Under Wraps Turns 25
People Magazine got three members of the cast (Bill Fagerbakke, Adam Wylie, and Clara Bryant) together with director Gregory Beeman to chat about Under Wraps.
youtube
Released in 1997 just before the Zoog Disney era began, Under Wraps was the first official Disney Channel Original Movie.
An edited video portion of their time together is above. The full-length article with details about chemistry reads, making the mummy suit, their own stunts, and more can be read here.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Under Wraps is not available on Disney Plus. (Which makes zero sense since it’s the DCOM that started all DCOMs.) However, it did appear on YouTube in its entirety last month.

I saw you put him in the new Under Wraps (a movie I didn't know existed? lol), so can we get him in the old one? Bonus points if you can put him in the occult shop they go to for advice!
Thank you 🖤

Can’t believe I was bamboozled into watching Under Wraps 2 thinking Disney made a sequel to Under Wraps (1997), a 25 year old movie no one cares about, only to find out five minutes in that Disney remade Under Wraps (1997) and Under Wraps 2 is in fact a sequel to Under Wraps (2021)

"just hold me" (jay x reader)
Tumblr media
genre: fluff word count: 0.6k requested by nonnie ♡
a/n: hello, it's your very much sleep deprived crazy writer again :)) i planned on posting a shorter drabble tonight but i think i'm literally just unable to write anything under 0.5k... i'll try the next time tho!! hope you guys like this one, i kinda love but hate it at the same time <33

"Jay," you whine, trying to wiggle out of his grip weakly. "Get off. It's too hot."
"I don't care, I'm cold," he scoffs as he pulls you closer, arms tightly wrapped around your waist.
As much as you love cuddling your boyfriend and it's a rare occasion that he actually wants it more than you do, the stuffiness in your bedroom is already enough to prevent you from laying comfortably. And with Jay's body heat added to that? Au revoir good night's sleep.
"Then put your goddamn shirt on," you grumble, finally succeeding at prying his hand away from you.
Jay huffs, pressing his lips to the back of your ear. "I would but you're the one wearing it now."
A smile creeps upon your lips and you press them together to contain your laughter somehow. The black fabric of his favorite t-shirt is indeed snugly wrapped around your body. You're glad your back is turned to your boyfriend's face as you know that the second he would've noticed your smile, you wouldn't be standing a chance against him anymore and you'd have to surrender yourself to a whole night of the sweet suffocation.
When you feel his hand sneaking around your waist again, you're quick to slap it away, covering up your laugh with a loud cough.
"You're mean," he pouts which is so out of character for him and only makes the urge to laugh and give in harder for you.
So instead you wave your hand at him dismissively. "Go to sleep, you big baby."
You listen to his steady breathing for long enough to determine that he's most likely already asleep, slowly, you wiggle yourself backwards until your back meets his toned chest.
And you can hear his incoherent mumbling of fine's and whatever's underneath his nose before the blissful silence comes upon you two at last. You sigh from tiredness, feeling the burden of entire day weighting down on your eyelids with each minute.
There's one thing missing though – one significant detail that fends off your very needed sleep no matter how hard you try to put this feeling to an end. And then after two more minutes of trying, you give up with a sigh, well aware that there are no real chances of you actually falling asleep tonight without feeling Jay's arms around your body.
"Well, would you look at that? Knew you'd come crawling back," he teases only one second later and you close your eyes, realizing you've just been caught acting up against your own pride. "Just can't get enough of me, can you?"
"Shut up," you mumble, pushing your body even more into his chest, ignoring his snickering. "Just hold me, please?"
Jay huffs out a laughter and you can just hear the teasing smile that spreads on his pretty lips. "You're always so cute when you're sleepy. As you wish, my baby."
Without needing to prompt him any further, his arms wrap around you in an instant, his body heat engulfing you pleasantly. You're too tired to pay any mind to being too hot, and you just sigh out of content, snuggling even closer to him. His fingers slip underneath the hem of his your t-shirt and he caresses your skin with his calloused thumbs soothingly. Now, with your boyfriend's lips on your neck and his slow breathing matching its pace with yours, you allow the tiredness to take over and you finally fall asleep, tightly tucked in Jay's arms.

Steph makes a few aborted sounds in her throat before slapping her hand against her mouth while Eddie pounds into her. Her muffled sounds make him look up and notice that she's silencing herself and his hips still.
She blinks up at him, confused at his sudden stillness.
"Does it not feel good?" he asks with a slight pout to his lips.
She shakes her head immediately.
"It does," she croaks out before slapping the hand back over her mouth. Eddie frowns.
"Then I want to hear it. Please."
She shakes her head again, but it's small and hesitant this time. She spreads her fingers, not ready to take the hand away, but wanting to be heard.
"I can't control my voice, you know..." She makes a vague gesture to her mouth, her neck, and the vocal cords beneath. "Like this. There's only so much estrogen can do."
Eddie's heart breaks for her. He sits back, most of him slipping out, and caresses her thigh.
"What do you mean?"
She sighs, but the soft touch on her skin helps her calm down and gather her thoughts.
"Hormones don't just... change my voice. They kind of help expand my vocal range so that I can hit the higher notes, and sound the way I do every day. But I can still use the lower notes, and sometimes they just... slip out." She winces.
"Stevie." She looks up at him. "Stephanie, Steph." Eddie leans forward again, and she presses her lips together when his dick moves inside her too. "You're a woman, and your voice won't change that, not to me. I want to know I make you feel good. I want to hear it's so good you can forget yourself, and let loose. I want you to trust me that it won't change how I see you."
Despite his words and the blush on her cheeks, she doesn't seem convinced. So he adds, mercilessly:
"Please."
Stephanie nods and lets him take her hand away from her face. He presses his lips to her palm, watching her cheeks redden further.
"Thank you."
Wayne has taught him to be polite and respectful to women but he never knew such simple words would make someone squirm under him like that. It makes him want to bring her flowers and kiss her goodnight, knowing she'll eat it up and turn these beautiful shades of pink and crimson just for him.
He presses her hand to the mattress and resumes his movements. Slow at first, because his dick lost the plot for a second, but as soon as he felt himself get into full hardness again, he braced himself with the intent to bruise.
"Let me hear you," he said, slamming into the woman beneath him.
She whimpered, at first, and Eddie let her ease into it, observing her slowly part her lips and let the music flow. The breathy little ohs and ahs, the whines that follow, and finally, when he hit the right spot, a choked-off moan.
"Like that," he praised immediately. "Shit, you sound so hot."
And when she looked into his eyes, moaning and whining unashamedly, her self-consciousness gone, Eddie lost it.
He dove down to bite into her mouth and she accepted it happily, sharing her moans, the high ones, and the low ones, directly into him. With her free arm, she grasped his shoulder, trying to pull him even closer, and he let go of her other hand so they could wrap around each other, pressing tight until their bones crushed, only their mouths and hips allowed to move freely.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god," Eddie chanted into the corner of her mouth. "Steph."
"Eddie. I'm gonna—"
It's all the warning he gets before her heels dig into his back to pull him impossibly deeper and she comes. Her blunt nails digging into his skin are the last straw for him.
