First Trailer For 'Alien: Romulus' Has Been Unleashed
For my money, both Sir Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” were worth the price of admission as the famed director dared to take this franchise he began back in 1979 in a different direction as they both dealt what happened before the events of the original. But regardless of Scott’s intentions, audiences were very critical of both films as many were expecting something along the…

5/14/24 ~ Also picked up more grafted Cherokee Purple & Brandywine tomatoes that were going to get tossed at school. These are way bigger than mine - but they have been in the greenhouse. I noticed they have whiteflies, so outside they go without hardening them off 😅

Flat Top Desk, 1929 and 1962, Walnut and padauk, Flat Top Desk Chair, 1929, Walnut, padauk and laced leather seat, Flat Top Desk Figure, 1929, Bronze cast of cocobolo original

“Head of Dreiser”, ca.1927, Pine- This is a portrait of writer Theodore Dreiser who Esherick met in 1924 through the Hedgerow Theatre. This was a rough, geometric sketch for a finished mahogany piece.

“Self Portrait”, 1919, Oil on canvas
The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick, on view at Brandywine Museum of Art, presents a wonderful look at the artist’s varied work from throughout his career.
From the museum-
This exhibition explores the interdisciplinary creativity of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), the famed American artist best known as the father of the Studio Furniture Movement.
Esherick considered his hillside home and studio, now the Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM), the best representation of his iconoclastic vision, calling it “an autobiography in three dimensions.” Built between 1926 and 1966, his unconventional escape on the verdant slopes of Valley Forge Mountain houses almost 3000 iconic works of art from across Esherick’s seven decades of artistic practice.
The Crafted World brings selections from this rich and rarely loaned collection to a broader public, including many objects never before seen except in Esherick’s home and studio. Detailing the artist’s career from his early woodcut illustrations for books by members of the avant-garde literati to his revolutionary reimagining of furniture forms as organic sculpture, works will be presented in thematic vignettes that invite visitors into Esherick’s story and bring the essence of his creative world into the gallery.
Below are a few more selections.

“Drop Leaf Desk”, 1927

“Hedgerow Theatre Lobby Stair Model”, 1934, Walnut; “Spiral Staircase Model”, 1963,Pine; “Bok House Chimney Stair Model”, 1937
From the museum about the staircase models above-
Esherick made numerous objects centering on the twist or spiral to represent natural growth. He returned to this form in models for staircase commissions for the Bok House- in which the spiral is created through gradual shifts in the shape and width of each step- and for the Hedgerow Theatre- which features a staircase like the Studio’s that revolves around a center post.

“Moonlight on Alabama Pines”,1919-20, Oil on canvas, carved wood frame with metallic paint (left) and Alabama Pine woodblock (right)

"Oblivion” 1934, Walnut
About the sculpture above, Oblivion, from the museum-
Moved by the emotion and physicality of actors, Esherick spent many hours in the balcony of the Hedgerow Theatre, in nearby Rose Valley, sketching performers, and many more hours designing stage sets, props, posters, and other visual elements for their productions. Oblivion was inspired by the passionate embrace of two actors in The Son of Perdition, a play by Lynn Riggs. This organic, fluid sculpture offers an exaggerated rendering of emotion as two intertwined bodies, carved from a single log, seem to softly dissolve into one another. Oblivion was prominently featured in the sculpture portion of the second Whitney Biennial in 1936.
This exhibition closes Sunday, 1/19/25.

On SALE: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/poetry-in-motion-stasis-by-carlo-diorio/
Poetry, In Motion & Stasis is a collection of 19 poems by Carlo DiOrio, with #sketch #illustrations by Joe Cairone accompanying 11 of the works. The poems and illustrations deal with experiences arising out of our many life passages — touching on themes of love, loss, laughter — and were written between 2016 and 2024 in Florida, California and New Jersey. It is DiOrio’s first published poetry collection. #poetry #love #aging #life
Carlo DiOrio is a longtime journalist whose poems have appeared in publications including California Quarterly, The Artisan Magazine and CaKe, A Literary Journal. A Philadelphia native, he lived for many years in Los Angeles and now resides in Largo, Fla.
Joseph Cairone is a former landscape architect and a Pennsylvania-based artist who works in watercolor, oils, pen & ink and other mediums. His mentors have included Karl J. Kuerner of the Brandywine Conservancy in Chadds Ford, Pa.
PRAISE FOR POETRY, IN MOTION & STASIS by Carlo DiOrio
The collaborative energy between the poems and the illustrations charges our understanding of Thoreau’s “Simplify, simplify” with an even newer meaning. It is marvelous to discover DiOrio’s nuanced spiritual quest, his praying act of poetry. Imagine worshiping a cuddle, or the warmth of ambition. This is a fabulous work of love and joy, a sacred conversation between poet and artist, a crystallized harmony.
–Thomas Sayers Ellis, author of Skin Inc.: Identity Repair Poems
“This collection by Carlo DiOrio is a rich observation of a life like yours and mine, at what feels like a very good half-way point to assess. The charm and challenge, youth and presence, question and knowing, are summed nicely here, at the cross streets of “Motion & Stasis.”

