One of our greatest joys at Movie Health Community is when we get to share good news about a movie being safe for photosensitive audiences. With that in mind, we have a proposal based on what we’ve already been doing for almost 8 years: Publicly-posted photosensitivity advisories on every film. Not just the ones that have objectively dangerous strobe effects, but also a prominent notice when a movie is safe to watch.

Admin Brandon put such an advisory at the beginning of his first original short film, Leech, and it felt like an actively positive step to take, an assurance for the audience that nobody would have their photosensitive health issues triggered while watching. Shown here is a screenshot of that advisory.

Let’s take a moment to recognize the safe movies. So far in 2023, the safest movies for photosensitive audiences have been:

'Where would the 2023 box office be without the bomb and the bombshell?

“Barbenheimer” may have started as a meme, but the two seemingly different blockbusters with twin release dates became the moviegoing phenomenon of the year. All that social media chatter translated into ticket sales (and then some), with the Warner Bros. comedy “Barbie” capping off 2023 as the highest-grossing movie ($1.44 billion) and Universal‘s historical biopic “Oppenheimer” as the third-biggest hit (a staggering $951 million).

Studios were (finally!) rewarded for bucking the overly familiar and embracing the new and novel. Remarkably, the top three movies of the year — Universal’s animated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ranks as No. 2 with $1.35 billion — were original properties. Sure, “Barbie” is based on the world-famous doll, Mario is arguably video games’ greatest mascot and J. Robert Oppenheimer is a real person who changed the course of history. So even if they weren’t whole-cloth creations, these movies weren’t sequels or part of pre-existing film franchises. And, on paper, none were foregone box office winners...

Highs: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion), “Oppenheimer” ($951 million), “Five Nights at Freddy’s” ($289 million), “M3GAN” ($180 million) Lows: “Fast X” ($704 million), “Book Club: The Next Chapter” ($29 million), “Renfield” ($26 million), “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” ($21.8 million) Grade: A Takeaways: What a year! Two of the 2023’s three biggest hits, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer,” belong to Universal. Meanwhile, “M3GAN,” a $12 million movie that made $180 million, as well as “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which converted its $20 million budget into $289 million globally, were two of the most profitable. What makes it more impressive is that Universal doesn’t have the deep library of IP that Warner Bros. or Disney commands. Instead, the studio assembled its killer lineup by leaning into everything from historical biopics to low-budget horror flicks and video game adaptations, most of them arriving without a Roman numeral in their title. Emily of New Moon Chapters 13 and 14

In which I have to catch up yet again 😂

Chapter 13

I remember how scared and then indignant I was the first time I read this chapter. Dod-gasted Lofty John indeed!

But very believable - when I was a child I had uncles and cousins who would have thought this a fine prank.

I love these little hints that Aunt Elizabeth may be starting to think of Emily as more than just 'a duty.'

'...Aunt Elizabeth went out very quickly - if it had been any one else it might have been said she ran.'

We end the scene with another dramatic death. I need to finally count these up:

Chapters wherein Emily imagines a death scene (her own or another's) as an act of vengeance like any proper 10 year old drama queen - 4/14

(While I'm at it) Chapters wherein some matter of Emily's looks and/or heritage is discussed - 10/14

Chapter 14

I adore these descriptions of autumn. They're so vivid! Even in the heat of summer, I can almost smell the fire and crisp breeze.

I also like that this is Cousin Jimmy's kingdom, to which he invites Emily (and friends, at times). His relations and friends don't understand him, but he has his glory moments to compensate ♥️

Teddy's whistle! That comes in very early as well, doesn't it? I'm having fun with this re-read seeing all the threads laid that reappear throughout the series.

It's also interesting that Teddy is the only other one that, like Emily (and Cousin Jimmy in his own way), has a touch of magic/fae/otherness about him.

Old Kelly! And Mike II, in honor of the first Mike whom Ellen never told us about. I wonder if Emily never responded to her letter that was all about her rheumatism?

Oh, Aunt Elizabeth! What do you have against cats?!

I do like this hint at her personality, though: 'Aunt Elizabeth could be a not ungenerous conquerer but she was very disagreeable in defeat.' A poor loser, but not a poor winner.

I do wonder what had her in such a bad mood?

I like that Barney is able to bring together the different aspects of himself now. He's a wild nature gnome at heart, but now with Valancy, a companion he loves and loves him, he can finally reconcile with his dad because he's secure in his relationship with her.
