If I had to pick an overall favorite though... definitely the entire Ralts line. Having a Gardevoir on my main team is MANDATORY no matter which game I'm playing, even if I have to wait for the postgame

pokespe reread: emerald chapter - closing thoughts! 🟢

i've finished emerald!! and with it comes the end of the era of the dexholders constantly meeting up with each other and interacting between generations 😔

we'll still get to see these guys again (other than yellow. sorry yellow. i hope they bring u back one day honey) but past this point it's gonna be a lot less overtly interconnected. which is fine! but it is a little sad :')

anyways, here's my thoughts on the chapter as a whole!

(i also wanna preface this with the fact that i realized near the beginning that as a kid i definitely never actually read this arc in its entirety, just the end part once gold and crystal show up 💀 so technically this wasn't a true reread. but yknow. anyways)

the first thing that i noticed is that this arc feels a lot more focused on the battles and gimmicks at first; it kinda takes a while for the story to really kick in, which did make the first bits of it a littleeee boring/bland for me personally. but thats ok

i think part of that is because of how emerald as a character is depicted. i love emerald, but he is a character where for most of the arc, we see him from an outside perspective, via other characters observing him and wondering about him rather than really getting to read his thoughts and learn about him as a person. this can make him feel kind of uninteresting in the beginning, but i dont think its a severe issue or anything.

i do also think that the way his backstory is revealed is a littleee clunky? like having ruby and sapphire just be like "we dont much about you so tell us all about yourself!" feels like kind of an obvious plot device to get emerald backstory and doesnt read very naturally. but i dont rlly care, esp since we then immediately go INTO his backstory which is very enjoyable to read through.

speaking of which, i love his dynamic with crystal so so much. i think it's really cute how the whole reason he became a dexholder was just because he wanted to train with her :)

and speaking of emerald's friends........ latios and latias YIPPEE. i love that they just like him for some reason and go around being his friends its cute as hell. and of course. latias. im not going to lie to you and say that human latias isnt cute as hell IT'S CUTE AS HELL OK. ALL OF ITS OUTFITS ARE ADORABLE AND I LOVE IT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. sorry...........

moving on, i reallyyyy love ruby and sapphire in this arc. their dialogue and just general characterization is. mwah. i love them trying to be friends with emerald and him just totally shutting them down LOL

i will say that ruby forgetting the climax of R&S is. kind of stupid and feels like a way to just artificially create more relationship drama between these two. i think that was mentioned/implied at the end of R&S but i forgot lol. anyways iirc i dont think this gets resolved until ORAS which is fucking insane. we'll see but considering that my memories of ORAS are not good, i feel like it's very likely that i'll end up just retconning this in my personal hc lol

ok DUDE. the shit with the blue orb was sooooo sick. i was so happy that they explored that a bit more bcuz the whole thing of the orbs corrupting anyone who touches them (and RUBY AND SAPPHIRE HAVING BOTH DONE THAT) was really fucking cool and i def thougt it could be touched on more.

i like how we learn about it more not just for the sake of it, but also it ends up being relevant because of archie. and we get to learn through it that there are permanent side effects no matter what, via sapphire's eyes apparently having a dim glow to them because of her contact w the blue orb? which um. is fucking sick

circling back to archie, him being guile is genuinely a cool twist and i didnt see it coming even though i have literally read this before. also him literally KILLING(?) maxie for another shot at life is genuinelyyyy fucking crazy. and i like how they tied in team galactic, it makes this feel at least a little connected to the upcoming chapter.

ok and now. something that's not at all relevant to the chapter as a whole but i have to talk about bcuz to middle school me this was the only thing that mattered about this arc

gold and silver in this arc make me sooooo fucking ill oh my lawrd. this shit is still just as crazy as it was in middle school WHAT ARE WE DOING RIGHT NOW

ok first of all. gold giving silver the ring (via very much Holding His Hand) and calling him his buddy. looking absolutely MURDEROUS after archie taps on the petrified silver. i love how this arc shows just how much gold cares about silver. crystal too ofc, but its less expected from gold due to how rocky their relationship was in the beginning. like that is his friend and if you touch him you will die. understand?

and then of course this moment oh my godddd bro. like him calling silver his buddy is just like aww theyre friends but then gold had to go and act as gay as possible about it. WHY ARE YOU FULL FACE BLUSHING OVER SILVER OVERHEARING YOU CALL HIM YOUR FRIEND! YOU ARE GAY!!!!!!!!!!

also i already said this in my initial post about this moment but like. its even gayer when you imagine what it looked like without gold's inner thoughts here, like silver tells him he heard and gold just blushes and looks all nervous/embarrassed. and then silver just continues talking. like hello.......

them getting to deal the final blow was fucking awesome. they didnt get to do a lot this arc since they were petrified with the others, but im glad that they were specifically highlighted here. getting to see them finally as officially part of the dexholders is so cool! esp since we dont get to see yellow past this point, i think this is a nice little mini sendoff to their character (for now)

seeing all the dexholders interact in general is just so fun and makes me so so happy. they're a family!!! they look out for each other!!! grahhhh

anyways. that's about all i have to say :) i've become a little busier so i dont know when i'll be starting diamond & pearl, but im very excited to since that means I GET TO SEE DPP AGAIN. MY CHILDREN.

its gonna be so polyamorous in this bitch i cant fucking wait. esp to expose anyone unfamiliar with pokespe or that specific chapter with the absolute canon polycule that is those three. oh my lordddd i miss them so much i cant wait.

YAYYYY i used to think about this all the time … i might wanna revamp these (since i barely know any pokemon from 7+) but off the top of my head

mario: solrock, espeon, simisear, clefable, probopass and breloom

luigi: lunatone, umbreon (✨), bellibolt, musharna, rotom and galvantula

i can imagine way more but for "main teams" that’s what comes to mind first… tbh i’d probably imagine mario and luigi being more like pokemon ranger types. like catch and release yknow. but still LOL. it also depends on whether you're thinking like a proper pokemon au or like regular super mario but pokemon happen to also be there.

i like espeon and shiny umbreon over flareon and shiny jolteon because even though the red / green and fire / thunder stone evolution thing with firebrand and thunderhand is way more obvious i like the sun/moon parallel mario and luigi have a lot… + in the context of super mario sunshine and luigi’s mansion dark moon espeon evolves during the day and psychic is super effective against poison and umbreon evolves at night and dark is super effective against ghost. also the red gem and blue/yellow highlights on them fit the colour scheme well enough for me LOL

though again these are all just the first ones that came to mind and there are a lot of fitting pokemon.. arcanine (M) and eelektross (L) could be fun. same with latios and latias (both cases where one is red and the other has a green shiny LMAO but i don't wanna push luigi's luck THAT much) or like pikachu and mimikyu .politoed for mario could also be cute...

it's cool too when you think about different games like greavard polterpup (rather than maybe how i was imagining shiny eevee / umbreon) or a ditto gooigi / ditto taking cappy's place in odyssey. (though i think you can effectively possess pokemon in the sv dlc now so...)

