Fannish Songs
Once upon a time - well over a decade ago - there was a meme going around about songs you associate (for whatever reason) with tv shows you were or are fannish about. I never posted my list, but…better late than never. :)
First up, "Shades of Grey" by Billy Joel Definitely a Highlander song for me, specifically Duncan related. I remember mentioning it would make a great fanvid, and somebody (Killa? Melinda?) reached out to me and said they'd already done one…and then they sent me the CD with the vid on it. That was at least 25 years ago now…I wish I still had the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CopYqp0HZkY
"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls This is another Highlander song, but Methos this time. I suspect many people associated this song with Methos back in the day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUbJQGqFoi0
Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down This could be for Smallville, but that's a little too on the nose (plus that wasn't really my fandom), so we're back at Highlander. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtBwVWWa3Ss
"The One" by Tom Robinson Here we have a song for the 90s series The Sentinel. That's the fandom that resonates for me, but this would work with a wide variety of friends/partners to lovers pairings. By the way, Tom Robinson is great, and I'd highly recommend checking out his back catalog if you're unfamiliar with his work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIopiP_O3KA
And finally, "This Kiss" by Faith Hill A Fraser/Kowalski Due South song, my soundtrack for any fic written in response to "Mountie on the Bounty." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71BVeBY1Ob0

John Wick 4: A review.
asily the best action movie I've seen this year so far.
The John Wick movies have kept a surprising level of consistency over the years. The first film was an entertaining hour and forty-minute romp of Keanu Reeves masterfully executing a copious amount of men responsible for killing his wife and dog. It's a great stand-alone film that I did not expect to turn into a major franchise. What's equally stunning is that the second film is another solid entry for the film series. Then the third John Wick movie makes the argument for being the best of the series with heightened set pieces, and now we have four, which is an admirable send-off to the titular character, and another film for fans to argue whether or not it's the best of the four.
John Wick 4 might be the best of the bunch. The argument is there.
As the bounty continually increases against him, legendary hitman John Wick takes his fight against the rulers of the criminal underworld, the High Table, around the world. The stakes are resumed from the last film, where countless hitmen are tracking him down in hopes of claiming the bounty.
The fight scenes are just as captivating as ever, with John carefully executing and mowing down goon after goon. But other action scenes stick out even more than John's when the supporting cast gets their own wonderous scenes of slaughter. Shamier Anderson plays one of the trackers intent on collecting John's bounty. There are multiple instances where he could have possibly killed John and collected the bounty, and yet he doesn't, wanting the bounty to go higher and collect even more money. Accompanying him always is a German shepherd, and the two wreak havoc gleefully while killing others and making sure they don't kill John instead of him. Meanwhile, Donnie Yen portrays one of the coolest tropes usually seen in something like an anime: a blind hitman. Yen's physical and combative prowess has been seen before in the Ip Man movies. But his performance in John Wick 4 is on par, or arguably surpasses, the action choreography of Ip Man. Yen's late addition to the franchise desperately makes me wish he was around more in the other three films.
Besides the stellar action, the camera work remains decent, with one amazing bird's eye view during an action sequence. While the cast is a tour de force of engaging quirky characters. Scott Adkins as Killa makes for a really fun secondary villain in the middle portion of the film. He feels uplifted from an anime as well as an over-the-top baddie, and I love seeing him interact with John and fellow assassins. Bill Skarsgard is an engaging main foil to John and his interactions with Ian McShane's Winston are fun as well. The Death of Charon carries immense emotion to it, especially since the unfortunate passing of Lance Reddick earlier this year.
As the nearly three-hour movie comes to a close, we also bid farewell to a character we've gotten to know since his incarnation almost ten years ago. The send-off for John Wick feels appropriate after all the pain and suffering he's endured for four films, he deserves a good rest and to be reunited with his wife in the afterlife. It's a perfect send-off to a badass character. The one and only boogeyman.
There are talks of a John Wick 5 in development, and I literally don't know what you do for that. There are other characters the studios could absolutely focus on and develop from there, but the John Wick name should be ditched by that point. Unless the next movie follows John Wick in hell battling demons.
But if you haven't watched John Wick 4 already, do it. Matter of fact, dedicate a day to a John Wick marathon from 1 to 4. It's one of the few franchises right now that does not have a miss. Let's hope the show about the Continental is good though. Overall, it's an amazing action film, and easily cements itself in my top three films seen this year. Whether or not other movies will surpass it will have to be seen. 4.5/5. A hell of a ride from start to end.

