What's your favorite game OST/song?

Ohhh man I have so many. If we’re talking while OSTs, then Shadow of the Colossus is probably my uncontested favorite. Chills and tears pricking my eyes every time I hear the opening choir lol. But also off the top of my head: Bloodborne, FFVII, River City Girls, Shadow Hearts, Silent Hill 1-3 (tho my username probably gives that one away lol), and Nier: Automata all rank really high.

For individual songs, Valse di Fantastica from FFXV is probably my hands down favorite with Resurrection from Shadow of the Colossus being a close second. But Exceeding Love from Suikoden III, Scars of Time from Chrono Cross, A Beautiful Song from Nier: Automata, Once, There Was an Explosion and BB’s Theme in Death Stranding, Dancer of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls III, The Demon World from Devil May Cry 3, Liberi Fatali from FFVIII, and Alice (Piano Arrangement) from Shadow Hearts II are all phenomenal, too.

I tend to prefer classical instruments — violin in particular — in game OSTs unless you break out a nasty synth lol. I’m also always a sucker for a choir. It’s not hard to guess what I’ll probably like tbh.

A love letter to long summer days... ClashMusic

It’s safe to say that most of us have remerged from the novel and misgiving times of the pandemic as changed people, with new hobbies, ideas, and appreciation for the joys of socialising. In Foals' case, they’ve done exactly that, demonstrated on their gracious new record ‘Life Is Yours’.

Following from their critically acclaimed two-part record ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost’ in 2019, Foals have remerged from the pandemic with a brand-new sound on ‘Life Is Yours’, a sound which can be described as a love letter written from the time of recording amid the pandemic, with best wishes to today. It’s a love letter to those glorious summer days with friends and sticky dancefloors that we all dearly missed during that terrible time and are now so grateful to have again.

Foals’ back-catalogue has an arsenal of different sounds, with the likes of catchy funk like ‘My Number’, the indie heartstoppers such as ‘Spanish Sahara’, and the heavier and more grittier takes such as ‘Black Bull’ and ‘Inhaler’. With Life is Yours, Foals have created an escapist summertime dancefloor sound. It’s undoubtedly the poppiest Foals album to date, filled with catchy hooks, choppy Chic-esque guitar grooves and Balearic beats.

As well as Foals taking a new sonic adventure, it’s subject matters also join in on this new optimistic sun-kissed sound. Whilst this is most definitely a pop album, frontman Yannis Philippakis doesn’t pair the pop sound with those party starting tropes of the modern pop song. He conjures evocative images of far-flung places, from the boreal coastal forests of the Pacific North-West (‘Life Is Yours’) to the beguiling beauty of the mountains perched upon the sea in St. Lucia (‘Crest Of The Wave’). Escapism can also be achieved via time rather than place, as shown by the sugar rush nostalgia of ‘2001’ or a rumination on the changing face of their hometown Oxford’s club scene on ‘Looking High’.

With both these lyrical and sonic accomplishments, Foals have created a fine record with a very solidified sound that will be the soundtrack for the summer. Some highlights include the possessing catchiness of ‘2am’, the dreamy nostalgia of ‘2001’ and the West African inspired groove ‘Flutter’. That being said, each track offers that escapist dancefloor groove capable of possessing the listener into a state of euphoria, it’s almost like a drug.

Since their 2008 debut record ‘Antidotes’, Foals have continued to build on their plethora of sounds and attract new audiences to their divine world and ‘Life Is Yours’ is no exception. When this album was recorded in Foals windowless studio amidst the pandemic, the songs were their windows to a world without restrictions and the bright euphoria of life that was back in full swing. Now we’re here, this record is purpose-built for our first full unrestricted summer and the summers beyond.

El concepto de cielo para cada persona es totalmente distinto. Por mi parte, el mío es una amplia pradera, no hay flores, pero sí montañas que se pueden ver a lo lejos, algunas cubiertas de nieve y otras con pasto del verde más brillante

Las nubes parecen pintadas por el artista más perfeccionista y talentoso que podría haber existido, hechas con tanto detalle y precisión que incluso no parecen reales. Jamás se nubla lo suficiente, y el clima es cálido, a veces es frío pero no lo suficiente para asociarlo al invierno.

