look if your reaction to geriatric finale betty is "ugh of course she's the main character the writers are obsessed with her" i do get it but please keep in mind that

- they have kept her trapped in a cycle of emotional abuse with her mother for SEVEN seasons and all indicators are that it will last to the bitter end

- they tore her out of the one relationship in her whole life that made her feel seen and secure and loved for what will likely remain the most blatantly out-of-character plot machination I've ever seen in my life

- the seven years that followed are mainly notable for the fact that she a) was kept in a dirt pit by a serial killer for several weeks and b) became a cop

- they put her in a fuck buddy relationship that she proactively ended only to later accept being his second choice for [reasons not found], relationship then proceeds as a series of red flags clearly suggesting that not only are they fundamentally incompatible (which she already said, out loud, on screen) but that the relationship also consistently makes her feel inadequate and bad for being herself

- they made her the actual biblical whore of babylon (??? still don't understand this one)

- and finally when there's a full-on reboot her sole character traits are "horny for literally anyone at any time" and "constantly angry at mom" who, again, is still abusing her

so like, you're correct, the writers are obsessed with her. they're obsessed with TORTURING HER

I think the reason I hated the Shermy and Beth bit because of how Beth kept treating Simon as a little kid. I understand that she didnt believe Simon was actually Simon and not Shermy messing around at first but then later on she accepts it.

But then we have the book scene where she literally says something like "I dont expect you to understand since youre still a kid" and I get that Simon was acting a bit childish with the book but if I was in his place, desperately trying to find my way back from an alternative reality where I am sharing a body with this seemingly random person, id be really upset to be dismissed like that.

I know Simon needed to understand his choices and his focus were wrong and he needs to think about Betty more and accept the way things are now but it feels so bad with the way they handled it 😭

Like we see Simon being miserable at the start and everyone is making it worse (Literally everyone save for maybe one or two people even if its unintentional) and he has a right to be upset about everything that happened to him tbh. It was all messed up.

And then we have Prismo being annoyed with him not cooperating (which i kind of understand but this is about Simon rn) so he moves him along and then with Shermy calling him a kid it feels insult to injury. It feels so unintentionally Bad i can barely put it into words

You show how negatively Simon was affected and how he struggles to cope with the aftermath and then you have someone call him a child. It was an important realisation to have but it was sooooo badly handled. I dont even care about how spoonfed and told not shown it was atp

WHEN ALL THE BRIDGES HAVE BEEN BURNED:

jennifer pierce expected the best of her children. she gave them the best so of course they had to return the favor. she had inherited her father’s business, and was excelling so much her husband took her last name. it wasn’t a feminist thing, but a money thing you see. alethea grew up without a want, but the truth of the matter is she never knew what she wanted. her mother made those decisions. from what she wore, to how she cut her hair, to who her friends were and what activities did. her entire life was planned to a t, and alethea never questioned a moment of it. how do you question something that you didn’t know was an option?

her brother jacob was doted on, and grew up with a grin and popularity. this was easy to him. this was painful for alethea. she smiled and waved, and the only matters of relief she found were in her ballet classes. going professional hadn’t been her mother’s first plan, but seeing the natural talent her daughter was, and just how feminine she was, allowed this small change in the over all path forward.

jennifer and carl met at ogden, and she knew that was where her children were to go. there was no exception, and jennifer would do whatever needed for her kids to follow her legacy. the major was flexible, but they would go to ogden, they would find suitable spouses, and they would carry on the family legacy. it was picture perfect, and she never heard a single word of complaint from either of her children. 

AND ALL THE TABLES HAVE BEEN TURNED BY ME:

growing up without decisions meant college was terrifying for alethea. she had to pick her classes, find friends that her mother couldn’t approve of, and suddenly had free time that wasn’t planned out for her? it was paralyzing. but during the second week of classes greer spotted alethea across the way and took her under her wing. she showed her what the world could be, and she still fit under that approval from jennifer pierce. greer wasn’t just her best friend, but she was a bit of a savior for her.

this whole time there has been a gnawing in her chest. a desire for freedom, a petition to let the real alethea out and run free. but who was she? alethea couldn’t answer that, not honestly. just who her mother had manufactured her to be. but this confusion, this shyness, this quietness played into a different picture of alethea. it allowed her to be whatever anyone wanted her to be, they could paint their own ideas of her. she could be mysterious, she could be all they ever wanted. and she could be a dream.

and it was through this exploration that alethea slowly stepped out of the pillars her mother had built for her. first came the time greer dared her to kiss another girl during spin the bottle, and alethea realized that she might have enjoyed it more than her mother would have liked. and then came the time greer put her in a suit instead of a dress, and she liked the way it looked on her. and that maybe she wasn’t a girl after all, but something that could be shed. and so they started to pick up new pieces of theirself, putting them together to form a whole new journey. was ballet even the career they wanted? did they even like ogden? who were these people that had been decided as their friends? the questions became overwhelming.

