coffee or tea?? (pt.2) ((actually it has v little to do with their drink orders i just had thoughts))
both ushijima and kita were instructed in how to traditionally prepare tea, and to this day, when they make tea, all of the steps are religiously followed and the tea is always japanese and very high quality - not really pretentiously so, they were both just taught the importance of quality when it comes to tea. they both have different brands that they are loyal to that they drank growing up, but when they get together for tea they will exceptionally drink the others' preferred brand. kita will also drink commercial tea if that's all that's available, like at a restaurant or at someone else's house, he's not such a stickler. however, if ushi doesn't have his tea setup, he also quite likes drinking fruit juice. i don’t know why he does, but this came to me in a vision~
iwaizumi is a green tea loyalist, hot or cold day or night, and oikawa tends to drink green tea as well, but he’ll get elaborate sugary coffee drinks when he’s out that iwa will pretend to be disgusted by (tooru offers him sips without saying anything and iwa accepts every time) (they both wrinkle their noses at super sweet matcha lattes tho)
kuroo drinks black coffee, no sugar - hot in the mornings, but any other time of day he prefers an iced americano. when he started drinking coffee during high school in cafes with friends he ordered black coffee just for the pun with his name and he hated it at first but didn’t want to admit that he only ordered it for a lame pun so he stuck with it and now he’s addicted and he can’t tell if he actually likes black coffee or if he’s tricked himself into not minding the bitterness
akaashi takes his coffee with a very sensible 2 creams and 2 sugars. for some reason everyone in the office thinks akaashi takes his coffee black, and always bring that back for him, so he stared keeping cream and sugar at his desk.
both kuroo and akaashi are the kind of people that need a cup of coffee (or several) before they’re functioning in the morning. they’ll both sit silently hunched over at the table cradling their mugs, and it kinda freaks bokuto out because they’re like zombie versions of his boyfriends. through trial and error he’s figured out kuroo will accept pre-coffee kisses with only minor grumbling but it’s best to give akaashi his space in the morning
without adults monitoring him, bokuto drinks hot chocolate every morning, even tho he's lactose intolerant. akaashi had been trying in vain to convince him to at the very least replace the milk with water, but when that didn't work he just started buying oat milk without saying anything, and that seems to have resolved the issue
kenma obviously has an energy drink addiction, mostly the original redbull, but kuroo bought him the watermelon flavour once because of the colour, and he didn’t hate it as much as he thought he would so now he’ll have one of those from time to time. the bin in his room is somehow always overflowing with empty cans, and more than a few people have expressed their concern but kenma can't for the life of him understand why they're so worried