i imagine e gadd probably would have a bit of a problem with joltik eating the electricity in his labs and i think it’d be cute for him to ask luigi to lure them away with the thunderhand.. so even though he's not super fond of spiders (obviously) he'd end up with a few really affectionate joltik. in a similar vein i think it'd be really funny if in like the original luigi's mansion instead of fighting all of those boos with the silly pun names it's luigi having to catch like 50 gengar king boo released upon him. now it's HIM giving them the silly pun nicknames. it'd also be great to contrast with clefable because of all of those theories of gengar being its shadow but idk if luigi would really WANT to use a gengar yknow... especially if they were trying so so hard to kill him dead

i could also totally imagine him with a revaroom.. we know this guy loves his cars

in general i kind of just wanted Some Sense of a sun / moon theme and for mario to have a pokemon that evolves with fire stone and luigi to have one that evolves with a thunder stone.. there's a lot of fitting pokemon so i would have to put waayyyy more thought than i have into what i'd want for them if i were to stick to a definitive 6 for each

peach is a lot easier though. she has her aesthetic and sticks to it LOL. i'd probably give her like alcremie (ruby swirl with strawberry or love sweet), sylveon, shiinotic, amoongus, audino and togekiss

other good fits are like chatot, meloetta or mew (i think as a princess it'd be fair for her to have a mythical pokemon), jigglypuff, primarina, blissey .. i can imagine her having something like what professor oak does in the anime on castle grounds for pokemon she mario or luigi have caught (be it for research or not)

also though i definitely don't think he'd have it like caught i can imagine victini sort of following mario around the same way mew does ash

I have a weird bond with Latias and Latios. Becuase the only pokemon movie i ever had was their movie. And I watched it a LOT when I was a kid. And I always kind a wanted them,becuase of the movie and I thought they were kinda cute,but my brother made me feel like shit for liking them becuase they weren't 'cool' looking. So aside from being very hard to get originally,I obviously never got them.

And then Alpha/Omega came out and I got Alpha becuase I had Sapphire back then and Kyogre was my orca baby,and then you know Latias joins you willingly. Here is a pokemon I wanted for so long but that voice that sounded suspiciously like my brother in the back of my head made me bench it in my box immediately,becuase sorry sweetie you don't 'fit'. And then years went by and I transferred it to Home with the others and put it in Sword and I wa looking for a post game team for funsises and I was just like why not? Becuase of my brother who I don't even talk to anymore? So I put her in my party,play with her in camp and give her giant portions of curry and we go on a Dynamax Advneture and there is her brother waiting at the end and I'm just like 'Neat,won't be ya becuase we are left on 1 life but I can make my way back' but we do,me and the ai,and I catch him of course.....and he's green,not blue. But I have them both,10 years of never having the Legendaries who meant the most to me when I was a kid,and suddenly they are there and one is shiny,like it's congratulating me for whatever.

Wilbur with a Sandslash. Just because. Also an Absol.

Dream with a Reuniclus bc of the face and the colors.

Tubbo with an Espurr bc both are small and cute but terrifying.

Philza should have at least a Staraptor and a Corviknight. Also a Dusknoir to symbolize his connection with Death (Mumza) since Dusknoir guides souls to the afterlife.

Sapnap with a Magmar. Self explanatory.

Fundy with a Vulpix and Mienshao.

Ranboo with an Umbreon is a nice idea.

Quackity with a Golduck, Porigon 2 and Ludicolo. All of them look like ducks to me.

Skeppy with a Carbink and a Barbaracle.

Sam with a Watchog, Conkeldurr and a Garchomp. Sort of like an “intimidating warden vibes”.

Puffy with an Ampharos, Perrserker and Milktank.

Eret should have a Togekiss and a Latias and Foolish should have a Latios to symbolize their connection (Eternal Duo).

Purpled should have a Toxicroak and Mightyena (for mercenary work).

I see Ponk with a Tropius to kinda symbolize the lemon trees. Also a Weavile bc Ponk likes to steal a lot.

Antfrost with a Pyroar. (Velvet would also have a Pyroar)

Schlatt with a Persian bc he gives off Giovanni vibes. Also a Tauros or Bouffalant.

Punz with a Lycanrock (day) and Ninjask.

Hannah with literally every flower themed Pokemon. In this case Florges, Roserade and Vileplume.

Slimecicle should also have a Sligoo friend!

this cute lil oshawott who couldn't stand on his own so i had to hold his hand (im gonna wash him cuz im pretty sure my cat or dog used to play with him)

rayquaza lugia and mega latios (or latias i can't tell the difference) i got from mcdonalds back when their happy meal toys were cool. latios had a little thing you put in its mouth and then it would shoot it but idk where it is

I have created a new way of making a pokemon team that is so emotionally excruciating! 

Anyway whats your pokemon team and top Legendary/Mythic based SOLELY on how much you love them?

Ok, so. The final six is important but this is a process. It will take time, and it will be emotionally draining.

But most importantly as you do it remember- this is about love. This is about favoritism. Fuck viability. Fuck team comp. Fuck cuteness. Fuck cool factor. Fuck better designs. None of that superficial stuff. 

Who do you LOVE with your WHOLE ENTIRE HEART? Who’s your buddy? Your friend? Your pokemon soulmate? Who lives in your heart rent free? Who do you stan beyond all reason? Who, when it gets down to brass tacks, you have no argument for liking them, other than you just LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

Its a subtle distinction but it’s important. Hold onto that, cause that’s the true decider.

For regular ‘mons  starters, alternate region types, and alternate forms are allowed (Like the two forms of wishiwashi, and mega evolutions). No shinies and shiny consideration isn’t a factor. No gigantamax forms. All forms must be considered separately, if you love all three evolutions in a line each fight for individual spots, if you love all alt forms of a pokemon all fight for their own spot. so a final six could have three forms from one pokemon line if you feel all three forms beat out all other pokemon for you. (It could be all deerling/sawsbuck if you so choose)

For Mythics/Legendaries/Ultra Beasts Same rules for forms and shinys apply here. Being a surprisingly divisive categorization I’m just gonna list what I’m counting as everyone has differing opinions on this:

On to the process! But please remember to take breaks, if your doing it right it’ll be agony.

So the first step: Go to bulbapedia and look through every pokemon ever released. Transfer the pic of each one that speaks to you (love it, it’s cool, you just think it’s neat etc.) onto an MS paint canvas or any other art program. Make it big! Bring ‘em all in! Though put the legends and mythics off to the side for their own bracket. Then save that puppy.

Step two: The filtering process begins. Start a new layer or MS paint file and copy over the higher tier mons from the previous page. Save when done with your new list. You will be doing this quite a few times, so don’t worry about keeping the bar low; general like to more specifically your favs, the good favs to the really good favs, etc.

Do this for the regular mons on one side, and the Mythics/Legendaries/Ultra Beast on the other

Step three: Keep repeating step two, raising the bar each time. Remember! Prioritise personal connection!

Step nine: Go cry w some ice cream and a blanket, I know this was hard. But hey! You have definitive favs now :)

Step four: As you get closer to the end, around the final 30, it’ll start getting harder and you will likely have to start ranking ‘mons for your own clarity. Seperate two from the pile and ask yourself, which of these two bois do I truly love more? 

Step five: Finalize the top six ‘mons and one Mythic/Legendary

Step six: Sit and stew in your guilt and regret for at least a day

Step seven: Change your top six and top mythic/legendary to it's true finalized form to elevate your regrets, thus creating your True final. You may need to do this a few times to achieve true peace with your choices, if you have any doubt, you're not done yet.

Step eight: once peace is achieved, post it (either w a screenshot of the team builder or lining up your mons pics, or type em out if your on mobile idk)

Pokemon Quartz

I have a confession to make.

I fucking love Pokemon Quartz.

Okay, context. Pokemon Quartz is an infamous Romhack of Pokemon Ruby, finished in 2006 by a young Spanish developer going by Baro. It was possibly the first completed romhack that completely replaced the entire set of the available 386 Pokemon with a set of newly designed Fakemon, and while lots of the replacements are pretty obvious analogues, there are some pretty interesting designs and the sheer effort required to do this solo as a teenager is something to behold.

