🚨🚨🚨 The Telegraph newspaper review. It's behind a paywall so I've copied and pasted it - contains Spoilers 🚨🚨🚨
Eleanor Tomlinson and Alfred Enoch star in this sexy thriller set in an alternate-reality Yorkshire that looks more like LA than Leeds.
The Couple Next Door (Channel 4) is a sexy thriller and, if we’re honest, this isn’t Britain’s forte. Put it this way: a pivotal scene in which our two main characters lock eyes in a moment of simmering lust occurs while they’re putting the bins out.
In an attempt to be less British – and this is a co-production with US network Starz, so it needs to be – the six-part, boxsetted drama has been given a glossy, international look. Hilariously, it claims to be set in Leeds, and you will believe that if you’ve never been to Leeds and are prepared to accept that it looks like LA’s San Fernando Valley, where the weather is great all the time (apart from the scene with the bins. Because rain is sexy).
It’s enjoyable nonsense. Evie and Pete, played by Eleanor Tomlinson and Alfred Enoch, are a young couple who move into a new home in Truman Show suburbia and are immediately love-bombed by Becka (Jessica De Gouw), a hot yoga instructor who lives across the road with Danny, an equally hot traffic cop who rides a motorbike (because motorbikes are sexy). Danny wears tight, white T-shirts that show off his He-Man physique – he’s played by Outlander’s Sam Heughan – and Becka just wears her underwear when guests pop round.
To be fair, the guests probably expect that sort of get-up, because Danny and Becka are swingers. Not that The Couple Next Door uses the term, because it’s striving to be far classier than that. Becka and Danny have the hots for Evie, and she – despite suffering a horrendous tragedy and being raised in a Christian cult based in what looks like the village from Emmerdale – is soon turned on to the whole wife-swapping idea.
Pete, who is fatally nice, is less enthusiastic (Enoch is the only actor here who makes his character behave like a normal person). While all this is going on, a creepy neighbour played by Hugh Dennis is stalking Becka, and Danny starts moonlighting for a local criminal kingpin. The drama ramps up. Evie, who appears at the outset to be a sensible, sweet-natured type, goes fully bonkers by around episode four.
Every five minutes there’s a complete failure of logic, either in terms of plot or production. Why would a crime boss trying to transport goods under the radar send them out in a car flanked by two police outriders? Why does the show go to the trouble of filming its countryside scenes in Yorkshire but not bother to disguise the architecture in any of the urban shots (it’s Belgium, apparently)? I found the whole thing ridiculous. So ridiculous that I happily binged the lot in two days.

La La Land (2016)
Smoking: Horus
So, this week is going to be different on Reefer Reels N Reviews. I haven’t actually seen this movie. I have been wanting to, barely know anything about what it is other than Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are in it. So let’s see how this review goes today!
Opening to people in traffic, everyone listening to different music. And breaking into our musical right away. People getting out of cars to sing and dance. And of course, there is that one van randomly full of musicians in the back just ready to play. Lol. Then we have a guy parkouring across all the cars. When you look at what they pan out to for the highway it totally doesn’t seem like there should be that traffic on that overpass. Very misplaced.
Tumblr media
Why is Emma Stone missing a headrest?? So, she is a struggling actress with big dream. Has 4 roommates who are encouraging and seem like they are all best friends. We shall see if that lasts. They all go to this party together in one car, and then after the number Emma is going back to her car, but it ends up being towed. Why is she walking home alone? Did all of her roommates hook up with someone? How depressing.
I was just looking through iMDB at the cast list. I know like 2 other people that are in this...
Now to switch to Ryan and see what he did with that day. Enter the other person I know in this film. J.K. Simmons. Looks like he is Ryan’s boss. He plays the piano at a restaurant. I never knew that he played the piano. Mainly because I’m too busy admiring his body, or thinking about it if I’m being honest lolol.
I just thought about it and this is, at least that I know of, the second movie that Gosling and Stone have been in together. There were in Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore. Oh, I LOOOOOVE Julianne! I need to watch 13 Ghosts next I think 😊
Back to the movie. Ryan just got fired and Emma is just staring at him. And their first real encounter is not great. Like at all.
Time for another party. At least this one is playing the type of music I like lol. The dancing she is doing is like terrible. But I guess that was the point lol. Hehehe, Ryan just told Emma, “Guess I’ll see you in the movies.” I know it is just for the movie, but it’s ironic. OMG! Ryan just told her to put the car key to her chin to make you’re a head an antenna. MY DAD TOLD ME ABOUT THAT. I’ve NEVER heard that from anyone buy him before! Sorry. Got a little to excited about something dumb. Lol
Tumblr media
I’m only 30mins in and already almost 500 words. This will be a long one. I’m sure I’ll delete some stuff during the editing process. Like probably this. How funny would it be if it stays 😂
Well time for the first pause. I just munched on some backed flaming hot Cheetos with limon and now I need some more water. Still have an hour and 20mins left in the movie. And got more snacks lol.
Maybe I shouldn’t have eaten before this part. They are in the planetarium and they just start floating and now they are in the clouds and dancing like in the Milky Way. Talk about trippy…
Tumblr media
I do thing that Emma and Ryan always make a cute couple. Jealous of course because he is one hunk of a man. But I mean. I understand lolol.
And here is the other person I recognize, John Legend! He’s wonderful and he is so lucky to have the ever-beautiful Chrissy Tegan as his wife. The music in this movie is beautiful.
So as I’m coming to the end of the movie I’ll sum up some of what I’m thinking since I haven’t seen it before so I had to focus a little more. Have to say, this wasn’t my favorite process so doing these will be rare.
And a 3rd I didn't see on the list, because it has soooo many people in it, is Tom Everett Scott. I loooove him as Guy Patterson in That Thing You Do! Great movie with Tom Hanks if you've never seen it.
This movie is about two dreamers who want different, yet similar things. They are both artists and they meet and fall in love. They help each other grow and realize their dreams. Sure it’s a great premise for a movie. But not one of my favorites.
Tumblr media
So, I don’t know the next time I’ll watch it, if ever. Not that I don’t think they did a good job, because it is a good movie. But it was all a little predictable. Most movies are, but I mean from the opening dance number I was expecting all of what happened.
That’s for this session of Reefers-Reels-N-Reviews.
Till next time <3

Watch Out for These 10 New Age Careers
Tumblr media
Our lives have evolved to great lengths in the past decade. The advent of technology has brought about many changes in our daily lifestyle and our mindset. It has opened the doors and windows of opportunities and new ideas and has enabled us to think beyond the conventional career paths and consider the new age careers of today, for a living.
There was a time when there existed “unconventional careers” that parents disapproved of. When Farhan from the movie 3 Idiots was afraid that his father would not let him quit engineering to become a photographer, we felt that.  The “abba nahi manenge” dialogue from the same movie was so relatable.
Most children used to be given an option to become a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, a teacher, or apply for a government job, a decade from today.