000.
“I just can’t find any coffee shops that make good matcha lattes here” Sangyeon heard coming from the hallway. He had just come home from a long day of work when he heard the unfamiliar voice speak. His interest had suddenly peaked at the prospect of a new neighbor since his previous one left about two months ago which left the third floor of the building relatively quiet. He began rounding the corner when his eyes where the voice had come from.
You just moved into the older apartment complex after your job transferred you to the newest branch where you now have the role of lead executive manager. Finding your way around the big new city was easy, however finding a coffee shop that makes a matcha latte just how you liked it… Difficult. Your search for a good coffee shop began as soon as you landed. Coffee shop-hopping, that’s what your best friend on the phone said when you told her your troubles.
Making eye contact with your new neighbor, you whispered to your best friend who was on the other line about calling her back later.
“Hey” Sangyeon waved
“Oh hey! I’m your new neighbor I guess” You waved back
“I’m Sangyeon! Welcome to the neighborhood!”
“Y/n, thanks”
That was it, that was the only interaction Sangyeon had with you. Oddly enough this short interaction fueled his desire to make you his best matcha latte… Erm, well after he learned how to make them.
001.
“Wait, so there's two grades of matcha?” He thought out loud, there are two grades of matcha, ceremonial grade matcha and culinary grade matcha.
“Ceremonial grade matcha is used in Japanese tea ceremonies and culinary grade matcha is used for coffee and baking” Sangyeon jotted down in his notebook. The poor boy had 10 different tabs opened on his laptop.
“Alright, so next step is to buy some matcha”
The next following days Sangyeon spent researching the best tea houses to visit and inquired about their matcha tea powders. After hours of research, Sangyeon settled on ‘Lucid Dream Tea House’  , the city's most highly rated tea house. Upon arrival, he noticed the delicately decorated interior. High ceilings with floor to ceiling windows, brick walls, dainty fairy lights and wooden countertops with mismatched wooden stools.
“Hi, welcome to Lucid Dream Tea House! How can I help you?” The kind barista greeted him.
“Hey, thanks! I was actually looking for some matcha powder, do you sell that here?”
“We do indeed, would you want to try some?”
Sangyeon nodded as the barista walked over to the bar and prepared a matcha flight. The barista began by soaking the matcha whisk while sifting some matcha powder into 3 different cups. The barista then poured a small amount of hot water into each cup before one by one whisking.
“Alrighty, so the first cup here is called the Matcha Sunrise which has a base of our culinary grade matcha from Shizuoka prefecture with milk and a fresh mango puree” The barista explained while handing the cup over to Sangyeon. The latte has a slight bitterness from the matcha that is cut with the tartness of the mango puree.
“Next, we have just our classic Matcha Latte sweetened with a simple syrup infused with vanilla bean from Madagascar” The barista explained, the latte was a perfect balance of sweet and bitter. Sangyeon nodded, pointing out the unique flavor of the vanilla bean.
“These are delicious! Before I get to the last one, I would love to buy some matcha powder to make some lattes at home”
“That’s really great to hear! I’ll make sure to send you home with our signature matcha powder” The barista smiled.
“Okay, our last and final latte is a bit of an experiment for us I would admit, so it doesn’t quite have a name yet. This latte is again our signature matcha powder with milk and a sweetened black sesame paste” The latte was delicious and had a slight nutty flavor from the sesame paste.
Sangyeon sat at the bar contemplating which latte he wanted to recreate and after some deep thought, he decided to start with the classic latte. It required very minimal ingredients and was rather simple. Once he mastered that, he could move onto more complex drinks. Meanwhile the barista went to wash the cups and retrieve a can of matcha powder for Sangyeon to purchase.
After the barista returned with the matcha, Sangyeon stood up to follow the barista to the register. “Have you decided which latte you’d like to recreate?” The barista gently questioned.
“Yes, I actually have! I want to start with something simple, so the classic matcha latte you made seemed perfect!”
“Oh wonderful! Just a quick tip though, as you are just starting out, you don’t actually need to buy madagascar vanilla. It’s actually quite expensive, so just a simple vanilla extract from the supermarket will do the trick”
“Thank you” Sangyeon bowed as he finished paying.
002.
“Okay so, first step is to soak the matcha whisk in hot water, done. Next heat up some milk in the milk frother, done” Sangyeon spoke to himself while he prepared the vanilla infused simple syrup. Taking the barista's advice, he went for the cheaper vanilla extract. The simple syrup was just equal parts water to sugar with a splash of vanilla.
“Now we take out the whisk and sift some matcha into a bowl” He began taking a mini scoop of the matcha and delicately sifted it into a small bowl and poured some hot water over and began whisking.
“Last step, pour the frothy milk into a cup with a bit of simple syrup and then pour the matcha on top”
Before rewarding himself with his hard work, Sangyeon began cleaning his work station. Cleaning up his little mess from the milk splatters on the counter top and a mini matcha explosion from accidently sneezing when he sniffed the matcha.
“Let’s hope this tastes good” Sangyeon said to himself before going in to take a sip. His face contorted, bitter. Too bitter.
003.
“The cup I made last time was way too bitter,” Sangyeon noted as he began researching on his laptop. Apparently the bitterness was due to the water being too hot, the matcha was required to be heated at a certain temperature.
Taking what he learned from many failed attempts, he went back to the kitchen to heat up some milk in the frother once again before lowering the temperature for the boiled water. This time, he made sure not to sneeze again because this matcha powder isn’t cheap…
Using the leftover vanilla simple syrup, he mixed the matcha and gave it a quick taste….
004.
While practicing his matcha latte making skills, Sangyeon made an effort to pay attention to when you left for the office every morning. 7:30 am, that was the time you always left which meant he would have to wake up at least an hour before to prepare everything. Honestly waking up at 6:30 wasn’t too bad considering he used to wake up earlier for his previous job. Now that he worked a less strenuous job that didn’t require him to be at the office until 10 am meant he had ample time.
The next morning, Sangyeon woke up 15 minutes before his alarm that was set at 6:30. He was so excited to surprise you that he rushed to get ready. Once he entered his kitchen, he began laying out his tools. Milk frother, matcha whisk, sifter, cups, milk, matcha powder and the second batch of vanilla simple syrup he made the night before.
Pouring the milk into the frother and soaking the matcha whisk, Sangyeon began placing a small heaping scoop of matcha and sifted the matcha into the small cup below. He poured over some hot water and took the whisk from the water and started to gently whisk while the milk was heating up. After the matcha was slightly foamy, he poured a bit of the simple syrup into another tall glass cup before pouring in the frothed milk. He then took the matcha he whisked and poured it over the milk with the back of a spoon to not splash the matcha.
Sangyeon checked the time “7:15” it read, meaning he had 15 minutes before you left to drop the latte off at your door. Quickly, he jotted down a short note on the back of an old receipt and headed to your door. Calming down his breathing, he placed the drink onto your door mat leaving the note next to it and knocked on your door. He sprinted back to his apartment, watching through the peephole he saw your face light up with a smile. Seeing your eyes light up taking a sip made him smile.
005.
“I’m telling you! Someone in my building keeps dropping off these amazing matcha lattes for me! I don’t know who it is” You spoke on the phone, you had just left the apartment complex before hopping onto the train with said latte in hand. The note attached to the latte read “Hope you’ve been enjoying these lattes! They’re so matcha fun to make” You smiled, shoving the note into your pocket.
From the other side of the door sat Sangyeon on the floor giddy with excitement. Now that he knows you’re enjoying his lattes, the next step was to upgrade the notes. He had been scribbling notes onto old receipts and he knew that you deserved better. Sangyeon turned to get ready and headed out to the nearest stationary store. There, he picked up some memo pads and nice pens. He picked up a variety pack of fruit memo pads and a pack of nice gel pens.
The next morning, Sangyeon woke up a little later than usual, 6:45 am which meant he only had half an hour to prepare everything. Sangyeon quickly got ready and rushed into the kitchen to soak the matcha whisk while heating up some water. Surprisingly, everything went well considering the limited time. As soon as he finished garnishing the latte with some matcha powder, he took a memo sheet from the stack he bought yesterday and jotted down a quick note.
“Have a great day ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ ” the note read, however little did he know, you were behind the door leaving a few minutes early. Your boss had to call out suddenly which left you with more work than you could manage. As soon as you opened your door, you were met with Sangyeon. His eyes slowly widened as he realized the situation.
He abruptly shoved the latte (with a lid of course) into your hand and quickly turned around with the note dropping from his hands. He was caught. Sangyeon was surprised when you knocked on his door with a sheepish smile.
“H-hey neighbor” You began holding tightly onto the cup so as to not drop it from nervousness.
“Hi, I’m sorry if you thought someone else was making you lattes” Sangyeon sighed, not looking into your eyes.
“Oh, no, these are delicious! I was wondering who made these, so I’m really glad I found out it was you”
“Really? I’m glad you like them! I can always stop if you want, I didn’t want to overstep your boundaries”
You smiled, your neighbor was this shy, incredibly talented and handsome man, yet he was quite modest which made him all the more adorable. You stood there smiling at him, but it was your turn to be shocked as the time passed.
“Shoot, I’m so sorry, I really need to leave now. Gosh, work got really busy. Will I see you later?” You hurriedly sputtered out as you headed towards the stairs, turning to hear his response.
“Yeah, no worries! Get to work safely”
006.
It slowly became a tradition that Sangyeon would make you a custom matcha latte every morning adorned with latte art and a sprinkle of matcha. You woke up every morning expecting cute latte art and honestly, you were never disappointed. The notes slowly became sweeter until one day the words scribbled shocked you.
“Meet me at Lucid Dream Tea House tonight at 6, I want to ask you something” the note read, your heart began beating outside of your chest. Did your neighbor just as you out? Unfortunately for you, work came first, so you sat through a long meeting… Which could have been an email that dragged on longer than expected. However, luckily for you, the tea house was just a block down from your office.
Once you arrived, your eyes met. It was Sangyeon, he sat at the table near the large windows with what looks like another latte? He looked handsome with his hair slicked back, he was dressed casually in a sweatshirt and jeans. It was a simple look, but something about it made your heart tingle. Maybe it was the specs or the hair? Or maybe it was him.
“You’re here” Sangyeon beamed, his smile was gorgeous, almost as gorgeous as his face.
“I am, thank you for inviting me”
“It’s no problem, I actually brought you here so I could as you something”
“S-sure” You shifted uncomfortably in your chair, the worry in your eyes evident as your lips pressed into a thin line.
“Well, now that you know it was me making you these lattes” he gestures to the latte in your hand
“I– I uh, well, I was uh” Sangyeon struggled to get a coherent sentence out as he cleared his throat.
“Wou– would you like to go out sometime?”
“M– me?” You pointed to yourself, the shock was evident in your face as you sat back in your seat.
“You seem shocked, did I say something wrong? I didn’t make you uncomfortable, did I?”
“No, not at all! You just took me off guard, I wasn’t expecting you to return the feelings. That’s all”
It was his turn to be shocked, it completely shook his world that his neighbor, the one he’s been making lattes for actually returned his feelings? The endless trips to various tea houses, the hours of research and many failed lattes made it all worth it. You were worth it.
“We’re the perfect matcha, don’t you think?” You giggled at your own pun.
“Absolutely” Sangyeon smiled, he reached across the table to take your hand in his.

