘AI for Responsible Leadership,’ which marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the role of Chair at ESSEC, titled the ESSEC Accenture Strategic Business Analytics Chair.

The initiative aims to encourage the use of artificial intelligence by leaders in ways that are responsible and ethical, and that lead to high levels of professional performance. It aims to provide current and future leaders with the skills they require when faced with challenges in the future; economic, environmental, or social.

Several organisations support the initiative, including institutions, businesses, and specialised groups, including ESSEC Metalab for Data, Technology & Society, and Accenture Research.

But after being told essentially my entire life that school is THE way to go and college is THE place to be. After agonizing through highschool and being ridiculed by my fellow classmates to the point of being afraid to go outside because "I'd" Be in trouble for having the audacity to be angry about life.

After trying to fucking escape the education system and trying to get a skill, even if it's massage therapy. And then circumstance essentially botching that for me, and now I'm right back in the belly of that fucking beast??

I don't care. I don't care about academic integrity, I don't care that it'll "destroy" the world more than it's going to be. I want a fucking living. I barely believe getting a diploma is even going to get a job. And every day I get angrier and more exhausted and just filled to the brim with HATE over this god damn system that I never wanted to be a part of but essentially got shoehorned in due to being raised with the idea that it's the "right" thing to do.

I'm going to cheat, because the education system will cheat me if it gets the chance. I'm going to do whatever it fucking takes to get that diploma because the "greatest country" demands a paper that says your smarter than the average asshole in order to get a job for a skill set you could've learned in the god damn job.

I don't like it. I don't approve of it when I use it to functionally cheat my way through my classes.