"Fuck!" he grits out, spilling into the condom, and his thrusts finally weaken, turning into a shallow sway until he stills, breathing heavily against her neck, where he presses his mouth because not touching her wherever he can right now would be torture. Slowly, as he regains control over his muscles, he starts pressing light kisses there.
"You were perfect. So beautiful. So hot. And you sound divine."
Despite his body's protests, he pushes himself up, because he needs to look her in the eyes.
"So good I could record you and take you with me to Indy, for the lonely nights."
"Oh my god, stop." She turns her head away, face twisting with embarrassment. But Eddie presses on.
"Those little moans you make, the ohs," he tries to imitate the breathy sounds she made and watches her cheeks bloom. "The ahs. Perfect. Thank you for letting me hear them."
"Uh, sure," she offers.
Eddie raises an eyebrow.
"You sound like you don't believe me."
All she can give him to that is a shrug. So he moves his hips, making her hiss from how sensitive she is, and pulls out from her. He can feel her eyes following as he gets up to dispose of the condom and goes for the door, closed against the four-legged intruders.
"Towel? Shower?" he asks, but she shakes her head, lifting herself on her hands to point towards the window.
"Just throw me this one. It's going into the laundry anyway."
Eddie grabs the towel, smelling faintly of hair conditioner, off the radiator. Instead of handing it over though, he sits on top of Stephanie's thighs to wipe the cum off her belly himself.
"Such a gentleman," she comments, with amusement in her tone.
"Well, I try to treat a lady how she deserves to be treated." He gives her his winning smile, the one he uses to charm his way out of trouble and get an extra cookie at the cafeteria. It must be working, because she finally softens, the lines on her forehead smoothing out as her expression opens up like she's starting to believe his words.
"You saw my... you know."
"Sure did." Eddie nods with a cheeky grin. "And she's pretty like the rest of you." He grabs her dick to clean thoroughly around it and wipes gently at the tip to make his point. Steph's breath hitches at the way he addresses her genitals.
"And you heard my voice."
"I hear It all the time," he points out, nudging her knees up to gently wipe the lube from around her rim.
"Yeah, but not like this," she says, lowering her voice on purpose. Her eyes are piercing and testing, and Eddie looks up to meet them.
"I'm a musician, I love a woman with a wide vocal range." He sits up though, his smile wilting. "Do you want to scare me off? Because it's not working, but if you want me to leave, just tell me," he says with a frown. He's been doing his best to be gentle and accommodating. True, he's not dealt with trans people before, but he thought he was doing well. "If I crossed a line somewhere, or did something wrong—"
"No, no, you're good," she cuts him off with a furious shake of her head. "I think I just need a moment."
Eddie gives her a puzzled look. He folds the towel in his hands nervously.
"Okay. Do you want me to leave, or..."
"No, just come here."
Instead of being shunned out of her flat, he's being pulled down, chest against chest. He quickly gets the memo and straightens his legs until he's laying like a blanket on top of her, arms bent awkwardly to cradle her shoulders, head in the crook of her neck.
Stephanie tries to be quiet, but eventually, she can't hold back the wet sniffle that alarms Eddie.
"Shit, are you crying?" He tries to look up, but she presses his head back into her neck so he can't move.
"Shut up," she says, but doesn't sound angry. So he settles back down, tries to wrap his arms around her to provide the comfort she clearly needs, and lets her feel whatever she's feeling, fingers gently tracing her skin.
When he can feel her breath and heartbeat settle down, he asks without looking up:
"Were these good tears?"
She snorts.
"Of course they were, idiot."
He huffs out an amused breath against her neck, making her shoulder jump against the ticklish feeling.
"I haven't been treated this nice in a long while. It's a lot."
Eddie hums against her skin. He doesn't have the words to help, but he understands the feeling so he hugs her tighter against him.
"I get it," is all he can offer. It's like the first time Wayne had praised him after years of living with his parents. He bawled his eyes out back then, not understanding why. "I'll treat you nice every time, I can't imagine doing it any other way."
Her breath quickens again.
"See?" she asks wetly, almost accusingly. "And now you're promising me more. You can't do that."
"Why not?" Eddie frowns. But he's still not allowed to look up.
"You go to college. You don't even live here."
"I live here sometimes," he corrects. "And I have a feeling I'll be visiting more often now."
She huffs but doesn't say anything.
"What? Long distance doesn't work for you?" he half-jokes.
"You make it sound like it's a relationship," she says and Eddie cannot decipher her tone. She sounds accusatory, hurt, and annoyed all at once.
He finally breaks from her grasp but gives her the comfort of no eye contact. Just settles more comfortably against her collarbone, not crushing her to the bed anymore. He throws his leg and arm over her, wrapping Steph in a comforting touch she so clearly lacks.
"It could be," he says.
She doesn't say anything at first, but he senses another scoff on the tip of her tongue.
"Could it?" she counters eventually. Eddie hums.
"Yeah. Why wouldn't it?"
"I'm older than you."
This time it's Eddie who scoffs.
"You're beautiful and funny and have only one too many cats. I think you're fine. And if you have like, a deadly old-lady disease you haven't told me about, that's all the more reason to spend the time you have left being properly fucked and wooed and courted."
"I like how you set the priorities there."
He slaps her hip gently.
"Like you didn't like it."
"I did, I did." She reaches into his hair to gently scratch his scalp. "Can we come back to this?" she asks, but there's an almost pleading tone in her voice. "Next time you visit, we can talk about it."
He doesn't like the idea of waiting until his next break, but if she needs that space, he'll give it to her.
"Of course."
The signals he's getting are confusing, but he hasn't been told a straightforward 'no' yet, and the hand in his hair is nice and gentle, so he thinks his odds are quite good. He understands the need to think things through even if he's a man of impulsive decisions himself.
"When do you have to leave?"
Eddie turns to look at the Garfield clock on Steph's bedside table. If he doesn't leave right now, he'll run into traffic outside of the city later. But if he waits a few hours, he'll catch a nice view of the sunset and will be back in his flat shortly after sundown. He doesn't have classes until noon tomorrow anyway.
"I have enough time for a nap and round two," he decides, looking back at her.
"Perfect." She smiles sweetly, craning her neck down to kiss him. Then she flips them until she's the one cuddling into him, and he positively shudders when he wraps his arms around the soft body pressed against him, cradling her to his chest.
"Yeah, perfect," he agrees, closing his eyes.

Okay one of the few times that whole "PhD student in history" thing is going to be relevant to anything I post here but last night's C3 episode has me feeling some sort of wayyyyy.
Specifically the part where they found those incredibly ancient elven ruins within the cave they were exploring. After barely escaping near-death, and Laudna fresh from deliberately channeling the darkness within her, they stumble across these ruins. Deep within a dark cave where they sought refuge from the harsh storms that plague the unforgiving Ruidian surface. Geodes full of sharp and jagged crystal jut out from the walls of cold, ancient rock. A river coming from some unknown source pouring into a rushing waterfall, leading away further into the depths. Matt did a phenomenal job painting the scene.