Went plant shopping yesterday and-
Tumblr media
😂💛☀️
Instant thought: Farmer's market AU
Goshiki's a florist and has a little plant stall. He sells lots of plants, hydrangeas, japanese maple, and bamboo. Primarily focuses on flowers. Most people come for his flowering bonsai trees. He also has tea leaves available, matcha, gyokuro, sencha, and others.
Tendou still makes chocolate but also several other sweets. He always has a new flavor every two weeks. Some people travel far for his goodies, like that cute blonde teacher who always comes and buys out all his spicy chocolates.
Ushijima runs a farm, are you surprised? He has a bunch of animals but at the market, he sells fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and jerky. Sometimes he brings fish and fermented foods. His kimchi and pickled daikons are amazing.
Kawanishi has a saké stall, he's known for his plethora of different flavors, yuzu, apple, peach, raspberry, and pear. He actually makes the best plum saké in Miyagi and has been slowly introducing mead to his customers.
Semi is that musician always playing close to the market, he's a staple at this point and it's a great way for him to get his music out there and make connections. The guys all help by talking about Semi's music and encouraging people to book Semi for events.
Shirabu is a papermaker, it's a family business, but he adds his own twist by folding origami animals and boxes. He also makes interesting paper color combinations and personalized stamps. He is known for his custom bookbinding.
Hayato is the local woodworker, it's also his family's business and has been for years, but something about his furniture is just beyond beautiful. He specializes in making intricate carvings and secret compartments.
Reon has a bakery, donuts and hand pies are his focus, but he makes several other baked goodies and even jam. His goods are always made with ingredients from local folks. He collaborates with Tendou to make chocolate bread, it's a huge hit. I need this. Let me have this.