(Look at Lileep, it’s a dodo now! I think its cute.)

The hack shows it age pretty well these days, with the sheer development made in GBA hacking especially in the last couple of years obviously showing it up- obviously something like Clover or Radical Red is going to make Quartz look ancient, and limitations in available tools are pretty obvious if you know where to look. The game’s region, Corna, is blatantly just Hoenn with some modified route themes, and its pretty clear that the designs for each Pokemon are limited to the replaced mon’s colour palette (as with Torido above).

(The map is kinda pretty though imo)

Quartz is infamous for a few reasons ultimately linked to the developer’s youth. For one, the dialogue tends to be a mix of poor English and weird humour and plenty of cursing, along with some jokes that don’t really fly these days. (To Baro’s credit, the writing and English does get better as the hack progresses.) The plot is utterly nonsensical as a result of shoehorning the Electric themed Band Ambar as villains into vanilla Ruby’s story, and involving the very 00s teenage idea of CHAOS vs ORDER and the pseudophilosophical musings that go along with it. Also like some of the designs are extremely ugly, to be frank. Lots of people are aware of Babos, the Skitty replacement, but that’s only really scratching the surface- the Llamayama line (aka Numel) and Berchi line (Clamperl) are pretty awful if you ask me.

I first encountered Pokemon Quartz as part of a bootleg multi-game cartridge picked up in my time living in Kuala Lumpur. The version of the hack on that cart was either very early or just broken, since none of the doors in Golden Island or the nearby Broke Cave (Dewford Island/Granite Cave) would actually let me in and therefore I couldn’t progress especially far. (I understand there was another broken ROM running around the internet that just had legendaries and Master Balls running around the first few routes, for some reason,). My trying to find a walkthrough or a fix led me to one Let’s Play of the hack by Zorak, which I suspect considering his association with fellow early LPer Chorocojo is the reason a fair few people are aware of Quartz at all. While I absolutely wouldn’t recommend reading that LP these days- its very late 00s, enjoys a certain R-word way too much, and to his credit Zorak has a comment on the archive stating that he considers it “immature and severely unfunny!”, but it was the only way for me to consume the remainder of the game at the time, having not figured out emulators at that point. I could go on for a long time about those early Lets Plays, but I’ll save that for another day.

Okay but why do I like this game then? Well, aside from tickling my nostalgia bone something fierce, there’s a lot of cool things in the hack that make it stand out. While the lore behind the main legendary Pokemon is pretty bad and some of their designs are godawful, the Braille puzzles from Ruby have been converted into an entire original runic alphabet and is expanded to be present in the encounter events for Kaomare and Karendi (Kyogre and Jirachi). I had a lot of fun translating all of the script by hand, even if the actual text is a bit edgy. Speaking of Karendi, the game has a very JRPG style item chain sidequest to get to the encounter, which is pretty fun and something that to my recollection hasn’t been seen since. It has some little ideas in the dex that took Game Freak years to try, such as an evolving legendary (Ordkip->Tanord, replacing Latias and Latios) and the hack’s replacement for the Kanto starters having a 4th evolution (replacing the legendary beasts in the dex). The player is actually offered a second starter from the trio replacing the Johto starters late in the game at Muddy Island (Pacifidlog), which while a bit useless at that point is still something that took GF until X and Y to try. (Emerald doesn’t count imo)

I can’t really explain beyond that why I love Quartz so much, but it’s the type of attachment that doesn’t really make sense and can’t really be explained. With that in mind, please believe me when I say never play Pokemon Quartz.

Most of the Pokemon are reskins of the original mon without changing the stats or learnset, and some of the ones that are make zero sense (As an example, the Water starter gets Aeroblast of all things, but only if you overlevel it in the second stage). The 3rd Gym leader’s ace, an overleveled Groundoe (Sandslash), has 4 ground moves, so any Flying type beats it outright, except 2 of those moves are Earthquake and Fissure, so if you don’t have a bird you are S.O.L. . The 4thleader has an absurdly overpowered ace in the form of Freech, one of the few mons to be completely overhauled, being the Milotic equivalent except its Dragon/Ice with overpowering STAB moves and Speed Boost. Basically, the game balance is completely out of whack.

Instead give a look into Pokemon Ultra Quartz (I refuse to type Let’s go Blobbos more than once). Released in 2018 by the developers for the excellent if also problematic Clover, UQ fixes just about every issue with the game’s balance, expands the encounter tables to include many of the Quartz mons that were implemented but unobtainable, and re-enables missing features such as the Battle Tower, while leaving most of the rest of the Quartz experience untouched- in this sense, I’d argue it’s the superior Quartz experience. It does still have issues- the labyrinthine route and cave design is untouched, Blobbos is here but is pretty pointless, and TM availability is as shitty as Quartz (which is the same as vanilla Ruby, but still). It does also add a few events of varying quality- Blobbos is as adorable as ever if a little pointless, the endgame developer battles are neat and decent grinding, and the postgame dungeon added is pretty sick even if the secret boss is… unique? The direct 1:1 import of the Deadly Seven from the infamous Pokemon Snakewood is both unnecessary and obnoxious, so try to keep in mind its origin when suffering through that forced segment of the game.

(My final team- Dotori, Psimouse, Rubygon, Mazalon, Oceadino, Kaosune. Or, Flying/Fighting completely overhauled Cradily, Serene Grace Gardevoir, Split evolution Vibrava, Ghost/Steel Banette, Water/Flying Swampert, and Fire/Dragon Groudon.)

It’s a good game despite this, ok? Give it a shot, experience some Romhack history but not quite as shit as it was in ’06.

GENERAL STUFF

went for school, study abroad trip to study visualization and simulation of “serious games” that businesses buy and use (but i dont feel like talking abt it since this is the FUN POST

may 10-26

the flight was 11 hours, p easy, i didn’t know anybody going into the trip because i didn’t go to any of the meetings HAHhaHEHA

whatever. everyone on the trip initially came off as if they had yellow fever and i was like ... i’m really not trying to interact with FETISHIZERS

turns out they were all really cool! only this one kid was a real weeaboo who was greasy and tall and a neckbeard who kept talking about being “culturally insensitive” and speaking japanese constantly to the teacher and the TA like ... ok patrick we get it you flex

i stayed in a hotel in shinjuku! everything is so small and i used the bidets for the first time and WOO chile that shit feels FUNKY on your asshole

i visited shinjuku major (kabukicho aka red light district, couple other places!), ikebukuro (THE MEGA POKEMON CENTER), mt fuji, fuji q highland, akihabara, hamamatsucho (area where tokyo tower is), HARAJUKU, and the emperor’s palace! i’m probably forgetting some places since we went to a lot of temples and shrines that were cool ...

the public transportation in japan is scarily on time.. like, by the second. they apologize if they’re one minute early and will wait until the scheduled time before they move omg

the subway stations have their own jingles! they kind of act as an alarm system because a lot of people sleep on the subway (which is why people generally don’t talk on it) and will recognize the jingle for their stop!

the crowded hours on the subway are noon and 6-8pm... like, its insane. it’s actually packed like sardines in there. 

