What to Look For in a Web Design Program
You've decided that Web design is the career for you. You're ready to jump into the game, but you're going to need some education on how to design Web sites first. However, with literally hundreds of schools offering courses in every possible permutation - Web site design or graphic design with a focus on Web sites; certificates or full degrees - how do you decide which program meets your needs?
Tumblr media
Skills taught in a Web Design program
Web site designers require a vast array of skills, not all of which are (or can be!) taught in the classroom. However, there are certain skills that all Web designers should know. First among these is HTML (HyperText Markup Language) code, which comprises the building blocks of the Web. All Web sites, no matter how fancy or how focused on Flash animation, consist of HTML at their core.
Although most designers now use Web editing programs such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver to design Web sites, in order to understand what is actually happening when the Web site loads, you need to know HTML. For entry-level positions, this markup language can be enough, but for more advanced positions, you should learn one or more other markup languages, such as XML (eXtended Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), as well as one or more scripting languages, such as JavaScript
and ActiveX.
You will also need to learn the basics of making a Web site look neat and professional. Although it may seem elementary, there are a wide range of techniques involved in creating a Web site that flows well. A logical site is designed to allow the user to quickly understand the purpose of the Web site, and to easily find the information he or she needs. Although this is obviously more of an art than a science, there are many techniques that help users navigate each page within a site more effectively and quickly. As a Web
site designer, you should be fluent in these techniques.
To work on Web sites, you'll also need to understand the basics of how a computer operates. These technical skills enable you to set up and modify the Web site. Being able to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clients to add pages and upload site changes is paramount. So is being able to modify the site contents manually by using text editor software. Some of this software allows you to view changes instantaneously, such as the Real-Time HTML Editor, which is available online. Other text editors are included with your
office computer, or can be installed, enabling you to work on site contents outside of a site editing program.
Finally, depending on the specific career path you have in mind, you may need to have other skills. If you are focusing more on the graphic design aspect of Web design, you will need to focus on learning about vector and raster graphics. Raster graphics, comprised of grids of tiny pixels, are dependent on the size and quality of the image - photographs are raster images, for example, and can look blurry or sharp, depending upon image size and resolution. Vector graphics use geographical points and coordinates
instead of pixels, and can be resized without losing image quality. Typography, or the art of choosing and using fonts and typefaces, is also important. Page layout, or the skill of combining pictures, text, links, and animated images on a Web site to create a pleasing overall design, is also very important.
If, however, you are more interested in the technical aspects of maintaining a Web site, you will need to focus more on server administration, namely by learning to use Web server software (such as Microsoft IIS or Apache), and understanding how to run log analysis so you can track who visits the site, and how frequently you receive unique visitors. There are other specific domains in the field of Web design, including site optimization, security, usability, and quality assurance. Each sub-specialty in the Web design field requires the knowing the design basics described above, plus additional skills which you can learn in class and on the job.
In summary, these are the type of Web design classes you can look forward to taking:
HTML and other markup/scripting languages
Web site graphics and layout design
Some technical skills necessary to publish a Web site
Other skills related to the specific type of Web design career you want to pursue

On Fixing The Important Garage Door Issues
Garage doors have two main components; namely the garage door itself and the garage door opener. Garage doors are part of most buildings and it is advisable that the property owners stay informed of little things that can go wrong with their garage doors and the art of fixing them so that they are not left strangled with a faulty door during a crucially important hour. Though you need to call professionals to inspect and set right the garage door issues, there is nothing wrong in knowing about these most obvious problems to be able to do something from your end during emergency.
The main technology behind overhead garage doors is the spring tension. Using this principle, either they roll up in sections or swing up as one piece. There are metal tracks fixed to the garage walls and the doors move on these tracks. The power for the movement is duly provided by the spring or set of springs. When you detect some fault in the doors, you may need to check a few things given below.
First and foremost, inspect the metal tracks inside the garage. Survey the mounting brackets that hold the tracks firmly to the walls. If you find them loose, you can tighten the bolts and screws. When you work inside the garage with the door in closed position, check whether there are any dents, crimps or flat spots. If you happen to notice them you can use a rubber mallet to pound them. You may also use a hammer or a block of scrap wood. If you find the tracks damaged badly, then it might be the time to replace them for new ones.
Check the alignment of the tracks. Understand that the horizontal tracks need to slant slightly down towards the back side of the garage. In case of roll up doors, the vertical section of the tracks needs to be precisely plump. When you notice the tracks on the walls, both the tracks must be at the same height. If there is something wrong with the track alignment, then loosen the screws and bolts and tap in a way the tracks come to position. Once again check the tracks with level. Finally tighten the screws and blots.