Day 7: Rumour & Discovery
(A bit of a break, Sethrak side first!)
(Also long and violent!)
As the imperial assassins buried themselves deep within the sands of Tanaris, their daggers erect in the sand, looking like fine cacti spikes. In complete silence, they laid in wait near one of the many large, white tents that had appeared near the tanned coastline and froth of the sea. Nearby, but out of sight, Tuk’rakhul lowered a knife. His hand dripped ichor onto a rune he had carved, still smouldering with the stench of sulphur. In a flash of green flame, a final Sethrak materialises and falls to his knee, gasping for air.
“Tuk’rakhul… Why have you sssssummoned me here?” The Sethrak asked.
“Because Viceroy. I be wantin’ ya to witness de end of ya daughta’s killa.” The Zandalari replied, lifting his mask ever-so gently to reveal a twisted grin. A grin of malice. Of hate. “De spirits tell me de Vulpera will reveal ‘erself soon. Ya won’t have to wait long.” The Demoniac finished his statement with.
“And then the Empire ssssshall be mine.” Viceroy Ts’kon said, his tongue sampling the air. “I think thissss Tanarissss would make for a wonderful colony, firssst of all.” He continued, pacing up and down on the rock, surveying the dunes.
Tuk’rakhul followed his pacing side by side, a finger tracing the etched runes across his tusk. Trickery flooded his mind as he began to speak again, softly, slowly.
“Build et over de remains of de Vulpera. Name de settlement afta’ daughta’.” He said, enticing the Viceroy. His voice swaying like the wind around them.
“It hassss been a long road, Sssssscribe. I confessss, I thought you were taking me for a ride. I am sssstill sssssurpisssed that the Fangcaller let you have ssssome troopssss.”
The Scribe smiled to himself. He only got this far through trickery and threats, that he labelled as charm and wit. He waited as the early day gave way to the midday. His mind raced with gleeful thoughts; his lips shaped themselves into what could only be described as the most genuine smile he produced since his ‘partnership’ started with the Sethrak.
The Viceroy, however, did not share his companion’s joy. The indignation of being swept away from his homeland by the same foul smelling, green-tinged magic that slaughtered his people years ago began to finally spin cogwheels in his head. So caught up in vengeance he never really stopped to ask himself the obvious questions. How the Zandalari was there so quickly, how he was able to procure a bounty poster. The fact they shared the same magic. As these questions began to race through his mind, he found himself almost relieved from a trance. Had he been played for nearly a decade?
“… Jusssst what are you, Zandalari?” The Viceroy asked, turning his serpentine head to study the frame.
Tuk’rakhul simply laughed. It was amusing to him. After all this time, had the Sethrak official gained some awareness? Vengeance was such a petty, mortal driving force. He dropped his accent, if it was even his to begin with.
“Took you long enough, snake.” He said, his voice now echoing and scratchy. “I did not have your people pegged for their intelligence, but this-… this was amusing. Seven years I had everyone in your little circle enthralled. So full of arrogance and paranoia.” He continued.
The Viceroy’s face cracked with anger. Frustration. Like the political whelp he was, he found out the hard way he was a pawn in a greater power’s machinations. The ‘Zandalari’ was greatly amused by the look of revelation. The Sethrak drew a blade from his belt, remembering the haunting mockery from his previous attempt of assassination.
With a lunge and a growl, Tuk’rakhul watched as the newer blade went through his arm, which he quickly dissolved into a misty shadow. With his free hand, he grabbed the Viceroy’s hand and broke the wrist with ease. As the dagger dropped to the dusty, flat top of the rock, he resolidified his impaled arm. As a sign of power, he picked up the dagger and ate it before Ts’kon, who winced and rubbed his now broken hand.
The mouth of Tuk’rakhul distorted itself. Like a vortex of shadow as it burst beyond its usual confines. A maw of purple sucked the blade in, the Viceroy helpless to see the blade disappear into the pocket of, what seemed like, eternity. As his face contorts back into resembling that of a Zandalari, he steps forward and places his hand on the shoulder of the Sethrak.
“Stay still, Ts’kon, and prepare to see your foe delivered.” Tuk’rakhul said. His voice slowly creeping back into his projected Zandali accent. He watched as the eyes nervously followed him – trapped in his own head, unable to scream.
As the sun crept westward and bathed the dunes of Tanaris in an orange glow of summer sunset, the procession began to form. In a sick way, Tuk’rakhul couldn’t help but have a tinge of pride for the ceremony he was intruding on…
MEANWHILE, WITH THE VULPERA
Senko was adjusting her tie for the last time. Its emerald tones waving in the wind as she stood facing a mirror in the pale white tent. She grunted with each tug and twist, trying to get it to sit right. She glanced over to her best man, Lupo, with a forced grin.
