For hire: Free agent mystery writer
Baseball fans will understand the term: Designated for assignment. That makes  me, Mystery Writer, free agent. But I don’t have to pass through waivers. The want ad says: Open to right offer. This came about because the publisher of my five Frank Nagler Mysteries, Imzadi Publishing of Tulsa, Ok., is shutting down after than more than decade in  business. Thank you, Janice and Anita and Kay,…

So who wants to listen to me ramble why an Empire reestablished by Grand Admiral Thrawn would be an “Empire” in name only? Nobody? Well that’s too bad, because you’re going to hear it. ^_^
Tumblr media
Whether you like how it’s being portrayed or not, Thrawn’s ultimate goal as of the events in Ahsoka is to reestablish the Galactic Empire, all to help the Ascendancy against critical threats like the Grysks. Timothy Zahn has even stated this as such.
But it’d be an Empire in name only, as I just don’t see him being Emperor, nor do I even see him having someone in mind to be his figurehead/puppet ruler. After all, Thrawn is shown in canon (or the books at least) as being terrible at playing politics, which Palpatine was a master at thanks to the Force. I don’t even know who he’d even choose as Emperor, as ultimately what Thrawn wants is an overwhelming military power to crush the threats to the Ascendancy and his people, over anything else.
Realistically, any government led by Thrawn would be a military junta, where he works alongside other high-ranking Imperial military and regional governors to maintain order.
It makes the most sense, when you think about it: he can work behind the scenes to guide them and manipulate situations to best suit his needs. Like someone who can speak to the people on his behalf, someone who can play politics (but doesn’t outwit him), someone with charisma who can pacify the public, etc; It’s possible even other non-humans will be part of this council, if he deems them beneficial. (Which some of the more hard-lined, anti-alien council members wouldn’t like, for sure!)
All the while, he gets to operate in the background, where he works best. This makes him more a military dictator than an emperor, as he’s still the center of the council—he just doesn’t openly rule.
Would this be a fair system? Hell no, juntas are awful governments that oppress people and commit atrocities on the regular. Despite Thrawn’s best efforts to avoid this, he’s still cultivating an authoritarian regime that has shown in history to be built on sand and innocent blood. There’s going to be too many bad apples that he can’t—or feels he shouldn’t—cull from the system. They will do horrible things to people and some of those things he’ll allow as a lesser evil.
And there’s the fact he won’t live forever. He’s up there in age, and unless he’s okay with cloning—and we know trusting Imperials is not good—the paranoia is going to amp up. Who can he trust to keep up the system he’s so carefully crafted? Potentially none of the Imperial Shadow Council can be trusted outside of Captain Palleon, and maybe some of the humans he’s sent to the Ascendancy for aid. Somewhere down the line, someone will destroy what he built out of greed and egomania. And he knows this. Paranoia could be his ultimate downfall if he allows it.
This won’t happen, clearly, because the sequel trilogy (and the Legends Thrawn trilogy) indicates he won’t succeed. But I wanted to give you folks a more realistic vision of what the political makeup of galaxy would be like if he did. 🤔

tagging people i want to get to know better!! i can't do 9 because i just got tumblr and i don't have that many mutuals. ty @deathtovideodrome for tagging me :3
last song: The Answer Is Nowhere RE-AMP by Puppet & if found. puppet's electronic rock (and before that, weird robot EDM wanderlust) has been my personal soundtrack since early high school. something about the beeps and boops and mechanical distortion combined with his album art of robots, shipping containers, and bright orange, yellow, and blue really scratches an itch in my brain. deeply soothing to me.
currently watching: okay i was trying to get into The Witcher season 3 on netflix but i got tired of it. i really like joey batey and he's pretty much the only reason i ever watched it. i'm glad he's explicitly bisexual now but i think he should get with geralt.
currently reading: i need to read more but the book i started and want to keep going with is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. it's about trying to preserve culture and art in an empty world following a pandemic that kills almost everyone. the book came out a couple years before covid and got popular during the pandemic (who could have guessed?). seems sort of solarpunk, and i can't get enough of that.
current obsession: cyborgs, robots, cybernetics, machines. this happens to me a lot. this time it was because kay showed us a movie called gunhed that has a big robot. i've been trying to figure out how to become a robot and i think i need to make a bajillion dollars first so i'm cultivating a machine mindset.
tagging people i haven't seen this from yet @dorohedorah @ratswithouthonor @halomancer @transgirl-catra