Technology has proved that unconventional ideas or new age careers can also build you a happy and satisfying life.
That said, here are the 10 new age careers to watch out for, with 2 careers that will blow your mind! Read on till the end to unravel the most highly unlikely careers of this generation.
10 New Age Careers to Watch Out for!
1. Data Scientist
A data scientist curates large amounts of unstructured data by using diverse programming languages, mathematics, and statistics. Companies hire data scientists to mine, present, and clean data, as well as source, manage and analyze the unregulated data for insights, patterns, and trends that can be of use for businesses and other organizations.
2. UI/UX Designer
In the times when applications and websites play a big role in the digital marketing and business world, UI/UX designing is one of the most well-paid, new age careers of today.
A UI/UX designer creates the interface for the best user experience for a mobile application or a website.
Apart from graphic designing and knowledge of designing software, the basic skills needed to ace this profession are to have curiosity, empathy, and understanding of human behaviour and be adept at visual communication.
3. Digital Marketing Specialists

SEO, blogging, content marketing, etc are all components of a digital marketing campaign, used frequently by specialists.
4. Social Media Influencer/Youtuber
Social media influencing is probably one of the most lucrative new age careers for people who have a passion for social media, want to be their own boss, and love creating content.

With Blockchain steadily growing into a popular part of the IT industry, the demand for blockchain engineers is also rapidly rising, making the field one of the exciting new-age career options for STEM aspirants.
These engineers are hired to create and implement solutions for IT companies and various other companies of diverse industries using blockchain technology.
A solid foundation of software development and proficiency in various programming languages is needed to become a high-flying blockchain engineer.
6. Social Media Manager
Always on top of the list of exciting new age careers, social media managing is a popular profession since different platforms emerged online, as public forums, and a way to increase traffic digitally.
Social media managers plan and implement social media campaigns for businesses, brands, and organizations to increase their public visibility, engagement and in turn gain popularity at various platforms in a said period of time.
If you’re good at writing, have an understanding of how these digital platforms work and are efficient in digital marketing and customer relations, this job is apt for you.
7. Online Advertising Manager
Online advertising managers oversee, implement, manage and create a business’s digital ads for various online platforms. We often see advertisements of companies on websites, webpages, in between youtube videos, and on google search pages too. This is the work of an advertising manager.

The specialists work with high-tech systems to gather data, to create algorithms and devices. They also participate in inventing innovative gadgets and software related to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which are heavily popular in every industry today.
9. Professional Gamers
Another new age career that is very popular today is that of a professional gamer. Companies often hire gamers to test their games on the basis of user experience, bugs, speed, dialogues, and quality. They are paid to complete all levels of the game and submit a detailed review of it covering all factors that are important for a video game.
It is definitely one of the careers that will define the next decade, with the growing popularity of virtual reality, video games, and consoles.

hi hello i am feeling very angsty so: rhodeytony ft tony's worrying lack of interest in avoiding getting kidnapped and his bodyguard rhodes' increasing stress levels to save a boss that doesn't want to be saved (and, if the flutter in his heart should be anything to go by - should not be his boss anymore). bodyguard to lovers??
Rhodey is a good bodyguard. Hell, he’s the best.
That was why Pepper Potts hired him, after all. He’s not easy to fool, can follow anyone with a dogged determination that nearly defies human nature. He’s had successful stories before with glowing reviews from multiple people from all different threatened backgrounds.
(Including at least three world leaders and a pope.)
Tony Stark is...new. Well, nearly new. He’s a businessman, which isn’t anything out of the ordinary for Rhodey to deal with.
…except Tony’s highly eclectic, a billionaire, and purposely makes his behavior as erratic as possible.
It’s fun. What can Rhodey say? He loves a challenge, and Tony is about as challenging as they come.
-
When he first starts, Tony tries every trick in the book. Rhodey still sticks to him, although he does leave some distance. Tony tries to make him uncomfortable by bringing just about everyone who looks home, and all Rhodey says is, “you gonna feed them cereal when they wake up? Because that’s all you have in your pantry right now, and you don’t pay me to do the shopping.”
Tony scowls at that, and then changes his strategy.
-
It’s an odd strategy.
Tony decides he will just make Rhodey his friend, starting with the nickname of “Rhodey.”
“That’s stupid,” Rhodey says, because he can already tell it will stick.
“Not my problem, just my solution,” Tony grins. “Now come on, we’re getting burgers.”
They’re at a sit-down restaurant. One of Tony’s favorites, actually. Rhodey is not sure why he’s sitting down across from the man with the most influence in the world, but he is.
“So, what’s new with you? Who are you?” Tony asks. “Pepper sent me your file. You’re from Philly, right?”
“Oh my god, you sound weird when you say it like that,” Rhodey says, deciding against formality as he basically tells Tony Stark that he sounds weird and shouldn’t say “Philly.”
“Oh what, is that not what the locals call it?”
“I’m going to take you there and they’re going to beat you up.”
“Not the worst Sunday night I’ve ever had,” Tony mentions. “Hey, look at the menu. I don’t want you to flounder when the waitress shows up and you know fuck-all about what they have to offer.”
“Okay asshole, any recommendations?”
“The banana milkshake and bacon-burger.”
Rhodey looks at the menu.
He does end up with the bacon-burger, but chooses strawberry for his flavor of milkshake.
“You traitor.”
“Oh am I? Well then let me tell Pepper that you stole the last good pen she had then-”
Tony flings a fry at him, and Rhodey laughs.
Here’s a concerning thing: Tony has a very “c’est la vie” approach about kidnapping.
Like he genuinely doesn’t really give a shit if he knows what’s going on, or even if he doesn’t.
Rhodey was eagle-eyed and chased a van three fucking blocks and caught up to the driver, wherein he punched his lights out and got Tony out. His hands were bound in zip-ties and his suit was rumpled, but Tony just blinked at him.
“You think you broke a racing record with that?”
“Are you okay? Are you hurt? Did they take anything?”
Rhodey’s all over Tony, checking for any injuries, any stolen wallets or watches, and thank god everything is there. (Not that Tony would really care if anything was stolen, save for his sunglasses. He spends far too much on those, in Rhodey’s opinion.)
“Okay geez,” Tony says, batting Rhodey’s hands away. “I’m fine. These people were amateurs. Shit, I’m running late for my consultation meeting, aren’t I?”
“You just got kidnapped,” Rhodey says, tone rife with disbelief. “You just got taken and your concern is with the consultation meeting?”
“Well I figured that you were going to come by or I’d be gone a lot longer, but now that I’m not? Yeah. Yeah, I am concerned with the consultation meeting. It’s a tech start-up company, only not that shitty Silicon-nice-guy start-up. It’s a more inclusive thing. I don’t know, I read their little ‘about’ section on their website. Which needs work. But that’s besides the point.”
Rhodey just follows, dumb in disbelief.