There, in those ruins - in that tomb, that crypt - they run across a hauntingly serene sight. Bones from the presumable inhabitants are crushed into the walls, unmoving. Frozen. Sharing the same space in a wonderful, striking, tragic, serendipitous juxtaposition is an enchanted garden. There, in the derelict remains of this once-vibrant space, the vestiges of that past life hold strong. A small bastion of life and healing amidst the monument of death and destruction.
It's within this space of dizzying contrast - air thick with the practically tangible weight of past tragedies - that Laudna finds a doll. A simple doll, devoid of features beyond the bare minimum that helps identify it. A toy, a companion? A relic of some child from so long ago. Laudna likes dolls. She decides - after asking permission - to keep it.
Now within her possession is a ghost. Not a literal ghost, mind you, considering those are in fact a very literal thing in the world Laudna lives in, but a ghost all the same. Through that doll, a child from untold centuries before is reaching, grasping at Laudna. This child, whose entire life, history, and experienced are lost to time - trapped in the past - has managed to pierce that temporal barrier and make themselves known to her.
In addition to this framing of a ghost, the doll can represent another type of haunting. That of a reencounter. Through this doll, this mundane object that often is filed away under the folder of insignificance, Laudna is confronted with the complicated web of violence, trauma, and grief that wraps around both her and the space around her. Laudna loves children. She has a childlike innocence that constantly bubbles at the surface. Yet beneath that is 30 years of unfathomable pain and loneliness.
Laudna, much like the ruins, is at times also frozen. Both physically in her unaging visage and mentally in the way she seems to revert in response to intense trauma.
So, within the confines of this long-forgotten space, the woman who just hours before channelled 30 years of darkness, anger, and hurt into a spell that served to strengthen her tormentor, picked up a doll. A doll that in so many ways symbolizes the innocence and joy that Laudna embodies, surrounded by tragedy.
It was such a beautifully haunting scene.
**If folks are interested, I am referencing the wonderful works of Avery Gordon in her book Ghostly Matters (1997) and Crystal Baik in her book Reencounters: On the Korean War and Diasporic Memory Critique (2019)**

ROUND 1D, MATCH 2 OUT OF 16!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Linh Cinder:
Her glass slipper is her prosthetic foot. She's a cool badass mechanic queen. She's named Cinder because her aunt set her on fire as a toddler but she survived. She's a a cool cyborg with psychic powers, and she's also a really good mechanic.
She's a cyborg and she's from the Moon
She is a badass mechanic who is also a cyborg and did not intend to get dragged into this mess. She becomes a fugitive of the law, running from the prince who is also her romantic interest and is just objectively the best.
I love a sarcastic character and I love a good confrontation scene and she's great with both
she's a cyborg she's a mechanic she's a princess she's a fugitive she's the best.
She's a mechanic she's the lunar princess she has two prosthetic limbs she's supposed to be dead. Her best friend is an android who's a fangirl of her boyfriend (Kai, the emperor). Her ball was actually her showing up to keep Kai from getting seduced by her aunt (who's queen of the moon) and then killed. Instead of losing her slipper she just lost her entire foot. (That's all just in the first book.)
look man, if you've read tlc you know why but if not: cinder here goes through a lot, from living in a shitty household to leading a rebellion and witnessing what's practically a massacre (TWICE), getting stabbed in the mc'freaking heart and surviving, being a wanted fugitive, Oh, and also, she loses her goddamn FOOT instead of a glass slipper lol (albeit the foot is a prosthetic, which i might've forgotten to add, her left arm and (i think) leg are metal due to getting BURNED as a toddler by her somewhat power hungry aunt)
She's SO cool she's a mechanic and really clever and also an amputee and her prosthetics are very cool and she has fun space adventures with her little gang of found family and is also the heir to the crown on the moon and is trying to get control of it from her aunt (who's a dictator) so she can help the moon people be less oppressed! tl;dr she's a girlboss
She literally got set on fire. Shes a cyborg. Shes such a girl boss that her love interest kept her severed prosthetic foot as a memento. She is a revolutionary [against her will] and a politician [also against her will]. Shes a skilled mechanic, and called the queen of a super-powerful alien race with the ability to manipulate people’s perceptions of reality ugly TO HER FACE. Queen does not give a shit and just wants to hang out with her robot bestie and her dork ass boyfriend who is also the leader of an entire country. Shes iconic, she is the moment.
she's a teenage cyborg who works as a mechanic and is secretly royalty - a badass and i love her!!
Kickbutt cyborg Cinderella princess
Cyborg and mechanic is a fun new twist on classic Cinderella! (At least when I read it and it was new). Plus she’s got her Prince/Emperor all wrapped around her fingers before the ball!
she's cool as fuck that's why!! cyborg cinderella in a cool-ass future sci-fi world, she doesn't have glass slippers so she loses her ill-fitted cybernetic foot, she has a gun in her cyborg hand (mostly uses nonlethal projectiles), she has cool sci-fi magic mind powers, she's from the moon, she's a mechanic & she's smart as hell, she literally forms a ragtag team of other fairytale inspired characters & dethrones the evil queen of the lunar monarchy. also her prince charming is cool & funny & they're so sickeningly in love their feelings could power the sun. anyway vote Cinder ✨️
cinder is a mixed cyborg mechanic who has acquired beef with both her stepmother (adopted) and her bio aunt (tyrant queen levanna) and manages to escape their attempts to keep her down (including arson when she was like. 3 years old) and ultimately overthrows her aunt in a revolution lead by her and the other fairytale retellings (red riding hood and wolf, rapunzel and her ‘prince’, and her cousin snow white and her prince) and establishes a democracy! i enjoyed the series growing up and i personally think that cinder is very cool :]
The first book in The Lunar Chronicles is a retelling of cinderella, and my gosh it’s amazing. Cinder is a cyborg and faces a lot of prejudice, and it’s interesting to see that even in the future, where the book is set, there’s still so much discrimination, and Cinder faces it so well. She’s smart and snarky, and has such character growth and cares so much and akhjfqwthbj
shes cinderella if cinderella was a cyborg and also secretly an alien moon princess. fucking amazing series everyone should read it. It's very common for Cinderella retelling that "girlboss" her end up sending the weird message that victims of abuse should simply stand up for themselves <3 I really like Cinder because she's spunky and snaps at her stepmother, but it doesn't. do her any good? It just makes her stepmother worse. Also one of her stepsisters is nice, I love Peony.
Cyborg Cinderella, long-lost princess of the moon, revolutionary against the evil queen.
she’s a cyborg! instead of losing her shoe on the steps of the palace her entire foot comes off 👍 thats hard as fuck she’s so cool
Cinderella:
Because she is so cute in this, I love her outfits before and after the transformation, and this movie is just such a good adaptation of Cinderella
the 1997 cinderella movie is the best one ever to me like. you have whitney houston as the fairy godmother and brandy is so so so pretty and she's such an amazing cinderella. 10 minutes ago the best cinderella song of all time ever she sounded so good<3
does this movie even NEED propaganda?
Brandy Cinderella with Whitney Houston! Need I say more?