Book Blurb: A vicious romance imbued with magic, thievery, and necromancy… When Tehlor Nilsen stumbles upon an abandoned corpse hidden in her friend’s empty house, she can’t ignore the energy lingering around the broken albeit familiar body. Entranced by the promise of ritualistic power, she seizes her chance to secure a vorðr. Miraculously, Hel the goddess of death, grants Tehlor an audience. But Lincoln Stone has no interest in becoming a magical sentry and raising him from the dead comes with violent consequences. When a mysterious neo-church arrives in Gideon, Tehlor catches wind of a rare relic. Despite Lincoln's troubling enthusiasm for demonology, she strikes a deal with her unruly vorðr, hoping to mend their strained relationship… Work together. Steal the Breath of Judas. Control the dead. As the magically bound pair infiltrate Haven and their heist becomes a hunt, Tehlor isn't sure if she's the predator or prey…
Review:
She's a witch who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and he's the dead demonologist she might have brought back to life, they're both messed up and they might be perfect for one another. This was a blood soaked, chaotic, heisty, and just all around fun time. Tehlor Nilson has always wanted power, she's greedy, and ambitious, and she also happens to be a witch. Tehlor's magic requires her to make sacrifices to the gods in exchange for power, and so when she stumbles upon the chance of some ritualistic power and to have her own vorðr (a guardian/protector... or rather someone who is enslaved to her), she takes it up... but that means pulling back the spirit of Lincoln Stone into the dead body that was sealed in his ex's house. Lincoln has no interest in being anyone's puppet, and he definitely has his own plans, but to his surprise he is suddenly brought back to life and bound to Tehlor. Lincoln and Tehlor are both vicious, bloody, people, yet there's no denying there's something between them. They could kill each other in a second yet they both agree to work together to steal the Breath of Judas, something powerful that would let them control the dead... but that means they'll have to infiltrate a church, or rather cult, and pretend to be a married couple, yet something much darker is going on here. Can they manage to work together without killing each other and without getting killed themselves (and finally address the palpable chemistry between them?). This was such a fun and wild ride. I loved Tehlor and Lincoln so much, they are both so morally grey and aren't afraid to go after what they want. They are twisted, violent, and obsessive, and I loved them both so much. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!! The romance definitely amped itself up in this one and I really enjoyed their dynamic so much.

Satan’s Silenced You. Here’s How to Stop Him.
Do not leave quietly. Those four words possess untold power.
First, they are a command to launch the life you were born to live. Second, they are a warning of the perils of remaining silent.
You are at a fork in the road. You must choose wisely. One road leads you to horrendous punishment. The other takes you to untold rewards. That is why leaving quietly is the worst thing you can do.
Mordecai sent a message to Esther that contained another four words that jump off the page:
“If you remain silent.”
We have heard so much about the danger of speaking out. We are buried under words of advice designed to compel us to mind our own business.
We know all about the dangers of speaking up, but rarely do we consider the cost of remaining silent.
“If you remain silent.” Mordecai is telling Esther that disaster is looming. She is a key to preventing the disaster. And finally, disaster will come to her if she remains silent.
That is what I am also telling you, dear reader. Disaster is imminent in our nation, and you are a key to averting that disaster.
Here is the entire message to Esther from Mordecai:
Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, liberation and rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish [since you did not help when you had the chance]. And who knows whether you have attained royalty for such a time as this [and for this very purpose]? (Esther 4:13-14 AMP)
Here are the specific words of Mordecai to Esther that are the heart of this message:
For if you remain silent at this time, liberation and rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish [since you did not help when you had the chance] (v. 14 AMP).