This might be basic but hey, i be basic everyday! Does Sugar have any favorite things like what kinds of drinks she likes, like is she a matcha latte or chai or super duper sweet stuff from her favorite cafes??? Is she more sugary than savory, does Joel ever surprise her with any favorites when he visists her little office????
This may be a little ask for future drawing reference if you know what i mean??? 🤭✨
Tumblr media
You SPOIL me! I am still so in awe of your drawing, it really made my week! Thank you so much again!
This is not a basic question at all, and you by all means are not basic, either! Sugar is someone who drinks things like coffee out of necessity, not for enjoyment. She does prefer Matcha over Coffee, but her one weakness? Iced Tea. Austin is hot, and she would rather drink something refreshing if she's not drinking water.
For treats and snacks, Sugar is a big fan of the little Japanese bakery that is down the street from the office. She normally gets a melon pan (which kind of looks like concha but the texture is a bit different) and will buy a few to put in her desk drawer because the Millers will always stop by and ask her about it, and will always leave her office with one of them in their hands.
I also mentioned that Joel had learned how to cook in his free time with Ellie - at this point of the story, Sugar has had her fair share of Joel's creations, her favorite being his empanadas - he worked for months perfecting the crust, and he totally experiments with different fillings! (her favorite is chorizo with potato!) Joel will knock on her office door, a little basket full of his empanadas of the week all warm and steamy for her, ready to eat. He will hand it to her as he kisses the top of her head, giving her a little wink as he leaves.

July 17 - Fulbright Center and Aboriginal Museum
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(You can click on the pictures to enlarge them and see the whole image)
I decided today to go to a local bakery for breakfast instead of breakfast at the hotel. I wanted to try the pineapple cake that is known in Taiwan. I also got a croissant, red bean and matcha pastry, and chocolate mochi. My favorite thing was the chocolate mochi. Then we headed out to our first excursion, which was the Fulbright Center. The Fulbright program is funded by the US government, and its aim is to give scholarships to students or professors to go to different countries, whether to learn/teach a language or even just to do research or go to school somewhere else. We were given presentations from different people there, and then they gave us snacks, drinks, and lunch. The Taiwanese snacks were pretty good, but the asparagus juice was a little challenging. After lunch, we met up with Peter and went to the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines. Before the Chinese immigrated to Taiwan, and before other settlers came here (Dutch, Spanish, Japanese), there were native aboriginals here for thousands of years. I got to see many indigenous artifacts and learn more about their ways. After we left the museum, Peter decided to take us to a popular boba tea chain and buy all of us tea. I got sweet oolong tea with boba and coconut jelly, and it tasted very good. Finally, some of us in the group went on a bar crawl in the evening. There were some other people in our bar crawl group. I talked to guys from London, Manchester, Chicago, and Auckland.
Academic Reflection:
The first presenter at the Fulbright Center taught us that the program was signed into law by Harry Truman. I had no idea that we had a program like this for that long. He also said that the scholarship covers airfare, health insurance, etc. and you receive a stipend. I found it really interesting and important that the board of the program in Taiwan has equal representation from Americans and Taiwanese. I was surprised at the whole list of programs they had for English only undergraduates. The new semi-conductor one sounded cool.
Something from the reading that Peter also taught us right when we got to the museum was that the indigenous languages are from the Austronesian family, which also includes the Philippines, Malaysia, Madagascar, New Zealand, and Hawaii. This knowledge gave me a better understanding of who these people were as I perused the museum. The reading also said that for thousands of years, Taiwan wasn’t known much by ancient imperial China. This is shocking to me, given how close Taiwan is to China and that it is now called the Republic of China. But seeing everything in the museum affirmed this idea that the indigenous people were undiscovered and left alone for a long time.