The few rare times that previous clients have been kidnapped or even attempted, they’ve needed a day to recuperate at minimum. They were shaken up, and usually beefed up the security for the rest of time after it. They also scheduled therapy appointments.
Tony treated this like it was a traffic jam and he was only running five minutes behind.
The second time it happens when Rhodey’s there, it lasts a little longer.
Rhodey has to admit, he maybe did some...under-the-radar looks. The FBI wasn’t moving fast enough, and the legal channels weren’t up to snuff. And besides, Tony did say that he could use Jarvis if he really wanted to.
(Turns out they both went to MIT at the same time, and Tony had been that obnoxiously short guy in his econ class that rarely showed up, but when he did he showed up in a suspiciously nice outfit.)
It was a weekend. Rhodey had gone away for two seconds to get a drink for Tony and then he was gone.
It was...bad.
The problem is this:
Tony definitely doesn’t need to be kidnapped as often as he is. He has so many inventions that can prevent that, he’s sold quite a few of them to the military.
But for some fucking reason, he doesn’t want to be saved. No, he’s content just going along with what’s happening, even though everyone else around him wants him back. Needs him back.
He finds him bruised and tied up to a shitty folding chair.
“Hey darling,” Tony says, lips a bloody red. “Can you believe this chair? I would’ve thought they would at least have gotten something a tad nicer. I am their best-dressed guest, after all.”
Rhodey looks over the torn shirt and the pants that have all but been shredded. His shoes are battered and stained beyond repair.
“Don’t,” Rhodey says. He sounds tired. He is tired. “Don’t do this.”
“Don’t do what, get kidnapped? I hardly try,” Tony snaps. “Or do I just have a sign on my back that you didn’t know was there?”
“You know I was in the Air Force,” Rhodey snaps back. “I got high enough clearance that I was one of the guys who got to see what brand new toy you sent our way. I know you could use any of those, shit, you probably tested it out, so you would know.”
“And your point?” Tony asks. “What, you’re saying I should know better? Saying you know better than me?”
“You know what? Yeah, yeah I am saying that,” Rhodey yells as he’s untying him. “I am fucking saying that I know more than you because you couldn’t give less of a shit if you tried about your own well-being! You were kidnapped and I’ve been running myself ragged trying to get you back, and you just don’t care!”
Tony stares at him. Really stares at him.
“Let’s go home.”
Nothing else is said in the car ride home. Tony can’t even look at Rhodey.
They go home, where Pepper greets Tony with a hug and makes him swear not to leave again, and Tony says “I promise,” only they both know that he’s lying.
But they’re not calling him out on it yet. No, not tonight.
Rhodey stays. Technically he doesn’t have to. Jarvis is the most advanced artificial intelligence system in the world. Hell, he’s the only one that’s even in his league, but Rhodey just...feels better staying.
And Tony’s mansion is a gargantuan structure with about twenty different rooms to choose from, so Rhodey gets a nice view and tries to go to bed.
He’s never gotten enough sleep. He knows he never would. That’s why the army loved him: he could be up at any hour and he’d be fine. That’s why his dad called him the bane of his existence in a loving manner: Rhodey would be up at four in the morning filling out the crossword before anyone else could.
He’s up at four a.m. making breakfast.
Tony’s pantry is still shit, but it looks like Pepper went shopping for him or had someone else do it, because he actually has eggs and juice and actual food instead of the odd pickle jar or way-too-old yogurt.
“You’re...up,” Tony says.
Rhodey turns around.
“Sorry. I, um. Stayed.”
“It’s fine,” Tony says awkwardly. “What are you making?”
“Omelet.”
“I always mess those up,” he says. “Either too much cheese or I forget I’m cooking it.”
“You want one?”
“You gonna make me one?”
“Accidentally cracked one too many eggs, so yes. You want onions and spinach in yours?”
“Sure,” Tony says. “What are you doing up?”
“Always bad at sleeping,” Rhodey answers. “Can never really stay asleep for too long.”
“Forget to take your melatonin gummies?” Tony answers, grinning.
Rhodey can see a bruise on his collarbone.
“You sleep okay?”
“No, but I rarely ever do,” Tony says. “Especially after yesterday’s fiasco.”
“You mean the whole weekend,” Rhodey says, putting the rest of the eggs into the pan. “Can’t imagine that was fun.”
“Oh come on, it was a ball,” Tony answers sarcastically. “They let me play cops-and-robbers and I was given pizza. Clearly it was a fantastic time.”
Rhodey stares at Tony.
“You know in the contract that I had you sign it specifically states that you have to let me help you, right?”
“It says you have to rescue me regardless of feelings or previous obligations,” Tony says.
“Rescuing you doesn’t just mean I chase after vans and track you down in an abandoned warehouse, it means that I rescue you from those situations before they can happen. But I can only do that if you agree that you won’t get kidnapped,” he says.
“And what, I want to?” Tony asks. “Do I say that?”
“You don’t have to,” Rhodey says, flipping the omelet over. “You never think you’re worth rescuing it because you think you’re never going to be good enough and I think you think that you owe me for giving a shit.”
Tony looks at him.
“You’re really honest.”
“I try to be.”
“I love that about you.”
Rhodey’s hand shakes slightly as he moves the omelet a bit in the pan. He hopes Tony doesn’t notice.
“Well I would love it if you stopped being kidnapped.”
“Aye aye, Colonel Rhodes,” Tony says, saluting. Rhodey rolls his eyes.
“Oh my god, do not.”
“What, am I not supposed to thank our armed services for making this country safe?” he mocks, standing up. “For going above and beyond the call of patriotism and helping keep Americans everywhere safe?”
Rhodey threatens to eat his omelet when he breaks into singing the national anthem.
There’s an...understanding.
Tony starts taking up training with Happy and almost agrees to regular training with Rhodey until Rhodey wants him to get up at six and do some workouts, and he yells “No!” after one workout session.
Rhodey pointedly pretends like he’s not staring at Tony’s chest when he lifts up his shirt to wipe away the sweat.
“Come on Rhodey my darling, let’s do breakfast.”
Tony dragging him to breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. It’s...nice. Rhodey ignores it when Tony waggles his eyebrows as he takes the check and calls him “darling, honey, baby,” and he lets him because it sounds nice.
He doesn’t say anything to Tony. No, you can’t date your boss. It’s unprofessional as hell and Tony probably is just doing it because Rhodey’s in close proximity and they have a good banter going.
The next time that Tony has an attempted kidnapping, Rhodey is there.
He’s there, and he’s being taken away, dragged from Tony, and Tony for the first time looks terrified.
Rhodey tries to struggle, tries to do anything, because Tony has to get away, and he...
He’s knocked unconscious.
-
When he wakes up, his head hurts worse than it ever has, and for a moment he’s pissed at Tony because he forgets that he’s been kidnapped and there’s no control over the thermostat because the room is hot as all get out.
And then he sees Tony across from him, and he’s never seen Tony angry.
