IN THE RED CORNER, we have a featherweight clash that's going to have you on the edge of your seats! we have the king of the australian outback, the KOOKABURRA!

Top five mushrooms or top five birds
thank youuu 🥰🥰 im no expert on mushrooms…
but one i really like (simply because its such a pretty blue) is the mycena interrupta, also called pixies parasol!!
five of my favorite birds so cute!! first is the corn crake, whose german name translates to quail king !! i had a really cute childrens book about quail kings i think, so i remember them really fondly and also i just love their name… they were called quail kings because when they hunted quails en masse during the middle ages, sometimes a corn crake would slip in with the quails and since they looked much alike, except the corn crake being a bit bigger, they would call them quail kings…
then, the european robin !! i just think they look so pretty, i love that theyre just literally round, and its THE winter bird for me. when i think of a redbreasted robin, i picture him sitting on a snowy branch in a snowy forest surrounding a frozen lake 🌨❤️
then the eurasian jay!! i love their blue feathers and yes i am incredibly biased towards the color blue but !!!!!! ah!!!!! blue feathers… i love seeing them in forests & a while ago i found a small blue jay feather with my mom.. supposedly they bring luck! 💙
fourth the common kingfisher!! on german called ice bird…i love how he looks, so beautiful, and ive seen one three times… the first time with my dad who would not believe me that really was a kingfisher, second by myself, at the same pond, and the third when i was on a walk with my parents but neither of them saw the bird :(( idk hes a special bird to me…
green woodpecker 🥰 he looks really silly and i hear his call a lot in the spring time, which is ALSO really silly and which i love a lot. it sounds a bit like laughter! not as bad as a kookaburra, but still a noise that makes you go huh if you dont know it!!

Second-rate images
I mentioned that the images in my blog were often not my best image of the particular species. The reason for this was probably laziness. I was eager to launch the blog so I used some of the photos that I accumulated in a particular folder a year or two ago. That folder contained many of the bird photos I had taken in the previous 2-3 years – but were specifically collected to indicate features of the species that might aid identification: often poor photos, but indicative of the features I was trying to portray rather than great pics of the birds themselves.
I have subsequently taken a lot more photos, some of which are better representations of those features as well as of many species I had been unable to include in my original collection. I will try to update my collection in the next month or so and where appropriate, replace some of the poorer images with better ones if I find them.

The sound of birds
We all love birdsong and everyone probably has a favourite bird whose song or call evokes some special memories or feelings. I have several.
Many people love the carolling of the Magpie or the cackle of the Laughing Kookaburra (perhaps not so much the maniacal screech of the Blue-winged Kookaburra). For me, two of my favourites are the Grey and Pied Butcherbirds. They seem to emit such pure tones when they call from the top of a building or the upmost twig of a dead tree. Their song is eerily spine-tingling and carries a long way, especially in cooler weather (at least it seems that way to me). Their carolling is louder and more diverse than a Magpie’s and evokes a sense of open space and peaceful contentment in me.
I also love the Pied Currawong, but perhaps for different reasons. Their calls are also almost pure tones and carry a long way, often echoing around a little, making the call slightly more complex. I used to hear them in Canberra, but the first time I really noticed their beauty was at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains where their calls resounded across the Megalong Valley from dawn until after dusk. They were also a feature of many of my wonderful times in Sydney and whenever I hear one, it transports me back to some of the best times of my life. Their calls are very evocative and trigger reminiscences of special times and places of excitement and exoticism – all very emotional for me.
The Common Blackbird is also a wonderful songster. It sits atop the highest point in its territory, whether in the city or the bush, and sings its heart out just before dark. It is another very musical bird with a range of songs that evoke special feelings of quiet, calm and gentleness, even melancholy, at the end of day.
In contrast to the musicality of these birds, I discovered two birds when I was in Sydney that engender quite different feelings. I recall hearing what sounded like a baby in distress crying time and time again over almost 2 days, but I couldn’t track the poor child down. Then when we were eating a takeaway in the El Alamein Gardens in Kings Cross, I heard it again – in the tree above us. A local identified it for us as an Eastern Koel. We have subsequently seen both males and females on a few occasions, but didn’t realise that they sometimes migrated south into Victoria – until one Sunday morning when I was introducing a small group of seniors to birding in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Out of the blue (literally), Heather and I heard a distinctive call and both immediately said ‘That’s a Koel’. Sure enough, very high in the clear blue sky, a male Koel flew from west to east across the Gardens and disappeared from sight – a wonderful and quite unexpected lifer for all in the group (except Heather and me).
Another very distinctive, somewhat raucous call is emitted by the Channel-billed Cuckoo. The first time we saw and heard them was when we alighted from the train to take a boat trip up the Hawkesbury River from Brooklyn. Just as we were leaving, the surrounding trees came alive with several shrieking birds, chasing each other from tree to tree and shattering the silence with the most dramatic calls. They are very distinctive large birds and they were instant lifers for us, but their call is so distinctive that we have since identified them several times from at least 2 or 3 kilometres away across the Harbour. We have heard their call, recognised it immediately, and found the birds quite quickly with our binoculars despite them being such a long way away.