Brandy plays one of the best iterations of Cinderella actually
I just think she's neat. Also she looked the best in the ball gown
One of the most iconic Cinderellas of all time, Brandy brought tenderness, earnestness, and heartfelt poignancy that transformed the story and emphasized its humanity and themes of dreaming for the future. Her voice is celestial! The power of her performance is undeniable! As a lifelong Cinderella fan she was always one of my favorites.
A lot of children grew up watching this movie around the holidays.
This is my favorite version of Cinderella and Brandy absolutely KILLS IT as Cinderella!! Her voice is so sweet and beautiful. And her dress!! I love her peplum. ALSO HER BRAIDS MAKE A BUN AND ITS SO ADORABLE. just look up the soundtrack for this movie PLEASE

There is a Vine
Rating: General CW: None Tags: Post-Canon, Future Fic, Comfort No Hurt, Fluff, Married Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson, Dad Steve Harrington, Dad Eddie Munson, Original Child Character, Fic Inspired by a Song, Steve Harrington is a Sweetheart, Eddie Munson is a Sweetheart, Boys in Love, Steve Harrington Sings (But He's Very Shy About It) Inspired by the song "There is a Vine" by Connie Converse. Lyrics in the fic, and the title belong to that song <3
🎵——————🎵
Steve doesn't usually sing around or to other people. He's really private about it. Not because his voice is bad or anything, but it's the one thing he does get embarrassed about. Just the nature of doing it in front of other people makes his palms sweat. So he very rarely does it.
He does it a lot around Robin, but that took quite some time. It took Robin openly singing The Cars so poorly, that Steve had to chime in and sing over her in the car. He'll only sing around Robin in the car.
He's not one to do it around any of the Party members. Not even Dustin. Doesn't do it a lot in front of Nancy—that one Bob Seger joke plays back in his mind a lot, and he cringes at it before he goes to sleep.
It's not until way later in his life that he begins to do it a lot.
In 2010, he gets married to Eddie in Boston, Massachusetts. Their relationship was slow to blossom. One that didn't begin until 1997, when they could finally let go of the past and be comforted by one another's presence near constantly. It was a tepid, tentative, hesitant beginning. But then they're married and it's the most wonderful thing in the world.
Sometimes, Eddie catches Steve singing in the shower. But that's been happening since they've been roomies—1992 and onwards. He'll hear Steve mumble lyrics while making dinner. Maybe hum along to a song in the car. He never says anything about it, doesn't join in unless prompted to. And that's okay, Eddie knows. Because he relishes in Steve's soft, sort of raspy voice. It reaches beyond his ribcage and coats his lungs, his heart, his everything in a sticky layer of security he's never felt with anybody else.
And then, only a year and a half into their relationship, they're approved to adopt a newborn girl named Olivia. She's cute and small, has big blue eyes and wispy brown hair. She'll smile at anything. Her giggles are high pitched and squealing. They're wrapped around her finger, just as tightly as her whole hand swamps Steve's indexes.
But the most noticeable thing is that she cries quite a bit. And she's never quiet about it. They've tried everything. Making sure her crib bedding is debris free, even warmed by the dryer. They've swaddled her tightly. Played white noise in her nursery—when she was allowed space away from their bedroom. Read her bedtime stories. Gave her a short, warm bath before bed. Everything. They've tried everything.
Then, Eddie comes home early in the evening one day. He can smell pot roast from the kitchen, cooking low since this morning in their crockpot. The living room is lit by a few ambient lights—one candle, that he'll have to tell Steve to not leave unattended. Otherwise, though, there's nobody greeting him at the door; which isn't completely unusual, but he expects it to happen most of the time, as it does.
What catches him, though, is the low rasp of Steve singing. A small and gentle coo following a few lyrics.
"There is a gate halfway down my garden wall, And in the night I lock it, bolts and all, And in the day it's open wide to all who would come through, But, day or night, it is never locked for you."
He carefully, mindful of the creaks in the floor, comes down their apartment's hallway. And on his left, only a couple feet in, is the nursery. Where, when he peeks through the cracked door, he spots Steve in their rocking chair, gently cradling their little Olivia in his lap. One hand on her head and neck, the other tucked under her bottom. Steve's slowly making the chair rock—back and forth and back and—with the heels of his bare feet. He's dressed down, having stayed home with the kiddo, in his pajamas—the same white t-shirt and green tartan fleece bottoms he's worn since 1989, still fitting him somehow, even with the weight that comes with age. He's got his glasses slipping low to the tip of his nose, as if he just got done reading one of the bedtime storybooks. Eddie looks over to the side table next to the chair—lo and behold, Corduroy is sitting closed.
Steve begins singing again:
"There is a tree growing by my garden gate And year by year it seems to stand and wait, And here am I beneath the tree, for I am waiting too, And, oh, my love, I will always wait for you."
His voice goes to a low whisper at the last word. Gone with the song as Olivia coos and gently snores in Steve's lap. Eddie watches him stand slowly from the chair, carefully carry her to the crib, and lay her down all swaddled up in a pink blanket. And before he can scramble away from the door, Steve is opening it. Coming face to face with Eddie.
They walk out back to the hallway so the door can be closed. And Steve begins to go out to the kitchen. "Hey, baby," Steve greets softly, "I didn't hear you come home."
"I was trying to keep quiet," Eddie says, voice just as low. "So...did you and Liv have a good day?"
Steve bustles around the kitchen. Takes the lid off of the crockpot, shreds the contents inside with a few forks. He washes his hands in the sink. Pulls a few plates from the cupboards. Pushes his glasses up his nose again.
"Hm, yeah, just spent a lot of time in her nursery today," Steve answers, "she was kind of fussy. Think it was the last day of that cold she picked up from Robin when she visited. I might've picked it up from her, so be wary of that." He doesn't even look up from his plates to glance at Eddie in the doorway, just dishes up dinner as if nothing happened. And nothing really did, Eddie knows that realistically. But he's never heard Steve sing that much in one sitting—in front of another person, at least.
He busies himself with pulling utensils from the drawer while Steve is still dishing up dinner. Fusses with trying to find the smaller of the big forks they have, just so he can make sure Steve gets his favorite one. "That song," he tentatively points out, "I've never heard that one before."
Instead of making a big deal out of being caught, Steve flushes pink and shrugs. "Heard it off of an album," he murmurs, "the one my mom sent out of the blue last week."
"That one she said had a song that reminded her of you?"
"Mhm," Steve hums. He puts the lid back on the crockpot, so nonchalant. Carries the plates to the table, and Eddie trails after. "It was that song, in fact."
Eddie makes a sound of understanding. "'T's a pretty song," he idly comments, "seems like Olivia enjoyed it."
"Think it might be the new lullaby for a little while," Steve says, sitting down with his food. "But you don't have to worry about learning it."
That takes Eddie by surprise. He sits, too, but hardly makes a noise. "Yeah?" he says, "you sure?"
Steve just nods. Cuts a piece of his roast with his fork, scoops it up, but doesn't bring it to his mouth quite yet. "I like singing to her," he states, a soft smile joining those words. "She looks at me like I'm...like I'm her whole world. I want her to know she's mine, too."