EVERYONE THERE IS SO SHORT.... i was taller than a lot of the grown men there (i’m 5′4″ or 162 cm for reference) and most people were around 5 feet tall... the only people taller than me were some kids around my age and this gaggle of japanese schoolgirls who were like 5′7+ and i was like. sis you’re 13, why are you that tall

pokemon is EXTREMELY prevalent in japan wherever you go. there’s pikachu stickers on taxis, pikachu is on ads on the subway and at the AIRPORT, pokemon go is widely played by a lot of people and so many of the people in my group played it so i got conned into playing again. i leveled up 5 times within 3 days and honestly? i’m god

anime is very normal there... i know that sounds all “weeby” but a lot of normal shops had animated mascots and there were ads for anime all over the place. 

literally gacha machines everywhere i spent a lot of coins on gacha machines plz kill me

the homies in japan loooove crepes. they sold so many crepes. everywhere. just crepes. also spaghetti carbonara! and corndogs HAHAHA

the food there is so cheap but SOOO GOOD. sushi isn’t all that expensive at all?? like a set of 16 pieces is 1080Y... meanwhile that cost in america is like. $6000 HAHAHAHAH. 

very humid? at all times? also the RAIN is debilitating if u make one wrong step you will slip and die (like i did! i stepped on a tile and fucking fell into a puddle! i have bruises still!)

SHINJUKU (detective pikachu day, may 10)

i went to go see detective pikachu on its release day in shinjuku! before that, i went to a couple sega buildings--

the sega buildings are 4 story buildings FILLED with claw machines holding stuffed animals, figurines, candy, all kinds of stuff. when i went, there was a lot of detective pikachu-related stuff. i saw this detective pikachu hat in one of the machines and spent 1000Y (about $10) or 10 attempts at the claw machine ... i still can’t believe i got it ... nobody was there to see it besides me and i YELLED when it dropped 

i wore the hat that entire day around shinjuku because i honestly felt like god. people would point at me and go like “ah! meitantei pikachu!” and smile at me. i was a celebrity. i wore the hat into the movie theatre, i wore it through the entire movie, and when i was walking out, someone tapped on my shoulder and asked for my picture. she was all nervous about her english and was like “i love your hat. may i take a picture?” and i was like omG YES U CAN... sweet bab... so that’s the first photo of me that ended up on some random person’s phone

we waited around for the mass of people to exit the theatre and then left, and we ran into her again! she asked me more questions about the hat: “did you make it?” “no, i got it in a claw machine in the sega building.” she looked dumbfounded. “in shinjuku?” “yes.” “in the sega building? over there?” “yeees.” “in a claw machine?!” “yes!” “ah! i thought you made it! it’s so cute! i’m going to get one for myself.” “lol ok have fun”

i learned that its customary to stay until the very end of the credits before leaving a movie out of respect for the people who made it! meanwhile in america we walk out when the credits roll FHDSKFJS OOPIES

SHINJUKU (visit #2)

we went in the night time to go see the red light district aka kabuki-cho because thats where a lot of the bars are

i don’t drink so i didn’t join the people who went to the bars to get CRUNK, so i dragged two other guys with me and we walked around the red light district

I SAW SO MANY HOST CLUBS. so many maid cafes. so many bars. i saw a love hotel too... i was like... i wanna go inside... Blease... and my friends were like “you’re so weird KHEDJFSk” and im like “I WAS GOOGLING THESE IN CLASS TODAY, I DIDN’T THINK THEY WERE REAL”

my friend sean (he’s from taipei, cool guy, could read a lot of the kanji so we used him to navigate the subway HAHA) was walking with me that night and we saw this hole in the wall that had stairs going down to a peep show ... homegirl had her whole ass out on the sign... tiddies covered with caution tape ... i said MAAM?

one of the signs in kabuki-cho had a woman doing straight up ahegao with (what i’m pretty sure was) nut on her face. it was a small sign and i was the only one who saw it. i lost my shit. it was the funniest thing ever

kabuki-cho is really really dirty... like people straight up litter all the time bc there’s no trashcans around? so people throw their shit on the ground? and everyone steps on it... very seedy area, very gross, but i was absolutely enthralled with the nightlife and the blatant sexual vibes half the places had!

some dude stopped me and started speaking english saying “do you like karaoke? you should come drink with me for two hours, it’s a great price if you drink a lot” and i was like “no... i have to go home” and he’s like “come onnnn it’s a good price” and i was like. i’m not very assertive with men so i started panicking and my friend sean (A GOD AMONG MEN) started speaking chinese to him and he backed off ... i love you sean you’re so fucking COOL

IKEBUKURO (pokemon mega center)

so there’s this huge mall. i forgot the name, but it’s got like a lot of floors and they’re MASSIVE

on the 2rd floor is the MEGA POKEMON CENTER!!! i was so HYPED to go in there!!! it was teeming with people but there was just... so much stuff. all kinds of merch. they had plushies of the original 151, a shitton of really cool tshirts, a whole block for detective pikachu-themed merch (pins, socks, canvas bags, shirts, patches, hats, etc), and sooo much more. there’s a giant charizard statue when you walk in, as well as a statue of a pokestop HAHA. i was so excited and i wanted to buy so many things when i was in there bc they had stuff for all the legendaries (LATIOS AND LATIAS STUFF WERE THERE I WAS SO HAPPY)!!! literally anything you can think of, they had in some kind of pokemon print. including underwear. yeah i said it. here’s a really good article that showcases some of the stuff they sold there!

for reference, 100 yen is about 1 usd. a lot of things there were 480 yen ($4.80) or 3000Y ($30) and it was just... beautiful. 

when i was there, yen didn’t feel like it had monetary value since it’s not the currency i’m used to, so i sPENT WAY TOO MUCH AHFJKDFD

they had themed cash registers with each of the starters... i cried :’)

i actually went there a second time but it was packed for a different reason. some idol group was performing on the ground floor and a shitton of girls were screaming fanchants while their jpop boys danced LOLLL. now i know how people see kpop stans ...

AKIHABARA (i went like 8 times)

SPEAKING OF HATSUNE MIKU AKA MY GODDESS, she was pretty popular in akihabara! she was also on some posters in the subway stations (across tokyo, not just in akihabara) and was apparently having some magical mirai concert???

there’s this giant tower called radio kaikan thats right outside the akihabara station that’s filled with all sorts of anime shit. i spent so much money in there. Good God. there was a furret plush for 5400Y and i was so STINGY that day i shouldve BOUGHT IT....  it was a longboi and i was like... sis!!!!

remember how i said my brain didn’t register that yen had monetary value? yeah i spent hundreds of dollars here no cap ...

i went to a kaguya-sama cafe as well on another day bc my friend joe (one of the figureine-collecting weebs) wanted to go and get a chika coaster

i went into a three floor sex shop and gave no fucks, the bottom floor was filled with bdsm shit and LEATHER SCHOOLGIRL OUTFITS and it was WILD. and these two old men were just casually browsing this shit like we weren’t both looking at whips and buttplugs in Public you know

i wasn’t fazed by a lot of the stuff there bc i read Funky fanfiction but the people i went in there with were major uncomfy ... i was like PRUDES HAJKFDAHDS i almost bought something don’t tell anybody

OKAY SO. there’s this place called super potato that has a floor dedicated to old games and consoles. they had so many gameboy advances and gamecubes and old consoles (famicom, dreamcast etc) for CHEAP. they had a gameboy color for 4900Y and a gamecube for 5600Y. a bitch almost cried. they had every old pokemon game under the sun (the original red, blue, yellow, gold and silver) and i ,,, they were 480Y. they were 480Y. that’s five fucking dollars. do you know how much collectors pay for that shit on ebay? HUNDREDS. i could’ve mass bought those and sold them and made so much cash but I DIDN’T.

that store had an original unopened copy of super smash bros melee and pokemon colosseum and i was like... wait if i cop a gamecube i could play pokemon collosseum like a true g... ((i didn’t cop))

but anyways there were a lot of games that didn’t make it to america (including mother 3! which my friend connor bought! as well as the console to play it!) and just... so many old things i grew up with ... 

whenever i walked out of the super potato we’d end up in an alley where all the girls who work at cafes were advertising their stuff

i always took the flyers from the girls bc they spoke their cute english to me and i was like... i’d die for you, yknow that?

