Thief 2014 Transcript: Dirty Secrets

Once again Thief-Taker General is being shortened to TTG. I left out NPC conversations that can be found on the wiki, so most of it is Garrett commenting on his own actions. Also, this level has one of my favorite cutscenes in the entire game. XD

It’s going to be a bit before I post the next one, as I’m still transcribing A Friend in Need. Stay tuned!

CHAPTER 3: DIRTY SECRETS

I snatched the ring Basso wanted straight from the fingers of the Thief-Taker General himself; the Baron’s hound. But that doesn’t give me answers. First Basso tells me I’ve been away from the City for an entire year and then the Queen of Beggars says I was sleeping since the beggars found my body. So why don’t I remember? Maybe I have this gloom that’s going around.

[Off to Erin’s place.]

GARRETT: There’s an old mill in the Riverside that Erin used to call home. I should go take a look inside.

GARRETT: Erin once told me she trapped the place to stop unwelcome visitors. I’ll need to step lightly.

ERIN: You’ve never been here before, have you?

GARRETT: Erin? How are you here? You died!

ERIN: What’s the matter, Garrett? Did I finally get the drop on you? Maybe this is where the dead wait when they’ve got nowhere else to go. And now you’re here. Are you dead, Garrett? Follow me to the truth. I watched you. I wanted to be you. We’re so alike. But why did I even try? The world already has a Garrett.

GARRETT: What do you want from me?

ERIN: I want you to steal a key to the truth. It’s from before I left home, before I became Erin. But you have to find it yourself. Those are the rules. Start looking. I’ll tell you when you’re close.

[Garrett pokes one of Erin’s drawings of him.]

ERIN: NO!

GARRETT: It’s almost as if Erin wanted me to find something. I can’t leave without checking. [Finds the medallion.] What is this? And why did Erin have it?

[Heading to the House of Blossoms.]

GARRETT: This strutting rooster is being led right to the henhouse. I’ll play the fox.

GARRETT: I might be dressed in leather, but I don’t think I’ll pass as the cabaret act for the evening. I’ll have to sneak inside.

[Inside the House of Blossoms.]

GARRETT: The Madam’s chambers would be a good place to start. If I don’t spoil the mood in here, I can fill my pockets, too. Right now, there’s not enough opium to smoke the guards out of the nest.

GARRETT: Something strange is going on. I’ll find this hidden passage Madame Xiao Xiao mentioned for myself. It must be in here.

GARRETT: Let’s see what’s worth hiding in this house of whispers.

GARRETT: The podium X mentioned in her journal… This is older than the House of Blossoms. The medallion fits in the podium. The symbols are some sort of code, or key. [Sees some markings on the wall.] I know this birdscratch. It’s one of the markings on the medallion. There must be more.

GARRETT: This has gone forgotten for a long time, but history lasts day to day in this city, and it keeps its secrets close… We have that much in common.

GARRETT: There must be some way to disable these ancient traps.

GARRETT: You said I’d find a book, Orion. Not a whole library. There must be hundreds of tomes here.

[Sees a Freak.]

GARRETT: Whatever that is, it doesn’t look human.

GARRETT: Educated guess, this is the book I came for. But to steal it, I’ll have to release it.

BARON NORTHCREST: Aldous, Cornelius, the keys… [The book flashes several times.]

GARRETT: I’ve got the book. This has been a night under the town to remember.

[He ends up under the Thief-Taker General’s bed.]

THIEF-TAKER GENERAL: Punish me, mother. I’ve been baaad, sooo baaaad… Wait! Don’t… touch me! My leg hurts!

BLOSSOM: What’s the matter, General? Mummy a little too much for you?

TTG: Don’t ever speak of my mother like that again, you little whore!

BLOSSOM: [Screams]

TTG: Get over here!

BLOSSOM: [Screams again]

MADAM XIAO-XIAO: What’s going on her, General? That’s it. Take your Black Tax and get out of my house.

MADAM X: Touch her again… and I’ll cut your balls off. Don’t test me on this.

[A scuffle that ends with Garrett pinned by the bed against the wall.]

GARRETT: Duahh!

TTG: You! Filthy rat! I’m gonna kill you!

TTG: Thief!

GARRETT: You ought to be nicer with the ladies.

TTG: You’re gonna regret this…