'Aliens' Cast Discuss Their Most Quotable Lines
While at the Days of the Dead convention held in Los Angeles, California in late August of 2023, I got to sit in with others on the “Aliens” panel which featured several actors from the classic film which proved to be one of the best sequels and science-fiction thrillers ever made. An audience member told the cast how this is one of the most quotable motion pictures of all time and asked if they…

Master the Art of Growing Tomatoes for Your Juiciest Harvest Yet

Tomato plants are a rewarding and fun experience for gardeners of all ages. Not only are tomatoes packed with nutrients, but they are also a delicious, bright and juicy addition to salads, pasta dishes, pizzas, salsas, and sauces. Tomatoes are a great way to add flavor and nutrition to any meal or snack. Growing tomatoes can be a fun and easy process, and harvesting your own tomatoes makes them even tastier. ```html
Uncover Tomato Growing Secrets For Irresistibly Juicy Harvests
There’s something magical about plucking a blushing tomato off the vine, still warm from the sun. But here’s the thing: growing mouthwatering, juicy tomatoes isn’t just about planting seeds and hoping for the best. It’s an art—a mix of science, patience, and a pinch of trial-and-error.
Over the years, I’ve stumbled (and sometimes sprinted) my way into tomato-growing success. Along the way, I’ve discovered a few golden rules that can transform your harvests from “meh” to magnificent. Let me share the secrets that turned my backyard plot into a summer tomato haven.
1. Choose Your Tomato Wisely
Before you even get your hands dirty, remember this: not all tomatoes are created equal. Are you after robust slicers for sandwiches, golden cherries for snacking, or heirlooms with stories written in their stripes? Picking the right variety for your climate and taste goals is half the battle.
Once, I tried growing Brandywine heirlooms in a sweltering, humid summer, thinking they'd thrive. Spoiler alert: they didn’t. Lesson learned—make sure your dream tomato aligns with your local conditions.
2. The Soil Holds the Secret Sauce
Think of your soil as the foundation of a gourmet meal. If it’s bland, your tomatoes will be too. Enrich it with compost, aged manure, or even coffee grounds to boost its nutrient profile.
One season, I tested two garden beds: one with basic soil and another with an organic compost blend. The latter produced plump, flavorful tomatoes; the former? Let’s just say we called those “learning tomatoes.”
3. Watering: It's a Balancing Act
Here’s a pro tip: tomatoes hate extremes. Too much water, and they’ll sulk with split skins; too little, and they’ll taste bland. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not swampy.
I make it a habit to water deeply in the morning, letting the plants sip slowly through the day. Mulching around the base has been a game-changer for locking in moisture during blazing summer heat.
4. Give Them Room to Shine
It’s tempting to crowd plants together, but tomatoes need their personal space. Good airflow prevents diseases, while the sun ensures sweet, flavorful fruit.
I learned this lesson the hard way during my first attempt. I crammed five tomato plants into a tiny corner. The result? A jungle of tangled vines and a disappointing yield. Trust me—less is more when it comes to spacing.
5. Prune Like a Pro
Tomatoes thrive on a little tough love. Snipping off unnecessary suckers (those little shoots between the main stem and branches) helps direct energy towards fruit production rather than foliage.
*Think of pruning as guiding your plant to focus on quality over quantity. It’s like editing a story—you cut the fluff to make the masterpiece shine.*
Don't go wild, though. Over-pruning can stress your plant. A balance, like all things in gardening, is key.
6. Feed Them Right
Your tomatoes are hungry, but they’re picky eaters. Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season—one that’s rich in phosphorus and potassium for fruit development.
Last summer, I switched to a slow-release organic fertilizer, and the difference was remarkable. My tomatoes tasted like sunshine bottled up. Trust me, it’s worth investing in their diet.
7. The Pollination Puzzle
Tomatoes are self-pollinating, but a little help never hurts. Gently shaking the flowers or inviting pollinators like bees into your garden can boost fruit production.
One trick I swear by? Planting marigolds nearby. They not only attract bees but also deter pests, making them the ultimate tomato sidekick.
The Sweet Taste of Success
When you nail the basics, tomatoes will reward you with fruits so flavorful they’ll ruin grocery store varieties forever. And the best part? Each harvest comes with its own story, its own pride.
If you’re eager to dig deeper into tomato wisdom, check out my other article on insert link here. Trust me, the juiciest secrets are just waiting to be uncovered!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your trowel, roll up your sleeves, and let this season be the one where your tomatoes become the envy of the entire neighborhood. Your taste buds will thank you.

4/1/24 ~ We learned how to graft tomatoes last week at school! Grafting is when you combine two different varieties. We used Rootstock tomatoes for the base because they produce a lot of fruit and have a strong root system. For the tops, we used heirloom tomatoes which are known for being finicky and not produce as much (Cherokee Purple & Brandywine). This was my first time doing it and I had a lot of fun. I’m actually ordering some stuff to do my own science experiments with 🧪🌱

Teavent Day 7
[Transcript]
Day 7
This episode pairs well with White Wedding White Tea
Brandywine falls is a 86- foot waterfall in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. To view the waterfall, you follow a trail that is mostly boardwalk. There are stairs down to the observation deck, which means a climb on the way back, but it is otherwise not a hugely difficult trail.
On a Friday in May of 2019, a flash of red alerted those on the observation deck of the presence of a cardinal watching the proceedings. The cardinal did not know what was happening or why the people were gathered there, but it felt drawn to the proceedings, flitting back and forth as the group on the observation deck doubled in size, standing in rows. One of the people saw him and broke down into tears.
In that moment, he swore he knew her, remembering a time when he could not fly. She meant something to him, he could feel it. He had to be here.
