This is the kind of thing that really makes my day!

Last week I was perusing another forum when a gentleman asked about shaping steel into a bowl to make a ladle.  I shared what I knew, including the Steel Puck of Awesomeness that my father made for me, and the guy was very kind in his thanks.  End of story, right?!

Usually when you give advice about stuff on the internet, you never hear back about it.  Or if you do, it’s weeks or months down the road.

Imagine my surprise when JW posted a picture the very next day to show off the Steel Puck of Awesomeness that he made for himself?  Yea, just hours after talking about it, he actually made one and forged a dish on it!!

And if that wasn’t enough, as we were talking about hammers to use for shaping he steel, he mentioned how he didn’t want to buy an expensive doming or reppouse hammer for what would be rather limited use.  Could he make a hammer out of some car half-shaft that he had?

After the appropriate encouragement, he was off to his shop to tinker and posted this picture of his happy family of tools!

I have to say, I couldn’t be more proud.  JW showed initiative, which is a blessing, but also demonstrated great skill and a keen eye for design.  He saw what he needed to accomplish, dishing the steel, and came up with a way to make it happen.  And, be honest, isn’t his hammer is a real sight to behold?  Great lines, lots of attention to detail, wholly functional while also being pleasing to the eye.... you truly couldn’t ask for more.  That hammer is one of those tools that will be earning him accolades for years to come, and rightly so.

We can all learn from JW’s tale, and I hope we do.  Grip the reins firmly in your hands and get the job done!

10.4.20 — #Moralsupport #team and the last few #deck boards The building of this deck during the most significant industry-complications of my brief time in the #constructionworld – #COVID – has made difficult a scenario that I expected to be much simpler. Lifestyle design has been my aim in leaving hoops — more thought and design autonomy, more freedom of time and mind, more creativity... instead, it’s been grueling and mundane. Bad timing, mostly. All in all, I’m proud of how I’ve been handling these circumstances, which are new to even the most seasoned builders. Nonetheless, here I stand, having to work far too many days, and far too many long hours, to #builditright for my clients. It’s all part of #myMBA and if you know me at all, education rules here. I’ve little to complain about, really. I’ll tell you this, the loved ones in my life have helped offset these difficulties with their support, day in and day out, even though their own circumstances have made that difficult for them to do. In other words: my pregnant wife (and her father, aka Shim Jim) have been taking care of me more than I have been of her! That’s ludicrous. Time to finish these projects up and start #building #ourfamily together. Next project: outdoor composting toilet because we’re about to have THE WHOLE FAMILY HERE IN NC in the next few weeks haha. In my limited experience with renovation and remodeling a stairwell like this might be overlooked because it is out-of-the-way and it’s sexier to allocate resources to finished spaces. However, when you’re building out a space where the NYC DOB or DOH is involved you neglect to finish a space like this at the risk of failing an inspection. • Identify areas like this during the evaluation / estimation phase, educate your client on code requirements, and avoid the frustration of scrambling during / after a failed inspection to make things right. • How do we finish areas like this?
