...
HELP BOROMIR DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. I'M SO GLAD I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME
CUSS YEAH I DO look I used to be so neutral on Boromir and then like. Two years ago when my family was rewatching the trilogy over New Years (like we always do cause we're iconic like that) I went INSANE OKAY
HE JUST WANTS TO HELP HIS PEOPLE OKAY and the way the movies portray his dynamic with Aragorn is actually so so good? I went on this super long rant toward my friend @heckin-music-dork about it at the time lol but the gist of it is: he starts out so antagonistic toward Aragorn but then he does start to respect him as a warrior and a friend and fights by his side and there are times in Moria where you can almost see him taking cues from Aragorn, waiting to see what he's gonna do next and then he nerds out about Gondor to Aragorn in Lothlorien and just. It's a whole long rant but I'm obsessed with him now and I really, really wish he hadn't died

the advice of hobbits
pairing: boromir / reader
word count: 728
summary: boromir is educated on the hobbit language of flowers, but is woefully uninformed about how your body reacts to said flowers
a/n: my april piece for the year of themed creation! maybe i’ll catch up eventually? who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️ tagging @oonajaeadira & @yearofcreation2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“oi merry! boromir has a cruuuuuush!” “who do ya think he fancies, pip?” “do i even have to say?” “no, i don’t think you d-AAAH!”
boromir interrupts the gossiping hobbits with a (mostly) playful tackle, clotheslining them both with one arm each
he knows they’re both young, pippin not even of majority by hobbit standards, but it’s moments like these that have him wanting to wring their necks like freshly washed laundry
the topic was changed once merry and pippin were freed from boromir’s wrath, but the young hobbits were far from deterred
for days after, they continued to pester their friend about you, from teasing comments about the puppy eyes boromir gave you to preposterous claims that your eyes mirrored his
the risk of you overhearing their silly banter was far too taxing on his nerves. he’s a warrior who has seen the darkest things humanity has to offer & faced them all with limitless courage, but that courage disappears when he thinks about you learning of his harbored affection
he didn’t believe he could survive the heartbreak that would come with your inevitable refusal of a courtship offer, so he chose instead to brood about it
“i still think you should tell ‘em,” pippin remarked out of the blue one day, catching him off guard. boromir couldn’t play dumb enough to avoid thinking of what you would say and he hated how your rejection circulated in his ears
“even if i wanted to, which i don’t, i do not believe a proposition in the ways of our people would end well.” the young hobbits knew this was code for “you deserve much better and i’m too much of a chicken to offer it to you” but wisely didn’t call him on it
“then do it the hobbit way, with flowers!” “why didn’t we think of that before? absolutely genius!”
the next half hour was spent educating the captain about the hobbit language of flowers: which ones were useful in romance, which ones he’d be wise to avoid, and how to arrange the good flowers properly to convey the right meaning
once the right flowers were retrieved, it was time to teach the skill of crown weaving. in one word, that whole ordeal could be described as dismal
it took dozens and dozens of flowers and endless patience for there to be a decent flower crown, but it finally happened
boromir was losing his nerve as time went on, you making a very clear effort to avoid him that slowly broke him down
even the younger hobbits were concerned at this strange development. you didn’t start avoiding boromir until he started using the flowers, but they were positive that you shared the same feelings as the gondorian. what gives?
it got to the point where boromir was starting to toss pieces of his hard work along their walks in hurt frustration. the boys wouldn’t let their friend give up on love so easily, so they collected each of the discarded pieces and saved them
they confront you on your avoidance of boromir in the most inconvenient way possible (because that’s how these two operate) by approaching you with some of boromir’s arrangements
you had no warning when the two hobbits plopped a massive pile of flowers in your lap, the residual pollen invading your nose in the most uncomfortable fashion
sneeze after sneeze wracked your body (even legolas looked concerned at the spectacle from across the fire) until you were saved from the flowery pile by boromir, who looked pissed as he discarded the blossoms yet again
your body was too busy rejecting the pollen that you didn’t notice the harsh looks merry and pip both were wearing before the took’s eyes betrayed the appearance of an enlightenment
“merry, they’re averse! they don’t hate boromir after all, it’s just the flowers!” this certainly caught merry’s attention and led to an enlightenment of his own.
“the flowers held no hobbity weight at all when they just made them sick! oh this is a great development!” “now they can confess their love for each other without fear of an attack!”
if looks could kill, pippin would be dead several times over (but he paid no heed to this of course, that’s just his nature)
boromir, now more than ever, wonders why he took the advice of these two silly hobbits

No because I love Boromir so much but my dad doesn’t and whenever he asks me why, all the valid reasons flash through my head like he’s noble, he cares so deeply about his people, his love for his brother and how he stood up for him, his whole relationship with the hobbits, and his sacrifice, but then my brain goes to static and all I can say is erm hes pretty cool