Y finalmente, en el centro se encuentra un árbol, ni muy alto ni muy chico, con la sombra suficiente para poder recostarse debajo de él. Detrás de este, si se camina lo suficiente, comienzan a verse lagos, flores y arroyos. Todo lo que quieras está a tu alcance, sobre todo la paz tan anhelada.

Los atardeceres y amaneceres son un sueño, un paraíso visual y surreal, y como en la realidad, ninguno es igual a otro. Las noches están cubiertas de un océano de estrellas, y si se tiene suerte, es probable que pueda verse una aurora boreal.

Todo lo que sea que se escuche, se escucha a la lejanía, pero con potencia, como si estuviésemos obligados a jamás olvidar, o dejar pasar, el hecho de que hay algo sonando en el fondo.

Ooof... HI blog mutuals! How are you? 

Back around January 5th, I had a cloud of commitments drift over my calendar at work, and I thought: :This will be a busy week.: Two months later... well, it’s a break period soon, and I will probably sleep through half of it. 

I have been getting a few drabs of writing done, but it’s pretty fragmentary. I made progress on the mc:tna WIP! *jazz hands*

I also spent a lot of time the past month or so on the couch watching TV, because I didn’t have bandwidth for anything else. I want to do a quick impressions post, in case anyone is curious about these programs, too!

Below, thoughts on:

Alice in Borderland (Japan; Netflix)

His Dark Materials (British; HBO Max)

Raya and the Last Dragon (US; Disney+)

Vincenzo (Korea; Netflix)

WandaVision (US; Disney+)

Alice in Borderland (Netflix - 8 episodes, ends on a -minor- cliffhanger)

This one really grabbed me by the throat, but in a way that is entirely about style and setting. Characters in this drama don’t have a long shelf life, and like Battle Royale, it is extremely bloody. Also like Battle Royale, how much enjoyment you get out of it depends on your tolerance for watching people group up and then be shocked when the strangers they’ve decided to trust (inevitably) gruesomely betray them. If you enjoyed the style of Cube, Hunger Games, The Game, or Matrix Reloaded, and can stand (or like me, fast forward through) the gore, you might enjoy this.

Random impressions:

I know why Arisu is the main character, but brass tacks: if he didn’t have plot armor, he wouldn’t be. Usagi, Kuina, Karube, or Chishiya the entire way.

Almost the second I turned it off, a full-formed plot bunny of how Chishiya and Kuina met jumped in to my head, so maybe that will get written someday. Because they’re the best (regrettable murder-duo tendencies aside).

Either the borderland is a simulation, or they’re all stuck in someone’s psychotic break-- there’s too much that doesn’t add up for it to be anything else (although the “aliens!” theory is fun).

His Dark Materials (HBOMax - 2 seasons (15 eps), 3rd season in production)

I really wanted to like this more than I did... If you’ve read the books, and enjoyed them, it is a beautifully filmed version of that, but the show sells the grand drama of a War for Free Will much too short. Like, my favorite things in two seasons were Lee Scoresby (Lin Manuel Miranda, surprising the hell out of me), the City of Citagazze (what?), Mrs. Coulter (...what?!), and Lord Boreal. 

Lyra, Pan, Will, the Golden Compass itself, the angels, the Spectres, the Magisterium -- ehhhh. They were fine. But not more than that. And some of the things I outright loved in the books were terrible here. Whoever cast Lord Asriel, the witches and Jopari/John Perry did...not do their best work, imo. I’ll probably watch season 3, but it won’t be a “must watch” for me.

Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+ - animated film, ~2 hours)

I shelled out US $30 to see this opening weekend, and I’m not sorry about that choice. Reviewers are saying the story is a bit “generic” and...I guess? I think it depends on what you were expecting. But for me, this movie hit all my buttons - actual characterization for its female leads; humor; enemies to lovers friends; big epic conclusion to its story; found family; basically an RPG sourcebook lite approach to introducing the world; magic with consistent rules and NOT overpowered; BIG ol’ plothole at the end if someone wanted to write for it...