Week 5: Day off in Kyoto
Howdy y'all, it me Connor back after another week of cramming about cars. This was the beginning of finals and I have been booked so this might be a shorter blog.
I had my Japanese written final on Friday, it had both a written and oral section. In addition I also had to give a full presentation on my experience within Japan. I am exceptionally proud with how far I have come in the language but after that final I realized that if I want to continue learning I have a long road ahead of me. I mean after a month of learning for 3 hours a day I can just barely communicate for daily needs and know the bare minimum of reading. That being said I do not want to give up. Studying took up a large amount of my time this week as a have another huge engineering report and presentation to give next week so this blog might be a bit shorter.
Speaking of engineering though we finally got our groups for our final projects and I have spent long evenings researching. I luckily got my first choice for my research topic being Materials and Production of a Modern Vehicle. The sub-topic I chose was the interior of cars. I am excited to present but the report is definitely time consuming. But now I can talk about all the fun stuff I did.
Tumblr media
This is a Picture of me at the Denso Factory. Denso makes a massive variety of technology, although they are mostly known for their speedometers. They are an industrial giant and produce so much more technology. The tour here was very cool and it was the one trip we went on this week for the NUSIP program. I will say the only downside is that we couldn't buy their uniforms which were these super cool powder blue jumpsuits.
Tumblr media
My other mid-week adventure was another baseball game for the trip. This time the Dragons were playing the Hanshin Tigers. My favorite player Takahashi was pitching again and the Dragons won 3-0. I went to this game because some of my weekend plans got canceled due to a giant storm that was working its way south through Japan. I went alone but had a wonderful time.
GO DRAGONS!!!!!
THIS IS WHERE I WOULD PUT MY MOUNT FUJI PICTURE.
IF I HAD ONE.
Sadly the trip that got canceled was to Mount Fuji. Numerous times throughout this trip we have visited Mount Fuji viewing sites where you are supposed to be able to view the top of the mountain but it has always been too cloudy. This most recent Saturday, me and 4 other people were planning on hiking to the top, I bought hiking boots and everything, but sadly the Friday morning before we left there was a massive storm passing through so we had to cancel :( I was so excited to get a picture at the top.
The storm however did not stop my trip to Kyoto.
Tumblr media
We boarded the Shinkansen at 7 am Sunday morning prepped for a weekend of fun (We didn't have class Monday). Kyoto was already my favorite place in Japan from the last time we went and I was so excited to go back. The train from Nagoya to Kyoto only took about 30 minutes. It is so fast and the bento boxes you can get on it are so cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These were taken in the Bamboo forest in Kyoto, the views were stunning and it was so serene. There were a few too many tourists as you had to walk through a shopping district to get here but it was amazing nevertheless.
Tumblr media
This is a photo of me infront of the imperial castle. The grounds were massive and it took us 2.5 hours of just walking to see all of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the last things I did in Kyoto was this traditional tea ceremony. We ate sweets and made our own matcha. I put a bit too much powder into mine so it was quite thick but still delicious. The sweet was made with seaweed gelatin and yuzu peel and was very good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This weekend I also went to two different festivals. On the left was the Yoiyoiyoiyama (I think there might be one more Yoi) in Kyoto. There were dozens of floats and street vendors and the streets were closed down. I even got to climb onto a float. On the right is the Nagoya Port Festival. This was held at (Unsurprisingly) Nagoya's main port. There were fireworks and games and I ate a ridiculous amount of food there.
Speaking of food time for: WEEKLY FOOD PICTURES!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these photos were taken in Kyoto. On the left is Gyukastsu, a pork fried steak restaurant. It was excellent I ordered the sirloin and a matcha beer. Everything tasted amazing and I would highly recommend to anyone who visits. On the right are 3 types of Taiyaki, a traditional Japanese festival pastry. From left to right they are filled with green-tea cream, red bean paste, and egg custard. These were fresh made and delicious.
Tumblr media
Lastly I got some ramen in Nagoya. I was out shopping for the last couple gifts I wanted to get for my friends and family and I found this cute little ramen bar. This was possibly the spiciest dish I got while in Japan and the meat was delicious.
Sorry if this blog is a bit brief but I got lots of work to get back to.
Until next time, さようなら, また 来週