I just have to rant about Boromir again.
In FOTR (movie), he is *so compassionate* and considerate! It makes me feral.
When Gimli kneels in front of Balin's grave and cries, it's * Boromir* who walks up to him and touches his shoulder to comfort him
Jumps with Merry and Pippin over the gap of the staircase
When Frodo sees Gandalf fall, it's Boromir who holds him back from doing anything stupid and running towards danger
Again, outside of Moria, it's Boromir who stops an infuriated Gimli from running back into the mine and prevents him from doing something stupid.
Also, when Aragorn tells them to get up and move on, Boromir wants them to have a moment to grieve
In Lothlorien, when Haldir stops the company, Boromir is the only one consoling Frodo and tells him not to give up hope after Gandalf's death which is actually quite insane because
Later on we learn that Boromir himself has given up hope (for Gondor) when he talks to Aragorn about what Galadriel has told him
So there we have a stout warrior who takes care of others, encourages them, comforts them, despite his own darkness and doubts.
Ergo = my poor little heart.
I wish Boromir would have lived to see Gondor at peace and experience a different life than war, alas 💔

Warnings: not self-harm scars, but there are mentions of war/battle and violence, talks of being a prisoner of war
ᴹᵃˢᵗᵉʳˡᶤˢᵗ
Legolas’ is here.
𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: You’ve been in many battles, fights and wars. And your s/o is seeing your scars for the first time.
𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐧
・It was late evening, both of you had had your supper, but even after you had finished eating, you were still sitting at the oak table
・Unwinding, you were both relaxing after a big day
・Aragorn was smoking pipeweed, and you were happy with your wine
・The snow was falling outside and you were both rugged up
・The conversation from the day had found its way into your chambers
・Although there was no threat of war, it was still spoken about since Aragorn was the ruler
・He was no stranger to seeing the horrors of war, it was drastically different when he saw the effects of it on your body
・He was devastated.
・His gruff voice asked about what you had been through
・Aragorn filling both your cups in celebration of surviving
・Though neither of you were drunk, the affect of the drink was starting to make you both loosen up
“Do you regret them?” Aragorn said suddenly, breaking the impregnated silence
“I don’t.” You said after a while, insinuating that you didn’t see your scars as a negative thing
It was quiet for a while. But not the type of silence that was awkward. Nothing with Aragorn felt awkward, nothing.
After taking another sip from your cup, you asked him the same, “Do you?”
“For some...I do.”
・He said it without looking in your eyes
・And he took a long puff of his pipe. After blowing the smoke from his mouth, he reached across the table and took ahold of your hand
“I just want you to know. I love you.”
𝐄𝐨𝐰𝐲𝐧
・She hadn’t been in many battles herself, so seeing your scars took her breath away
・Many long slices that had healed badly, some healed well
・All depending on how many healers had been there during the fights
・Eowyn’s long hair travelled down her back in a braid that you had done earlier
・Making it so her hair didn’t fall in her face as she trained
“That looks like it hurt,” she said absentmindedly, reaching out to stroke the reddish coloured scar.
Without meaning to, you laughed and nodded enthusiastically. “It bloody did.”
・Her heart broke for you
・But she laughed lightly at your response
・You were both standing, staring out the window which overlooked the village below
・Her hand snaked down to yours and squeezed
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, entwining her fingers, still looking out the window
“Thank you, but I did what I had to do. And this is what came of it.”
・She turned to you then, and leant her forehead against yours
“I won’t let you get hurt again.”
    “And I you.”
𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫
・Sighed when he saw them, hanging his head in defeat. “I wish you never had to go through that.”
You smiled at him, “No other choice, my lord.”
・Although you meant the name as a joke, a teasing nickname, he took it in a different way -
・Like he could have somehow stopped this from happening. That he had the power to stop it.
・He was very upset
・And went to sit by himself for a bit
・You didn’t go after him; sometimes people just need time to process their feelings. In other words - to feel their emotions...and work through them
・When he came back, Boromir got on both of his knees and held your hand against his face.
・Shocked, you let him lead the situation
“Y/n, forgive me. Please forgive me.”
・Your shock didn’t waver, it didn’t falter - only grew
“Boromir, why would you ask for my forgiveness?” You knelt as well, so you were on the same level.
“Because your family has lived in my kingdom for so long. Every decision my forefathers have made led you to endure this. They are to blame, and therefore, I am to blame.”
・Tears welled in both of your eyes and he stroked his thumb against your cheek
“I will not forgive you. Because there is no need for you to apologise. I know you will be a just ruler, but I will not have you apologise for my decisions.”
・Kneeling, he took you in his arms and hugged you fiercely. His hand firmly holding your head to his chest.
𝐀𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐧
・Her gentle voice soothes you, it was the end of another battle and she was healing your wounds
・As your partner, she tended to you without breaks. You had your own rooms that she took you to, getting help from the other’s to move you to the bed
・She was with you day and night
・So she saw your scars when you were unconscious and her heart broke from what she saw
・Arwen never wanted you to go through the hateful thing that was war. And seeing the results of that on your skin made her want to kill every person who did that to you
・When you finally awoke, she was asleep next to you
・But the moment you stirred, she jumped up and hurried to your side
“My love, how do you feel?”
“...sore,” you said in a croaky mumble
・She smiled, going to get you some salve and drink that would mull the pain
・When you realised you were topless, you deflated
・And when she came back, you stared at her, trying to see if anything had changed in her since seeing your scars
・When you were about to talk, she beat you to it
“Yes, I’ve seen them. And I’m sorry you went through that.”
・You were glad she spoke, because you still didn’t have the strength to explain
・It was like Arwen could sense it; or maybe she just understood beings better than most. Because she didn’t push for it, she didn’t ask you too many questions.
“I can do my best to fade them as well, if you wish.”
・It took you a while to decide, but at the end of it. You decided against it.
   “They’re apart of my story.”
・And again, she understood.
𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐫 (this is where talks of being a prisoner of war is)
・You were both up late talking about life and the conversation went to war and what you had both experienced
・A deep conversation that you both didn’t intend on having
・It was late night, with the stars above you, a fire in front of you and two pales of ale next to you
・Faramir didn’t mean for the conversation to go to a darker place
・But you were in the beginnings of your courtship and you wanted to learn more about each other
・It wasn’t until you took off your large jacket and left on your undershirt that he noticed the raised slices on your skin
・He took a sharp intake of breath, seeing your arms alone...it broke his heart to see just how hard you had fought for what you believe in
・Faramir didn’t know how to bring it up, but you knew what he was talking about
・You had been a prisoner of war, and had been tortured for information...but still held strong. They got nothing out of you but a bunch of spitting and swears
・It was Aragorn who had found you, and both you and Faramir were eternally grateful
・But Faramir hadn’t seen how bad the orcs had hurt you
・Their brutality was obvious and it took everything in Faramir not to scream out in agony and hatred
・You, who he loved so much. Who made him feel whole, who made him feel like the world made sense, who gave him a purpose - a will to live
・The fact that someone had hurt you so badly... he wished he could return the favour a hundred times over

