Last night I dreamed that someone invented a new version of chess called Rookmeo and Juliet where two rooks are in love and trying to run away together. To achieve this they have to make it to the other side of the board, but these rooks don't have any visible signs to differenciate them from the rest, just a small mark in their base. Neither of the players knows what rook from the other side is in love with their rook, so they have to play a regular game of chess, fully aware that they might unknowingly kill the lover of their rook. If they kill it, the game keeps going, but their rook betrays them, switches sides and turns into a second queen for the other player. People wrote a ton of essays about the symbolism and metaphors of that version of chess and the creator didn't have the heart to tell them that he simply invented it because he thought Rookmeo was a great pun

Just today I got to see a chess book that I remember reading as a little kid. While it didn't give me a lifelong passion for chess, it did give me a lifelong passion for fantasy for its artwork.

The book is "Chess for Young Beginners" from 1975, and here's some of the artwork:

Like, this artwork goes hard. I especially appreciate the colour scheme for the black pieces, with its browns, bronzes, reds and oranges.

This artwork is amazing, evocative, exciting and dramatic. I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance - you can probably scrounge up a PDF of this thing with a bit of searching.

Hey so I was wondering if there was a predominant religion across the Saleste empire? There doesn't seem to be any mention of it, and this might be kind of nitpicky (you can tell me if it's too nitpicky) but it's odd that a chess piece would be referred to as a bishop if there's no real world equivalent for an actual bishop

Hello, anon. No, there is no predominant religion in the empire. The empire is a collection of many different cultures and races that have been adopted over the centuries. I didn’t feel I could create an over arching religion without giving it an extensive history and structure to acknowledge that, and to be quite frank, I didn’t want to. That’s not the main focus of Cantata and I didn’t think it had any bearing on the story I wanted to tell.

As to the second half of your ask, I do find it to be nitpicky; but more to the point, it’s selectively nitpicky. You zeroed in on the one word with religious connotations when I also mentioned the knight and king chess pieces, also words that don’t exist in Cantata vernacular. Saleste has a regis, not a king, and I have no equivalent for a knight in this game. This ask feels more triggered by that particular word, rather than an honest diligence for language accuracy.

I chose to include that hobby not just because it is a game many people are familiar with, but because I am a chess enthusiast. I collect chess sets. My late father worked for a company that pioneered the electronic chess sets in America. They housed the World Chess Hall of Fame in their headquarters, which I visited often. The fact that Jonah teaches the MC chess was a tribute to my father teaching me the game.

All that to say, I will not be changing the chess option. If that word displeases you, I would kindly suggest choosing one of the other 4 hobby options available to you. Thank you for understanding.