 There has been another criticism leveled, in that Raya tries to take a “pan SE Asia” approach with its setting that really, really bothers some viewers. I tried to keep an eye out for it when I watched, and quickly realized I don’t know enough about artistic influences from that area of the world to be able to tell. So it didn’t bother me, but in that I might be part of the problem. I will say that the setting seemed to be a little too “flavor-y” in its regions if it was supposed to be one country originally. But I mean, this was also a film with a giant rolling armadillo--  wasn’t thinking about it very hard.

Vincenzo (Netflix - airing now, new eps Sat & Sun in the US)

Ahaha, where to START?  I started watching this on a whim eating dinner one night, and it’s maybe my new favorite show. Netflix labels this a “dark comedy,” and yeah, I guess? I also sent my friend a text when I started binging this midweek that went, roughly:

“Ooh, now we’re staging an Italian mini-Epcot to stop the demolition gang, and GLITTER CANONS!! Also we’re ripping off The Great Gatsby.”

...and that’s the vibe, really. 

This is the rare drama where I feel confident saying: Watch the first episode. If you like it, you’ll like the rest (so far- ep. 6 just aired). I am a BIG fan.

WandaVision (Disney+ - 9 episodes)

Ohhhh, man. This was so much better than I expected, and the second trailer (above, if YouTube lets you see it where you are) gave me high hopes. It’s probably better if you have a vague idea who Wanda and Vision are, but you know I don’t know that you would really need that?

It’s about nostalgia, love, grief, and the stories we tell ourselves-- the ones that are self-serving, and the stories we think serve us, and don’t. It actually lets Wanda lead in her own narrative, for once, but doesn’t undercut what she’s had to go through to get there. Like a Korean drama, the first few episodes are going to seem underwhelming if you’re there for “big P” plot-- but give it room. 

Wanda facing down the beekeeper at the end of episode 2 gave me chills like very little has on TV for a while. Elizabeth Olsen packs a lot into that 2 seconds:

And Kathryn Hahn as Agnes is delightful. She’s totally on the up-and-up, of course-

Secondary shout-out to DR. Darcy Lewis, low-key saving the day and snarking her way through it. So happy to see her again, too.

I’ve watched the whole series now (last episode twice; cried both times) -- and I think this is going to be one of my favorite things of 2021.

8. favourite/least favourite change from the books?

Favourite: although I might not agree with every choice made in this regard (*ahem* see this 2000-word essay I wrote), I do appreciate the show’s decision to mine the emotional potential of HDM’s relationships in much greater depth than the books (particularly Lyra and Marisa, so far). In the trilogy, Marisa and Lyra never actually recognise each other as mother and daughter to each other, only in their heads and to other people, which felt like a missed opportunity, even as I was reading. I’m very happy to dig into those relationships more, even if it’s heartwrenching most of the time! Also softening Will, because book!Will tempered Lyra’s fire, I think, and Amir’s Will complements her better. 

Least favourite: any decision that I just can’t fathom the rationale behind nags at me (or when the rationale annoys me, lol). Changing the witch torture scene so that it’s Ruta rather than Serafina - why? Telling Asriel and Marisa’s story in a gentler way - why? Not mentioning that John Parry was dying of ‘other-world-disease’ - why? Having Lee be a pickpocket, when he is explicitly against stealing in the books - why? There are plenty of changes I understand, even if I prefer the book version - merging Billy and Tony Makarios’ characters, coming up with an explanation for Mrs Coulter’s ability to control the spectres, even the reduced presence of dæmons for budgetary reasons - but when it seems completely gratuitous? WHY. 

9. favourite casting choice?

Alice, why even bother asking this, lol. Ruth as Marisa, every day of the week. You can’t look away from her when she’s onscreen; she’s magnetic. Brilliant casting. 

10. which character do you think was portrayed best?

Mary, 100%. Completely true to the books, all the added scenes and details enhance what the trilogy tells us about her, and Simone is perfect. Honourable mentions go to Ariyon Bakare’s suave and slithery Boreal, and that little golden bastard. The CGI is phenomenal and I love that he’s both feral and completely desperate for love and affection in equal measure. 

11. favourite dæmon?