“I’m sorry,” Tony says, voice shaking. “I’ll get us out of here. I promise. I’m sorry.”
“Not your fault we have assholes take us,” Rhodey says. “But god I would kill for some air conditioning.”
Tony smiles a bit at that.
Here’s a problem: you cannot give Tony Stark anything if you want him to not escape. Either that or he has to be unconscious because he’s a stubborn son of a bitch.
And they used actual handcuffs to keep him there. God, what a joke.
Tony learned how to break out of handcuffs when he was twenty and chained to a bedpost on accident. (Long story.)
This is nothing.
But the problem is that Rhodey’s here. His bodyguard who really shouldn’t be putting his life on the line for someone as shitty as Tony, but here they are, and he has to get him out.
“Follow my lead,” Tony whispers.
“Well of course I will, who else has as much experience being kidnapped as you?” Rhodey mutters.
“Okay is now going to be the time where you sass me? You’re here too. I could leave you.”
“You’re not gonna do that, Pepper would make you come back.”
“No she wouldn’t.”
“Yeah she would!”
“Not after I tell her that you used the last of her salad dressing.”
“Shit.”
Tony snorts, looking at the room. They don’t have security cameras, which is just...questionable. Oh my god, he got kidnapped by amateurs.
He’s kind of embarrassed.
Rhodey gets free, and they’re both headed towards a door, and Rhodey picks up a stray part of a metal pole, and Tony cannot lie and say he’s not intrigued by that.
Not saying he hopes Rhodey gets to use it.
He’s just curious how he’ll utilize it.
They get to just. Walk out. They fucking walk out. What kind of people did they get kidnapped from? It can’t be that easy, can it?
It can’t be...
It is.
Okay sure Tony is driving in a hotwired car and they’re being shot at, but all things considered that’s not the worst thing. And the truck is probably considered stolen anyways, and once Tony makes it to the highway, it’s not like they’ll be able to follow without making it onto national news, not that they haven’t already.
Pepper’s very effective at getting things to trend on national news when she wants to.
Rhodey is sitting on a beach chair. He shouldn’t be, and he also shouldn’t be drinking a mimosa because it’s four p.m. and definitely the morning, but he figures since he got kidnapped he’s allowed at least one mimosa.
“So. Your first kidnapping?” Tony asks. “All things considered, yours went well. I think next time we should go to Wendy’s or something, I was starving-”
“I’m just. I’m glad we’re okay,” Rhodey says. “But yeah. Maybe next time. If there is a next time. I’m going to I think make you hold hands with me so that you don’t get napped by terrible, shitty people.”
“You could’ve just asked to hold my hand, we didn’t need to be kidnapped together,” Tony says.
“Hm, is that a breach of contract?” Rhodey teases.
“Only if Pepper decides to enforce it, and she won’t because you’re the first bodyguard to have an actual success story with me,” Tony says. “So. I’m thinking maybe we skip the kidnapping next time and go straight for dinner.”
“Oh thank god, I thought you were gonna say a fast food restaurant.”
“I still could, you don’t know,” Tony grins, winking. “What if our first date is to Burger King? What are you gonna do?”
“Be mad that I still like you,” Rhodey grumbles.
Tony cackles, dropping a kiss onto his hand.
“Do you think I should get another bodyguard or will dragging you away during a party be too awkward for them?”
“...I’ll think about it.”
(They don’t get a new bodyguard.
No matter how much the other security complains that Rhodey’s the only one who knows where Tony is at all times, and they can’t exactly ask them if they’re busy doing...things.
Rhodey finds it hilarious.)

So, a little intro piece to what I hope will be quite a few pieces about Nikolai. This part is SFW, but the rest will definitely most likely not be :)
F!reader x Nikolai Zinoviev
"Something planned for this evening?" His voice was cool, and unexpected. Sometimes you forgot there was even anyone else in the dim room, the quiet and the faint, still light thrown by blue screens suggesting solitude. You knew he preferred it that way. Wesker wasn't one for small talk.
Turning, you looked along the console to him. An imposing figure, all the more so since the Mansion Incident, Wesker was sitting watching you, his long fingers splayed on the arms of the leather chair.
You felt suddenly self-conscious. You weren't wearing anything risqué - you'd changed into a pair of smart black jeans, a dark blue top that suggested a hint of cleavage. The necklace at your throat sparkled silver in the light above you. But still, you felt suddenly naked, as though he could see through you, as transparent as water.
"I'm meeting a friend for dinner."
Wesker didn't say anything at first, but his fingers drummed very softly on the armrest. When you didn't elaborate, he continued.
"A friend we have in common?"
It was a question, but it came out sounding like a statement. You swallowed. Why were you nervous? You weren't doing anything wrong. Were you?
"Nikolai."
He stared at you for a beat longer, then turned his head to the bank of monitors on his left. His gloved hand tapped a few times on the keypad beside him. Your cheeks burned.
"He's a dangerous man. You should take care with the company you keep."
A nervous giggle bubbled from your lips, and you flashed a smile at him.
"Dangerous men seem to be the only company I keep these days."
Wesker smirked at you, but his gaze had drifted. His attention was already on something else. "Have fun, then."
"Thanks."
You pressed your palm against the release mechanism for the door and walked out of the darkened room, blinking in the sudden harsh glare of the corridor. White and chrome, stretching for miles, it seemed. Given how many people worked in this facility, it was strange that you barely saw anyone. Well, it wasn't strange on this particular floor. Here it was quiet, austere, the atmosphere monastic. People rarely came here, unless to deliver bad news, or receive it.
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, and you stepped inside. There, three versions of yourself stared back at you, identical eyebrows raised in identical appraisal. You looked okay, you thought. This was a fairly balanced assessment - your inner critic might be lying dormant, but you knew it wouldn't take much to coax her out. Instead, you combed your fingers through your hair, teasing out strands on each side of your face. You'd put on a little make-up - nothing much, only a slick of mascara, really - and you tried a shaky smile. The nerves exploded in your stomach.
There was no point in asking yourself why you were nervous. Nikolai Zinoviev was a mercenary, a ruthless man who played badly with others. But he had a wry sense of humour that delighted you, an odd chivalry about him, and eyes that were surprisingly doe-like for a trained killer. You thought him tremendously handsome, but not the kind of man you would normally be attracted to (here your mind scoffed. He was rather a lot like the kind of men you were normally attracted. Your current employer being a former case in point). If you were honest, you didn't think he would be interested, not in you, nor maybe anyone else. Certainly not for anything more than a quick fuck. So it had surprised you when he asked if you'd join him tonight.
Maybe a quick fuck was all he wanted. You didn't know. It had been a long time since you'd been on any type of date at all - working as a contact for powerful men manipulating the balance of power was exhausting, time-intensive and secretive, in effect making it almost impossible to have an intimate relationship. You didn't want to lie to anyone, or present yourself as something other than you were. You knew what your job was - you were good at it, and you were loyal, which is probably why Wesker had kept you around for so long. You knew that you weren't working for the good guys, although sometimes you could see the logic in the moves that were made. It didn't matter anyway. Good, or bad, there would always be casualties, always be compromises, always deals struck and undone. The money was good, and you were respected, although sometimes you thought that might be, in part, because of who your direct boss was.
