Life Tip: Slacks Pockets

Have you ever bought a pair of slacks or a suit jacket that looked like it had a pocket but it was all closed up?

I don't know who might find this useful, but manufacturers baste some pockets closed so they don't accumulate lint and junk during manufacturing. You're supposed to unbaste them when you get them home. So if you have something that has a "pocket" like this, check inside the garment and see if it's an actual pocket that's just basted closed.

Yep, that's a full-sized pocket -- and look! There's a line of wide stitches there!

These stitches aren't anchored or back-stitched, so they're really easy to pull out with your fingers. You don't even need a seam ripper. Just flick the end of the line of stitches with your fingernail to find the end of the thread, and then you can gently pull.

You might need to give it a good tug. I pulled from the center a little, to loosen it more.

And then it's free!

Turn it back over to the other side to pull out the other line of loose string left over... It'll just come right out.

And tada! You have a functional pocket!