Stelmaria! She’s so elegant and beautiful and commanding, a perfect complement to Asriel. This is a book reference, but that moment when Lyra is telling an obvious lie and Asriel is trying to stay stone-faced but Stelmaria laughs? So sweet, I love it.

Whats Your favorite character design? Could be from a game you played or haven't played.

If you mean generally, I like more clean designs with like… either one big focal point or increasing amounts of intricate details that are cohesive. To name a few: Alice Elliot from Shadow Hearts, Ezio in Assassin’s Creed II, most iterations of Lara Croft, Pyramid Head and the Bobblehead Nurses, DMC4 Nero, Heather Mason, Genichiro Ashina, Mercy and Hanzo in Overwatch, Okatsu in Nioh, OG FFVII Aerith, Genesis and Sephiroth in Crisis Core, the FFXV guys + Lunafreya, the vast majority of characters Kojima has designed, all the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus + most Soulsborne bosses (Dancer of the Boreal Valley is a standout fave).

I don’t really have a single favorite character design I can point you to because it’s situational tbh lol — I really like a character to look like they belong in the universe they exist in and fit their role in that universe. Like… if you dumped your average Final Fantasy character into The Last of Us or vice versa I’d find it extremely offputting. I personally can’t vibe with white haired battle bots wearing lolita/ouji fashion and lingerie for uniforms if it’s solely for fan service. That kind of thing.

You could also show me a character design I absolutely love depicted in an art style that I really hate and that would be a total turn off as well lol — but that’s more of an animation thing way more than video games.

Kingdom Hearts Disney Character Daemons

I’ve finally done it, and made a list of all 59 human Disney character’s Daemons that appear in Kingdom Hearts.

I’ve listed them in Game Order and then World Order, with Worlds appearing in subsequent games only listed in the first game they debuted in including all characters, even if they themselves didn’t appear in that game (eg. Olympus is only listed in KH1, but includes Meg). I’ve added notes as well for a ‘quick analysis or things I’ve found out while researching the animals, names or characters.

Since it’s a monster of a list, I’ve saved everyone some Dash space and listed everything under the cut.

Kingdom Hearts

Wonderland

Alice: Unsettled, usually in the form of a cat. Jacob (Dinah)

Queen of Hearts: Anna’s Hummingbird. Basil

Notes: I wasn’t sure if I was going to include the Queen or not- but I decided to, since there isn’t anything that says she’s not human. I chose a hummingbird for her for her frequent mood swings due to the fact that (male) hummingbirds can get very aggressive.

Olympus Coliseum

Hercules: Pegasus (he’s half mortal so, they’d be extraordinary)

Megera: Ferret. Creon

Notes: I’ve found myself with a stereotype that if I can’t find a particular animal for a Daemon, I simply make them a mustalidae, but I think it works with Megera as she gives off a fem-fetale confidence.

Deep Jungle

Tarzan: African Fish Eagle. Juana

Jane: Jewel Beetle (Chrysochroa fulgidissima). Iain

Clayton: Sabor

Notes: These were some of the hardest Daemons I’ve had to place, since I could not think of what to give them (apart from Clayton). But looking closer at Tarzan and Jane’s personalities, I chose what I feel are fitting Daemons, with the Eagle being a symbol of bravery, and the Beetle being a symbol for intellect and quirkiness.

Agrabah

Aladin: Sadaf (Abu)

Jasmine: Arabian Mau. Dara

Jafar: Jacqueline (Iago)

Notes: I did almost give Jasmine Rajah for her Daemon, but wanted something smaller and less imposing, but equally as outgoing, so I decided to keep in the Feline family. Also, TIL; Iago is Welsh for Jack.

Monstro

Gepetto: Fidela (Figaro)

Notes: I do want to say that I think that once Pinocchio becomes human he would get a Daemon, and that Daemon would be Jimminy, granted by the Blue Fairy. But considering Jimminy’s role in the KH franchise, I thought it would be weird for him to be traveling with Sora + co.

