NASA's trio of mini rovers will team up to explore the Moon
Working together without direct human input, three rovers each the size of a carry-on bag will map the lunar surface in 3D, using cameras and ground-penetrating radar.
NASA is sending a trio of miniature rovers to the Moon to see how well they can cooperate with one another without direct input from mission controllers back on Earth. A teamwork-minded experiment to demonstrate new technology, the CADRE (Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration) project marks another step the agency is taking toward developing robots that, by operating autonomously, can boost the efficiency of future missions. And, by taking simultaneous measurements from multiple locations, the rovers are meant to show how multirobot missions could potentially enable new science or support astronauts.
Currently slated to arrive aboard a lander in 2024 as part of NASA's CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative, CADRE's three small rovers will be lowered onto the Reiner Gamma region of the Moon via tethers. Each about the size of a carry-on suitcase, the four-wheeled rovers will drive to find a sunbathing spot, where they'll open their solar panels and charge up. Then they'll spend a full lunar day - about 14 Earth days - conducting experiments designed to test their capabilities.
"Our mission is to demonstrate that a network of a mobile robots can cooperate to accomplish a task without human intervention - autonomously," said Subha Comandur, the CADRE project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. "It could change how we do exploration in the future. The question for future missions will become: 'How many rovers do we send, and what will they do together?'"
Mission controllers on Earth will send a broad directive to the rovers' base station aboard the 13-foot-tall (4-meter-tall) lander. Then the team of little robots will elect a "leader," which in turn will distribute work assignments to accomplish the collective goal. Each rover will figure out how best to safely complete its assigned task.
"The only instruction is, for example, 'Go explore this region,' and the rovers figure out everything else: when they'll do the driving, what path they'll take, how they'll maneuver around local hazards," said JPL's Jean-Pierre de la Croix, CADRE's principal investigator. "You only tell them the high-level goal, and they have to determine how to accomplish it."
Experiments in Teamwork
The rovers will face several tests - all within view of a monitoring camera on the base station atop the lander. The first is to drive in formation and stay on course using ultra-wideband radios to maintain their relative positions while relying on sensors to avoid obstacles. In a second experiment, the rovers will each take a path of their own choosing to explore a designated area of about 4,300 square feet (400 square meters), creating a topographic 3D map with stereo cameras. The project will also assess how well the team would adapt if a rover stopped working for some reason. Success will indicate that multirobot missions are a good choice for exploring hazardous but scientifically rewarding terrain.
And while CADRE isn't focused on conducting science, the rovers will be packing multistatic ground-penetrating radars. Driving in formation, each rover will receive the reflection of radio signals sent by the others, creating a 3D image of the structure of the subsurface as much as 33 feet (10 meters) below. Together they can gather more complete data than can current state-of-the-art ground-penetrating radars like the one on NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, RIMFAX (Radar Imager for Mars' Subsurface Experiment).
"We'll see how multiple robots working together - doing multiple measurements in different places at the same time - can record data that would be impossible for a single robot to achieve," Comandur said. "It could be a game-changing way of doing science."
Working Smart
But there's more to CADRE than testing autonomy and teamwork capabilities: The rovers also need to survive the harsh thermal environment near the Moon's equator, which poses a challenge for such small robots. In the searing sunlight, the rovers could face midday temperatures of up to 237 degrees Fahrenheit (114 Celsius). Made with a combination of commercial off-the-shelf parts and custom-built components, the rovers must be robust enough to make it through the daytime heat while being compact and lightweight.
At the same time, they need to have the computing power to run the JPL-developed cooperative autonomy software. It's a difficult balance: The project's rovers and base station get their brain power from a small processing chip (the next generation of the cellphone-class processor inside NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter), but using the processor contributes to the heat.
To prevent the rovers from cooking, the CADRE team came up with a creative solution: 30-minute wake-sleep cycles. Every half-hour, the rovers will shut down, cooling off via radiators and recharging their batteries. When they simultaneously awaken, they'll share their health status with one another via a mesh radio network (much like a home Wi-Fi network) and once again elect a leader based on which is fittest for the task at hand. Then off they'll go for another round of lunar exploration.

