Finding Penny Items at Dollar General 2023

First, it’s important to understand what “penny items” are. These are items that Dollar General has decided to discontinue or clear out of their inventory. These penny items suppose to be pulled, but sometimes they are not. Additionally, penny items are not marked as such, so you’ll need to know how to identify them. NEVER go into the store asking where are they. It’s a secret, hidden gem. Remember they are suppose to be pull the penny items off the sales floor.

How Can You Find Out What Items are a Penny?

Join penny item groups. There are groups on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram that focus on sharing information about penny items at Dollar General. These groups can be a great resource for finding out about deals and discounts at your local store. Members of these groups often share information about specific products. Often, people show photos of what they found for a penny. This is very helpful since visuals are very important in finding these treasured penny items. Joining one of these groups can help you stay up-to-date on the latest deals.

Here are 7 More Ways You can Find Penny Items At Dollar General.

Check for hidden items. Sometimes, penny items can be hidden behind other products on the shelf. Take your time and carefully search through each section of the store to find them. When it comes to finding great deals and penny items, I follow the advice of one of my favorite Youtubers “Look High, Look Low.” You can often find penny items in plain sight within the store.

Look for seasonal items. Dollar General often marks down seasonal items like Halloween and Christmas decorations after the holiday is over, so keep an eye out for these items on clearance. Most of their seasonal items will turn a penny. There is a list that the managers get each week on what need to be pulled off the shelf (penny list). Some stores do not pull so if the product is still on the shelf, you can buy for one cent!

You may be able to find great deals on seasonal items that you can save for next year. But don’t wait until everything turns a penny because you may miss out. If you really want a product and it’s already marked down, it’s best to buy it now. I was fortunate to find some products that were heavily discounted at 90% and I decided to buy them. I was worried the items would not be available when it dropped to a penny.

Don’t be afraid to take your time when you are using the DG App — it was designed especially for customers like you! Even if it takes you an hour or so, that’s perfectly fine. As a frugal shopper, I understand the need to take your time so that you make sure you find some penny treasures! I am not saying you have to stay in a store for an hour or more before you find penny items. But, I am saying take your time and really look.

Understand the penny item policy. The Dollar General policy states that if a penny item is on the shelf you have the right to have that item sold to you. It is very important to place all the penny items in your cart. You should not grab one product, take it to the register just to see if it rings up a penny then go get the rest. Using the Dollar General App will help you to know the exact price. If you see 0.00, 0.01 or see store for price, then it should ring up at the register for a penny. I had purchased candy for a penny in one store and really didn’t want the rest so I left the rest on the shelf. Once the manager knew the candy was a penny, she quickly took the rest off the shelf.

Be respectful. Remember that penny items are often clearance or discontinued items, so the inventory can be limited. People may feel that you are being greedy or a hoarder if you take all the penny items. You are not being a hoarder because once the penny items are discovered, it is the store associate’s job to remove them all. This is what they are suppose to do. Unfortunately, some managers will throw penny items in the trash. So even if you grab them all and buy for one cent, you can always share or donate.
