I was talking to a friend about painting references in movies, and I was googling and found a bunch of misinformation, if you can believe it! Here is an easy one. This scene:

is not a reference to Wanderer above the Sea of Fog:

It is a reference to Dersu Uzala, a Kurosawa film:

Dersu Uzala is an unusual Kurosawa film because it's in color and in Russian. It came out in 1975, just two years before Star Wars. The binary sunset is actually our own sun and moon.

Lucas' favorite inspiration was Kurosawa, and Williams' favorite inspiration was Stravinsky. Check with those guys first!

Binary Sunset is filled with such intense yearning I actually feel my chest tighten when I listen to it

Luke is standing alone, silently watching the two suns drop lower to the horizon, marking the end of this chapter of his life,

on the cusp of a great adventure, the likes of which he’s always dreamed of but never truly thought possible,

having watched his friends leave for the academy while he remains tied down to the farm by family obligations,

and now he’s being given the chance to do something truly meaningful, to leave Tatooine and join the Rebellion and follow in his father’s footsteps,

his father whom he never knew, not even through stories because his aunt and uncle denied him that knowledge,

the hope for a better future, the desperate longing to escape, the fear of leaving behind everything he’s ever known,

all captured in the quiet horns and swelling strings of this song that lasts all of forty seconds

A lighting exercise I made in Unreal Engine. I wanted to do a variation on the classic daytime shot of Ben Kenobi's hut with the binary sunset. The hut, speeder and moisture vaporator were modelled in Maya and textured in Substance Painter.
