Hunter Heroici haunts me, because it says chasing happiness can’t be solely about running away
i.e. you have to face your actions and integrate the good and the bad parts of your psyche
Apple Pie Life for Sam is, in this view, a meager half-life, a false “Charming Acres” wrapped in golden hues, like a happy gas that blots out all the harder parts of living. Compared to Hunting, the Romanticized Home Life is The Balm of Escape.
And in this same episode, we have Cas goofing off with the whole “becoming a hunter and interrogating the cat” stuff. He’s having a grand ole time and he knows he’s Being Silly with it. Here, the Idealized Hunting with Friends Life is Cas's Apple Pie, The Balm of Escape from brutal soldierhood.
As mirage-home is to Sam, silly-hunting is to Cas. (Here, perhaps Sam & Dean are Cas’s symbolic Ben & Lisa, which is also why he tends to want to shield them from harsh world of Heavenly War.)
The specter of The Apple Pie life, when carried to its extreme, can be a false, idealized happiness. (It's not happiness itself that is the problem. It's that it's not an integrated happiness when it's weighted too far into escapism.) This "fantasy-life” is in sharp contrast to the messy business of living your life as your complicated, imperfect self and showing all your warts to those around you.
And yet it’s important to note that the tempting traps of penance & suicide loom large in this season, too...
Dean's blood-donation (coded-as-organ-donation-in-the-form-of-a-cooler) symbolizes his tendency to sustain the life of Others at his own expense; i.e. sustaining Benny’s addiction-in-order-to-keep-him-on-the-straight-and-narrow (and even bearing some of Sam’s parallel struggles)
Dean's simplified Purgatory world of black-and-white kill-or-be-killed (no-mistakes-can-be-made-here-no-one-can-let-me-down-here) is his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with hunting in a complex world AND maladaptively dealing with disappointment
Cas's staying-behind-in-Purgatory is metaphorical-suicide for what he did to Heaven (and yet, Heaven comes to rescue him; he cannot escape)
Later, Cas's Heaven trials are his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with Endless Heavenly Wars
And of course, Sam's Hell trials are his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with hunting in a world overrun with threats
These are ALL different kinds of extremes of “checking out of life,” and they will all learn that this extreme of not integrating both the Good & Bad parts, and of giving up Self to serve Others, is as unsustainable as is diving into the drunken happy kind of escapism.
It's about integration: family + past actions + mistakes + internal wants + personal needs + duty & obligations.
The path to the Apple Pie Life is in obliterating its Romanticization. The path to Penance is in truly valuing the Imperfect Self.

Earth 3 Black Canary
The White Cat costume first appeared in JLA: Earth-2 and it's placement in a display case is a reference to the Golden Age Black Canary members of the JSA who would later become the mother to the modern age Black Canary.
Her second appearance this time in the flesh was in Countdown #31 as a member of the Crime Society this worlds JSA. If I had to guess this would be the daughter of the first White Cat.
Scream Queen was the name of the earth 3 Black Canary counterpart seen in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths working as a maid man for Johnny Quick. Her name is a reference to Nina Skorzeny the lead singer of the monstrous band Scare Tactics and both of them take their name from the phrase "Scream Queen" which was used to describe Fay Wray performance in the first King Kong Movie and would go on to be a phrases commonly used when referring to women in horror movies.
Lastly but most recently Black Siren aka Dinah first appearing is a cameo in Crime Syndicate #2 she then went on to have a speaking role in Suicide Squad #5 in which she was forcefully recruited to the primary Suicide Squad by Bloodsport. Her outfit of course is based on her appearance in League: Crisis on Two Earths and took her name from the heroic character who was a reference to the golden age Black Canary and appeared in the Justice League TV Show Episode: 18.
The identity was also used as an evil earth 2 Dinah Laurel Lance on the arrow TV show.

[ UNPROMPTED | ALWAYS ACCEPTING ]
@shinsaki asked:
“I know who you are. I don’t want yer lousy Christmas presents. Now take your elf and go back to wherever you came from”
“ ...Do I look like Santa Claus ‘ta ya?? ” Never mind that it’s not even anywhere near Christmas. He’s been hanging outside the brat’s window all morning; if the kid thinks he can be fobbed off so easily, then his dad has obviously never shared how Shinji basically badgered him into submission back in the day and turned him into a member of their little cult hobby group-
“ C’mon, Shin-chan, Shinnnn-channnn. Lemme in already, or I’mma start singin’ the song that never ends~ ”

Battlegrave - Cavernous Depths
One of my favorite things to do is to go into the depths of Bandcamp or Apple Music to see what came out in certain genres, especially death, thrash, and traditional heavy metal. Those are my favorite styles of metal, so I love seeing what’s new. There’s nothing better than diving into the dumpster that’s Bandcamp, and trying to find new and underground bands, whether they’re signed to an indie label or completely unsigned. Just from doing that in the last month, I’ve found new albums from Traitor, Assault, Dissentience, Maul, and a few other bands, but another band that I found while on Bandcamp is Australian crossover-turned-death-metal band Battlegrave. These guys are a duo that only have two albums under their bullet belts, including their sophomore album, Cavernous Depths. I found their debut on Bandcamp, too, 2018′s Relics Of A Dead Earth, but I saw that they had a new album on the way. Unfortunately, it took a few days for Cavernous Depths to show up on Apple Music, so I spent a few days listening to that, too, and that record is best summed up as a solid death-thrash album that doesn’t throw you for any loops, but if you like that style of thrash, you’ll enjoy it. I didn’t really know what to expect from Cavernous Depths, however, and that’s a completely good thing, because it seems like they switched up their sound a little bit here.
Right off the bat, this album leans heavily into their death metal sound, especially with their vocalist being one of the best and most versatile vocalists I’ve heard in a while. Not only do these guys go for a death metal sound in a lot of places, they still utilize thrash, but they also add traces of black metal here and there. Their vocalist can range from having those low growls that death metal is known for, the shouted vocals that thrash is known for, as well as the high screeches that black metal is also known for, and all in all, the vocals are very good on this record. He’s very fluid and versatile with his style, and it never stays the same, even just on a single track. I love vocalists that can switch up on a dime like that, it’s very good. Their sound is kind of the same, taking elements of death metal, thrash, hardcore, groove metal, and black metal. The album’s a bit of a mess because of that, but I don’t have to a lot to say about this, especially negatively. It’s a mish-mash of sub-genres, but that’s not a bad thing whatsoever. They make it work pretty well, even though they mainly lean on the death-thrash sound of their debut. They just really push through the death metal this time around. You’ll hear some thrash riffs, but throughout its 41-minute runtime, they’ll utilize a lot more death metal. If you enjoy death-thrash, and you’re okay with some black metal and groove metal seasoning on top, you’ll have a good time with this, especially with a killer vocalist on deck.