He is warning her about what will happen to her if she does not speak to the king. In essence, Mordecai is saying, “Here is what is going to happen if you leave quietly: the life you are trying to protect will be destroyed. The possessions you are hoarding will be taken from you. In short, what you fear the most will come upon you. And the only way to protect everything you love is by facing evil head on and not running from it.”
God is saying the same thing to an elite core of American Christians. Esther faced a menace, and now so do we!
What is happening in America is not a conspiracy theory. A puppet president’s cognitive decline is being censored from the news. Any story or event that proves that the Leftist-Socialist narrative is a lie is being silenced. When thousands take to the streets to protest tyranny, it is blacked out by the news media. When you speak anything that opposes this Socialist takeover, Facebook and YouTube will ban you. The FBI hunts down parents who speak out against the sexual perversion and racism being taught to their children in classrooms. Those who oppose the vaccination are being fired, shamed, and led away.
Your lukewarm Christian friends tell you that things are not that dire, insisting that “it is all in God’s hands.” They abuse truth by denying that God needs willing vessels to save people from evil. We the Church are His body. We are His hands and His weapon to destroy the works of the evil one.
Then we hear the tired excuse that, “We should be preaching the Gospel, not politics.” Almost always that excuse comes from pastors who have been preaching everything but the Gospel.
Suddenly, they are evangelists!
But the true evangelists are the first to call for action against political tyranny. They realize that if freedom dies, we will not be able to preach the Gospel. Andrew Wommack said, “First we must preach the Gospel. Then we must fight to preserve the right to preach the Gospel.” (Later in my book, Do Not Leave Quietly, I deal directly with the subject of politics in the pulpit.)
But Esther was in no condition to receive this message from Mordecai, because her life was still a fairy tale. And she was in denial. We know this because she was aware of the genocide that Haman planned against the Jews even before Mordecai told her.
Esther 4:4 says this, “When Esther’s maids and her eunuchs came and told her [what had happened], the queen was seized by great fear. She sent garments to clothe Mordecai so that he would remove his sackcloth, but he did not accept them” (AMP).
Mordecai is wailing in the streets dressed in sackcloth. But Esther is still in denial and sends nice, clean clothes to Mordecai. She thinks that by dressing him up, it changes the situation. Denial loves outward appearances. I call those clothes “glad rags.”
Esther is a wonderful person, but in her current condition she is a threat to her own people. So it is today that we have wonderful preachers with good hearts, but in their current state of denial they are a threat to both the Church and America.
They know what our government is doing to the Church. They know very well the agenda of tyranny that is unfolding in our nation. The lockdowns, masks, forced vaccinations, control of the media, and sponsorship of looters and rioters are all clear to them. But still they persist in preaching sermons that put glad rags on Christians.
Again, I am not talking about bad people. I am referring to good people who are in denial. Yet even a righteous preacher can be poisonous! Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied fountain and a polluted spring is a righteous man who yields and compromises his integrity before the wicked” (AMP).
It is not the first time in history that this has happened. Wanting to look good in the eyes of an evil culture has been the downfall of many preachers. Charles Spurgeon said, “It is a very ill omen to hear a wicked world clap its hands and shout, ‘Well done,’ to the Christian man.”
Other Christians think declarations of authority, entitlement, and victory exempt them from the war to free our nation. “We’ll sit back and just watch God work.” This too is denial.
They nurse a myth that Communism cannot happen here. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the famous Russian novelist, said, “There is always this fallacious belief it would not be the same here; here such things are impossible. Alas, all the evil of the twentieth century is possible everywhere on earth.”
Not only can Communism happen here, it is happening here.
And to deny it is madness.
But we also cling to the subtle and deceptive delusion that it cannot happen here because somehow American Christians are more valuable than Christians in the underground Church.
This tragic mutation of victory and blessing is rooted in defeatism. That is why they never take it to the streets. Much of the Church is like a platoon that has barricaded itself in the barracks and has never gone to war. Why? Because they secretly believe they cannot win. They can only carry on a continuous rehearsal for war.
Why will Esther’s punishment be so severe? The next phrase says it, “Since you did not help when you had the chance.”
Here is the truth! Of all the reasons God will punish the compromised Christians of America, this one stands out the most: “You did not help when you had the chance.”
The Church is crippled by two contradictory doctrines that frame America as either “not needing to be saved from tyranny” or that say, “America is too far gone to be saved.” Both extremes are the worst thing to say. They are the natural enemy of reformation and revival.
The Church in Germany, Russia, and China had one thing in common: they did not recognize the threat when they had the chance. They did not act while there was still time.
By the time you read this, the term cancel culture may be passé. I will use it anyway, because satan is using it, more than anything else, to destroy our freedom and our witness.
Do not be fooled by the fact that cancel culture seems currently to be more about books, words, and politics. Satan is doing something we see in old movie plots. The husband kills his wife, but also kills two other people chosen at random in order to make it look like there is a serial killer in the neighborhood.
If the Leftists were to openly cancel Christianity, it would be too controversial. So they cancel other things on their way to us. But make no mistake, we are the target, and we have always been the target.
When I wrote the book Vessels of Fire and Glory, it was to call a remnant out of the compromised Church. A key verse for the book was 2 Timothy 2:20-21:
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
It is a fact that many nations throughout history, when they faced a grave threat, built elite fighting forces. God does that too. Vessels of Fire and Glory summoned that elite force out of the great house, the Church, that Paul said had vessels of both honor and dishonor. The promise was that if anyone would separate themselves unto God, they would become vessels of honor, “prepared for every good work.”
My goal in that book was to explain that God was drawing a core group into special intimacy with Himself in a way that would unlock strategies to save our nation. They must become an entirely new weapon. But what is that weapon supposed to do, and how is it supposed to do it?
If that book called you out of something, then this is calling you into something—the fray!
It was not fair that Esther should have to face such a massive threat. And it is not fair for you, either. But there it is.
As Shakespeare said:
“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”