“Perhaps I should’ve gone for a dress.” She mused out loud, finally getting the damnable thing at a decent length and height.
“Senko,” Lupo began to speak. “Don’t take this the wrong way but you in a dress makes as much sense as me in one.”
Senko slipped into a jacket and began working on the buttons, far less of a hassle than ties as she spoke over her shoulder: “Really? So, you’re telling me when I’m the best man at your wedding, it’ll be Vedda in the pinks and florals?” She teased. “Shame, I’m sure you’d pull off the skirt look.”
The two exchanged a laugh. At this point, they had been friends, colleagues and family for nearly a decade. Admittedly, deep down, Senko never thought she’d be the one to get married first. Fel, to put it bluntly, she didn’t think she’d ever conceive the notion of settling down. Following the 4th war and her honourable discharge from the army, she was far from a saint.
She loitered clubs of the goblin variety and indulged in many vices: drink, drugs and other depravities. Ten years ago, the notion of marriage, dating and finding true love was as foreign as the people she called family and kin. An outcast, a loner no more.
She turned around to a small table, no bigger than three shoe boxes together. A decanter of amber liquid resided on the shoddily made table. She gingerly picked up the decanter and a glass in her hand, slowly pouring it before glancing down to make sure the stained-white homework project didn’t tumble.
“Fancy a shot, Lupo?” She asked, slowly swilling the glass around.
“Are you insane?” He replied with a chuckle. He helped himself to a glass. “Although, I probably shouldn’t. My head is splitting from last night… How’d you move on from the hang over so soon?” He enquired, downing his portion with a smack of the lips and a wince of the face.
“My blood at this point is fel and fire. Any booze I drink gets burnt off in a matter of minutes. S’why I used to drink like a sailor in a divorce back in the day. Only way I could get drunk.” Senko replied, taking a hearty swig.
“Now that is cheating!” Lupo said with a grin. “Rest of us were seeing triple and singing Vol’dunai karaoke and you’re telling me you were stone-faced sober?!” He continued, feigning distress.
“Didn’t you hear me on the microphone? I would never do that sober, or willingly. You lot caught me at the time I was rather mulled.” She protested, breaking into a laugh as she took another swig.
“I wasn’t sure if that was meant to be Star Moss on the Oasis or Piprot having dental work done.” Lupo teased, gesturing towards Senko’s mouth and her booze. “Should’ve taken Piprot out for the night. I’m sure he’d do fine at singing.”
“-… I did.” Senko said, a laugh escaping her lips. “Loa, you were really gone, weren’t you?”
Lupo couldn’t retort. Even at this very moment, he was struggling on focusing on the singular Senko in the room that existed, as opposed to the drunken illusions that surrounded her. He lowered his glass, realising that another swig was not the cure. He could get plastered at the after party.
“Right!” He proclaimed, wiping his mouth with his hand. “I am off to get ready myself. I’ll be sure to shout if Vedda or I can’t crack this tie problem you struggled with so much.” He added, giving a wave as he slinked through the flap of the tent.
As the merry tone of her friend faded away, Senko turned back to the mirror one last time. A moment of quiet contemplation. She was a vixen of brooding, but with recent events and planning, she hadn’t had the time. She placed a hand on the reflection, tracing her facial scars slowly. She let out a sigh as her brows connected, mirror onto flesh.
“I don’t know where you are…” She said, solemnly, quietly. She had closed her eyes as she kept speaking. “But if you can hear me, my family, I hope you are proud of me.” She finished with.
She took a step back from the mirror, opening her eyes before glancing up at her horn. She gazed into the reflective sheen, showing her the mark of her corruption as she sipped from her glass. The horns, how useful they were. Holding bags, channelling Fel through it as a make-shift torch, goring people as if she were a Tauren, intimidation. Yet despite all the practical uses she had created; it was still a sign of ostracization. It was still a memory of her mentor, his theft of her adolescence.
It was then, she dropped the glass. Whisky coating her feet and lower legs as she growled in pain. A hand clutching the brow as she took a step back, knocking the flimsy table over. Her eyes clenched shut as she stabilised herself, at least in terms of movement. She propped herself up against the mirror before opening her eyes.