Neverland

Wendy: Unsettled, Mostly takes the form of a Bluebird. Geoffrey

Peter: Unsettled, usually the form of a Cuckoo. Ceil

Slightly: Unsettled, usually in the form of a Vixen. Jackie

Cubby:  Unsettled, usually in the form of a Black bear cub. Thea

Hook: Slender Mongoose. Adelaide

Mr. Smee: Mallard duck. Deryn

Notes: Smee’s Daemon was going to be a Schipperke (a small black dog) until I looked up Smee’s name and found it was a common old name to call Waterfowl (mainly ducks and Smews), and his personality fit!

Ling: Japanese Macaque. Binh

Notes: I based Ling, Yao and Chien Po on the three wise monkeys in terms of Daemon themes. The White-Cheeked Macaque isn’t the best choice, however, since it was only recently discovered..

Beast’s Castle

Belle: Eurasian Jay. Clarus

‘Beast’: Wild European Sow (Boar). Addison

Notes: I wasn’t going to give Beast a Daemon at first- she’d only appear in his human form at the end credits scene anyway, but I chose to give him one of his design inspirations, since the personality matched.

Port Royal

Capt. Jack Sparrow: Sparrow Hawk. Wyleye

William Turner Jr: Arctic Tern. Vilma

Elizabeth Swann: Barnacle Goose. Aaron

Capt. Hector Barbosa: Great Skua. Rossa

Notes: Yes, they’re all birds because all of their names (apart from Barbossa) were names of birds. I changed Jack’s from just ‘Sparrow’ to ‘Sparrowhawk’ since I think that suited him more. Also, Skuas may look like a drab seagull, but they are mean little things that rob other birds for food and eat chicks!

Enchanted Dominion

Aurora: Boreal Owl. Garrik

Maleficent: Diablo

Flora: European Robin. Zephyr

Fauna: Dunnock. Silvius

Merryweather: Great tit. Onofrio

Notes: I’ve already talked about the Fairies before and haven’t changed their Daemons. Aurora is an owl because owls are stereotyped into two things: being knowledgeable, and being tired all the time. Disney themselves play to this trope a lot too.

Castle of Dreams

Cinderella: Jaq

Lady Tremaine: Lucifer

Anastasia Tremaine: Lion Tamarin. Bion

Drizella Tremaine: Peacock Pheasant. Felix

Notes: I chose the sister’s Daemons for specific reasons. They’re both prideful in their looks, singing voice and being ‘better than’ Cinderella. the two most common animals that symbolize pride is the lion and the peacock. giving these animals as Daemons to the sisters gives them a falseness about them. They may see themselves as all these good things, but in reality- they’re nothing but a sham.

Dwarf Woodland

The Queen/Witch Hag: Panther(leopard)/Rook. Gunnar

Snowwhite: Bluetit. Vardan

Notes: When matching Daemons to characters, I like to do research on those characters, and as it turns out- the Queen was going to be given a black panther as an animal companion in early drafts of Snow White. This was changed to a crow that lives in her potions’ lair later on. I gave her two forms, because I could foresee her using magic on her Daemon to make the disguise more complete.

Notes: I don’t have much to say here other than Pheobus’ Daemon was chosen based on his name alone, since they are small birds with a very bright crest that looks like sunshine when it catches the light.

Notes: I did this very late on and very quickly due to me forgetting that Sam and Kevin are humans in this world! even at a quick look, I think I got them right.

Mother Gothel: Orchid Mantis. Chrysanthos

Notes: I only really had trouble with Flynn’s Daemon, but landed on a magpie because they both like shiny things- like enormous piles of money.

Arendelle

Elsa: Ermine. Vetle

Anna: Mountain Hare. Kai

Kristoff: Svalbard Reindeer. Bae

Hans: European Wolf. Gerda

Notes: I based Elsa’s Daemon from the early concept of Frozen, where she was going to be an evil queen with a coat of living Ermine. Other than hers, all other Daemons are based on the original Book’s characters, with Hans’ Daemon being named after the main character, which further amplifies the end twist.

San Fransokyo

Hiro: Japanese Beetle. Kei

Gogo: Hedgehog. Hwan

Honey Lemon: Bumble-Bee. Benigno

Fred: Iguana. Pamela

Wasabi: Mediterranean Mantis. Ginger

Notes: I originally had them all as Insects, but I have forgotten what other insects I had for Go-go and Fred, but I still feel I gave them the right choice.