Port Moresby Nature Park
Port Moresby Nature Park
Understandably one of the most popular places in Port Moresby, the Nature Park is the best (or at least the easiest and cheapest by some margin) way to see the incredible native animals of Papua New Guinea up close.
The first enclosure was a converted WW2 structure relocated from downtown Port Moresby. It was home to some of the most colourful birds in the park, such as the Eclectus Parrot,…

Stop The Donald Trump Steal!!
.
Absolutely Hilarious ..
As He Slowly Goes Broke Donald Trump And
Sexual Harasser Bill O’Reilly Will Both Go On
A Speaking Tour In December With Tickets On
Sale Now.
This Is Conflicts With QAnon’s Latest Conspiracy
That Donald Trump Will Be Reinstated As
President In August.
From The Article
The latest? They can’t imagine why Donald Trump is promoting a December tour with Bill O’Reilly when he’s supposed to be back in the White House in August and O’Reilly is presumably scheduled for a series of painful face-splotchectomies.
Newsweek:
QAnon supporters have acted with dismay and confusion after Donald Trump announced the December dates of his upcoming speaking tour with Bill O'Reilly, which coincides with when he is meant to have already been reinstated as president.[…]
The announcement was shared by a number of popular QAnon telegram accounts, one of which has nearly 75,000 subscribers on the encrypted messaging service app.
Supporters of the radical movement expressed concerns that Trump going on a speaking tour later this year surely means that he will not be returning as president—a false claim they have continued to believe since he lost the 2020 election more than seven months ago.
I really wonder what these people will do when Sept. 1 comes around and Trump is still ensconced, Taft-like, in his toilet. How many times can they move the goalposts before they—like the QAnon people themselves—are on another planet?
According to the announcement, Trump and O’Reilly have several December dates scheduled in Florida and Texas. But if Trump really thinks he’ll be back by then—which has been widely reported to be the case—then why is he fixin’ to go on tour with Pile O’Bile-y?
Newsweek collected several alarmed responses from QAnon cultists posting on Telegram about this vexing bait-and-switch.
A sampling:
"OK I GUESS MY QUESTION IS TRUMP COMING BACK? WHY WOULD HE BE DOING A TOUR THRU THE END OF THE YEAR WITH O'REILLY. HMMMMMMMMM SOMETHING DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT?” —Telegram user Peace Lilly
"So nothing will happen until December?" —Tina N.
"Man I sure hope we don't have to wait that long before you're back in office." —Jack Miller
"So basically the August thing is a bunch of bull because a reinstated President doesn't go on tour.” —Angela Baldwin
Oh, Angela Baldwin, you are sharp. I imagine that’s exactly how Archimedes felt just before shouting “Eureka!”
Of course, many QAnoners and other Trumpy dead-enders are hanging their hopes on either Pillow Man Mike Lindell’s barmy assurances or the Arizona fraudit, which they believe will touch off a domino effect wherein one blue state after another falls back into Donald Trump’s column. Because there’s zero chance that the most vulgar, deceitful man on the planet—a man who never polled over 50% approval at any time during his presidency—could have possibly lost a national election.
Of course, some QAnoners appeared to be hedging their bets: "It's only a few dates close together...it could be done if it works out like it should...could cancel....but yup..kinda a gut punch statement," one wrote. "But we are in an information war, so who the hell knows."
Who the hell knows? Not you, that’s for sure. But most of us do, oddly enough—because we’re not getting our information from rando kookaburras on Telegram.
And, yes, it’s possible that Trump will cancel his serial sexual harasser tour with O’Reilly, but not because he’ll be president. It’ll be because his muscles have taken on the texture of Gerber’s mashed pears and he can’t get through the auditorium doors without a crowbar and a can of Crisco.
Or maybe—just maybe—he’ll be defending himself in court. A man can dream, right?
It made comedian Sarah Silverman say “THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT” and prompted author Stephen King to shout “Pulitzer Prize!!!” (on Twitter, that is). What is it? The viral letter that launched four hilarious Trump-trolling books. Get them all, including the finale, Goodbye, Asshat: 101 Farewell Letters to Donald Trump, at this link. Just $12.96 for the pack of 4!