WHO WILL BE LEFT TO LEAVE? JUST ME:  

and now greer is gone. and it’s noticeable the change in alethea. it began before her disappearance of course, but could it somehow be correlated? alethea willingly goes out, sometimes alone, now. they are keeping greers friends, they are speaking up and out, they have a bite to them that hadn’t existed once upon a time. what does the future hold of alethea? are they becoming who they really are, or are they once again pretending, shedding the quiet role they had lived into for all their life for one that looks a little more like their now missing friend…

GREER:

during freshman year at ogden, alethea was absolutely lost and in-over her head. she had never been the rebellious type, her parents had been too strict to allow non-sense in their house, and so alethea was overwhelmed with the freedom college could allow, and she had no idea how to deal with it. her mother had always taught her to seek out the ‘right’ people to befriend, and it was just her luck that greer extended her own friendship to alethea. she brought them to the parties, encouraged her to flirt with whomever was necessary in order to go after who she wanted, and overall guided alethea through college. they doesn’t know if she would have been able to survive any of it without greer. there was little jealousy on alethea’s side at the beginning - she was just grateful for what greer could offer her through her friendship. and alethea was not a threat to greer. but as they’ve grown older there has been a tension living in the friendship, the reliance upon each other that might not be as necessary anymore. alethea was not anymore outgoing or less shy, but now her shyness was being interpreted as mystery, making them a bit more intriguing to others and perhaps sparking some jealousy on greer’s side.

THE DRAG-ALONG:  

you know that girl that was always a few steps behind greer and the fallen princess? the one with wide eyes and a quiet demeanor? they never seemed to talk much, but even in their silence never seemed to be entirely so observant that you had to watch what you were saying. really, she just seemed like a little pet to the best friends, a third they allowed to follow them around. 

and that person? that was alethea, taken under greer’s wing during the first weeks of school freshman year but never brought too close. it was the kind of relationship where alethea was sure to call greer one of her best friends, and greer might hesitate, only referring to them as a simple friend. but wherever the fallen princess and greer were, alethea was there. fingers picking at each other, posture both immaculate and slouched. each semester they seemed to get a bit bolder, inching their way up next to the other two, but still never find herself as an equal.

I can understand that they wanted to "explore" ba this season, and I can even understand that they wrote themselves into a corner and went "fuck it, 50s high school reset it is." (It's inexcusable for a bunch of people who are doing this professionally, but it's not like this hasn't happened before.)

What I CANNOT for the life of me comprehend is why they wrote ba as a series of red flags? Like, the most consistent thread in that relationship all season was them repeatedly bumping up against the fact that they explicitly didn't want the same things in life, and then ignoring those signs that the relationship isn't going to work, instead of making any attempt to resolve the differences. Then Archie proposes after the anvil that is his mother saying "yeah we got divorced bc we didn't want the same things"? And Betty (rightly) tells him he's not in the right head space, and then turns around and changes her mind 5 minutes later because...she didn't want a promotion?

WHAT?

Like they could have easily just written a ba relationship that...worked. instead they chose to lobotomize Betty and repeatedly emphasize the fact that they're incompatible. To what fucking end!?

ETA: i just want to clarify a little bit that i’m not questioning why they flattened out Betty’s character to make the ship happen. i’m questioning why they made explicit - as in, made the characters themselves state out loud! - the very fundamental cracks in the relationship only to continue forcing it to progress without ever addressing how the two of them might bridge those gaps.

               this   house,   this   family?      polly   can’t   take   it   anymore.      sure,   maybe   her   parents   are   trying   but   it   isn’t   enough   after   what   they   had   done   to   her.      at   a   time   when   she   needed   them   the   most,   when   she   was   vulnerable,   they   cast   her   away   to   that   horrible   place.      the   sisters   of   quiet   mercy   was   no   sanctuary,   but   more   like   a   prison.      a   prison   where   they   drugged   you   and   kept   you   quiet.      the   thing   is   polly   doesn’t   know   what’s   worse,   the   sisters   or   her   own   parents.      she   can’t   forget   how   her   father   tried   to   force   what   he   considered   a   solution   onto   her,   and   she   certainly   doesn’t   forget   all   the   things   her   mother   has   done   and   continues   to   do.      she’ll   apologize,   but   at   this   point   polly   is   convinced   that   alice   never   means   the   words.      like   they   say,   actions   speak   louder   than   words   and   the   cooper   matriarch?      her   actions   spoke   poison.

               judgmental   gaze,   hushed   voices,   it’s   nothing   toni   hasn’t   experience   before.      being   from   the   southside   of   riverdale   usually   elicited   that   reaction,   and   it   was   only   made   worse   being   involved   with   the   serpents.      the   thing   is?      she   didn’t   give   a   shit.      she   was   proud   of   where   she   came   from,   proud   of   who   she   was   and   no   amount   of   northside   prejudice   would   change   that   fact.      she   loved   being   a   part   of   the   southside   serpents,   it   was   a   family.      to   toni,   that   family   was   everything.      she   could   turn   to   them   when   she   needed   supported,   and   in   turn   she   would   support   them   any   way   she   could.