You may use a concentrated household cleaner to clean the tracks in order to clear the debris collection and the accumulation of hardened grease application.
Inspect to see whether there are any loose hardware and tighten them. In case of swing up doors, check the plates at the point where the springs are mounted to ensure the screws hold tightly. In case of roll up doors, inspect to check whether the hinges are holding the sections of the door together. If you find the hinges damaged, replace them and if you find screws loose, tighten them. If you see the door sagging at one side, then you may probably need to service the hinges. If you find the screws hole enlarged, then replace the screw with new ones that are longer with the same diameter. While fixing the new screw, you might as well use a hollow fibre plug dipped in carpenter's glue. If the wood near the hinges is cracked, then remove the screws, fill the crack with wood filler and let it dry before fixing the screws once again. These little maintenance tasks can be tried from yourside if you have the necessary implements and interest before you call a professional.

Climate Change Protesters Blocked Eastport Drive At Burlington Canal Lift Bridge
A small group of protesters hoping to encourage government action on climate change blocked a road Thursday morning at the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. The group, Extinction Rebellion Hamilton, announced their plans to block the lift bridge earlier this week. Read more here.
A small group of protesters blocked a road at the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. Extinction Rebellion Hamilton (ERH) is hoping to encourage government action on climate change and has announced their plans beforehand. ERH is a part of an international movement that launched a year ago in the United Kingdom with the goal of engaging in non-violent civil disobedience to push the government to hear their plea. Members of the movement held banners, and several times during the hour stood in the middle of the road paralyzing traffic for about 5 minutes each time. They apologized for the inconvenience they've caused and stated that what they are doing is for the good of the majority.
Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington
Regarded as the largest botanical garden in Canada, the Royal Botanical Garden (RBG) is also a National Historic Site and a registered charitable organization with a mission to bring together people, plants, and nature. RBG is located at the western tip of Lake Ontario and is made up of four distinct formal gardens. It is comprised of 1,100 hectares of a nature reserve, nestled into the slopes of Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. Some of the most visited areas here in RBG are the indoor Mediterranean Garden and a 27-km nature trail. You can also explore and enjoy the many historical outdoor plant collection they have.
Ideally, when people create webpages to advertise their businesses, they are hoping that when someone searches the net for their services, the name of their company will pop up on the top of the list. Interview with Rosie Burthom
Thank you for joining us, I have a special guest with me this lovely afternoon Rosie Burthom author of The Doll: Lillian Darkwood Mystery.
Tumblr media
Author Bio
The daughter of a Draftsman and a homemaker, Rosie grew up in various provinces in Canada. She spent most of her childhood in British Columbia before moving to Saskatchewan for a year and eventually putting down roots in Ontario. Rosie's writing journey originated in her early teens. She started out writing children’s stories, then expanded her skills into writing personal poetry and short stories for children. Recently, she has branched out to writing Paranormal Thrillers. Rosie has always been a huge bookworm of Mystery/Suspense Novels. That is why, she is very excited to finally be following her dream of becoming a published writer.
Rosie is a graduate of Graphic Arts and Business both taken at Mohawk College in Brantford, ON.  Rosie also has diploma in Office Administration and is MS Office 2007 Certified. When Rosie is not writing novels, she enjoys various hobbies such as crafting, art journaling, hiking, photographing nature, and spending time with her boyfriend  and two cats.
R. J. Davies (RJD): Good afternoon Rosie, thanks for joining us. My first question is do you ever Google yourself?
Rosie Burthom (RB): yes I have on occasion just cause I'm curious what comes up.
RJD: Which writers inspire you?
RB: Stephen King, Maureen Jennings, Catherine Astolfo
RJD: Great choices. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
RB: When I was eleven
RJD: Seems to be a trend, being drawn to this craft at a young age. Do you believe in writer’s block? If so, how do you combat it?
RB: I do believe in writer's block because I've had it. In order to get past it, I take a break from what is causing the block and try writing something for one of the writing prompts I find online. Pinterest is a good place for prompt or I just google writing prompts. The picture prompts are good too.
RJD: Thank you for sharing that. Do you carve out time, such as a structured schedule for your writing? How is your day structured when it comes to writing? Do you write every day?
RB: I wish I could focus enough to write every day. Sometimes there are big gaps of days or weeks in between my writing periods. Then other times I will write all day every day like an obsessed crazy person. (We both laugh) Those are the times when I get a good idea and the story just flows on to the paper like water from a tap.