Elliott's big adventure in Japan, day 2 - short(ish) version because I am drunk and tired 🍶✨️
👺Went to the kabuki theatre!!!!!! We saw two plays, a humorous one and a traditional epic dance one, with a super nice guide (thank you Kazui-san! and thanks again for the recommendation Shin!) The theater was so pretty! We even bought a bento box to eat during intermission! (if you've followed me for a while, you know how much I like kabuki, and I was really looking forward to this!)
Tumblr media
🍵Drank proper matcha with a wagashi pastry!! In a very beautiful posh teahouse next to a rooftop Japanese garden. It was raining, it was so so pretty. The tea was slightly bitter and very tasty.
Tumblr media
👘Went to the theatre wearing yukatas; a nice staff lady at the theatre fixed our obi belt knots and she was impressed when we said we made the knots ourselves XD
Tumblr media
⛩️Went to a very nice shintô shrine and received my first omamori charm! (for shrine and temple items, it is polite to say "receive" rather than "purchase"or "buy")
Tumblr media
🎏Also first gachapon!! It's the kabuki theatre's little cat mascot, that has the colors of the traditional kabuki curtain (red black and green)

🗼Tokyo Tower!! You know, the Japanese knockoff Eiffel tower. I ate some tokayaki at a nearby food stall and burned my tongue like every time I eat takoyaki.
🏯Another Buddhist temple, we entered from the back so I thought it was small but NOOOOOO it was fucking GIGANTIC and had ROWS upon ROWS of Jiso statues (Buddhist deity dedicated to protecting young children, they are super cute and have little red aprons and winter hats and wind mills)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
👹Went to another Buddhist temple for Bon Odori! It is a celebration for the dead. Lots and lots of people were wearing yukatas and dancing in a circle around a stage with fun music, and tons of tiny food stalls (I bought a whole-ass fish on a skewer), and I ordered food by myself !!! (and I was so happy I completed the transaction in pseudo-Japanese that I fucking forgot to take the food. Watashi wa baka desu). And I complimented a lady on her cute kimono and hairdye all by myself! ("Excuse me... Kimono pretty! Sorry I don't speak Japanese. -points at hair- pretty! Thank you very much! Goodbye!" -runs away-)
🤗We sat at a table and Aime struck up a conversation with some locals and they even bought us a drink, and Aime was so so nice and translated things to French so I could follow the conversation and chime in too. Japanese people are super nice when they find tourists that speak Japanese ❤️

Aime-chan daisuki!!! Nihon daisuki!!!! ❤️ 🤗

Amy will go back to New Zealand in 2 weeks. In the afternoon, I do accompany her to the jewelry company to clean up her wedding rings, because her second marriage bought a wedding ring in Taiwan, not New Zealand, you know ?All Asians like to buy exquisite goods back to their country, because it is really good, and you can get a very favorable price, ha! Then go for tea time - matcha coffee shop from Japan, now delicious Japanese matcha specialty store in every city, I really like it so very much! Lan~*

!!! YOU DANCED I am so fucking proud of you! Hell yeah!
Thank you kiaxet! I definitely thought of the confidence boost you gave me several months ago when I got out there! It was by no means very good, but I did it!
Hopefully I can loosen up a bit more next time I attend a wedding. But bestie and I jammed out on the way back to her place and that was really fun! Specifically to all the "us" songs from college XD
Today we went to the farmers market and a Vietnamese restaurant! I tried matcha boba tea! It was definitely interesting but I liked it! I'm just not used to drinking sweet beverages so I didn't drink much but it was cool! My stir-fry was awesome too! And I didn't feel sick at all!
And then I drove to the Asian Food Market and got my lotus root! And some snacks because I always like trying new things!
Picture of what I got below the cut
And thank you again Kiaxet your encouragement and praise meant the world to me. You're a real sweetheart <3
Tumblr media
That's a purple yam sweet bun, I ate it for dessert it was really good!
I actually did buy the piggy red bean paste moon cake last year, but he's so cute I had to get him again.
Is taro and purple yam and ube the same thing? Idk but I will find our!
Also I've tried lots of different mochi but never banana so this will be exciting! I love banana flavored things.
I don't remember what the matcha pancake thing is called but I had to get something matcha, just in a new form I've never tried before.
And some miso soup powder.
Also there was a Japanese gift shop in there and they tempted me with pokemon plushies. I was this close to grabbing a wartortle or meowth or mew but they were $30. I paid for besties lunch today too thats enough spending for a while lol