I loved that Bilbo, before Frodo even did this, offered to take the One Ring to Mordor, so Boromir is about to laugh like "who is this jokester? I didn't know there was a jester here" and then he stops because They ALL know that Bilbo is serious (although he uses a playful tone). And the Glóin looks like, "Yes. You courageous and audacious Hobbit, you're all I've remember of you."
‘Very well, very well, Master Elrond!’ said Bilbo suddenly. ‘Say no more! It is plain enough what you are pointing at. Bilbo the silly hobbit started this affair, and Bilbo had better finish it, or himself. I was very comfortable here, and getting on with my book. If you want to know, I am just writing an ending for it. I had thought of putting: and he lived happily ever afterwards to the end of his days. It is a good ending, and none the worse for having been used before. Now I shall have to alter that: it does not look like coming true; and anyway there will evidently have to be several more chapters, if I live to write them. It is a frightful nuisance. When ought I to start?’ Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Glóin smiled, but his smile came from old memories.
So Gandalf has to stop Bilbo, because he could no longer take the Ring. And to me that sounded more like: no, you're already too much of a protagonist, let other characters have a chance.
Hey, I swear Bilbo Baggins' name is repeated more times in the LotR books than the names of some members of the Fellowship. hahahahah Bilbo is a great protagonist for The Hobbit and a very charismatic supporting character in LotR.

My Roman Empire is Sean Bean's multifaceted portrayal of movie Boromir yet the general public still sometimes only see him as this one-sided, one-dimensional character whose main arc is about falling into temptation and then having his redemption. I know it was mentioned before, but Sean's sensitive portrayal literally breaks my heart, and his role as being an emotional pillar/strength for the Fellowship is often so overlooked.
I know book readers don't fall pray to that, but people who are only familiar with movies don't see it and it's FRUSTRATING THE MAN IS LITERALLY SO CARING AND HIS HEART IS SO, SO FULL OF LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM LIKE HELLO ???

return of the king is on and i have to look away every time denethor is onscreen. they did him so badly. it hurts. i like the movies a lot but my god peter jackson couldnt do layered characters. i understand they were strapped for time and had to make a plot with only a fraction of the space the books had, but it would have been so much more impactful to keep denethor as a noble, beautiful, brilliant, and lordly character forced into a terrible situation with no good choices rather than reduce him to a mean dad is mean its good we're killing him to make way for aragorn lookit how nasty he is guy.
not only does it cheapen and simplify the story, but it also destroys boromir and faramirs characters and motivations! to make faramir the abused wet-dog of a good-boy misunderstood son, and boromir the wrongly-devoted misplaced-passion fathers-son... it cheapens them! faramir is full of noble talk but he has his flaws, and boromir was devoted to his father and his city for good reasons. denethor was a good ruler! denethor was proud and beautiful and noble! but in turning denethor into a pathetic grimy man with favoritism turns faramir into an underdog martyr and boromir into almost a villain. (imo it also cheapens the impactfulness of pippin as a guard and of aragorn taking the kingship but i digress)
i like the movies. i understand why things were skipped, shortened, and cut. i understand why characters were changed! but this is smthn so lazy that just enrages me.