ALL KINDS OF CAFES. regular maid cafe, pirate cafe, ninja cafe (you could do that thing where you karate chop a wooden block in half), sailor cafe (as in actual ship captains), shrine maiden cafe, vampire cafe, prince cafe (for the ladies ;3), catgirl cafe, bunny girl cafe... i took all of the goddamn flYERS THEY WERE ALL SO CUTE :( i wanted to go so bad...

FUJI Q HIGHLAND (also known as the time i flipped my shit and went on rollercoasters)

when i found out about fuji-q, i told my group that we HAD to go. i didn’t want to go to an onsen. i wanted to go to fuji-q. i had to. i love rollercoasters, it’s my passion, my driving fORCE IN LIFE

so fuji-q is home to 4 record-breaking rollercoasters! u got fast boi aka jojo reference do-dodonpa; EXTREME TALL BOI fujiyama; superior to x2 at six flags eejanaika; and the steepest rollercoaster in the world TAKABISHA ... i got to ride fujiyama, eejanaika, and takabisha! the scariest one was probably fujiyama despite it being very cut and dry up for... ever ... 79 meters ... oh god ... i lost my shit on the way down ladies let me TELL YOU

FUJIYAMA ALSO HAS A VIEW OF MT FUJI AND I WAS LIK E”YO GUYS ITS MT FUJI” and then we went down and i screamed

anyways the fuji-q park was having a sword art online collaboration when i visited, so they played SAO music and had cardboard cutouts for them across the park... kirito’s ride was fujiyama (aka the king of them all). i forgot the other ones but those alicization kiddos were there but ion care about ALICE OR EUGEO

the first ride i went on was eejanaika which is a 4d rollercoaster, pretty epic, total Baby Ride though

i went on as a single rider so i ended up getting put in this group with these college kids! the guy i was sitting next to spoke to me in english and asked basic questions: “where are you from?”, “is this [ride] easy for you?”, “how old are you?”, basic stuff. he asked why i was in japan and i told him i was studying at waseda university, and he immediately perked up and went “I GO TO WASEDA!!! WASEDA YEAH!!!” and fist bumped me ... his friends were giggling and kept asking him to ask me questions and it was just. so wholesome.

when we were abt to get on the ride he looks at me and says “my name is soichiro. call me so-chan ok??” and i was like... “so-chan” and his friENDS ALL STARTED GIGGLIGN AND I WAS LIKE U///W///U

while we were going up on the ride, he kept yelling “JESUS FUCK YOU JESUS CHRIST” and my favorite: “JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE FUCK YOU” because apparently fuck cannot be standalone! “what the fuck you” is my new fave insult (i miss you so-chan)

afterwards he kept coughing and was like. dead. his soul left his body. so i asked in him japanese like,,, “daijobu ka?” and he was like “nai.” and i just laughed at him bc BA B Y SO-CHAN CANT HANDLE SOME SPINS 

i bought a corndog at fuji-q at this place called arirang hotdog which is a korean style hotdog place??? BRUH that shit is so good but i shat myself for a good minute afterwards ... damn i want those corndogs

yaspup reviews: Vinicius & Tom, Fun for Nature

So... Some months ago, a friend of mine showed me new 2020 mascots for 2020 Tokyo mascots And I was like.. These look like a cross between a Latias/Latios and a Mametchi but other than that I thought they looked cute. But then She showed me These Olympic mascots Vinicius & Tom from the 2016 Rio Olympics and then I was like.. Oh cool, they were cute too! And then I start looking them up more and then I found out... There’s a cartoon. That Aired on Cartoon Network... IN BRAZILIAN TVS. 

And So.. That’s why I’m here. Talk about this cartoon and giving my thoughts about it. yes, I know this is basically four years old and we’re not having the Olympics anytime soon. And whenever we get to see the 2020 Olympics anime, for now, we will talk about this. So, let’s get started!

THE PREMISE OF THIS SHOW

Well Since This cartoon is more like a one-shot series and To be honest with you it feels a lot like those cartoons that uses the shorts as episodes like, More a bit Episodic than like a show that has an ongoing plot or whatever. Like for example, Like Pingu, The Moomins or even maybe the 2000′s Hamtaro or that Tamagotchi anime(which I’ll probably Review that when I have the change) Anyways, With that said, It Basically shows our main characters Vinicius(The Mascot that supposes to be all of Brazil’s animals into one) And his Friend Tom(Who’s basically all of Brazil’s Plantlife and also he’s the mascot of the Paralympics By the way.) Having many adventures and hanging out Cariocas Sisters, Bela(green one), Vida(Purple) and Sol(Who is yellow and she is really adorable to me). So With all that said. let’s talk about Some of the episodes or at least one.

THE PLOT OF THE EPISODE 

It’s kinda hard to pick an episode so, I’ll probably talk about that sock episode.

So we start off with Vinicius and Tom cleaning up their home until they found one sock and then turn it into a ball and starts playing with it until they found another sock and then put it inside the other sock to become a bigger sock, while Vinicius and Tom was trying to find some more socks so their sock Katamari can grow, But then they see Vida wearing her socks and then It gave Vinicius and Tom an Idea. They were walking around with one sock on their foot and act like it’s a fashion statement or like a tread. And so Vida took off her other sock to join Vinicius and Tom. And when her sisters came in(Sol and Bela) Sees Vida and ditch their sock and keep the other one on, while Vinicius and Tom and the others were showing off all of the other animals wanted to join in too. But later on, Vida found out that Vinicius and Tom were having a big sock ball, but once she saw her sock and pulled it out, it started to rain socks. 

Yeah I know it’s not really much but it’s kinda hard to review an episode of this But I can talk about the animation and character designs

THE CHARACTER DESIGNS AND ANIMATION

Well, oh boi let me tell you about the animation of this cartoon. Now I gotta admit, It’s colorful, Creative, And Cute designs. Now there are lots of things that made this show pretty, The use of colors like there was this one episode where Vinicius and Tom were painting everything and or better yet the backgrounds and characters. And Of course the designs of the mascots Vinicius and Tom are really cute and I’ve noticed that the colors matches up really well with each other and it has a really nice blend. Also, Sometimes We do get to See Tom on a wheelchair cause he supposed to the mascot of the Paralympics but still, It kinda makes me asks something like, Does he have some type of condition? Does he always use a wheelchair? And Of course, does he have fragile bones?(why am I asking too many stuff? Do plants even have bones?) And of course the Cariocas sisters have a unique design too, and you can tell them from apart yet.. at the same time, I just wondered why do they look thicc? I mean, I’m not the only one that looks like they thicc? anyways the designs look nice and it’s very colorful. and yes, I know that some people would think it looks like the early seasons of advanture time but believe me, this show has it’s own flavor. Also, I know this isn’t animation but the music’s pretty good and I mean really good!

 CHARACTERS

Now, with the characters, it’s really kinda hard to say since there isn’t really anything to say about the character except for what type of Vibe I’m getting. So Here goes nothing, Vinicius, He’s hyper, fun loving and just Playful. he does hate water and he’s really caring to others. Tom, He’s Carefree and playful as well, but he’s not Hyper unlike Vinicius, but he does love meeting new friends and is creative. And for the Cariocas sisters, they don’t really have much of a personality well, at least for Bela in this case but, For Vida and Sol, I feel that Vida is more photogenic and loves taking everyone’s pictures and with Sol, she just enjoys flowers or just loves helping out her friends. (Also, if some of what I’m writing doesn't make any sense I’m just really tired. and I ship tom with sol)

IN CONCLUSION

What’s so good about it, well, I can give you that the animation, Music, and some of the characters are kinda cute. yeah sure, some don’t have as much personality than others but other than that, I still think it’s a good cartoon for everyone. and when you got nothing better to do check it out! you’ll might like it.