Your job was how you had met Nikolai in the first place. You wore many hats and spun many plates for Wesker, but your chief responsibility was the allocation of contracts. At your fingertips was a database of the world's mercenaries, private armies, general guns for hire. Wesker told you what he wanted, you arranged to have it done. Simple. Most of the time, a quick encrypted message was enough to a familiar contact - a straightforward job needing executed. Other times it was more complicated, and for this you would meet contacts to discuss the details, and their compensation. Sometimes they bartered for price, but not always. Not even often, really. Wesker was well-connected and had deep pockets. His contracts were sought after, not merely because of the good pay, but because of the good graces it could land a mercenary in. Wesker might be above the interpersonal politics, but you remembered who you liked to work with, and who was unreliable, or a headache.
You liked to work with Nikolai.
Reliable, efficient, handsome. What more could an agent ask for?
You had reached the front door of the building. Sometimes you wondered if people really did believe this was simply the headquarters of an international manufacturer of lab equipment. The original story had been a HR company, but it was thought too hard to explain the delivery trucks coming in and out. You did wonder what people thought about the helicopters that came and went. It didn't matter. The town was in Wesker's pocket, or rather, in the pockets of the companies that he hid behind. Dark shades hiding dark intentions.
The company car was waiting at the kerb, and you slid into the back seat. The driver pulled away smoothly, heading downtown. You wondered if this is how Wesker had known you had plans, but you couldn't begin to guess how he suspected it was Nikolai you were meeting. It didn't really matter, you supposed. You wouldn't have lied to him. You didn't lie to Wesker and get away with it. If the man wanted to know something, then he could find it out easily enough.
The lights seemed to flicker and blur as the car moved between traffic. You would be early, most likely, but you didn't mind waiting. Maybe you'd even have a drink to calm your nerves, although drinking wasn't something you tended to do. You didn't like feeling out of control.
Soon, the car was pulling up outside a small bar. Inside, you could see patrons milling about, people drinking, heads close together. You hadn't picked the venue, but you'd read favourable reviews in the local press. You thanked the driver, pressed a crisp $20 into his hand and, taking a deep breath, got out of the car.
"Ah, Miss L/n!" The Russian accent was unmistakable, smooth and dark and dizzying. You startled, and he laughed, pushing away from the wall he'd been leaning against. "I am sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you."
The blush that was furiously spreading across your cheeks deepened as your eyes flitted across him. He seemed impossibly tall, even though you weren't particularly short, and he was wearing a smart grey linen jacket and a pale shirt over dark trousers. Even in civilian clothes, he was intimidating, but he made you feel…. safe, somehow. You knew what he had done, what he did for a living. You knew how dangerous he could be. But you didn't feel threatened by him. You smiled.
"It's alright, I just…. Well, I'm early - it didn't occur to me that you would be early too."
"I don't like a lady to have to walk into a bar unescorted." His expression was playful, and you relaxed a little.
"And they say chivalry is dead." Linking your hand into the crook of his proffered arm, you walked into the bar with him. Were you imagining it, or were people staring? Did anyone recognise either of you? Was there anyone here doing surveillance? You shook your head a little, as though trying to shake loose the thoughts. You knew Nikolai would have already run recce here. It was fine.
"Reservation, sir?" The maitre d' asked, his tone polished and bright. Nikolai smiled at the man, and you marvelled at how personable he could appear to be. You knew about his reputation. You knew about his propensity for manipulation, for ingratiating himself with people - you knew this, and worried about it, and somehow were drawn to him anyway. Maybe you had no sense of self-preservation after all.
"Novikov."
You didn’t let your eyes leave the maitre d' and his gloved hand running his pencil down the gilt-lined book, never giving away the sleight in name.
"Ah yes, sir. Yes. Please, follow me." The man made a sweeping gesture and stepped nimbly round the varnished table, and you allowed Nikolai to lead you through the bar. There were booths in the back, curved backs, sleek tables, lined along the wall, but the maitre d' led you off to the left and through a sedate black door. Behind it, there was a staircase, lit with tiny blown-glass lamps, like little frosted irises blooming with soft light. You looked up at Nikolai through your eyelashes as he held the door open for you to go through, and you both followed the man up the stairs.
With a subtle flourish, the man opened the door at the top. The room that you walked into was not as large as the bar down stairs, but there were a small number of fine booths lining the walls. Some of them were occupied, some were empty, but your eyes were drawn to the baby grand sitting on a little plinth in the centre of the room, a tall vase frothing with lilac-coloured flowers beside it. A man in coat and tails sat there, momentarily paused to take a sip of his drink and converse with one of the patrons.
"I didn't know this place was here." You admitted, feeling strangely naïve as you slid into the booth indicated by the maitre d'. The man took your drink orders and then left, and Nikolai looked at you properly for the first time.
"You look very lovely this evening. A little nervous, perhaps, but lovely."
"You look very lovely yourself, Mr. Novikov." Your smile was flirtatious, genuine. It felt as though this was the first thing you had done in an age that wasn't work. It probably was. He laughed.
"Makes sense to keep a low profile. I doubt they'd buy my name was Jones, or Smith, though. Not with this accent."
"You know, I was kind of surprised when you asked if I'd join you tonight." Your fingers played with the edge of the heavy linen napkin, lining it neatly perpendicular to the table edge. Why was it so hard to look at him all of a sudden?
His large hand covered yours, stilling your anxious fidgeting. His skin was warm - a corresponding warmth seemed to bloom low in your belly.
"Why?"
Why, indeed. You glanced up and found his eyes intent on you, his expression intense. His thumb grazed back and forth along the underside of your wrist, the movement mesmerising, tracing the thrum of your pulse.
"I guess I just never imagined you as the kind of man who'd go out for dinner." Or be interested in me. You smiled, "I don't know why I thought you would be working 24/7. Maybe it's because I've only seen you in a work capacity til now."
"There's a lot of things you don't know about me, Miss L/n". His smile was wolfish, sharp. That feeling in your belly made you shift in your seat, pressing your thighs tight together beneath the welcome cover of the table.
"I'll bet."
The smile on his face softened, and he let go of your hand, breaking the breathless feeling of falling, of your mind racing like a rabbit in the parts of your mind you normally kept the doors closed on.
"Let's spend this evening getting to know a few more things about each other, hm?" He raised his glass to you, and you mirrored him, shy and alive.

Book Forty-Six: Hearts in Atlantis
“There are also books full of great writing that don’t have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story... Don’t be like the book-snobs who won’t do that. Read something for the words- the language. Don’t be like the play-it-safers that won’t do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.”