Eddie smiles back, soft, no teeth. Begins to tear apart his food, too. "It's because she's right," he says, "you're hers—our whole world."
Steve doesn't say anything to that. Sheepish and oddly shy. Eddie knows that Steve would say it back, he takes no offense to the silence. Adoring instead how Steve seems...quietly happy and completely in peace.
"I love you, baby," Eddie speaks softly, "you did a great job today."
"I love you, too."

Dad Eddie where daughter starts giving people at school the finger because she’s seen her dad do it
anon, so I totally went all out on this one. bringing an unexpected cameo haha than you for this request! I hope this is what you wanted! xx
pairing: dad!Eddie Munson x wife!reader tags: part of my dad!Eddie series, this takes place 1997, Arwen Munson getting in trouble at school, no mention of baby brother but he's alive and probably at daycare (Steve), we're in the principals office oh no, Eddie standing up for his daughter, not so nice teachers, typical Eddie and Arwen behavior, we are fully supportive. word count: 1.7k oops a/n: I have more requests incoming :)
Tumblr media
When you swung open the school’s front door, the smells of childhood filled your senses. Did every elementary school smell the same way? Was that a good thing? Whatever the case, the smells of crayons, cleaning supplies and germs was not how you envisioned your morning.
Your boss was annoyed at your sudden need to leave work at the demand of Arwen’s principal. His tone only meant she had done bad and a parent conference was due. Eddie was on his way from work to meet you as well and together you would both tackle your first (and hopefully last) time sitting in an office due to your daughter's behavior.
“Hi,” You attempted a smile at the receptionist. “I am here for a meeting with the Principal? I’m Arwen Munson’s mom.”
“Ah yes, wait right here.” The woman led you to a row of chairs and you waited patiently.
Arwen was a good kid. She would never do anything maliciously. It was inconvenient that they didn’t explain the reason over the phone, making the dramatics of having you come in. Arwen was in 3rd grade, she was raised to use her words and to be respectful. There was no way she got into a fight or bullied someone. There was no way she’d find herself in those situations. And if she did… You prayed it didn’t come to that.
You couldn’t help but feel that you were in trouble. In middle school, you only had to come to the principal’s office once because of a miscommunication.  Eddie always teases you for your good record and how you’d never do anything bad. In high school, he’d call you adorable for it.
The other side of you were nervous for how this would look as Arwen is the daughter of Eddie Munson. What if she really didn’t do anything wrong but because of her dad, the veteran teachers who once taught her dad are now treating her like they wish they did him. That was unfair. Especially since Eddie was a kid who acted out as a mask. A defense for how he really viewed himself. If only these schools recognized that earlier instead of showing him he wasn’t worth two cents.
The front doors barged open and you heard “I’m here! I’m here! Sorry I’m late. Was stuck under a car for 3 hours.”
“And you are?” The secretary asked nonchalantly. Close to the way the secretary at Hawkins High would sound when she heard a younger Munson run in tardy.
“Oh-” You could hear the surprise in your husband’s voice. “Right, Eddie Munson. Father of Arwen Munson.”
“Your wife is around the corner, you can wait for Arwen and Principal Jenkins there.”
Your husband wrapped around the corner and gave you a smirk when he saw you. He threw a red and black flannel over his work shirt and jeans. A few rings helped make him look more put together and not as if he just came from the repair shop.
“Well well well, I’m getting flashbacks.” He said as he slumped down into the chair next to you. “How are you?” He asked, leaning over to give you a quick kiss as a greeting.
“I was doing good until I got this call.”
“It’s probably nothing.” Eddie reassured.
“If it was nothing, we wouldn’t get called up here. I’m just scared how this will affect her school life from now on.”
“I highly doubt it will, sweetheart. Besides, we don’t know what she did. Maybe this is a good thing! Maybe she got an award!” As he gave your lap a quick pat, you sighed.
“Maybe. Just the tone they gave makes me scared she's in trouble.”
“Mom?” You heard your daughter ask across the office. She stood there with her lunch bag which showed she was pulled from the cafeteria. Her hair was fashioned into a high ponytail after seeing DJ from Full House wear it that way. Her overalls unclasped from one side revealing an old faded band t-shirt that has shrunken from Eddie’s collection. When you locked eyes, she immediately looked away embarrassed of whatever she did.
“Hey, sweet girl.” You smiled.
“Mr. and Mrs. Munson?” You heard someone call from behind you. Principal Jenkins was standing outside her door with a slight smile.
“That’s us.” Eddie responded.
“Come on in.” She walked into her room, inviting you to come inside. Arwen ran over and gave you and Eddie a quick hug before going inside with you. “Please sit.”
The three of you sat in the chairs lined up on the other side of her desk. Arwen sitting between you and Eddie. You rubbed Arwen's back consolingly before facing the principal.
“Thank you for coming on such short notice.” She started. Another set of smiles were sent her way despite you both being annoyed you had to leave work. “I wanted to start off by saying I am very proud of Arwen’s academics. She has complete excellence in all her studies and her special area classes. I wanted to ask if she would be considered for our gifted program.”
Relief ran over you as the good news was delivered. You looked over at Eddie who showed nothing but a proud face. He gently shook your daughter’s shoulders.
“That’s my girl! Yes, that would be amazing.” You noticed Arwen’s lack of enthusiasm and patted her leg.
“Is that something you’d want to do?” You asked.
“There is one thing though.” The principal started.
Oh no.
“It seems this morning Arwen decided to effect that perfect citizenship grade by an act of throwing a middle finger at her substitute teacher as well as some of her students.”
“What?” you asked, baffled.
“I bring this up as a concern because that would affect the final process of the gifted program application. Her homeroom teacher must approve that she is capable of maintaining good citizenship when brought into the gifted classes.” The principal didn’t seem too happy.
“Arwen, baby, why did you do that?” Disappointment settled in as your daughter sat quietly, kicking her feet slightly under her chair.
“Sweetheart, you know that’s not appropriate to do.” Eddie added, yet his face seemed more worried.
“I didn’t mean to. I just got really mad.” She admitted.
“What happened?” You asked.
“Mrs. O’Donnell saw my last name and asked if you were my dad.” She looked toward Eddie. The name rang the bell as your old English teacher from Hawkins High. Guess her retirement meant coming to torment 8 year olds. “I said yes and she said she hopes I don’t turn out like you. That she didn’t like the Munson kids. So I just did it.” Eddie sighed, knowing she didn’t know of the things he went through in school. Including the time he gave Hawkins high Principal and Mrs. O'Donnell the bird as he got his diploma...
Sure she knew he was a bit of a troublemaker but you didn’t tell her specifics. That was unfair of O’Donnell to say that to her but not okay to respond that way, especially with her presumption of Eddie’s children.
“Yes, we are taking care of Mrs. O’Donnell’s behavior but it was not okay to do that on Arwen’s part especially toward her fellow students.”
“They were laughing at me instead of standing up for me!” She exclaimed.
“I can’t take away the mark on her citizenship for that as it is still behavior we do not allow.” The principal added.