My ideas if Wales gets referenced in this new britain region which is probably unlikely but we can hope:

* Another sheep pokemon/a mareep regional variant/just mareep being common over here

* llamhigyn y dwr regional variant of gligar! As a kid i always thought gligar was meant to be one of those! Its a mytholigical flying frog with a scorpion tail, and really the only reason i dont think gligar is based on it is because its ground instead of water type. Like its really specifically similar right down to the wings being webs under the arms!

* Welsh Lady pokemon! (The traditional costume kids wear at eisteddfods)

* Maybe instead some sort of legendary based on eisteddfods in general? Theyre a poetry/art festival where the winner gets "the chairing of the bard" aka just imagine ur average school contest except if ur in wales u literally get knighted with a fake sword, crown and The School's Personal Throne. Its very weird in retrospect but it just seemed normal when i was a kid. I won it once and i was so anxious having to go thru the big celebration thing!! Like aaa just let me take my certificate and run! XD So yeah maybe a legendary based on the eisteddfod throne itself? Its called a throne but its more of a fancy wooden chair with patterns carved into it. So some sort of wooden dragon! And the legend would be that only the most talented bards can ride it and it bucks off anyone it thinks isnt purehearted enough. And maybe it could have a lovespoon for a tail cos thats also another wooden welsh thing. (Fancy carved spoons for good luck and/or romantic gifts)

* welsh cake pokemon!! Theyre just a sweetened scone with raisins in it, but i think it could be really cute as a design. Im thinking a rock type that just coincidentally looks like a cake with raisins, and it rolls around sideways like a big goofy crab~

* or if you wanna go for other local foods maybe mix the kelpie with bara bryth? (Seaweed bread paste stuff) So its just a loaf of bread that evolves into a badass horse and it would make no sense to anyone except brits, lol.

* perhaps a legandary based on the bard taliesin? It could be similar to nebby in starting off with a weak baby form but then becoming a badass! Cos his origin story was that he wasnt naturally all super cool so talented at singing that he could make literal magic happen just by sheer creativity. Instead he accidentally drank a magic potion of creativity that a witch made, and his abilities came at the cos of Pissing Her Off Forevermore. So maybe the baby form cpuld be a witch's cauldron? And have a tail made of chains to symbolize how he was enslaved as that witch's assistant and managed to escape with her most valuable prize. And then his ethereal fancy humanoid form could maybe be similar to meloetta's living music thing but more with calligraphy instead? But perhaps still have a similar chain tail to show his origins, except now the links in the chain are all fancy calligraphy Os, lol

* accompanying legendary possibilities: ceridwen (the evil witch from that story) or morfran (her innocent son) Morfran did nothing wrong but is often painted as more of the villain of the story than she is, simply because he was black. Yeah there's racism even back in our mythology, ugh...! I always felt so depressed for morfran cos the story is that ceridwen only made this super magical potion of being the best bard ever cos everyone said her son was the ugliest man on earth and EVEN SHE AGREED so she thought she had to give him some magic powers to stop people from hating him. And instead taliesin steals it and goes off to be the most powerful and respected and also handsome man ever, the end. And seriously the ONLY THING they mention about why this child is ugly is that he was "black like a crow" and also his name means evil crow. And thats just the end of his story forever, being some other dude's origin story and then forgotten into the void :( So like hey a pokemon criticizing that part of the myth wouls be great too! Like maybe have morfran be a counterpart legendary like latias to latios and he just looks equally beautiful with a reversed colourscheme of dark skin and white calligraphy patterns. And maybe the pokedex entry could be like "taliesinmon got its powers thru a magical gift from meloetta" and "morfranmon worked really hard for its powers all on its own and also is very socially anxious and relateable and tumblr user tumblunni's favourote character in all british mythologies despite also representing the worst part of our nation but hey its not this man's fault please rescue him ok" Srsly its not like its common to see taliesin referenced in fiction but morfran is even more forgotten and i think he needs at least one positive fictional depiction to make up for being screwed over in the original myth.

* Another myth with unintended bad messages is the one of Blodeuwedd or Dwedd (friends may recognize that i named my Gourgeist after her!) Her story is that she was an artificial human created out of plants in order to be some guy's sex toy basically. Yet she's the villain of the story cos she refused to marry him and ran off with another guy. Like seriously she was BORN to marry this dude! Even if he's the big mythological prince we're supposed to root for, with modern morality perspectives its kinda impossible to see it that way. At least unlike morfran she actually does do other stuff to establish her as a villain other than just existing, she comes back with her new boyfriend to kill the dude who made her and thus set the course of history awry cos he was A Really Inportant Destiny Prince And All. But seriously dude this is 100% your own fault for being creepy enough to not want to date real women and instead have some messed up preprogrammed woman who'd do whatever you want. "The only reason she wouldnt obey like he wanted must be because the seed of evil was in her heart" yeah no maybe it was the seed of free will u bastard. Anyway they have a funny sequence where prince douche mc douchebag is prophesized to never be killed by etc etc etc so dwedd and her new boyf have to trick him into THE MOST CONTRIVED CIRCUMSTANCE EVER to find a loophole. I think it was something like one foot on a goat and one on a bucket while at the border line between two countries at the crack of dawn? And as fitting a standard boring hero story of course eeeevil dwedd gets thwarted and prince pompous is ressurected and she's punished forever by being turned into an immortal owl for some reason.

* SO YEAH! Plant owl legendary! I just thought this myth in particular would be cool cos a female plant legendary with a disney villain aesthetic instead of the cliche pretty sexy thing everyone would probably expect. Make her bombastic and badass and terrifying!!! The pumpkaboo line is the closest thing so far cos bat pumpkin is KINDA close to daffodil owl. At least in terms of spooky aesthetic, lol

* oh and also her boyfriend was named gronw pebr and honestly he barely does anything in the whole story but he has a really cool name so i felt like mentioning it

* our national flower is the daffodil and our national vegetable is the leek so maybe a farfetch'd variation with a daffodil? Or maybe a saucepan or somethin. It could kinda work with farfetch'd origin, plus one of our most famous nursery rhymes is about saucepans. AR GATH WEDI SCRAPU GROOKEY BACH

* our national animal is actually the dragon not the sheep! So definately give us some good dragon types!! Our flag is a dragon so maybe our legendary could be that? And perhaps reference the whole "red dragon beats the white dragon symbolizing how much england sucks" legend by having it have two forms like minior or darmanitan and the weaker cowardly defensive one is england. Just sayin!!

* i dont think you can really make a pokemon personification of england conquering and literally owning us and us taking so long to even get considered a separate country again and be able to have our native language in schools except it was already so many generations passed of it being forbidden to be spoken that barely anyone still knew it and even nowadays when we have billingual road signs the rate of billingualism is incredibly low and im really jealous of my sister growing up in a school that taught it from a young age cos i was thrown into intermediate level welsh without having the basic lessons and thus nevee managed to learn it at all and felt both stupid and disconnected from my ancestors irretreiveably

Chara’s opinion on Giratina? The kids’ opinions on legendary Pokémon in general?

Chara is definitely a huge Giratina fan, they’re edgy enough to truly appreciate the local satan pokémon in all its demonic glory. they also think Mewtwo, Yveltal and Darkrai are way cool. however, they also think Latias and Latios are cute.