The horn began to smoulder. Only thrice this ever happened. Twice when she was on the brink of death, and the first time was when her mentor induced her. Nervously, she glanced at her body to check for any marks of an assassination attempt. Her worry only started when she couldn’t find any such wounds.
“Bastard.” She said, concluding it was the worse fate. “Inconsiderate bastard.”
Senko walked over to a chest in her temporary quarters and used her foot to kick it open. She threw out her regular robes and clothing before plucking a scabbard from the bottom of the box. Senko sighed; she promised no weapons at the wedding. Yet her paranoia was stronger than the promise made to her beloved. Despite this, in the moment, she knew it was the right choice to have broken just this one promise.
She tensed her body up and slammed through the flaps, snarling like a beast. She glanced down at the where the wedding was to be held and shook her head as she saw people busy gathering. Late to her own wedding? Unthinkable, yet it was happening.
She slid the scabbard into her beltline and walked westward. She took slow, deliberate steps before pausing at the entrance of the clearing. Surrounded by brown, sun-scorched rocks, she whispered an incantation under her breath as her facial markings began to collect green droplets that glowed a foul green. She felt her vision widen, her perception deepening. As her pupils constricted, her breathing quickened. Sight beyond sight.
Within the sands, she was able to make out five targets. The burning green blood that congealed at the corner of her eyes betrayed the Sethrak assassins as she found herself grinning. Had it not been for the fact her mentor was so close by, she would’ve found this to have been an excellent wedding gift.
She drew her sword and watched as the magical enchantments around it began to flare with baleful fire and shadow. Green and purple meshed together as she slowly span the hilt around in her hands, marching with purpose across the sands into the opening. She knew it was a trap and her heart drummed out with each step she took.
The first Sethrak, second on the left, broke first. For all the brainwashing and reprogramming her mentor did, the primal and baseline hatred they carried to Senko is what came through the strongest. With a skyglass polearm, the assassin sped across the dunes, spinning his twin-blade. Its blades kicking up sand like a dust devil before Senko plunged the sword forward, ceasing the gyrations. As the spinning stopped, Senko delivered a swift kick into the knee. She yanked the blade back and span her body around, separating head from shoulder.
Her usual fear of snakes began to burn away. The natural progression, of fear to hatred. As she watched the sizzling head stain the sand with its ichor, a malevolent smile formed itself on her face. Too long. It had been far, far too long since she slew her perennial foes.
“Suffer not the snake to slither.” She thought to herself.
She used her foot to throw the polearm up into the air, catching it with her spare hand. She aimed at the middle of the pack of assassins still in wait and flung it over, watching it sparkle with electricity as it hit the sand. With a flash, the sand cooked itself into glass – forcing the assailants to rise in unison.
Two charged her, both wielding two daggers of the same material as the polearm, their feet snapping across the glass and sand with an unnatural speed. Senko ignited her left hand with felfire and sent out a stream to ward away one attack, while she exchanged blows with the other. A swing, a parry, a riposte.
Senko span on her heels, watching the sand burn beneath the trio slowly as the one kept at bay leapt over the flame and slashed Senko down the abdomen, tearing her shirt slightly. Ichor began to stain the fabric as she withdrew the flames from behind the Sethrak, ensuring he’d catch on fire from behind.
As for the other one, he sought to drive his blade into the stab wound. Adrenaline flowed through Senko’s body, and with her eyes sore from the dark magic she used to attune herself to having sight greater than regular sight, saw the move coming. She leaned back, allowing the blade’s thrust to lessen as she curved her body. With her burning hand, she grabbed the edge of the blade, palm split.
The blood stained the skyglass, but it would soon be joined by more. Senko performed a feint, making it look like she was to drive her sword into the chest of the one who wounded her hand; however, she dropped the sword, catching it at low angle. With the deception performed, she sliced upwards, severing the attacker’s arm. With a deft motion, she span around and launched the newly removed arm through the head, blade first.
The Sethrak stumbled backwards, falling to the dunes. The last two paced up and down, tails tracing runic like markings in the sand. Perhaps it was coincidence, perhaps it was a plan. She couldn’t take the risk. With a quick motion, forming a statuesque claw motion, she aimed at the less important looking Sethrak.
Green, wispy tendrils formed at the edge of her claws. Spiralling across the evening sky, the beam of fel pierced through the serpentine body like harpoons. With sick glee, she turned her hand slowly, making a fist as the vitae began to flow from the Sethrak into Senko. The swordsman’s soul began to screech towards Senko, blue streams of energy slamming into her hand as she watched the desiccated husk collapse into a pile of sinew and stains on the sand…
