Bertalan Székely (Hungarian, 1835-1910) Woman of Eger, 1867 Hungarian National Gallery On 29 September, 1552, an army of 70,000 Turks gathered at Szolnok and went on to attack the castle of Eger. The defenders of the castle numbered all together 2000, including serfs with no understanding of warfare, and many women and children. Nevertheless, the defenders of the castle, under the leadership of István Dobó, repelled the attacks, and on 18 October, the Turks retreated from the castle. The most famous contemporary account of the heroic defence of the castle was Sebestyén “Lantos” Tinódi’s ballad of 1553, the Fight for the Castle of Eger. Mihály Horváth called attention to the role of women in the siege in his 19th -century work. In his composition, Bertalan Székely wanted to express the Hungarians’ disadvantage in the struggle, as he describes it in his journal. By depicting the central female figure with the attackers in front of her and the castle in flames behind her, he evokes a feeling of true heroism, while creating an eternal symbol of patriotic sacrifice. - Iván Boldizsár explains the historical background to Székely’s Women of Eger: “In the sixteenth century, when the Turks had conquered the greater part of Hungary, Eger became the protecting bulkwark of the northern regions. After Buda, the capital, had fallen to the Turks, they tried to extend their dominion northwards to the Carpathians in order to carry through outflanking movements towards Vienna in the west and the southern territories of Poland in the east. Eger already had a fortress, built by Italian experts in fortification, to guard the valley which was the natural line of advance to the north. It was on these walls that the memorable battle for the defense of Eger was fought. A garrison of not more than two thousand, under István Dobó, resisted the challenge of a Turkish force said to be a hundred and fifty thousand strong. The citizens of Eger fought with dauntless courage, and when the fort seemed to be in danger of capitulation, the women joined the battle, gurling down cauldrons of boiling water and tar against the onrushing enemy. The struggle was finally crowned with victory, and the Turks turned back. This great feat has passed into literature. Not only dies every schoolchild in Hungary learn of it, but works of fiction have been written round it, among them the popular ’Stars of Eger’ by Géza Gárdonyi, a lasting work of Hungarian youth literature…. The fortress consists of a hill enclosed by massive walls, and honeycombed with underground passages at three different levels. It was this complicated system of underground defenses which enabled the defenders to face an enemy of vastly superior strength….Here and there are recesses in the walls of the corridors. During the siege sentinels sat here watching peas placed on a drum. The trembling of the peas showed where the Turks were beginning to undermine the walls, and by this simple device the defenders could know when to take measures to avert the danger by drilling counter-mines.“

🍂Tag Game Wednesday! 🍂
Thank you for the tag Kaka @stocious 💙 and Nosho @creepkinginc! 💙🥰
--------------
which character from any media would you like to have as a father? I have no idea 🤔 I'd accept some of the cool dads.
if money, laws, time, and effort were no object, what animal would you want to have? A dragon. Or a horse.
what is your Chinese takeout order? There's almost exclusively only one Chinese dish I can eat and that is the... fragrant tender chicken breast? I think that's what it's called (with noodles)
what's your favourite emoji? 🫂
would you rather have a library, greenhouse, or home theater in your house? In this order all three? Is that an option? It is now 😌
what childhood tv show do you think of the most fondly? I loved Teen Titans and Scooby Doo as a kid. But I was also more of an Animal Planet and National Geographic kid, so...
what was your tumblr like when you first joined? Pretty much the same as now.
what clothing style do you love but don't feel compelled to replicate yourself? I don't think I can think of one.
if you were plopped into a fictional world, which one would you know the layout of the best? Berk or Alagaësia. I think. I'm sure I could think of more...
what is your favourite piece of art? Hmm. I have a lot... I love Anguish by August Friedrich Schenk and Egri nők by Bertalan Székely
do you have a water bottle? what does it look like? I have a bunch. Some are plain, some have all kinds of patterns or decorations.
what fanfic trope is a quiet fave? Angst. Hurt/comfort.
do you carry a daily bag? what does it look like? what's the weirdest thing in it? I do. It's a relatively large camouflage bag. The weirdest thing in it... I usually have salt and sweeteners with me, maybe that counts as weird?
if you had to ship Mickey with another Gallagher, who would it be? Ouch. I've stumbled upon some Lip/Mickey fics and while they didn't make me gag, I'd still pass. So... no.
what is a fanfic trope you didn't expect to like and then very much did? ABO. When I first read an ABO fic, I really didn't like it and left pretty fast. Then one day, it grew on me 😆
Do you think s11 Mickey can still carry s11 Ian? I think so? Small, but mighty. He's short, but definitely strong. Plus, it really depends on the lifting technique. I think he would need a proper carrying technique, so definitely no "bridal style", but yes.
who got custody of the killing bat when they sold the house? Carl. -----------
I'm not late today, so I'm tagging some cool people to participate, if you want. If not, here, you can have a mushroom 🍄 @deathclassic @ian-galagher @bawlbrayker @transmickey @meagaboooo @dynamic-power @deedala @crossmydna @juliakayyy @heymrspatel @palepinkgoat @sweetperversiongirl @spacerockwriting @jrooc @francesrose3 @krystallouwho @steorie @depressedstressedlemonzest @gardenerian @suzy-queued @lupeloto @metalheadmickey @look-i-love-u @darlingian @scurvgirl and anyone else who wants to 😌

do you have any fav pictures/portraits of empress sissy^^?
Hi! I already mentioned my favorite photographs on this ask. But I've never talked about my favorite portraits, so let's do that! To not be too obvious I'm going to omit Winterhalter's portraits, but I still love them (even if I'm a bit bored of them always being used as covers for Elisabeth's biographies).
Tumblr media
Duchess Elisabeth and Duke Karl Theodor in Bavaria, by Carl Haag, 1849. Little Elise! I just find this portrait of Elisabeth and her brother really cute, and there's even a good boy in it! What's not to love?
Tumblr media
Empress Elisabeth of Austria, by Franz Schrotzberg, 1860. One of her best portraits as a young woman; no accessories, no sumptuous attire, just a simple hairstyle and a very striking profile. I wish it was used more often as a book cover.
Tumblr media
Queen Elisabeth, by Bertalan Székely, 1869. My favorite state portrait of Elisabeth, mainly because this is the one in which you can see her coronation dress in more detail. The face isn't the best but that's the least important thing on a state portrait, I'm here for the symbolism, and Székely delivered.
Tumblr media
Empress Elisabeth, by Georg Raab, 1873. This was Elisabeth's best look, fight me. In general I think the 1870s was the time she served looks the most, but in particular I like this portrait because she's looking right at you. Those eyes aren't empty, they know something that you don't, and I love that (oh and that jewelry? Inherited from a certain Maria Antonia, sometime Queen of France).
Tumblr media
Empress Elisabeth of Austria, by Leopold Horowitz, 1899. Her best posthumous portrait, imo. She looks young like in all her portraits from this time, and yet there's something about her eyes that just tells you this isn't a young woman at all, but someone that has lived a long life. Ughh I love art AI could NEVER capture this feeling.
Tumblr media
Queen Elisabeth and Archduchess Gisela at Gerbeaud, by Márk Lajos, 1900. The quality of the picture sucks but I just love this one because is so odd to see Elisabeth depicted with Gisela, specially as an adult woman. I don't know the context for it but I'd love to, specially since is also a posthumous picture. Did someone commissioned it for Gisela? Did this scene actually took place or is a creation of the artist?
There are more that I like but these are some that come to my mind now!