Antique Puppet aka "Creepy Doll"
Antique Puppet aka “Creepy Doll”
I bought this puppet for my daughter close to two decades ago.  It was an antique then, and hasn’t changed at all in the intervening years, because my daughter wanted nothing to do with her.  She ended up getting named “Creepy Doll”, and was put in storage.  (I actually hesitate to call her that, for fear she’ll put a curse on me.  I’m only half joking!)A few years ago when we had our bricks and…

Choose Your Astrologer Wisely
Wednesday - November 3, 2021
Tumblr media
Today I beg your indulgence as I address a topic that I think on an 11° Scorpio day is appropriate - choose your astrologer wisely. Just like in every profession, there are crackpots, loose cannons and just plain ole dumbasses in astrology. They read a few books, memorize the content, and then spew it back to you. This is not an astrologer, but rather a puppet. They have no idea how any of it works together. They can't explain to you "why" Aquarians tend to be contrary, or why Gemini's so talkative. Because there is a "why" behind every astrological principle. So what makes a good astrologer, in my humble opinion? Here's my short list: • Understand ASTRONOMY. If you don't understand the astronomical aspects of the heavens, you don't fully understand why planets are positioned in astrology as they are. • To be a good astrologer you have to understand philosophy, history, human psychology, current events, world religions, mathematics, geometry and the cyclical nature of life. • Can communicate outside of their Sun/Moon/Rising sign. The Leo who amps up their leo-ness to do a chart reading for a high degree Capricorn is wasting that Cap's time. • Admits failed predictions. If you follow any astrologer who regularly posts their predictions, but has no failed predictions listed, that is a RED FLAG. There are many reasons an astrologer will get a prediction wrong, and you deserve to know why. • Can go beyond their political opinion. I follow a number of astrologers whose political opinion is pretty obvious. Astrologers are going to have political opinions. But I only take seriously astrologers who EXPLAIN the political environment, and make it so I am not clear what their political leanings are. • Will go rogue. As we move closer to the Age of Aquarius, astrology is going to go thru some major shifts. Not because the skies are changing, but because our understanding is growing. Look for astrologers who present the data differently, take a different view, or who have developed their own systems. • And lastly, see their work as a serious way to help others. Astrology is not about "entertainment," and the industry has its share of mainstream horoscope purveyors. Astrologers are counselors and advisors, guides during difficult times. They show you the entirety of who you are so you can build up your attributes, and learn how to overcome your deficiencies. They see every one, every chart, as sacred and holy. They take seriously the counsel they give you. It isn't entertainment to them ... it's a calling. Choose wisely who gives you counsel and advice. Not every astrologer resonates with everyone, and that is the way it should be.

Top 5 (audiobooks) Tuesday
HELLO. This is like the best day/best topic for ME because I can just sit and yell at you about audiobooks. Because they’re amazing and I love them. And you should too! Obviously, you shouldn’t feel obligated to love them but if you think they’re not exactly equal to physical reading – I’m gonna have to stop you right there. How were stories passed down throughout generations before writing was…

The current bee in my bonnet is about getting smart regarding authoritarians and the things they do. It’s the compiling of a kind of checklist for watchdogs so that a couple dozen key corn kernels can be under surveillance and then be outed and suppressed or destroyed before the heat is such that whole damn jar of popped popcorn bursts into existence and cannot be mashed back into the jar. I hope we are not too late. I’m thinkin’ the vast majority of us do need a bit more study of the topic.
This article from The Irish Times (brought to my attention by a retired Army girlfriend of mine) is one of those that helps flesh-out some thinking about what goes on an authoritarian watchdog checklist. One beef I have with the author is his saying that Trump did this or Trump did that. Trump is mentally defective and lacks those capabilities in my never-humble opinion. Trump is just a puppet. It’s really what I call “The Apparatus” behind Trump telling him what to say, what to do. (And the book Dark Money shines a white-hot spotlight on that apparatus.)
A couple of lines of smart stuff from the article: “Power is proven, not when the sycophants have to obey reasonable commands, but when they have to follow and justify the craziest orders.” “The price of this form of power is the undermining of any form of democratic deliberation. Democracy is not just about voting – it is a system for the rational articulation of ideas about the public good. Trump set out to lay waste to that whole system, from the bottom up, poisoning the groundwaters of respect for evidence, argument and rationality that keeps it alive.”
BAM. “…ideas about the public good” is precisely the opposite of what authoritarians will allow.
And regarding the article’s very last sentence, no, it’s not only monster Trump who needs a stake through the heart, it’s that centuries old apparatus that needs the stake through the heart.