1/2/2024
I had to be up early which sucked but I will admit the sky looked really pretty this morning.
Positive thing: I had a fun Discord call with a friend, and I managed to find the 逃げ恥 OST to buy and download on my phone.
Work actually wasn't that bad besides the whole walking up the stairs thing. My coworker was there but left me alone mostly, and I had leftover spaghetti that my roommate friends made which was a nice lunch.
I was rewatching the 逃げ恥 special today and I'd only watched it once before with Japanese subtitles, so this time I had English on and I was stunned at one particular line I missed. There's talk of naming a baby, and the parents decide to try and find a gender-neutral name, and reason that "they might change their gender when they're older." Maybe I just don't watch enough shows, but I feel like it was such a casually progressive line that was so deeply considerate in a way so many other shows aren't, especially ones that aren't particularly LGBT focused. I was really touched hearing it properly.
Besides that, I'm eager to have the soundtrack on my phone because I think the score is one of the other reasons I really enjoyed watching it. There's a track that uses an accordion (or something like it, I'm not good at discerning instruments) that is so cozy and light and I think it'll really brighten my morning commute.
Tumblr media
I almost forgot - I went to my usual boba place but they were unfortunately out of matcha. I got this fruit tea instead that I think had lychee, peach, and mango. It was really good but I was craving matcha so maybe I'll try again somewhere else tomorrow.

1. What is a Matcha Ceremony Set?
A matcha ceremony set is a collection of tools and accessories used to prepare and serve matcha in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The set typically includes a tea bowl, a bamboo whisk (also known as a chasen), a bamboo scoop (chashaku), and a tea caddy (natsume). These items are typically made of high-quality materials such as bamboo, ceramic, or lacquerware, and are designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Tumblr media
2. Components of a Matcha Ceremony Set
Here is a more detailed breakdown of the components that make up a typical matcha ceremony set:
Tea Bowl (Chawan)
The tea bowl, or chawan, is a ceramic bowl that is used to prepare and serve matcha. It is typically wider than a regular teacup and has a flat bottom and steep sides that allow the tea to be whisked and mixed without spilling.
Whisk (Chasen)
The bamboo whisk, or chasen, is used to mix and froth the matcha. It has a handle and a series of prongs that are used to whisk the tea into a frothy, creamy texture.
Scoop (Chashaku)
The bamboo scoop, or chashaku, is used to measure the correct amount of matcha powder to use in each serving. It is typically made from a single piece of bamboo and is designed to be both functional and beautiful.
Tea Caddy (Natsume)
The tea caddy, or natsume, is a small container used to store the matcha powder. It is typically made of lacquerware and is decorated with intricate designs or patterns.

3. History of Matcha Ceremony Sets
The origins of the Japanese tea ceremony can be traced back to the 9th century, when Buddhist monks brought tea from China to Japan. Over time, the ceremony evolved into a highly ritualized practice that emphasized mindfulness, simplicity, and respect for nature. The use of a matcha ceremony set became an essential part of this practice, as it allowed for precise measurements, careful preparation, and a beautiful presentation of the tea.

4. The Significance of Matcha in Japanese Culture
In Japanese culture, matcha is more than just a beverage. It is a symbol of hospitality, respect, and harmony. The tea ceremony itself is a way of connecting with others and with nature, and the use of a matcha ceremony set is a way of honoring tradition and craftsmanship.
5. How to Use a Matcha Ceremony Set
Using a matcha ceremony set requires a bit of practice and patience, but it can be rewarding.
Here are the basic steps to prepare matcha using a ceremony set:
Heat the water: Start by boiling fresh, filtered water and letting it cool for a few minutes until it reaches around 175°F to 180°F. This temperature is ideal for matcha, as it preserves the delicate flavors and aromas.
Prepare the bowl: Place the tea bowl on a flat surface and add a small amount of warm water to warm up the bowl. Discard the water and dry the bowl with a clean cloth.
Measure the matcha: Use the bamboo scoop to measure around 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into the tea caddy.
Add the water: Pour a small amount of the hot water into the tea bowl and whisk it vigorously with the bamboo whisk to create a smooth paste. This helps to dissolve the matcha powder and prevent lumps.
Whisk the tea: Add the rest of the hot water (around 2 to 3 ounces) to the tea bowl and use the bamboo whisk to whisk the tea vigorously in a back-and-forth motion until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
Serve the tea: Use the bamboo scoop to transfer the tea from the tea bowl to a teacup or small bowl, and enjoy!