“How does that affect her ability to do the gifted program?” You asked.
“Her homeroom teacher has to approve that she is able to show good conduct in difficult situations.”
“I promise, this was a one time thing.” Eddie reassured.
“I do hope so, Mr. Munson. I’m only concerned about how she has learned that behavior.” Her tone showed a hint of judgment.
Your eyes widened, knowing this was a trigger for Eddie.
“My daughter is nothing like me. She is more than I could ever be. I will not tolerate teachers having assumptions of her due to the mistakes I made when I was in school. This gifted program is an amazing opportunity for her and I don’t want that to be affected by anything other than her own accomplishments. We will make sure she does nothing like that again. But she deserves this.”
You’ve never heard Eddie like that before. Prompted by his own past and his defense for your daughter, he truly has shown his growth. You didn’t think you could love him anymore but here you were, smiling wide at him as he stood up for your daughter.
“Thanks, dad.” Arwen smiled.
“We will put it into consideration, thank you for coming in.” Principal Jenkins was lost for words. The three of you stood up and left the office.
“How do you feel about getting checked out and getting some dessert?” Eddie asked Arwen, giving her shoulders a tight squeeze as he led her to the front of the school.
“Eddie…” You whispered.
“It’s okay I need to talk to her about a few things.” You simply nodded, trusting his judgment. “Go grab you stuff from your class, I’ll be checking you out.”
“Okay!” Arwen smiled and ventured toward her class.
You and Eddie walked back toward the front where the secretary you greeted earlier sat.
“Hi, we’re going to check out Arwen Munson for the day.”
“Alright, her class is at a special area class so she will be brought up with her teacher. Wait right here.”
Eddie put his arm around you and you wrapped yours around his waist in response.
“Are you okay?” You asked.
“I’m doing great.” He responded.
“Mr. Munson.” You heard. Turning around, you saw Arwen being brought to the front by Mrs. O’Donnell. This is why he checked her out…
“Ah Mrs. O’Donnell. Missed me so much you came out of retirement to see my daughter.”
“Eddie!” You lightly smacked his back.
“Yes, she is wonderful.” Mrs. O’Donnell deadpanned.
“Oh and thank you for those kind words you said today about me. Always a pleasure knowing you think so highly of me. Have a good one.” He said as Arwen walked toward the two of you. He wrapped her around and led the both of you out of the school.
“But she didn’t, dad.” She looked up at your husband.
“I know,” he said as he shut the door. “and so does she.” He said before quickly flipping off the school and running to his car laughing with Arwen.
So that’s where she learned it from…
Looks like you had to be the one to get onto the both of them but you couldn’t help but be proud of the way they defended each other.

Robert Vance Dingman, New Hampshire inmate 70966, born 1979, incarceration intake in May 1997 at age 18, sentenced to life with possibility of parole, parole eligible June 2034
Murder
In May 2018, a Superior Court judge ruled that the state’s new recommended sentence for convicted teen murderer Robert Dingman doesn’t constitute a de facto life sentence.
Dingman was serving life without the possibility of parole for shooting his parents, Vance and Eve, to death in their Rochester home in 1996.
Dingman, who was 17 at the time of the crimes, was seeking a new sentence following a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled it unconstitutional for juvenile offenders to be given such sentences.
The state was requesting of the Court that Dingman be resentenced to two consecutive, 25-year sentences — one each for the murders of his parents. The defense has argued such a sentence would constitute a de facto life sentence due to Dingman’s age.
In a ruling, the state's Chief Justice determined the state’s recommendation isn’t the equivalent of a life sentence.
An aggregate 50-year sentence would give Dingman the possibility of release at age 67, which is less than a Centers for Disease Control analysis that found the average inmate’s life expectancy to be 76.
Robert and younger brother Jeffrey Dingman shot their parents as they arrived home from work in February 1996. The brothers wrapped the bodies in garbage bags and hid them in the attic and basement. They then played and partied over the weekend, returned to school Monday and were arrested after their parents’ coworkers called police.
Testifying at his brother’s trial, Jeffrey said he shot his parents first but said Robert instigated the killings and taunted each before firing the fatal shots. Prosecutors said Robert chafed under his parents’ rules and curfews, and in the months leading up to the killings the boys considered several outlandish plots, including poisoning their parents or pushing them onto thin ice.
Jeffrey, who was 14 at the time of the murders, received 30 years to life in a plea deal in exchange for confessing to police and testifying against Robert. Jeffrey was paroled in March 2014.

Director Greg Beeman, cinematographer Mark W. Gray, and composer David Michael Frank sat down with Past Foot Forward to talk about developing Under Wraps.
The piece is lengthy, so settle in when you read it, but it’s full of so much detail about filming in Chico, California, getting the song rights to “All By Myself”, working with young actors, and not having many restrictions by Disney.
If you love the piece, Allison Merrill’s has other DCOM coverage.

EVEN MORE Things about Cinderella's Castle I'm excited about already as a big Cinderella fan
Tumblr media
Part One, Part Two (This), Part Three
I did this once, guess I'm excited enough to do it again!
The songs sound wonderful! Can't wait to hear what they sound like with the cast and I can't wait to see what Lauren does with the choreo! NPMD blew me away and I can't wait to see how this show will kill me. "Cursed Crazy", "Step On Your Grave", "Ash To Ash", and "Ever After" are my favorite demos so far.
I think it's so cool that "Step On Your Grave" is such an angry song. I know it takes place while Ella's cooking her step-family dinner, but it would be really interesting if a reprise took place after Ella learns she can't go to the ball (that is if the story works the same way as usual). Normally, if Cinderella gets a song during this moment, it's very mournful, like say "In My Own Little Corner (Reprise)" from 1997 Cinderella. And that's great! But giving Ella a song like that, but with a "No Good Deed" from Wicked vibe would be so original and new as far as I'm aware! Cinderella has every right to be sad at her abusive situation, but also every right to be angry! Imagine she wants to follow them to the ball not to have a good night like usual but to kill her step-family on the way or at the ball somehow. Whether a rendition of "Step On Your Grave" is at a moment like this in the show or not, Ella deserves a song like that I think and I'm glad she's got one.
"Step On Your Grave" has a lot of allusions to Ella once being a princess in the making before the step-family or something came along, and Ella mentions her father having a sword, so I wonder if the Ashmores are fallen royalty or had royal tie-ins of some kind. Like maybe Ella was arranged to wed a prince or something.
"Ever After" has some elements of grief and that's so special I think. Cinderella often loses someone or something under her step-family, like her family or her former life, but the grief aspect isn't brought up too much very often in adaptations, the most significant time I can think of it being brought up is in 1997 Cinderella. It'd be nice to include that element in this show. I can't help but wonder if Ella's father's death was accidental in this show. "Ever After" kind of reminds me a bit of "Cool As I Think I Am" from NPMD sound-wise; some smart musical person should mash them up once "Ever After" is released. Ella also might be kinda regicidal in this song too, so... POOR GIRL'S JUST SO CONTEMPLATIVE!
