"RELIEF WORKERS ASKING TO BE PAID IN CASH," North Bay Nugget. November 27, 1933. Page 2. ---- Blind River, Nov. 27. More than 100 men employed on the Matinenda Road and many others employed on other road work have forwarded a petition to Queen's Park, asking that payment for road work be by cash instead of by voucher. The petition was drawn up and signed at a meeting held in the town hall last week. The suggestion was also made that a board camp be established on the Matinenda road, instead of transporting the workers to and from the 13 miles daily. The men complained that it is very cold riding to work in the open body of a truck.

Wheeling Feeling Chili Cookoff Raises More Than $8,000 for United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley
Tumblr media
The 23rd annual Wheeling Feeling Chili Cookoff held last Saturday at Wheeling’s Heritage Port raised a total of $8,370 for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. A check presentation was held Tuesday at the City-County Building. “On behalf of the Chili Cookoff Committee, I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in making this event a success - from the administration and employees of the City of Wheeling and WesBanco Arena to the volunteers, sponsors and cooks. We could not have done it without you,” said Committee Chair Rosemary Humway-Warmuth. “We look forward to the 2024 cookoff on June 1. That’s plenty of time for folks to work on and perfect their chili recipes.” Thirty-six International Chili Society (ICS) competitors came to Wheeling from throughout the United States, while one contestant came from Ontario, Canada. Commercial and restaurant participants from the Wheeling area included Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack, TJ’s Sports Garden/Main Street Bank, Public Market, Generations/Wheeling Nailers, WesBanco, Oglebay, The Soup Kitchen, Ruttenbucks and River City. “We are so grateful to the City of Wheeling and everyone who was involved in putting on this wonderful event. Seeing all the individual cooks and restaurants show up to make chili for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley was heartwarming and we cannot thank everyone enough,” said United Way Executive Director Staci Stephen. “The funds that were raised will go to the United Way’s annual campaign that serves over 20 nonprofits in the Ohio Valley. Thank you to everyone who cooked, volunteered, sponsored and planned. We are so appreciative!” The first-place winners in the ICS categories include the following: Jason Willis of Harrisburgh, Pa, Salsa; Lynne Berkebille of Cleveland, Verde; John Harwell of Columbus, Homestyle; and Nathan Graham of Harrisburg, Pa., Traditional Red; and Dave Bartsch of St. Clairsville, Ohio, People’s Choice. All will advance to represent Wheeling in the World Chili Cookoff in Myrtle Beach this September. Commercial Restaurant winners include the following: Blind Tasting category - River City, first place; Ruttenbucks, second place; and Oglebay, third place; People’s Choice category – Oglebay. Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack took home the awards for Best Booth Decorations and Showmanship. More than $6,000 in prize money was awarded to the successful cooks. Read the full article

"HIGHGRADER FINED IN JUDGE'S COURT THIS MORNING," Sault Star. June 13, 1912. Page 1. ---- Had Silver Ore in His Possession Running $6 to the Pound. ---- JOHN HORTON IS GUILTY OF ASSAULT ---- But Still Has Charge of More Serious Nature to Answer. ---- In the District Judge's Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Stone yesterday, John Horton, of Blind River, in custody on charges of indecent assault and carnal knowledge, was found guilty of the former charge and sentence will be pronounced when he appears on the second charge on June 29. The mother of the girl upon whom the offence was committed appeared in court and gave evidence. Solicitor McArthur, of Blind River appeared for the prisoner, and the case for the crown was in charge of Crown Attorney Moses McFadden.
Charged with stealing $11 from Thomas Wilson, Samuel Essler appeared before Judge Stone when the court was resumed this morning, and was discharged. According to the evidence the money alleged to have been stolen comprised one $10 bill and two $1 bills. A ten and a one were found on the prisoner, but Wilson could not identify the bills. Essler's mother appeared in court and was prepared to say that she had given her son $11 on the Sunday prior to the day of the alleged theft. U. McFadden for defendant.
William Lappe and Jacob Ponkeri, the latter of the Sault, and the former of various addresses and aliases appeared in court this morning on a charge of high grading. It will be remembered that the trunks belonging to Lappe were taken in charge by Provincial Constable Connor after their delivery at Ponkeri's house on Murray street and both men were arrested.
Solicitor Rowland appeared for Lappe this morning and entered pleas of not guilty, contending that Lappe had already been convicted on a charge of having the ore in his possession at Cobalt, and could not therefore be charged again for the same offence. It appears that the man purchased a quantity of the ore which is very rich and is said to run from six to seven dollars to the pound. and after disposing of at quantity, of it buried the balance. After serving six months in jail he dug up the bur ied ore and brought it to the Sault, where he was apprehended thru the activity of Constable Connor, as related above. Mr. Rowland held that the ore was a quantity of that involved in the original conviction, and for which Lappe had paid the penalty.
Crown Attorney Moses McFadden submitted that upon conviction all the ore in the case became the possession of the crown, and in digging ---- of theft in taking what was not his. The case was threshed out at some length, and finally after consultation with the crown Mr. Rowland 'withdrew the plea of not guilty and pleaded guilty to the charge. Lappe, who according to information in possession of the crown had been arrested former occasions for similar offences was fined $150 and costs, amounting in all to $250.
Ponkori was discharged, Solicitor U. McFadden, who defended him, submitting that he had no knowledge of the contents of the trunk when taken to his home at the request a Lappe.