Multifuel (hybrid) Generators are capable of running on Gasoline, Kerosene, LPG/CNG/Bio-Gas fuels. Fossil fuel [only] generators will not be practical when fossil fuel resources become scarce. A generator (3000 watts or more) with AC (Inverter) outlets for critical electrical appliances can help during a power outage, especially during the summer to help keep refrigerators and freezers running for extended periods of time. SOLAR GENERATORS: Diversification is a trait of a true prepper who doesn't rely on a single type of resources. That's why even a hybrid [fuel] generator may not be the only power solution for a prepper. That's when a "Solar Generator" can be used to fill the gap. This type of generator runs appliances using only rechargeable [car size] batteries and an inverter to convert DC power to AC power for appliances. An electric source (usually solar panels) recharges the batteries but it can be recharges from an electrical outlet, wind turbine or water turbine. There are many commercial models on the market but can also be DIY with the correct knowledge. Use this link for further research on Solar Generators. It is recommended that the selected Solar Generator be able to daisy-chain to exterior batteries to extend the duration of the power (not, usually, the power output/wattage). In other words, additional connected batteries will increase how long power lasts (1 hour to 2 hours) but will not increase the wattage of the output (1200 (+/-) watts to 1500 (+/-) watts). Additionally, daisy-chaining exterior batteries will be cheaper than daisy-chaining multiple Solar Generators. Calculate the appropriate sized generator, necessary to run critical AC electrical applicances and medical equipment, by adding together your appliance wattage (amps X volts = watts) requirements. SAMPLE: Refrigerator = 800 watts (6.7 amps X 120 volts) Microwave = 700 watts (5.8 amps X 120 volts) ------------------------- TOTAL = 1500 Watts (a 2000 Watts generator) Additionally, understand that some appliances require a surge of power before they reach their continuous power usage. For example; a refrigerator needs to run on a surge of electric for its compressor before it reaches its designated temperature setting. It may require 800 watts of surge power until it reaches its designated temperature setting and then drop down to about 600 watts. So, for this particular appliance, a 1000 watt generator will power the refrigerator. It's alway best to acquire a generator that produces more power than you think you may need. Keep this in mind if using a power inverter as the same rule applies. The more devices plugged in to the generator, the less time it will run. Know its fuel/battery capacity and how long it will run on a full tank/charge. Keep enough fuel on hand to fill it several times (possibly for as long as a week). Keep in mind that a Solar Generator can be recharged by a fuel generator so both types can be used in an emergency to extend your power capability, and save fuel, during an outage. When the Solar Generator dies, start up the Fuel Generator to run appliances and recharge the Solar Generator. Then switch back to the Solar Generator to save your fuel supplies. Test run the generator at least every 6 months with at least one appliance (refrigerator, portable heater, etc.) attached as a power-outage simulation. Refer to our Post on Generators. Ground the Generator: Quick Guide to Grounding Portable Power Generators When the generator has completed its mission and it's unused until the next mission, turn off the generator's fuel switch, and run it until it dies (runs out of fuel in the line) to remove fuel from the fuel line to reduce the chance of generator fuel line clogging, freezing or damage. Then turn off the power switch. Use Fuel Stabilizer (STA-BIL, etc.) in the fuel storage container (gas can), appropriate to the type of fuel being used, to further reduce the chance of generator fuel line clogging or damage. It's best to use pure fuel (no Ethanol). Change generator oil at least once a year; more if used frequently. NASA technology helps guard against lunar dust
Defeating dust may be a small concern for most people on Earth, but for astronauts and spacecraft destined for the moon or Mars, it is a significant hazard that must be mitigated. That's why researchers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida are seeking innovative ways to use Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) technology.
Using transparent electrodes and electric fields, EDS technology can electrically lift and remove dust from a variety of surfaces for space applications ranging from thermal radiators, solar panels, and camera lenses to spacesuits, boots, and helmet visors. Controlling and removing the statically-charged dust will be critical to the success of moon missions under the agency's' CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign.
"For these CLPS and Artemis missions, dust exposure is a concern because the lunar surface is far different than what we're used to here," said Dr. Charles Buhler, lead research scientist at the Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory at Kennedy. "Lunar regolith dust can get into gaskets and seals, into hatches, and even into habitats, which can pose a lot of issues for spacecraft and astronauts."
Unlike dust particles on Earth, dust on the moon's surface is sharp and abrasive—like tiny shards of glass—because it hasn't been exposed to weathering and elements like water and oxygen.
"Simply brushing lunar regolith across surfaces can make the problem worse because it's also very electrostatically charged and highly insulating," Buhler said.
Based on the Electric Curtain concept developed by NASA in 1967, EDS technology has been in development at Kennedy since 2004.
It first made its way to low Earth orbit aboard the NASA Materials International Space Station Experiment 11 mission in 2019. EDS technology was embedded in 12 different panels made of glass, polyimide, and prototype spacesuit fabric and sent to the International Space Station for testing in the vacuum of space.
Before making it to space, EDS had been predominantly tested in vacuum chambers that produced promising results of removing simulants and samples of lunar regolith, collected during NASA's Apollo missions, from surfaces within a second.
Most recently, as part of Intuitive Machines' first lunar lander mission, EDS technology was embedded in two lenses of EagleCam, a CubeSat camera system developed by students at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Following landing, the EagleCam instrument successfully deployed from Intuitive Machines' Odysseus lander. The teams at Embry Riddle were unable to acquire images of the lander as they had hoped, but they were able to collect other data sets, including from the EDS technology.
Later this year, another EDS technology demonstration is slated to land on the moon as part of NASA's CLPS initiative mission with commercial partner Firefly Aerospace.
"The team has put in a tremendous amount of work and dedication. EDS is considered the leading technology and the best we have for the removal of dust for space applications," Buhler said. "To fly as a dedicated payload on a mission to the moon is very exciting."
According to Buhler, EDS technology could be a first line of defense for establishing an extended human presence on the moon with future Artemis missions.
From its applications with protecting tools, machinery, and spacesuits, the technology could potentially even help improve day-to-day tasks by being applied to small components like gaskets, seals, and hatches. This could save astronauts the hassle of traveling to the moon with extra cleaning supplies.
"EDS technology can be used outside of a habitat to help clean surfaces like railings and floors, but it can be used inside as well," Buhler said. "All of those applications are being evaluated and tested."
