Finally got around to watching Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (1995).
I've never seen a more accurate and affectionate homage to another director's work. It is by no means a "rip-off", but is instead a sincere love letter to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films.
Writer and director Shinichi Fukuzawa even expertly emulates Bruce Campbell as the title protagonist--right down to his facial expressions and mannerisms. I would dare say, however, that Shinji (who is repeatedly called "Naoto" throughout the film, and I'm not sure why) is possibly more powerful than Ash--the main difference being Shinji's body building obsession. Mind you, I say this as a diehard Bruce fan.
There are some cheaper effects using still frames, but these are easily forgivable. While the film nails Sam's use of dutch angles and frantic editing, it still manages to be distinctive to itself, and distinctive to Japanese culture. I can't say whether it's intentional or not, but the evil entity towards the end has a look reminiscent of the artwork of famed horror mangaka Hideshi Hino.
This film is a must-see for horror fans. If you love both The Evil Dead and Hausu, think of this like their lovingly-raised offspring.

Chris: Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell is also known as The Japanese Evil Dead, and that is a good description, made in 1995 and released in 2012, this film isn’t made to look older, it is older, originally a direct to video film, good for a midnight horror film, Watch: On Subscription Service.
Richie: If you like the original Sam Rami’s Evil Dead you will enjoy this, it’s not great but it is fun, Watch: On Subscription Service.
