ok i don’t think we acknowledged how crazy the line “all he’ll see is me” is. for us (the audience), we’re like yeah sure duh! bc we’ve seen the OT trilogy and heard vader say “kenobi is all that matters”—for us, it’s like of course all vader will see is obi-wan; he’s obsessed with the guy.

but obi-wan doesn’t know that. he just found out, like, yesterday, that anakin’s still alive, so he most certainly hasn’t heard about vader’s relentless quest to find and destroy him like sidious and all the other long-suffering imperial officers (yeah vader attacks him and reva mentions that he’s been looking for him for a while but like thats not indicative of an obsession, that’s just regular revenge stuff).

and yet obi-wan just…makes that assumption. that anakin is for sure definitely 100% obsessed with him to the point that he’ll let the rebel force threatening his empire escape without a second thought if he even catches a glimpse of obi wan.

that is an actual balls to the wall crazy assumption that no normal person would make about another normal person considering those two people haven’t interacted in a DECADE.

and still!! obi-wan is so confident in this assumption that he’s willing to bet the lives of innocent people—including the life of leia, his four closest friends’ joint child—on it, on the fact that “all he’ll see is me.”

ofc he’s right but how horrifically insane and sad and kinda beautiful is that?? that he knows him so well?? that they’re so connected even after all this time that obi wan knows anakin will feel the same about him as obi wan does about anakin bc all obi-wan sees is him, too?

it's the way obi-wan can do so little to raise luke and leia directly without putting them in danger. leia lives on another planet and owen pushes obi-wan away to protect luke from the lifestyle that everyone believes killed his father. and obi-wan is too afraid to let them in. to let them become another anakin. but he still buys luke a toy ship. and when leia grabs the gloves to try on, he barely hesitates to buy them for her. he loves those kids but he's so afraid to make the same mistakes that he just gets them gifts. a jedi master, who has little material possessions himself. does it remind him of anakin's model ships, does it mean he was the one to buy them for anakin as a way of showing his love when he was too afraid to? is buying a gift for a child the only way he can think to show his love, even decades later?

really very sad about obi wan gaining responsibilities of anakin but still not being used to being a someone depended upon. he was with qui gon for so long and is so used to being somewhat of a tool for qui gon, hes so used to being selfless and dedicating himself completely to the overall goal of being worthy of a teacher, he still throws himself into missions without thinking and he ends up in the halls of healing and he sees anakin by his side, sleeping and gripping obi wans hand because when slaves would get sick on tatooine theyd get taken and “disposed of” when no one was around so anakin stayed by obi wan to make sure nothing happened and thats when it clicks for him that he has to raise this child because anakin deserves to grow up safe without fear of anything happening and if its not him anakin wont be given the life he deserves and anakin teaches obi wan just like obi wan teaches anakin because theyre two sides of the same coin and destined to be in the force together as brothers

i love every single obiani force dyad truther out there because the concept literally got wasted so hard on r*ylo and so the thought process for the theory is basically like "oh so there's a super special force bond that connects two people over time and space? epic. lets give it to a duo where the characters actually have the deep emotional context to back something like this and also we're going to specifically use it in a platonic context because amatonormativity is cringe"

you know something really stupid that irks me? when star wars fans overuse the word brothers to describe A&O's dynamic or they make the characters say/think it in fanfiction

they're brothers in arms, sure, but i swear snsnsjjs the sibiling connotations sounds so WRONG to my ears. even platonically.

but maybe it's because i just hate the nuclear family structure applied to jedi order members that arent actually related, because you know, THAT DEFIES THE POINT OF THE JEDI ENTIRELY but who am i to talk

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

When the fandom ships him with happiness! When they give him any kind of happiness because he deserves it so much. And heaven knows he doesn't get a ton in canon. lol

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

obikin! i am a very, very long-time brobikin fan and still am - that pair means everything to me platonically, as 'brothers,' as master and apprentice, as friends, etc. etc. But their rich story in canon means there's also a lot to play with for a ship, too! I wouldn't ever want it to be canon, it's perfect the way it is, but it's just another interesting dynamic.

Then you've got Matthew Stover out here writing,

And like.... come on. Complementary halves! It doesn't get much better than that.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

I saw the OT in maybe the early 90s, and I have to admit, i was a lot more taken with young Harrison Ford then lol. But i liked Obi-Wan a lot! It took the prequels though for me to really LOVE him, know what i mean? When he came on screen with his magic anxiety, it was love at first sight. 😂