6. Tips for a Successful Matcha Ceremony
Preparing matcha using a ceremony set can be a bit intimidating at first, but with a little practice and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful and memorable experience. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Use high-quality matcha: The quality of the matcha powder is crucial for the taste and texture of the tea. Look for a ceremonial-grade matcha that is fresh, vibrant, and free of any additives or fillers.
Use fresh, filtered water: The quality of the water can also affect the taste of the tea. Use fresh, filtered water that is free of any impurities or minerals that can affect the taste.
Pay attention to the temperature: The temperature of the water is important for bringing out the best flavors and aromas in the matcha. Use a thermometer or kettle with a temperature setting to ensure the water is at the right temperature.
Practice your whisking technique: Whisking the tea is an art form that takes practice and patience. Experiment with different whisking patterns and techniques to find what works best for you.
Be present and mindful: The tea ceremony is about more than just drinking tea. It is a way of connecting with others, nature, and yourself. Take the time to savor each sip of tea and appreciate the beauty of the moment.
7. Choosing the Right Matcha Ceremony Set
When choosing a matcha ceremony set, there are several factors to consider:
Material: Matcha ceremony sets can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, bamboo, and lacquerware. Choose a set that is made from high-quality materials that are durable and easy to clean.
Style: Matcha ceremony sets come in many different styles and designs, from traditional to modern. Choose a set that reflects your personal style and tastes.
Quality: Look for a set that is made by a reputable manufacturer and is designed for ceremonial use. Avoid sets that are cheaply made or are intended for decorative purposes only.

8. Maintaining Your Matcha Ceremony Set
To keep your matcha ceremony set in good condition, follow these tips:
Clean the set after each use: Rinse the tea bowl, whisk, scoop with warm water and dry them with a clean cloth. Do not use soap or detergent, as this can affect the taste of the tea.
Store the set properly
Keep your matcha ceremony set in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or moisture. Avoid storing it in airtight containers, as this can cause mold or mildew to develop.
Replace the set as needed: Over time, the whisk and tea bowl may become worn or damaged. Replace them as needed to ensure that your matcha ceremony set continues to perform well.
9. Conclusion
In conclusion, a matcha ceremony set is an essential tool for anyone who enjoys the art of matcha. It allows you to create a beautiful and authentic matcha experience, whether you are sharing it with friends or simply enjoying it on your own. As we near the 31st, I figured it was time for my annual tea retrospective. I spent 2021 with Chinese tea, and this past year was a year with Japanese tea.
2023 will be for Indian tea, which I am looking forward to exploring in depth.
Here are some things that I have learned this year:
Overall, I have a personal preference for the complexity of Chinese teas to the simplicity of Japanese tea, but I have had some pretty knockout teas this year.
I’ve learned to be gentle with my pour when it comes to steamed teas, which took me about a month to figure out why everything was coming out so bitter.
I’ve finally learned to distinguish umami in tea.
I feel like I am getting the very slightest sense of terroir. In general, I think my unrefined sense of taste and smell has come a long way since the beginning of 2021, but there’s a longer way to go yet.
I really just don’t enjoy cold brewed tea.
I have to be on probiotics when I’m drinking green tea every day LOL
The Aoi Seicha matcha was the first time I was able to sense the qi of a tea, which was very exciting
Some notes on just a few of my favorite teas this year (bolded above). I would put these three on a list of all-time favorite teas and would be more than happy to drink them on a regular basis.
Miyazaki Sabo Floral Hojicha: This is hands down the sweetest tasting tea I’ve ever had. It was made from stems harvested at a lower point on the tree from where the plant would typically have been cut, so there was a heavy concentration of the floral oils, and the roasting gave it a sort of caramelized flavor, like, literally this tea was so delicious.
Kajihara Tea Garden Izumi First Flush Black Tea: I think this solidified for me that I do really love lighter, fruitier black teas. There was a quality to this one though that I’d never tasted before and I don’t know how to describe, but I immediately regretted not buying more of it when I had the chance.
Matsumoto Cha-en Fig Wood Smoked Black Tea: This producer has a line of smoked teas using different woods, many of which were reclaimed from local whiskey barrels. I’d love to try more of them someday, and I’d definitely recommend this as an entry point to smoked teas, as it’s smoked for only a fraction of the time as traditional Lapsang Souchong and is much lighter as a result. It was a very smooth and forgiving tea, and the flavor lasted well over five steepings, the most of any tea I drank this year.
Some resources that I found useful:
GJ Tea, in particular their meet-the-farmer online events are a boon
Sono Organic Tea’s email newsletter is always informational
Yunomi life was my favorite vendor to order from
That’s about all I’ve got for now. I’ve enjoyed this year, and I am ready to take a break from green tea lololol. I think that next year I may move through Indian tea region by region, rather than category by category.