Asriel likes most legendary and mythical pokémon just because they tend to be extremely cool and strong, but his favorite is Shaymin. he also likes Mewtwo and Arceus a lot.

Frisk isn’t really interested in legendary or mythical pokémon, since they mostly tend to like weak/overlooked/ignored ‘mons. however, they do like Entei, Raikou and Suicune, because they are, in Frisk’s own words, “just big pointy dogs.” it’s impossible not to love the big pointy dogs.

Chara and Asriel have an extremely difficult time coping with the fact that Frisk doesn’t catch legendaries/mythicals when possible, they’re one of a kind, Frisk, how can you NOT want one, they’re SO RARE

at first Frisk only avoided it because they weren’t interested, but now they deliberately avoid catching any rare ‘mons just to be a contrarian

Those ideas are really cute and cool I could totally imagine Sonics' Pikachu evolving in to Galarian Raichu or Nigel having Alolan meowth cause it's fancy and Chuck getting a meowth to match except it's the scrungly Galarian variant if you'd had time to give them more than two, I can actually also see Nigel with a Fidough since it fits with him naming the chao Angelcake.

As for pokemon other main characters in your AU I could imagine also having along with the pokemon you gave them.

Sonic: maybe a Boltund like him a having Muttski in the comics (and just because I couldn't think of anything else except for maybe Latias or Latios)

Tails : maybe a Rotom like Shard because they're adoptive brothers in this and he could use it to hack Eggman tech or a Porygon or one of its evolutions because they're also kind of techy possibly also Vikavolt that he found as a Charabug ( I really wanted to give him another electric type like Sonic but didn't want to give him a Pikaclone)

Amy: a Swirlix or a Alcremie because she bakes.

Knuckles: a Riolu/ Lucario because of it's aura abilities and Knuckles' connection to the master emerald.

Shard: a Silvally because it was created to be a weapon but was saved/ escaped and got a family and friends Genesect for similar reasons.

Elias: maybe a Honedge he got from Nigel.

Silver: with him loving plats maybe a Budew or a Petilil maybe their evolutions.

Chuck: like I said Galarian Meowth to match Nigel and because they look a bit scruffy in a cute way.

Nigel: as stated above Alolan Meowth because it's fancy and Fidough because he had a Chao called Angelcake and I see Fidough as a lapdog also a Sinistea evolved into a Polteageist (since he's british and needs a british pokemon and of course it would be the antique variant with him being royalty)

Blaze: Fenekin/ Braixen and Ponyta/ Rapids because cute and elegant fire types.

Sonia: low-key Toxricty (I think she's a bit calmer than Manic) also Sprigarito (I wanted to use more starters and I think it would suit her)

Manic: amped Toxtricty and Grookey (they're both drummers)

Aleena: something associated with magic/ psychic maybe a Delphox or a Gardevoir.

Ellidy: like silver Budew or Petilil/ their evolutions and a Chansey or Blissy because you said he'd be more of support or a medic in combat situations.

Paulie: a Slaking or Harriama because they're bulky and strong.

Brenda: a Smeargle and since you mentioned cute spiders also a Tarountula

Tania: baby/ cute pokemon Patchurisu (or Dedenne or Emolga), Tediursa, Happini (it heals her if she gets hurt also possibly given by Ellidy because she's Chucks' niece), Togepi (Paulie might give it to her)

I know y’all didn’t follow me for my nights time rambles about my ocs/sonic au stuff but HERE WE GO AGAIN

I’ve been playing Pokémon scarlet a lot lately so here’s what Pokémon my sonic au characters would have. Why? Idk just indulge with me for a sec. Im only really doing the main characters in this au so no shadow, rouge, cream etc. yet. Also I’m only doing two Pokémon each they would have, saying what team they would have will take me all night so LETS GO.

Sonic: shaymin and pikachu (of course sonic would find a mythical Pokémon by chance and pikachu is because of the smash bros ultimate trailer when he tries and save pikachu!)

Tails: vulpix and yanmega (vulpix is obvious but yanmega is a cool helicopter bug!)

Amy: tinkaton and shiny ribombee (tinkaton is Amy as a Pokémon lmao and she’d be the one in the group to find a shiny Pokémon that’s cute to)

Knuckles: falinks and sandslash (the falinks are actually based on knuckles story in frontiers with the lil soldiers! And sandslash cause they dig)

Shard: todegemaru and rotom (a steel type pikaclone to counterpart sonics pikachu and a rotom to mess with machines and chucks metagross)

Silver: espurr and hisuian braviary (silver deserves a cute Pokémon and a cool ancient Pokémon)

Elias: gallade and sirfetch’d (SWORD TIME BABY)

Blaze: espeon and ceruledge (…espeon just looks like blaze lol and ceruledge is a cool fire knight!)

Aleena: audino and bewear (audino is a musical healer like aleena and bewear is mama bear)

Sonia: plusle and purrloin (plusle to match manic’s minun and purrloin to cause mischief with)

Manic: minun and nickit (minun to match with Sonia’s plusle and nickit to steal stuff with)

Chuck: herdier and metagross (chuck needs a little lap dog for stress relief and a giant flying super computer to look cool)

Nigel: aegislash and drampa (Nigel needs a sword Pokémon lmao and drampa is just sweet and kind but extremely powerful when someone harms people he loves. Like Nigel!)

Ellidy: porygon and shiny rowlet (a Pokémon that can enter the cyberspace with you and a little green owl for gardening company)

Paulie: dragonite and togekiss (flying gentle giants!)

Brenda: grafaiai and joltik (she likes art and has electric powers she needs a cute spider and painter)

Tania: pichu and flittle (little Pokémon that can somewhat do no harm)

I've gone on record stating that Gen 3 is not my favorite, and I stand by that.  I think Team Aqua/Magma had a lot to do with that, being far less interesting than they should have been.  As much as we mock IGN for it, the fact that the latter third of the game is a bunch of surf routes with the same Pokemon over and over is also frustrating.   Also, since I'm in the middle of playing the remakes of ORAS, I find it really frustrating the things that they changed, with my biggest gripe being that I wish my rival would go away forever.  That said, the Pokedex itself has always been something I appreciated.  A lot of my favorites came from Gen 3, so I tended to remember the Pokemon in the region fondly, even if the region wasn't my favorite.

TOP 15: 15) Mightyena line - There was so much competition for this slot, it's ridiculous. Ultimately though, I have to give it to Mightyena and its pre-evolution, Poochyena.  Both have great designs, but the thing that stood out to me most was that, in the early game, we were given a Dark type.  That's really atypical! Usually you go through the normal types, the Flying types, and the bugs, until after the first gym.  But Gen 3? You got things like Mightyena right away; it wasn't even rare!   Combined with things like Seedot/Lotad and Ralts, you had some interesting types going into the first gym.  Mightyena is a great starting point for introducing how unique Gen 3 and its Pokedex are, and I think it stands out a lot because of it.

14) Nosepass - Imagine being a kid who had faced Brock back in gen 1.   Imagine again that you started with Red and Blue, and didn't pick Charmander. Odds are, you blasted through him without a second thought.  Literally no issue. Now, imagine going to Roxanne, blasting through her Geodude like they're nothing, and then encountering Nosepass, who can tank those Grass and Water hits just fine, and hits pretty hard for early game.  Nosepass is awesome.  It's a fantastic tank, who can take all sorts of hits in that early game.  While it doesn't hit particularly hard later on, its main draw is as a wall among walls, with great support options.  The concept of basically being a walking easter island head statue is also comical.  It looks funny, but it's adorable too, making for a fantastic overall Pokemon.