RJD: What draws you to the genre that you write?
RB: As far back as I can remember I've had terrible nightmares of things that could never be real. I've always had a vivid imagination but nothing compared to my nightmares. It took over 30 years to figure out that perhaps my nightmares were telling me what to write. They do say 'write what you know.' I know nightmares and I've always believed in the paranormal. I've even seen and felt a paranormal presence in my past.
RJD: What do you read?
RB: Lately, I've been reading a lot of paranormal related books for research purposes. But my regular reading usually consists of murder mysteries, cozy mysteries anything that is a 'who done it' type story.
RJD: What does your family think about your writing? Do they read your work?
RB: My family is supportive of my writing. My mother read my book 'The Doll' and she liked it. My sister and brother haven't read anything yet but they are very supportive.
RJD: That is awesome.  What is the craziest thing you’ve done in your life?
RB: The craziest thing I have done in my life would be standing up to the drug dealer that lived upstairs above my first apartment. I lived downtown Brantford in one of the buildings they tore down ten years ago. The guy upstairs was dealing off the roof outside my bedroom window, and he and his friends did drugs in the lobby outside my apartment door. One day I had enough and I confronted him on the small landing of the floor he lived on. I was never so scared in my life.
RJD: Oh wow, that sounds intense. I’m glad it all worked out. How would family and friends describe you?
RB: Family and friends would probably say I'm determined. When I decide I'm going to do something I find a way to do it no matter what the consequences. They would also say I'm kind and selfless. I would bend over backward to help someone and not care if I get the same in return. I've been told I have an amazing imagination and that it comes across in my writing.
RJD: That is beautiful. Thank you so much for joining me today.
RB: Thanks for having me.
RJD: Any time, wishing you much luck in the future. If you haven’t checked out Rosie Burthom‘s The Doll: Lillian Darkwood Mystery available on Amazon.

GWCA First Lecture: Canada’s First World War and the Politics of The Past by Jon Weier
Jon Weier is a Western University of Western Ontario PHD candidate working on a dissertation National and Religious identities in the Canadian, American and British YMCAs During the First World War was the speaker for the night.
An unusual situation occurred before the talk. The power for the block of buildings in which the lecture was to occur went off and since the building was only on emergency power the people attend the event decided to walk to Cultures Coffee and retire there to have the seminar. It was a bit of a sight watching approximately 30 people tramping down Dalhousie Street in search of a building and business that had power.
Lecture Summary
Please note that these notes are from the lecture and the author has added content from his own experience and perspective.
Mr. Weier present his topic in rather unusual circumstances as the usual facilities where not available. His knowledge of his topic and reference to his visuals was a big help and the lack of them did not detract from his talk but would have enhanced it.
Taking a moment to introduce himself and his interest in history and the involvement of the YMCA in the First World War Mr. Weier hope to present the role of commemoration if the First World War and its commemoration in Canada.
As an example regarding perceptions of war he referenced the works by two works of art. One by British war artist Richard Jack and Canadian war artist and Group of Seven member, Frederick Varley. Both pictures show different conceptions of war by their form. One showing stoic Canadian heroism in the face of the enemy and the other showing the realistic aftermath of combat.
The Second Battle of Ypres, 22 April to 25 May 1915 by Richard Jack
“For What” by Frederick Varley, 1918.
His interest in the First World War stemmed from a CBC radio program that investigated the alleged crucifixion of a Canadian soldier at Ypres called “Canada’s Golgotha”.
Mr. Weier’s remarks reviewed the changes in attitudes towards war using movies and other media as examples.

In 1979 a remake of the classic 1930s war film “All Quiet on the Western Front” adapted from the book of the same title by Erich Maria Remarque was released to television. This film may have served as a proxy to overt statements against the Vietnam War as the conflict deals from a German perspective of the First World War.
The tensions and recent American defeat of the Vietnam war established an unpopularity of war movies. As the end of the Vietnam era came to a close the Cold War and its related tension in other geo-political areas stepped up the public concern for nuclear war. The Doomsday Clock was  at some of its lowest points in its history and the threat of actual nuclear war was so present that several NATO countries produced TV series in an expression of this fear. Of note was “The Day After” aired by ABC November 20, 1983 and was the 7th highest rated non-sport show at that time in regards to viewers. BBC Two aired “Threads” September 23, 1984 and it had the highest ratings of any show on that channel up to that time.
