I really enjoy Robert Thorogood’s novels, and this one is no exception. It was great to be back in Marlow with Judith, Suzie, and Becks investigating another murder, this time of mayor Geoffrey Lushington who was poisoned in the middle of a council meeting. Our trio are brought on as civilian advisers by the…

i'd love to say i finished smth this week, but i really didn't asdfghjkl
i ended up giving up on the girls are never gone about halfway through. i tried, i really fucking did, but i couldn't do it. dare is so unlikeable and inconsistent as a main character, the romance was dull, the horror wasn't scary, and the voice performance didn't always fit with the text. i appreciate the diabetes rep throughout, but that's about it.
also tried two non-fiction texts (bolinda guide to magic, and the same but for imperial china) and couldn't get into either at all. combination of the text itself being quite dense and poorly designed for audio (imperial china literally opened with a spoken timeline of dynasties, it just became white noise after the first six or so) and the actual readings themselves not being great.
the traitor baru cormorant is still good but i've still not finished it. every time i go to pick it up smth else happens and it gets shelved again 😅
am a tiny bit of the way through the faceless ones (skulduggery pleasant 3) and tho this is where the romance subplots start turning up (which i didn't like, except for one) i'm looking forward to it cos it really leans into cosmic horror later on.
short update, was basically a lot of disappointment all at once which is less than ideal. but! there's always next week!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for this audio copy of The Luminaries.
As soon as I read the blurb I knew I had to read The Luminaries and as soon as I saw the audiobook, I knew I had to request it.
The Narrator Caitlin Davies was perfect for this novel, her voice complimented the story really well. I just found her perfect for Winnie's sarcastic undertones and she pulled you into the story with ease.
The Luminaries on a whole I found was fantastic, I really enjoyed the concept and the storyline was one that I was eager to run along with. I absolutely loved Winnie, initially an outcast became a favourite due to circumstances that never happened, yet she was still strong enough to go along with it. She had determination and I really liked that about her. I did think at the end when she's listing off things she didn't do, I wanted to shout at her because she still survived them.
The interactions with all the characters felt realistic for teenagers and the progression within the story felt organic.
The ending - wow! What a twist.
I originally thought this was a standalone but with that I'm assuming it's not and I can't wait!

I can’t believe I’d never read this book before. It was a fantastic mystery, full of surprises and plot twists. Although it was a murder mystery, the characters were absolutely central as Aiden Bishop inhabits the bodies of people in the house in an attempt to solve the murder that hasn’t happened yet. It’s…