13) Absol - This is a Pokemon that gets a lot of favoritism based on aesthetics. It's a sleek and pretty Pokemon, but also has a great role.  It tells of impending disasters, and is a fun but short-lived character in Red Rescue Team as well.  I really like Absol, and just wish it could be a bit faster so it could have a solid competitive niche.

12) Aggron line - We've had big bipedal rock monsters before, like Rhydon and Tyranitar.  But Aggron is just a different kind of cool.  Its sleek metal plating and terrifying design are fantastic.  The fact that it starts out as the cute little Aron only helps add to its charms.  Best of all, you get it super early game.  Rhydon was surprisingly late-game, and Tyranitar was literally only attainable when you had nothing left to do.  But Aggron? You can run one the whole game.  I love the ability to do that.

11) Metagross - YEAH!  Metagross is a beast, and a strong contender for my favorite pseudo-legend.  It's literally a walking tank, with the glorious Steel/Psychic typing.  It had one of the few Steel moves in the game that was actually useful, and back before the nerf, Steel covered all of Psychic type's weaknesses, making it a defensive and offensive nightmare.  I love the entire concept behind this behemoth, too.  It's a walking robot monster, whose evolution is basically just it gaining more legs until it becomes Omega Weapon. 

10) Breloom - I'll get to a similar case later, but Breloom is a favorite based on typing.  Grass/Fighting was unreal at the time, and it did super well for itself. Plus it's just cute.  A tiny little punching mushroom child, with stubby little arms that apparently shoot out to hit really hard.  It's a quirky concept with a fun design, and I adore it. Plus, Spore with the abilities it would later get made it a surprisingly brutal enemy to face.

9) Roselia - IT'S SO PRETTY!  Such a gorgeous Pokemon.  Grass/Poison was pretty overdone, even at this point, but I just loved the appearance of it.

8) Swampert line - Dual-type starters, at this point, were still relatively rare. Venusaur had Grass/Poison, but so did every Grass type in gen 1 barring Tangela.  Charizard had Fire/Flying, but the fact it wasn't Dragon is stupid.  Gen 3 introduced new dual-types for starters, and one great one is Water/Ground with Swampert.  While the combination had been done before with Quagsire, Swampert offered far better overall bulk and damage output, on top of its excellent typing.  It's also goofy-looking, but in a really charming way.  It's just so loveable, and every evolution retains that cute look.

7) Flygon - Flygon is just cute to me.  It looks like such a friend.   Being a Pokemon that exists in the sandstorm-focused desert area was also cool.  I really liked that there was an entire region dedicated just to the new weather effect.  Shame that Sandstorm was such a pain in the ass, but it's a really cool area!

6) Altaria - Altaria is so pretty.  Just a fluffy cotton ball bird...dragon.  It's apparently more of a songbird, too, which is just heavenly.  It also got a great mega evolution, receiving Dragon/Fairy typing, which is hilarious and excellent.

5) Latias - I'm guessing this run of Dragons is proving I really like the soft, friendly dragons over the big intimidating ones that actually do well, huh? Dragon/Psychic was, at this point, the coolest typing I had ever heard of.  But what's cooler than that?  How about a super adorable Dragon/Psychic type.  Oh, what's this?  It gets a hold item that boosts special attack and special defense 50%?  That's ridiculous, I love it. Latias is the more defensive option of the two, which I always felt was better if you factor in hold item.  The added defensive bulk is going to matter more than slightly more physical offense from their perspective.  Of course, Latios having much better special attack is ultimately better in competitive, but Latias still has her use, and is super cute.

4) Blaziken line - Remember when Fire/Fighting was a novel type?  Remember when its introduction was a kick-boxing chicken creature?  Those were the days. Torchic is one of the cutest starters, and its final evolution is surprisingly still an elegant design.  It was such a cool idea, and I love that Hidden Abilities brought it back to the top.

3) Mawile - It's such a cute little creature.  Cute and terrifying, and excellent combination for sure.  It's a shame that Mawile ultimately was a forgettable Steel type in terms of competitive use, but the acquisition of Fairy type and the best mega really helped it out on that front, too.  So I guess it's basically perfect? Sounds about right.

2) Milotic - I never caught one in gen 3.  Not fairly, anyway.  I could never figure out how to get Feebas to show up.  In fact, I don't think I've ever captured a Feebas.  I've always traded for it.  It's just so hard to find.  But man, is the final form ever beautiful.  It's such a gorgeous Pokemon, and an excellent tank to boot.  Everything about Milotic is wonderful.

1) Gardevoir line - Don't you judge me.  We all knew this would happen.  If you read anything in this post or the ones before it, you know elegant and cute are the biggest draws for me.  Gardevoir is both. It's also a Psychic type, so bonus points there.  Also, as mentioned in the Mightyena entry, it's super early-game. Rare, sure, but you can have a Psychic type from nearly the very start of the game.  I love Gardevoir so much, it's definitely an all-time favorite, and it should come as no surprise that it winds up being the favorite from this generation.

BOTTOM 10: 10) Pelipper - I like Pelipper.  Its reason for being here is that so many Gen 3 Pokemon are great, it just doesn't stand out as much as the others.  I have literally no complaints, I just locked myself into "it has to be 10" and here we are.

9) Huntail - Same as above, it just doesn't hold as much aesthetic appeal.

8) Seviper - If there's anything I actually dislike here, it's just that it's pure-Poison type.  We had a Poison snake already.  I would've liked to see a different typing added in.  Poison/Dark at this phase of the game would've been amazing.

7) Zangoose - Still good, but it loses points based on my frustrations with Pokemon Coliseum.

6) Glalie - Getting closer to legitimate frustrations, Glalie is here because its design doesn't captivate.  Snorunt is cute, but it evolves into an angry face in a block of ice.  Not exactly all that interesting.

5) Volbeat - Did nothing legitimately wrong, but I am upset that Volbeat gets a lot of nice and unique tools that Illumise does not.  I like Illumise.  I think its color scheme is a lot better.  But Volbeat gets the nice tools, so whatever I guess.

4) Ninjask - Please stop speed boosting, I am begging you.  You do nothing else but Swords Dance, Speed Boost and Baton Pass, please do something else.

3) Slaking - Okay, actual legitimate complaints.  Slaking's problem is it goes backwards.  Vigoroth was a nightmare to face, and I have a friend who stated that facing Norman's was the reason he started to respect Normal types as something other than early-game fodder.  But Slaking?   It re-acquires Truant, which is an awful ability by any standard, and requires very specific team support, on Doubles only, to mitigate.   Anyone who sees Slaking knows exactly what will happen, and is probably more than prepared to shut it down.  It's a nice design, and a nice concept, but it's been so ruined by the ability it is burdened with that it's virtually unusable.

2) Plusle/Minun - Possibly less legitimate complaint, but I feel more strongly about it. Plusle and Minun are cute and have solid designs, but their great sin is being Pikachu clones for the new area, kicking off the trend of needing an electric rodent in every area.  Worse, they do not evolve, offer little in the way of any competitive value, and existed to show off the introduction to Double Battles with their unique abilities and access to Helping Hand.  Beyond this, they offer very little, and are the reason we have to always have a new electric rodent that ultimately winds up having no competitive niche.

1) Grumpig - Literally the only one on this list I dislike.  Spoink is cute, and Grumpig is...not.  It just looks irritable and not all that friendly by comparison.  It's also nothing too impressive competitively, and offers little in the way of uniqueness, losing the quirk of constantly bouncing around like Spoink did to...just be grumpy.  It's a Pokemon I might like more on its own, but as an evolution of Spoink it doesn't seem as interesting.
