Now, this band is a nine-piece brass rock band. But the sound is hard rock and comes straight to the heart! They played at a festival on the Isle of Wight in 1970. I picked this record from an op shop this morning for $1. There are few pops and cracks but they don’t detract from the listening experience too much. I really like this album and I particularly like that old favourite, “Liebestraum.”

There is a price sticker on the back for $5.95.

Thanks in large part to Motown Records, Detroit held the crown when it came to pop and R&B in the '60s. However, by the early 1970s, a serious contender emerged out of the City of Brotherly Love. In the late 1960s, Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Thom Bell and a host of others began crafting a unique brand of soul music that seamlessly blended lush orchestration, along with elements of funk and jazz. This would soon be known simply as Philly Soul. The musicians responsible for this sound were a group of more than 30 local veteran session musicians that would collectively become Mother Father Sister Brother, or MFSB. The ensemble played on hits by The Intruders, The Delfonics, Jerry "The Iceman" Butler, Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, The Stylistics and Detroit's own Spinners, just to name a few. In 1973, MFSB's eponymous debut album was released on Gamble & Huff's then-burgeoning Philadelphia International Records. Although it contained some killer jams, including covers of Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" and Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead", the album made little impact on the charts. That all changed later that same year with the release of Love Is The Message, their sophomore LP, and the first single, entitled "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)". The track, featuring girl group The Three Degrees, true to its title, epitomizes everything that makes the Philly Sound great; lush strings, piercing horns and an irresistible rhythm section. With all these ingredients, the song was destined for No. 1, which it achieved in April of 1974 for 2 weeks. "TSOP" earned MFSB a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance at the following year's ceremony. However, to a generation of music lovers, the show is forever associated as the theme to the iconic TV music series, Soul Train, created and hosted by the late, great Don Cornelius.