I genuinely doubt "Trappings of Starlight" has much to do with the Starlight Theather from Hatchetfield, but to add to that craziness, the "Uh-oh-oh-oh," reminds me of the vocalizing from "Axe Man" from NT2. And "Should we shun her?" in "Castle On A Hill" reminds me of "Should we kill him?" in "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals". I don't think it means anything though. It seems pretty clear that The Lands That Are and Hatchetfield aren't going to have much overlap.
"Ash To Ash" seemingly referencing Ella's mom! I get this feeling that Ella's mom was a witch or enchantress of some kind and that's why she was burned. And it sounds like the Fairy Queen and Ella are maybe plotting revenge on someone or a system, maybe? And I wonder what QF means by saying Ella is "Terrible as I". Maybe she means terrible as in great or fearsome, like, say, "Oz the great and terrible" or something. And the lyric, "I shall wrap thee in these cinders, Ell" makes me wonder if her dress will be made with starlight + the cinders on her body—what a wicked idea! I love how far the Langs took the whole cinders and ash thing. With Ella's surname being Ashmore and this being a duet with the Fairy Queen, I'm very curious about the title and if there's a double meaning; are Ella and the Fairy Queen related in some way? This retelling will be so good!
In the subtitles for "Ash To Ash" in the 4/13 livestream, I assumed "Q+C" was supposed to be "Queen (Fairy) + Cinderella", but listening to the song a second time, it sounds like C's lines overlap Ella's very slightly, which would make it hard for one person (Bryce) to sing alone. So C is likely not Ella in that song. Maybe it's Crumb? Some in the chat said it probably just meant chorus, so we'll see eventually.
All the little motifs that exist already! Like "Will it Ever After Happily?" in "Castle On A Hill" and "Ever After". Or the talk of Ella painting in both "Ever After" and "Last For Ever". "Ever After" has so many! AAAHHH!
The Lyrics in "Castle On A Hill" being "A queen and her vanity, a beast and his agony" have me Thinking™. Are the prince's parents Beauty and the Beast? Is the prince a beast? And there's also the Excalibur callback??? Since Nick said there would be no other fairytales involved in this story, it might just be more of a reference than literal, but it's still cool.
The lyrics to "Cursed Crazy" make me wonder if the citizens blame Ella for the Ashmore family's demise for some reason. The idea of Cinderella not even being able to find potential solace in the townsfolk is so sad! There's so much to think about!
Dying to know what "'Cause my love will be fierce, and your love will be missed," in "Trappings Of Starlight" will mean. It's such an intriguing line. As well as who is the character singing the song. We seemingly don't know who they are yet.
Seraphim Fairy Queen is such a cool idea, especially with all the talk of God(s) or a god in "Ash To Ash"! No pressure on the Langs, but it'd be so cool for them to be able to go through with that design concept, even if it's through minimal tactics. I can't wait to see who this Fairy Queen is. Is she the prince's mom??? A Sleeping Beauty-type character we could follow in a future show??? Ella's mom??? Ella's girlfriend??? This will be so cool!
There are more characters that we haven't been introduced to yet! We can still get Ella a girlfriend guys! Genuinely excited to see who they are!
The fact that the trolls eat rodents and other smaller creatures has me a bit worried about Sir Hop and Crumb. Maybe Ella was going to cook them for her step-family, but became friends with them instead, protecting them from getting eaten.
Not to get too Crazy, but what if the characters singing with Ella in "Last For Ever" are her parents, resurrected, or never actually dead or something. Probably not, but what if???
I have a feeling I'll be making more lists as we learn more about the show, so if I have any more thoughts I'll try.

Marie Presley, interview for Rolling Stone Magazine, 1997, introducing her film TLC: The Presley Way
A Sarge & lil Mama blurb, 2nd generation: Marie. word count 2k, PG rating, mentions of divorce
Tumblr media
Marie: “You know, I’m used to being asked how it impacted me being the child with the least ‘parental involvement.’ But I really don’t get it, not even when my siblings joke that Elvis was more like Santa to me than dad, a merry-making stranger who showed up once in a blue moon to spread love and cheer before rushing back to the workshop to make more goodies the rest of the year.
“Maybe there’s some truth in that but how was I to know? I didn’t know anything differently than what I had, just like lots of kids you don’t know what else you could’ve had, just like I didn’t know anything different from being very privileged, um, just as my dad didn’t know any different from being very poor.
“But what I do know is that I was very loved, I have been my whole life, and what I have are a treasure trove of memories, extensive amounts of time spent with him at all ages. I look at it this way, we wouldn’t say someone is fatherless just because their dad is gone every day of their life from seven in the morning to six in the evening, that’s a whole lotta time to be gone.
“Whereas I had months on end where I saw Dad from sunup to sundown, slept in my parents bed, ate and played and read with them. Spent time on homework and perhaps most personally impactful, I had my own interests nurtured by them. Dad spoiled me, there’s no question about it, but it wasn’t in the way of rich men giving their kids toys and telling them to then run along, leave them alone.
“Dad engaged with me on everything and anything interesting to me, anything that interested my siblings he would spend hours on it, not even the fun part of say -photography. But the boring details, too. If there was a new camera he would get it for me and together we could figure out how to make it work, how to develop the film, how to get the perfect exposure.
“We’d pour over artists' work and do our best to mimic them. It was play but it was always constructive, and when I think back on those late Vegas afternoons that were his mornings, that he would spend tirelessly engaged with me and my siblings, only to then have to go out and perform multiple times into the night, the adult in me is exhausted and grateful that he took the time. That he did it all so cheerfully that I had no idea how worn out he was.
“The divorce years were hard, I was an eight year old and definitely attuned to the different dynamics in my family. I was very close with my sister Ella who was extremely unhappy at the time, maybe more so than most of my siblings. So her discontent rubbed off on me a little, confused me. But for the most part I didn’t notice a big change, mom and daddy really tried to keep it under wraps, multiple times they insisted there wasn’t a team to pick, and maybe that was too nuanced for the older kids but I got it, I chose not to pick teams.
And before it had lasted very long, we were all back together again.
“Daddy didn’t have a tour, what with Colonel Parker being under investigation, and he stayed home because of Danny, and Daisy and then they got remarried. It was a blip for me really. I got to live with Ella, I got to travel around with Jesse and dad, I got to visit Rosalee out at college. It seemed more like a vacation bouncing than banishment. I was really fine with it, maybe I’m just built that way, it wasn’t as devastating as it might’ve been for another child.
“I do remember my ninth birthday being the single bummer of it all. Or at least, the day started off going decidedly down hill.
“I was the baby who made it after the tragedy of them losing Jo, and you beat believe dad always made a huge deal of my birthday. He’d always tickle the Angel kisses on the back of my neck and remind everyone how Jo and Gladys sent me, mama would recount the story of my birth and my siblings would recall how they laid hands on mama’s belly and prayed I’d come out safe every day for eight months before I was born.
So after nine years of this, when I came downstairs in ‘77 to find that the earth and divorce proceedings hadn’t screeched to a stop just to celebrate me, I was pretty miffed.