Might As Well Face It, You’re Addicted To Love: Chapter 4
Your fourth installment: We’re still winding up to the real main event, but dw, it’s coming very, very soon
AO3 link here
Chapters: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 [here] / 5 / ?
Robb
Private fencing on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Private contrabass on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Private lessons in the Old Language on Fridays. Private business and accounting lessons on the weekends. Private solitary study on days ending in y. Private dinners by himself taken in his room every night. Robbert Valerio lived a very private life that ticked along like clockwork.
It was enough to make him scream.
As his language instructor packed his things, Robb made himself a timetable. It was 5 now. The show was at 8, but he should get there early to make his plan more believable. That meant leaving by 6:30. He’d stay for the show then text James for a ride. If all went well, he’d be back in his bed by 11 and no one will have missed him.
He’d already changed out of his school uniform into khakis and a loose button up, so he was plenty casual for the show. He supposed he’d just spend the remaining time as if it were a typical afternoon. Robb made his way through the maze of his home, moving through corridors of polished black stone and white walls with gold-trimmed crown molding. Black doors with gold accents lead into the seemingly endless set of rooms and made the halls look even longer than they were. No matter how many guests were invited over for galas or visits the house was never truly full. There were always rooms left untouched, save for the staff who cleaned them needlessly.
Robb opened one of the doors and entered his musical study. Eric’s musical study was towards the center of the house where his mother could keep an eye on and listen to his brother’s playing. She always loved the violin. Robb’s musical study was in the far east wing of the house and well sound proofed. He’s pretty sure his mother didn’t even dislike the contrabass before he started playing it.
Inconvenient as it may have been, Robb actually didn’t mind not being directly under his mother’s eye. If she didn’t want to hear him play, then she wouldn’t much care about what exactly he was playing, now would she? His contrabass sat in its case in its designated corner where one of the staff brought it from the car, but Robb headed for the cushioned bench underneath the room’s window. Pulling the curtain shut, he lifted the seat of the built-in bench to a small pile of old beginner music books. Moving a few books aside, however, revealed a small tab that he pulled on to open a secret compartment in the bench. There he kept his electric bass.
Kept in the padded cloth case that came with it, Robb pulled it out and treated it with care. He’d gotten bored playing only classical music, and in his spare time had fallen down a rabbit hole of modern pieces written for classical instruments. It was only natural to find even more interesting pieces for an electric bass. Plucking at his contrabass’ strings was nice and all, but the more music he listened to the more he wanted badly to have a bass guitar of his own. So, naturally, he did what anyone would do and spent the next few weeks taking out small, unnoticeable amounts of cash until he had enough to go to the store and buy himself one. He got a real beauty, too, jet black with a glossy finish, a maple neck, and a rosewood fingerboard. He kept it well polished and cared for to a religious extent.
If his mother was disappointed in him for playing a contrabass, he can’t imagine she’d be any more enthused about an electric one. He could hear her now, sounding exactly like a character from a Disney Original, “Valerios don’t play rock and roll.” What his mother didn’t know couldn’t hurt him, though.
He was careful, always so careful. The door was always locked, the window’s curtain always drawn, the room was soundproof and he still played with headphones on. He kept his music sheets digitally on a tablet he bought off a kid at school that his mother didn’t know about nor track the use of. The only other person who even knew the bass guitar existed was James, who’d driven him to the store, and he doubted the man kept a small errand from five years ago in mind.
It was exhausting to always be so careful, but he’d been careless enough times in the past to know the price he’d pay. It was either carefulness or being nothing but a puppet with his mother pulling the strings. He didn’t think the world needed a second Eric.
Robb plugged the bass into one port on an amp and his headphones into another. It was a shame the amp wasn’t used properly, but it, along with the other miscellaneous musical equipment in this room, wouldn’t be seeing any action otherwise anyway. Some days he followed sheet music, some days he’d listen to songs or videos and try to recreate them by ear, some days he just messed around trying to recall music by memory or playing whatever came to mind. He felt aimless in his study of the instrument, but it was freeing to play just for the sake of playing. He didn’t play to be heard or judged or measure up to anyone or please anyone. He simply played what he wanted when he wanted how he wanted because he wanted, and it being good or bad had no repercussions either way.
Today he decided to play through a bit of sheet music he had. He played a lot of 80s and 90s rock, really pop rock. It was easy to find, and there were plenty of interesting pieces. He pulled out his tablet from a pocket of the bass’ case, set it on a music stand, and sat himself into the corner of the bench. He began to strum, and the world melted away for just a little while.
