A bit of a locked room mystery episode. CID raid a burglar’s home and find him unconscious in his bed, despite the fact that the house was locked and bolted from the inside. A (very loud) guest appearance from Melanie Kilburn (later Laura Bryant).

I just can’t get over how everybody was actin like Carolyn Bryant Donham (the woman who lied and got Emmett Till killed)was too old and weak to go to jail and we just needed to leave her alone but they surely snatched up Bill Cosby for what he was doin back in the day. they were like 3 years apart.

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 402
Smithy returns to work after a few days off after his imprisonment.
He creeps up behind Gina to find her doodling over a 'Welcome Back' poster, clearing his throat. "What part of 'I don't want any fuss' don't people understand?" he asks, pulling down all the posters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gina laughs and tells him that there's lots of Sgt's who wouldn't even be missed and he sighs and says he's going to make himself busy "before anyone else gets mushy on me!" Gina smirks and places him with relative new boy, Lewis, who had only arrived a couple of episodes before Louise's death. Gina tells him to go and help Lewis with his paperwork skills (Lewis recently admitted to being mildly dyslexic) and Smithy sighs. "This isn't your way of making me take it easy is it?" he asks, only for Gina to feign innocence. As he follows Lewis, he pulls down another poster - and doesn't even have to turn back to know that Gina will be putting the poster back up - and drawing more on it. "Don't even think about it!" he says - making Gina laugh.

Dan and Laura are called to a warehouse where a laptop has been stolen. The manager is admamant from the off he knows exactly who it was who stole it. Laura asks who and how he can be so sure and the man explains it's because he's an "ex-con" who he should never have employed. It's only our mate, Morris, Smithy's former cellmate. Morris works in the post room which is next door to the office where it was stolen from - and he hasn't turned up for work that morning. The boss entered the dispatch time into the laptop as the last lorry left and the shutters were pulled down and locked. Morris is the last person who is known to have been in the building because part of his job is sweeping up and turning things off. Dan points out that it's not very smart as obviously he'd be the first suspected. "Who said an ex-con has to be smart?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the station, Dan and Laura enter the writing room where Smithy is helping Lewis. He heads across to listen to what they're saying and thinks it's a wind up first when Morris is mentioned. He asks them to hang on before they enter it into the system, wanting to check up on Morris first.
Lewis is unsure about approaching Morris as he was flagged for officer safety warnings - but Smithy explains he's an OAP who is no danger to anyone and although he did murder someone, it was self defence. Morris is absolutely made up to see Smithy, laughing at the uniform and inviting him in. He's not at work because he's moving in to his own flat today!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smithy has to gently tell him that an accusation has been made. Morris deflates as he'd been hoping Smithy was calling in to say hello. He asks if it was one of the other ex prisoners from the bail hostel he was moving from. Smithy assures him he doesn't believe it - Morris wouldn't even know how to plug it in, never mind what to do with it - but Morris is understandably upset and defensive. "Search the place and get out." "Morris...." "You heard me. Search the place and clear off."
Smithy and Lewis return to the warehouse and update the boss that nothing was found and that Morris is only off because he's moving and that he had been given permission by both the boss and the probation service to be off because of it. The boss just scoffs and says it's handy for him and enables him to have a chance to fence it on. Smithy tells him that he doesn't believe Morris took it and the heavily pregnant admin worker, Mary, in the background quickly jumps in and says that she saw him with a brown paper package under his arm when he left the night before.
She was in the office earlier... how interesting and totally not at all suspicious that she didn't mention that to Dan or Laura - or the boss. Smithy asks Laura to take her statement and the woman talks her ears off about how tight the boss is, how she's worried about her maternity pay and how he docks her pay at the slightest whim - including for her to go to the station to give the statement about the laptop! Surprisingly this doesn't ring any jingle bells about who could behind the theft for Laura (!) who is mindful that she has to duck out part way through her shift to take her son to the dentist.
Morris returns to his flat to find Smithy and Lewis waiting for him. He lies that it was him who stole the laptop and that he'd sold it for £50. A disbelieving Smithy asks what he spent it on and Morris can't answer quick enough. "Why are you telling me a pack of lies?" "Why not?" Morris sighs, feeling he's too institutionalised to be out in 'the real world'. He's also confused when Smithy tells him that it was Mary who says she saw him - at 5.30pm - carrying something. Morris tells Smithy he bunked off earlier than half 5 to go to the bookies around the corner from his flat. The bookies has CCTV which happily backs up Morris' story that he was there at 20 past 5 and he wasn't carrying anything.
Laura is caught on the hop by Smithy after dropping her son at the dentist and she lies to him that she has entered the report into the computer.
Smithy does a little bit of naughty story telling by contacting Mary and saying that there is a tracker on the laptop that will pick it up as soon as it's turned on. Reg and June are outside Mary's home and are watching just incase...and it's a matter of minutes until Mary is leaving the house with the laptop under her arm! Reg and June pull her car over before she can even leave the road and check the package during a 'routine traffic stop'.
Unfortunately due to Laura not doing as she said she had with the report, when the serial number of the laptop is called in by Reg, nothing comes up... June has to press the issue and asks Mary who gave her it and then asks her to turn it on. She says a friend but refuses to be drawn further and won't switch it on so she doesn't activate the tracker Smithy embellished about in the telephone call so June arrests her for 'potentially' handling stolen goods.
Laura rushes back to the station and starts to enter the report onto the computer... only for Smithy to appear behind her. "Come back to finish your CRIS report have you?" he asks, catching her out. Laura freezes, gutted when Smithy tells her what could have happened because the details weren't in and she not only bunked off but she also lied to him. He orders her to report to his office at the end of the shift.

Smithy goes to update Morris and lets him know he's completely in the clear. He also explains that he knows some of what he feels as admittedly he wasn't in as long, nor was he put through a trial or found guilty, but he knows people are going to want to know what happened to him and will gossip. He offers to speak to an acquaintance who is an ex prisoner himself that owns a kebab shop with regards to getting a job to escape from all the suspicion nonsense that happened to him today. Morris agrees and Smithy smiles, telling him he's not on his own.
Laura reports to Smithy and he explains that, despite her cock up with the computers, she had done the statement well enough to be able to charge the real thief of the laptop. He tells her that it's unlike her to skip out to run domestic errands and Laura has to confess that the new 12 hour shift patterns are causing havoc with her family life. Smithy sympathises but there's little he can do about the shift patterns and he dismisses her with a warning not to do it again.

In 1999 Michael Bryant had a brief cameo in the second episode of the BBC's adaption of 'Wives and Daughters' by Elizabeth Gaskell. In his two later scenes we only hear him as he is deep in discussion behind closed doors, but here Dr Nicholls is terrifying Mrs Gibson, played by Francesca Annis, with a piece of brawn!

Under Wraps Turns 25
People Magazine got three members of the cast (Bill Fagerbakke, Adam Wylie, and Clara Bryant) together with director Gregory Beeman to chat about Under Wraps.
youtube
Released in 1997 just before the Zoog Disney era began, Under Wraps was the first official Disney Channel Original Movie.
An edited video portion of their time together is above. The full-length article with details about chemistry reads, making the mummy suit, their own stunts, and more can be read here.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Under Wraps is not available on Disney Plus. (Which makes zero sense since it’s the DCOM that started all DCOMs.) However, it did appear on YouTube in its entirety last month.