New Post has been published on http://malleedesign.com.au/photo-competition-entries-and-winner/
Photo Competition Entries and Winner!
Our photo competition is finished and we’ve been absolutely blown away by all our entries. The submissions represent so many different birds and locations across Australia that we couldn’t resist putting them all in one blog post with the winner! Thank you to everyone who sent photos in to us – they have been the source of much excitement and wonder over the last month and for those who have jumped on the bird photography bandwagon Birdlife has their Australian Photography Competition opening on the 28th May, which is another great opportunity to share beautiful photos of your birds.
The winning shot *drumroll* is of this captivating honeyeater in flight by Robyn Bowman. It’s a Brown Honeyeater taking off from her dish near Gympie, Queensland, with tiny droplets of water exploding around it. The sparkling lights in the garden background and wingbeat of the free flying bird really make this photo something special. We have come back to gaze at it again and again and want to say a big thank you and congratulations Robyn! The Brown Honeyeater is sometimes considered a plain and uninteresting bird, but its quiet, courageous nature shines through here.
We had plenty of other striking and stunning submissions, which are presented below. The first are John Harris’s shots of a White-Headed Pigeon and Striped Marsh Frog using his birdbath in Woombye, QLD. The white of the pigeon stands out like a beacon in front of the lush forest background while the Marsh frog blends almost perfectly with the copper of the dish as it perches on a piece of broken ceramic. Both are great quality images, and it was fantastic to see the range of wildlife coming to visit his dish.
Next are Adele Noble’s female Fairy Wrens, Weebill and a Yellow-faced Honeyeater that love her ground-level dish. The Wrens in the first image seem to be enjoying a group splash, and we often see Fairy Wren females visiting birdbaths together (while the males seem to travel alone and can be very tricky to capture!). It’s nice to see natives growing in her garden, which will encourage more native birds into the area too. The Correa behind the dish is good shelter for the small birds to hide in and there’s a lovely thick carpet of Myoporum establishing to the left hand side.
Brad Decent sent us a photo and video (below) of a what looks like a Swamp Wallaby using a dish on his rural property, something we’ve suspected but never seen happen in a dish before! It’s a stunner, the Wallaby looking up between sips to scan the landscape. We love to see other animals using the birdbaths and camera traps are great for capturing otherwise unseen use waterbowls.
Another photo of a Wallaby came to use from Jo-Anne Pittman in Adelaide Hills, its expression gentle and mesmerising. She also captured a confident Currawong and some Adelaide Rosellas splashing about in her dish that backs onto some beautiful bushland. The Adelaide Rosella are a race of Crimson Rosella, which has several colour variants across its range so it was exciting to see these ones that we’ve never encountered before.
Birdbaths on balconies are often underrated so we were delighted to receive these images from Erica Nathan in Hobart. Her large birdbath, surrounded by pot plants looks lovely in the afternoon light and those Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are not afraid to land on it! Doesn’t the one in flight look like batman?!
Sulphur-crested Cockies are suburban kings that occur in all Australia’s major cities, Kathy Lack on the Gold Coast, QLD, also got some lovely photos of them. She captured some Magpies too (seen below) and has a gorgeous rust-red tree stump that she’s mounted her birdbath on.
From Lesley and Paul Herbet in the lower Blue Mountains we recieved this photo of their Gerygones who visit them often. They hop to and from the Westringia behind the dish in between baths and drinks. It’s another smart placement of a birdbath near the shrubbery of the garden so that birds can flit in between them.
One of the photos we really love is this closeup of a Magpie Lark preening, sent in by Maree Davison in Lake Macquarie. You can even see the fluffy white down it’s pulling out from under the wing as it cleans its feathers after a bath. In her second photo the characteristically inquisitive eye of a Magpie stares up towards the camera (they can recognise different human faces), and in the final shot two wattlebirds perch on the edge of her dish surrounded by natives, the fluffy one (on the left) certainly looks like its been for a swim!
This Magpie-lark in Mark Forth’s photograph is having a paddle. Our dishes are designed so that birds can walk into them from the edge of the dish, which is exactly what his Magpie-Lark is doing.
Hiding behind the spiky leaves of a Xanthorrhoea is a Kookaburra in Michelle McAuslan’s Bondi garden. We love how the dish emerges out of the bracken ferns planted underneath and see that she also gets Magpies and Currawongs visiting as seen in the photos below.
Although not a Mallee Dish, Louise Tucker sent us this photograph of one of our favourite local birds – a Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo. Yellow-tails feed on and are often seen in Banksia trees such as the one behind Lousie’s dish, so it’s not surprising he/she turned up at her birdbath. Small flocks of Yellow-tails often move between flowering trees throughout the day and have beaks that can break into the hard Banksia cones.
Sue Kelly in Federal, NSW, photographed a vibrant party of Rainbow Lorikeets having fun in her copper dish. Up close the little red eyes on these birds almost make them look evil! But they seem to be having a very good time bathing a splashing around. Her final photo is one of a Crested Pigeon taking a deep drink from the water and we love that you can lots of detail of the feathers in her pictures.
And that’s it folks! We hope that you’ll keep sending us photos of what’s visiting your dishes and for those who don’t yet have a Mallee birdbath we’re planning to run another photo competition based on native gardens in the next few months where you’ll have an opportunity to win a dish.
We’ll keep you posted,
The Mallee team 🙂