In addition cinema was making overt anti-war statements or portraying war in such a realistic manner as to visually, if not viscerally, impact the audience to respond to war. Of note are the American movies “Apocalypse Now” (1979) and “Platoon” (1986). Between the two moves “Apocalypse Now” is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and other influences and is a strongly allegorical thematically and not representative of actual events. In contrast, “Platoon” is written and directed by Oliver Stone (twice wounded and Bronze Star recipient) was a deeply violent and disturbing movie based on his combat experience in Vietnam.
Tom Berenger as Staff Sgt. Robert Barnes. The representation of the expression of war as the ends justifies the means. The use of terror and violence as necessary element of combat.
Robert Duvall as Lieutenant-Colonel Kilgore. The war loving commander who uses technology to defeat the enemy but to isolate himself from the violence. Watching from afar he remarks with deep melancholy: “Some day this war is gonna end.”
In Canada three examples of this expression toward war are represented by the re-release of the 1928 novella by Canadian soldier Charles Yale Harrison “Generals Die in Bed” in 1975 by Potlach Books. This novella is currently available at bookstores and at Project Gutenberg. CBC radio produced a series entitled “Flanders Fields: Canadian Voices in World War 1” (available at iTunes and CD through the local library) took the position biased to the common soldier versus the hierarchy and bureaucracy of the Officer class.
Of note was organization The War Amps. This organization was founded in 1918 in direct response to a need generated by war – the support of amputees resulting from wounds and injuries sustained by Canadian soldiers in the First World War. This organization to a stance with a series of films thematically connected and called “Never Again”.
This sentiment is further given expression that “there is no victory in war” from the failed peace-keeping missions in Somalia and the genocides of Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
1990s
1990 leads to push back against anti-war sentiment and a renewed interest in the military achievements of the Canadian Forces during the Second World War. This is, in part, because of the 50th Anniversary of many of the events of this war and it represented most effectively by the movie “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) and the HBO series “Band of Brothers” (2001).  In Canada the 3 part CBC documentary series “The Valour and the Horror” (1992). The Canadian Legion reacts to the series as it does not agree with the portrayal of  Bomber Command and “Bomber Harris”. Veterans respond that this series does not reflect their perspective of the war and does not reflect the historical necessity of the bombing war. It is interesting to note that only two of the installments are available at the NFB web site for viewing. The Dieppe Raid is also reexamined for its utility and value to the war effort and questions the necessity of this action which cost so much in Canadian lives.
Now
The active participation of the Federal Government in commemoration of the First World War is minimal. Possible influences in this down-graded role is its past experience with the bi-centennial of The War 0f 1812, which was not very successful due to poor execution. In response to this the creation of non-profit groups such as Active History and groups like the Great War Centenary Association, Oxford County, and individuals using social media and other resources takes up the “slack” of government efforts.
Some examples:
Creation of not-for-profit groups. Historica Dominion created from two groups to put a different perspective of Canada’s history of the First World War.
The creation of Historica Canada’s Heritate Minutes. 3 of them that are representative of their work: In Flanders Fields with Colm Feore/Valour Road in Winnipeg that earned VC/Battle of Vimy Ridge
Birth of the Reform Party with a military heritage. Lester Pearson St. Laurent – peace. Warrior mythology with support to war on terror and in Afghanistan.
The movie “c” (2008) had support from the Canadian Government and the Dominion Institute.
The 2nd and 3rd Battle of Ypres as representative of the futility of war.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Last 100 Days as representative of the birth of the Canadian nation and the elite reputation of Canadian troops at the sharp end.
Contrasting the Canadian efforts with the British efforts illustrates the greater commitment of the UK government and public to the First World War centenary where as some of the efforts are private and have suffered negative publicity, such as the the Never Forgotten War Memorial in Cape Breton.
Never Forgotten National Memorial Concept
Poppies representing all the UK soldiers who perished in WW1 at the Tower of London.
Active History
www.activehistory.ca is looking for articles about the First World War and perspectives on history and any contributions would be appreciated.
Conclusion
The lecture offered a comprehensive overview of the social context of the resent perceptional developments that would have influenced Canadians in their perspective of war, and particularly, the First World War. There is a robust local and national interest in the war and its commemoration using the tools of technology but the Canadian Government is not leading this effort.
Thanks
Thanks to all the volunteers of the GWCA and the staff at the Brantford Coffee Culture that had an inundation of customers due to the power outage. Thanks to Jon Weier for knowing his “stuff” so well that he switched horses in stride and seamlessly and gave a great lecture.