As a lifelong and Constant reader, there are certain books that act as a time machine... I can remember where I was when I cracked the spine for the first time, my current mental state, how the people in my life impacted the way I viewed the characters, current events... the best type of books do this for you. They act as a time machine and take you back to being young and eighteen, even when you’re forty, your back hurts and you no longer have the deep sleep that only the youth are blessed with.
Hearts in Atlantis is this book for me.
Tumblr media
I remember being eighteen, and sitting on the second floor porch of the Edgewater in Old Orchard Beach, Maine; devouring the advanced reading copy like it was my job. Well, it kind of was my job; I was gainfully employed at a bookstore that took more of my money than I made. I remember a young, cute cleaning guy seeing my book, and telling me to drive up to Bangor and find Steve’s house. This struck me as a particularly inspired idea, and I convinced my mom and sister to do it.
For the very young Constant Readers, this was back before the days of social media and accessible internet. There was no typing, “How do you get to Stephen King’s house?” into Google. So, we took off on our drive, and stopped at the Bangor Chamber of Commerce and stupidly asked, “Hey, how do you find Stephen King’s house?”
They proceeded to give me directions which I jotted down...and kept! Finding this piece of paper tucked inside the book made me smile.
Tumblr media
But spoiler! The directions are backwards. Back in the day before social media, Bangor protected Steve (well, except for the asshole who hit him with his van), and they didn’t give directions out to his house to obvious tourists. Thankfully, my sense of direction is terrible, and we accidentally found Steve’s house anyway! I wish I still had the pictures, I remember grinning like a fool. It’s still one of the craziest, most spontaneous adventures ever.
Is Hearts in Atlantis a good book?
Yes.
Is my review colored by the memories surrounding this book?
Also yes.
And honestly? My reading of it this time was far richer because of all the Dark Tower references I hadn’t yet read. It’s obvious in the first novella that Steve is deep in Dark Tower thoughts. The concepts of Breakers hasn’t even been discussed in the previous four books yet. So let’s get into it, shall we?
Hearts in Atlantis is broken up into five novellas and in my opinion, the first is the strongest, and they get progressively weaker as they go on (still good, just not AS good).
The first one, Low Men in Yellow Coats centers around the unexpected friendship between Bobby Garfield and his new neighbor, Ted Brautigan. Bobby is being raised by his cold, and slightly distracted single mother, and Ted hires him for a kind-of detective job: looking for missing pets signs around the neighborhood, “items for sale” signs hung upside down in the local grocery store, and hearts, stars, and moons drawn around hopscotch outlines. If Bobby sees any of these things, he needs to tell Ted immediately, because it means The Low Men are after him. The Low Men wear yellow coats, and drive around in obnoxiously flashy cars. Ted doesn’t explain WHY they’re after him, he just explains they’re bad guys.
In the midst of his detective work, Bobby is hanging with his friends Sully-John and Carol Gerber, who he might be feeling some kind of way towards. There’s a day at the beach, and a kiss on the Ferris wheel that’s particularly sweet in it’s innocence. But then Sully John leaves for a week of YMCA camp, and Bobby is left mostly with Ted. Ted recommends Lord of the Flies, which changes Bobby’s life. He swears he’ll never go back to reading kids books again.
Bobby’s mom is really suspicious of Ted, but not too suspicious, since she leaves him in charge of Bobby while she goes to a real estate conference with her creeper of a boss. A word about Bobby’s mom. I find her to be one of the worst Steve villains written. She’s truly as evil as Pennywise. Why? Because she’s real. And there are moms out there like her. Moms that let their kids go without, but always manage to have a fresh manicure or a new bag. Moms that blame their poor living situation on their ex, and make their kids feel bad about it. Moms that just don’t like their kids. It’s a thing. And it makes me sad.
While she’s at her conference, Bobby and Ted hit up a sketchy bar in an equally sketchy neighborhood, where Ted makes a bet on an upcoming boxing match. Bobby then understands Ted has powers: he can see into the future and can read minds. And when he touches Bobby, his ability brushes off on him. Bobby has seen some of the things Ted has been warning him about, but he hasn’t told Ted, because he didn’t want Ted to get spooked and leave town. Bobby doesn’t have a lot of people who have shown an interest in him the same way Ted has.
The story comes to a climactic point when Bobby finds Carol being beaten up in the woods by some neighborhood boys. He carries her back to his place where Ted fixes her dislocated shoulder. Bobby’s mom walks in beaten up (physically) from her time at the real estate conference, and assumes Ted is molesting Carol based on the way he’s touching her, and his torn shirt.
Ted leaves, Bobby is hysterical, and his mom goes to take a nap. Bobby heads back to the bar he and Ted went to, assuming Ted is going to stop there to pick up his gambling wins. Bobby finds the Low Men escorting Ted away. Come to find out, he’s a very powerful breaker: one who can break the beams The Dark Tower is resting upon. If the breakers all go, there’s no Tower.
SO MANY DARK TOWER REFERENCES!
“All things serve the Beam”
“Ka”
“Other worlds than these”
“The Crimson King”
“All things serve The King, or All things serve The Beam?” <- a moral dilemma for our times.
“Tower, Beams, and Breakers”
So, Ted is shuffled away by the Low Men, Bobby ends up with his winnings, his mom recovers from her sexual assault, she and Bobby move away, and he keeps in touch with Carol. One day, she sends him a letter she had received from Ted, with the most beautiful rose petals inside. Tis ka.
Novella two is Hearts in Atlantis... the story of how the Vietnam War affected a group of students on the University of Maine campus in Orono, especially Peter Riley.
Pete shows up on campus with his Goldwater bumper sticker, and eventually leaves as a war protester with a peace sign scrawled on the back of his letterman jacket. It’s an honest look at how college changes kids. Few kids leave with the same beliefs and sheltered world views they go in with. And no, Karen, it’s not indoctrination by liberal professors... sometimes kids talk to each other and realize they’re not all the same, and some have viewpoints worth listening to, and potentially adapting. Mind-blowing, I know.
There’s a lot of card playing... so much card playing in fact, most of the boys don’t end up coming back to campus. This isn’t great, since you’re on the draft list if you’re not in college. Pete makes friends with, and eventually hooks up with Carol Gerber, who has to break it to her boyfriend John Sullivan (Sully John) that she’s kind of in love with someone else. Awkward.
Carol ends up protesting the Vietnam war, and drops out of college. Pete never hears from her again. He pulls his shit together, passes his classes, and realizes his original viewpoints on politics was silly and sheltered. It’s a great story.
Novella three is Blind Willie, and it’s a short, strange little story. Bill Shearman (one of the boys who beat Carol Gerber up in the first novella), travels to his office in New York City where he transforms into Blind Willie, a Vietnam war vet who panhandles for change. It’s unclear if his wife knows this is how he brings money home, and it’s also slightly unclear whether or not Bill actually becomes blind when he puts on his Blind Willie costume. But, his claim to fame is that John Sullivan pulled him out of the jungle and onto a helicopter during the Vietnam War.