I remember just feeling like the vibes were really off at the house, even though dad had come back to celebrate, it was obvious he was very upset with mom. I remember Jesse took me riding on his bike that day, we got out of the house and had fun and I remember when he put me on it, mom and dad were in a deep discussion on the porch, apparently about the fact that I was having a meltdown over not being treated special enough. I've already admitted I was very spoiled, OK folks?
“But the real big thing for me was that by the time I came back from that ride and opened my presents and we ate dinner, things seemed perfectly fine, normal and natural. That night we went through our usual routine and I climbed in the bed with mom and dad like old times. Now that I think about it, that was probably the first time in months that they slept together, and they did that for me. And they did it so naturally and it was really a happy evening, even for them, I think.
“It’s funny how professional you can get at getting along when you’ve had to endure so much like they had, one night of harmony in the middle of a divorce wasn’t a big hurdle for them. There was so much love still there and so much practice, just a lotta confusion. You can see why I wasn’t very surprised when Mama showed up with a baby and a wedding band back on her finger. It might sound bizarre to outsiders, and it’s certainly been portrayed like that by some of our closest friends, but in this film I’d like to set the record straight. It’s what I saw lived out.
Love can be very chaotic sometimes, complex and bizarre but it tries its best. It seeks the good of others. It’s the catalyst for great things and produces generous hearts. And my family certainly did just that.”
Thanks for letting me bug ya with a blurb, and slowly but surely I’m putting faces to the kids, and their stories too. So much thanks goes to my girlies who hash this out with my for hours on end in the chats. The chats are the new trenches, ok? It’s where ya make your Bestest buddies.

Why you should care about the TV Critics Association Press Tours, even if you are not a TV critic
Back in the day, years ago, it happened with regularity: A snarky story in one of the entertainment industry trade magazines taking a shot at the Television Critics Association’s twice-annual press tours.
Before we go on, a bit of inside baseball for context: the TCA is a group of critics and journalists who cover the TV industry, and two times a year we hold a conference of sorts in Los Angeles. Loads of major TV outlets participate, rolling out press conferences, receptions, set visits and interview opportunities to promote series and projects rolling out over the next six months or so.
The most recent TCA press tour, which I attended in Pasadena, Calif. (the picture above shows me giving the group's Heritage Award to Twin Peaks during the TCA Awards July 12), concluded in the middle of last week. And, predictable as an afternoon rain shower in Florida, The Hollywood Reporter rolled out a tough piece describing “The Incredible Shrinking Press Tour.”
“Frustrations with a staid press conference format, accelerated by Hollywood belt-tightening and the COVID-era shift away from in-person gatherings, to say nothing of severe budget cuts across the media landscape, have taken a visible toll on the press tour,” read the story, which quoted unnamed publicists of TV programmers sniping about having to participate. “An event that once stretched more than two packed weeks wrapped its latest cycle on July 17 after a thin eight days. Powerhouse streamers such as Netflix, Apple and Amazon were absent, and not a single programming executive took the stage to face down the press.”
Tumblr media
(cast of Brooklyn Nine Nine at a TCA set visit)
True enough, this year’s press tour was smaller than previous outings; the event has struggled to return after COVID sidelined much of the TV industry. But Hollywood has also been buffeted by the impact of two strikes last year and concern – so far averted – that there might be a third this year.
A surplus of TV programming, increased production costs and caution about this year’s climate has led some big projects to be delayed until next year – more than one person in the industry joked to me about the phrase many are repeating in Hollywood, hoping to “survive until 2025.” Downsizing in media has also made it tougher for journalists to find the time and financial resources to attend press conferences at a swanky hotel which stretch out over more than a week.
Turns out, there’s lots of reasons why the tour has slimmed down this year, as the industry itself recalibrates and refocuses amid lots of institutional change.
But, as someone who has attended TCA tours since 1997 – yes, I’m THAT old -- I’m here to say that the tour remains a relevant and useful part of covering the industry, despite the anonymous sniping of assorted industry types.
Tumblr media
(Yours truly visiting The Price is Right set during a TCA tour.)
When I first began attending tour, as the TV critic for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, the event was filled with critics like me from regional papers from across the country. We were trying to give our local readers insight into an industry which came into their living rooms nightly for hours at time. And for me, the TCA tour was an invaluable crash course in modern television.
Over the years, I got to know publicists who arranged exclusive visits to the sets of ER, Six Feet Under, Sex and The City and Law & Order. I quizzed industry leaders at on the record receptions, including former CBS head Les Moonves, Fox News founder Roger Ailes, Survivor and The Apprentice executive producer Mark Burnett, FX head John Landgraf and Scandal/Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.
When the late, lamented UPN network created a sitcom that felt a bit too close to being a veiled comedy about slavery – the show was called The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer, look it up – I was there to challenge the network’s executives and its producers. When Ailes and the Fox News anchor Chris Wallace tried to deny the way the cable newschannel favored conservatives, I was there, again, with access I would never have gotten any other way.
Most recently, in February, I asked producers from The Bachelor franchise why the show has struggled to handle racial issues – leading to losing its longtime host Chris Harrison and, possibly, the show’s creator Mike Fleiss. Their eight seconds of silence before a roomful of TV critics spoke volumes and sparked headlines nationwide.
There are few other major industries in America where the people who run things are expected to regularly face a group of journalists asking questions, sometimes pointed, about the decisions they have made. Given that media is occupying an increasing portion of our lives, having a forum where the press can interrogate the work of newscasters, documentarians, reality TV producers, media executives, series showrunners and big stars in public is incredibly valuable – both to journalists and the general public.
Tumblr media
(former ABC entertainment president Jamie Tarses faced tough questions from reporters at TCA in 1997.)
The TCA tour has drawn lots of barbs over the years, from complaints from TV outlets about how much it costs to present press conferences, receptions and special events, to criticisms about the value of promotional items given to critics (that’s been severely toned down from the time, decade ago, when one network handed me a free cellphone after a press conference. I handed it back, noting it was far too valuable a gift to accept.)
But, as a former TCA board member from many years ago, I think what really rankles some in the TV industry is how little control they have over what happens at tours. Despite loads of coaching from experienced publicists, it is tough to predict what questions will be asked during a 40-minute press session, and an off-the-mark response can resonate for a while (Besides The Bachelor producers, I remember stars like Roseanne Barr, Katherine Heigl and even Donald Trump earning lots of critical coverage from bad press tour appearances.)
Entertainment trade publications have also often cast shade on the press tour, which regularly invites legions of less powerful and more removed journalists into the kind of access they usually enjoy.
What keeps the tour going, beyond its value to TCA members, is the ever-increasing need for publicity to punch through a media environment filled with more noise, distraction and competition than ever. Those who make TV need more ways to reach consumers, and the TCA tours still offer programmers the opportunity to reach journalists who connect with millions of consumers every day.
If the TCA press tours go away, what will be left is overly stage-managed press conferences wholly controlled by the TV outlets, with access severely limited to journalists and critics in big cities like New York and Los Angeles.
I hope that doesn’t happen. Because my time at the TCA has been among the most rewarding experiences in a long career, offering a window into the TV industry that is unparalleled and always enlightening.