               so   head   is   held   high   as   she   walks   through   the   hallways   of   riverdale   highschool.      she   even   goes   as   far   as   to   wink   at   a   couple   who   stared   her   down.      they   may   think   they   can   bring   down   the   spirits   of   the   newly   transferred   southsiders,   but   they   couldn’t   be   more   wrong.      in   fact,   going   to   school   here   gave   them   so   many   opportunities   to   better   their   education.      it   gave   them   access   to   learning   tools   they   just   didn’t   have   in   southside.      the   ability   to   learn   far   outweighed   any   negativity   given   by   the   northside   students.      so   as   far   as   toni   was   concerned,   they   could   give   it   all   they   have   to   try   and   deter   the   serpents,   but   they   were   here   to   stay.

BACKGROUND

Meera was adopted when she was four years old by her fathers, Everett Madison and Samar Bhatt. Samar and Everett work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Samar works in human trafficking department, while Everett teaches classes, and does some work with cyber crime division. Samar had a bust with his division, saving dozens of people, but the little girl who clung to him and refused to let go was a victim he couldn’t send away. 

At the time, Mimi was their third child. Her two, older adoptive siblings, Rohan and Laura started there. Both of them started off as foster care children, whom the Madison-Bhatt’s adopted. Charles was adopted two years after Meera. Sutton was last, adopted when she turned seven.

Her grandparents played a heavy role in her upbringing. Both her fathers’ jobs have them working long hours, but did not want to rely on a nanny to raise the children. The Madison side of the family is old money. They spoiled the children, but taught them the power of wealth and how to navigate the world. The Bhatt provided Mimi a chance to know her culture. Her parents took Rohan and Mimi on a yearly trips to India for them to learn more about their heritage.

Mimi was enrolled in dance lessons at the age of eight after she told her dad she wanted to look like the pretty ballerinas in the Barbie movies she watched. She started off doing ballet, but found herself loving every style. Mimi trained in multiple types. Her favorite styles are ballet, jazz, and Latin. She is considered classically trained and has won every competition she competes in.

Tragedy befell the family when Sutton died at the age of nineteen. It hit Mimi especially hard, due to their closeness. Their family rallied together, going to therapy and supporting each other through it all. They healed, but not without effects.

She dreams of being just like her parents and getting involved in the FBI. Her goal is to work internationally, which encouraged her love of languages. Ogden boasted providing the best program for her career path so it seemed like a perfect fit. 

Initially, everything was going super well. Mimi got involved and met plenty of potential friends. Then she met Greer Morrison. She tormented her, making every second she spent on campus hell on earth, and forced many people on campus to join in as well. Mimi thought about transferring multiple times, but she refused to let Greer think she beat her. Coming into this year and seeing that Greer isn’t around, things have begun to look up. The investigation wasn’t a shock to her, but it does have her guard up.

THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH GREER - Greer’s Victim

When Mimi first arrived at Ogden, she didn’t expect to become enemies with the Queen Bee. It started off as rude remarks and glares from across the room. It would escalate into being excluded from events and cruel comments on her social media. It was her mission to make Mimi miserable at Ogden, and she almost succeeded. She never had any proof it was Greer behind it, but she knew. Greer going missing, while peaceful, has Mimi scared that she will be the next suspect. However, a big part of her wonders why Greer hated her in the first place.

HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR TROPE - The Amateur Sleuth

As a child, Mimi adored the mystery stories her father would read with her. There was something about gathering clues and information to reach a final conclusion that intrigued her. She found her nose constantly in a book, trying to solve the case. It wasn’t until middle school that Mimi realized she could do it in real life! It started off simple: the case of who stole the fruit roll ups, missing homework, the little things. She enjoyed the thrill of finding the culprit. She eventually turned it into a business. Is my partner cheating on me? Yes, and she’s got the evidence to back it up. Which faculty is on the committee for homecoming court? She’s got their names and addresses. At Ogden, she’s managed to keep this little business running well without any of the faculty finding out. One of the perks of being an outsider. Greer’s missing person case is the perfect time to show that she can handle something more intense.

Mimi has her pilot’s license, and a Cessna 172 Skyhawk she shares with her family.

Her grandmother, on the Madison side, and older sister were in Kappa Kappa Gamma. 

She prefers the Hardy boys over Nancy Drew. 

Mimi loves botany, and is obsessed with the language of flowers. Her dorm is filled with plants. 

She speaks four languages: English, Hindi, French, and Spanish. She is currently studying Latin. 

Tea is her caffeinate drink of choice.