Novella four is Why We’re In Vietnam and starts with John Sullivan going to the funeral for a soldier he served with in Vietnam. We find out John is frequently visited by an elderly woman he witnessed being killed in Vietnam. He refers to her as “Mamasan”. John ruminates over his fallen soldiers (some of whom were dropouts from the University of Maine Orono campus, and all knew Pete Riley), what the war did to his life, and how upset he was that Carol Gerber became an extreme protester who ended up blowing up a building that killed quite a few people, including (presumably) herself.
On his way home from the funeral, he’s stuck in crazy traffic. He looks over, and thinks he sees Carol in a car a few lanes over. He goes over to investigate, and all of a sudden, heavy, deadly garbage starts falling out of the sky. One of the things that falls is Bobby Garfield’s old baseball mitt (that Bill Shearman had stolen from him when they were kids). John grabs the mitt and tries to duck the garbage. Mamasan beckons him to her, and promises to take care of him.
There was no garbage falling out of the sky. John was killed by a major heart attack. But, he did somehow end up with Bobby’s baseball glove. Curious.
The final novella, Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling recap Bobby Garfield going back home for John’s funeral. He meets with Carol; who is no longer Carol, and now Denise Schoonover; her new identity after that whole ‘blowing up a building, killing people and faking her own death’ thing. Carol/Denise has his old baseball glove, and somehow got it from Ted, who got it from John. I’m not sure. And then fade to black.
It’s a lovely collection of novellas, all strung together with the same group of characters. Admittedly, I’m too young to know anything real about the 1960′s beyond bell bottoms and peace signs, so it was a slice of history and culture. And it wouldn’t be a Steve book if there weren’t mentions of the Derry newspaper, and a chambray work shirt.
There was one Wisconsin mention. In the first novella, Sully John’s mom was taking the Greyhound to northern Wisconsin for vacation. God bless. My own family wasn’t even able to do that this summer. #thankscovid

Seriously, y’all...
That is hands down one of the best insults I’ve heard in a long time. If I wasn’t the mother of an already feral child, I’d start using that on the reg. Do me a favor, and find a subtle way to use it in conversation sometime soon.

One of the things you both loved and admired about Hendery was how emotive he was. He wore his heart on his sleeve. But there was something he learned in the process of expressing himself; how to hide certain emotions. Negative ones, to be exact.
In the years you two have been together, you have never seen him in a negative mood outside of when you two get into an argument. However, could that be classified as negative? All he did was keep his voice level and his words honest. The only thing that would allow it to be called ‘negative’ was the fact that he wasn’t bubbly in those moments. Still, it wasn’t negative.
There are a lot of days you wonder how he does it and if there are days when it gets to be too much for him. Today happens to be one of them. You’re on your way back home from a long day at work. Your boss has been breathing down your throat to finish the assignments he assigned you yesterday and your co-workers like to get your help on everything. So you didn’t finish your assignments since you were being beckoned to every corner in the office to help review another person’s work. In conclusion, you were peeved and wanted to cuddle with your boyfriend who would know just how to bring your mood back up.
Unfortunately, the world wasn’t on your side. Traffic was worse than usual due to an accident at the intersection. As you sat in the car for the better part of an hour, you got to wondering if Hendery ever had days like this. You have been together for three years now and never have you seen him break down before. It’s a thought that consumes you the rest of your way.
When you finally reach your house, you were expecting your boyfriend to be playing a video game or eating or both; but you’re met with the lights off and silence.
“Hendery?” if you hadn’t been so silent, you might’ve missed the choked sob that left your bedroom. Slowly, you walk to the room and look around. Lights are off and the curtains are closed meaning the room is virtually pitch black aside from the small amount of light pouring in from the doorway. Carefully, you walk into the room and turn on the lights.
The image your met with has your heart tightening to an almost painful point. Hendery, the boy who has never once failed to smile, was sitting in the corner chair with his knees pressed to his chest while he stared at you with red, puffy eyes. All the tension you felt is gone and replaced with utter worry.
You want to rush over to him but then you recall how he’s approached these situations with you. He always approached you slowly and didn’t fret no matter how much he wanted to. And with no propr knowledge of how to comfort him, you mirror his actions.
“Hendery, baby, what’s wrong?” slowly, you kneel on the ground and rub his leg in gentle circles like he does for you.
“I-I thought you had to work late,” the rasp in his voice let you know that he has been crying for possibly hours at this point.
“I left early. What happened?”
“I’m sorry-” a harsh sob fell from his lips as you watched fresh tears well and slip from his eyes down the trails that have already been etched into his cheeks, “I-I just don’t know what to do. What if I’m not good enough? What if I poured everything into my work just to be dismissed and let down? What if I let the boys down? I can’t do that. I can’t let them down, not after all the hard work we’ve done. What if I let- let you down?
“I’ve tried so hard to not let anyone down. I tried so hard to not let anyone see the bad side of this job. I tried so fucking hard! Yet here I am, crying like an idiot in front of you! I can’t keep doing this [name]! It-It’s like a tidal wave. It just keeps getting worse and dragging me under before I can get out and save my-myself,” the amount of emotions that cross his face is fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. How many times has he wanted to just scream and cry but refused?
“Hendery,” his head dropped to his knees at your voice. He didn’t want to see the disappointment or pity on your face, “Hendery, look at me. Please.”
“No,” his voice was soft but it didn’t hide the crack from being worn down, “I can’t look at you.”
“Yes you can. Look at me, please,” finally he lifted his face to meet yours, “How long have you been feeling like this? And why didn’t I know when it started? Hendery, I am your significant other. I am here for you like you are me. I am supposed to be the shoulder you cry on and the person to help you make sense of all the chaos you feel. I know you’re overwhelmed, overworked, and stressed, but you have to realize that you’re not going to let anyone down. The boys and I see you give your all and thensome when you practice or go into the studio. No one is going to be disappointed if you let it be known that you’re not okay. You don’t have to be okay all the time.”
“I feel like I do.”
“And I’m here to remind you that you don’t have to be. It’s okay to cry and scream and be angry. Let me see that so I can help you. I love you a whole lot and I like you even more,” finally a smile played at his lips and you knew you were getting somewhere, “I want to help you. So how about we move to the bed, I’ll grab the snacks and put on your favorite movie?”
Reluctantly, he got up and waddled to the bed before making himself comfortable. It felt strange to be doted on by you because usually he was the one doting; but he liked knowing that you were willing to do the same. So when you finally settled next him in bed, he pulled you close to him in a tight hug.
“Thank you for being my life vest during this wave.”

The Shortcut Home ch. 4
Chapter 3
Marinette woke slowly, reality filtering into her mind like sunlight as it rose. It was hot. Her body felt like it was being roasted. With a little groan she moved to get more comfortable and realized she wasn’t alone in the bed when she met resistance. Half her body had someone else’s naked skin pressed flush against hers, from her shoulder to her waist to her feet. A lean arm encircled her back, palm gently cradling her tricep. Hot breaths puffed against her neck where her partner’s head was nuzzling into her. She blinked away the sleep fog. She saw messy blonde hair, and for a split second she thought she’d somehow fallen into bed with Chat Noir.
Then the memories came back from last night. Careful touches, sweet kisses, whispered questions in her ear. Strong hands, smooth skin, soft hair, and even softer lips. Even while the memories made Marinette relax in Adrien’s grasp, her heart thundered in her chest.
If she told fifteen-year-old Marinette where she was right now, her younger self would scream then probably pass out.
Adrien stirred. Marinette carefully sat up, dislodging his arm, and stretched with a satisfied groan. He rolled over, rubbing his eyes. She pulled his fluffy comforter more completely on top of their bodies and snuggled back up to him.
“What happened last night?” Adrien muttered.
She laughed. “Don’t tell me I have to explain to you what sex is after we just had it.”
“No, I mean - ” he stopped. “I don’t know what I mean.”
Marinette would ordinarily feel bad for laughing at his expense, but she felt too much like the embodiment of sunshine this morning to care. She contented herself with absorbing his body heat through her cheek. “Last night was so good. It’s been way too long since I got to do that.”
Adrien looked at her with serious eyes. “Do you want to have sex with me again?”
“Right now, or in general?”
“Both.”
She was still high on endorphins and dopamine and sexual relief. She crawled over him to kiss his lips. “Yes to both.”
--
Adrien tried not to be nervous. He failed.
He pulled up to the gates of the familiar mansion, Marinette crocheting in the passenger seat. He hesitated before getting out of the car. She looked up at him.
“Are you okay?”
He shook his head.
“Are you worried about his reaction?”
His voice wasn’t working. He nodded.
There was a several second long pause. “Do you think...he’ll be disappointed that it’s me?”
“No.” Oh hey, the words are back. Adrien realized it came out more forcefully than he’d intended. His leg was bouncing and he took her hand and squeezed it. “My father likes you, Marinette. He’s just traditional. And we’re not…”
“Not together,” she finished. She squeezed back. “I can’t promise you anything, Adrien, but we’re a team, remember? I’ve got you even on the off chance the worst happens.”
Adrien thought there was more than an off chance the worst would happen, but he appreciated her support. He gave her a small smile and got out of the car.
--
“Isn’t this backsliding, Tikki?”
“Backsliding?”
“You know. Getting dumped then rebounding onto old flames.”
“Well does this really count? You weren’t with Adrien before Luka.”
“But I liked him! Ugh, I don’t want to ruin what we already have. I love being Adrien’s friend. I don’t know if I’m over Luka!”
“It’s okay if you’re not, Marinette. Trust your instincts.”
Marinette wasn’t sure if that was the best idea in this situation. Her instincts all really wanted to get laid.
--
Inside, Nathalie directed them to his father’s office. Gabriel was sitting behind his desk looking far more like a boss giving a performance review than a father meeting with his son. The contrast would never had occurred to Adrien before he’d spent time with his friends’ parents. The first time Nino’s dad squeezed his shoulder, or the first time Marinette’s mom stroked his cheek, had startled him so bad his brain had skidded to a complete stop.
“Good morning, father.”
“Adrien. Mlle. Dupain-Cheng. I trust you have some important news to tell me.” Gabriel’s face was unreadable. Well, more unreadable than usual.
Marinette jolted. “How - ”
“I had a rather alarming visit from Mlle. Bourgeois yesterday,” he interrupted. “However, knowing her, I suspect that the more ludicrous details were exaggerated. So, what is it you have to tell me?”
That was just vague enough to be nerve-wracking. Adrien breathed in, then out, and said, “Marinette and I are going to have a baby. That’s pretty much all there is to it.”
“I see. When are you due?” he asked.
Marinette answered this time. “March 14th, sir.”
“A little less than six months from now. Well, I owe you both congratulations. Younger than I expected, but I’m pleased my grandchild will have a mother as responsible and resourceful as yourself.”
Relief washed through Adrien’s system. Coming from his father that may as well be the signature of approval on a binding contract. Beside him, Marinette said, “Thank you, sir.” She nudged Adrien lightly, and he looked to see her grinning at him. He couldn’t help but return it.
“Unfortunately, there are some housekeeping matters we must go over.” Ugh. He should’ve known his father wasn’t done. “As inconvenient as it may be, this family is in the public eye. It would be wise if you planned to get married as soon as possible for the sake of your reputations and careers.”
“Father!” Adrien burst out. He wasn’t certain , but he felt pretty damn sure that ‘it would be wise’ was Gabriel for ‘I’m ordering you to.’ “You can’t force Marinette into a shotgun wedding.”
“There’s no need to be upset. I assure you there are far worse things to happen to a couple than marriage.”
“But we’re not even dating!”
Silence reigned for several minutes. Adrien stared at the floor, clenched his fists, rolled back and forth on his heels, and chewed his tongue nervously. “I’m surprised at you, Adrien. That is, however, inconsequential. A scandal will open up you and Marinette to public scorn. The press is more forgiving to young lovers who married after learning they were expecting than to whatever really led to this unplanned pregnancy.”
“But - ”
Gabriel stood to walk around the desk and place both hands on his son’s shoulders, effectively shutting him up. “I do not ask this of you lightly. Once this goes public, and it will , you will both be judged harshly. I cannot allow that to happen and you to get hurt.”
“You’re just worried that if it got out your son was a single father, your company would be ruined,” Adrien responded icily.
“Trust me as a father, Adrien, this is your best option.”
Adrien didn’t respond, just turned away and stalked out of the room. He burst outside, the sun too bright, the breeze too cold, the traffic too loud, too much, too much, too much.
A soft voice spoke in his ear. “Adrien.”
He whirled around and clung to Marinette, who in turn wrapped her arms tightly around him. Frustrated tears leaked out of his eyes onto her shoulder. He didn’t mean to scream, but god there was too much crap built up inside him and he needed it out.
Five minutes or maybe an hour later he calmed with deep, shuddering breaths. Adrien realized they’d sunk onto the bottom step in front of his father’s house. The stone felt hot against his knees. Apparently neither Father nor Nathalie had come outside and he’d never been more grateful to have them at a distance while he melted down.
“I’m sorry.” He murmured the words into Marinette’s neck.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
--
“Mari, what’s wrong?”
Marinette had come into Adrien's apartment, sealed their lips together, pushed him onto the couch, kissed him senseless, and taken off his shirt. Now she straddled his lap fiddling nervously with the fabric in her hands.
“I don’t want our relationship to get weird.”
Adrien rubbed her shoulders. "Then we won’t let it.”
“Can it really be as simple as that?”
“I think so. We just have to be honest and keep trusting each other.”
“Okay. Okay." She laced her fingers at the back of his neck. "I want to keep being friends and I want to keep sleeping with you. If that’s what you want, too.”
