Casual Affections

20. making them food they like

In the wee hours of the morning, Tim Drake stood in the kitchen of Titans Compound — tired and groggy and overworked to the bone.

Also in the wee hours of the morning, Bart Allen stood by the stove — smiling like a goof and cooking over a flame.

Despite operating on roughly three hours of sleep, Tim managed to blink. "Whatcha' doin', Bart?" he asked, walking over to the island in the middle of the kitchen.

Bart was whisking some pale yellow goop inside of a hot saucepan. "Cooking," he answered without looking away.

"For everyone?"

"If they want it," Bart shrugged. "We Speedsters know how to feed a crowd."

Before Tim could say anything else, he let out a tired yawn.

In response, Bart motioned over to one corner of the kitchen, where a streaming teapot sat on the marble counter.

"Brewed a fresh pot," the Speedster said, dropping a handful of grated cheddar into his saucepan. "Juuuust for you, Tim."

Somehow, Tim mustered the energy to say, "Thank you."

With all the grace of a drunk toddler, he hobbled over to the pot. After grabbing a mug from the cupboard, he poured himself a piping hot serving of tea. After a taking a whiff of the brew, he could tell that Bart had used his favorite blend, a robust Irish Breakfast tea that he usually preferred instead of coffee.

As he blew some steam off his mug, Tim got a better look at what Bart was making. Cooking on a large skillet was several strips of bacon and several eggs frying in a shallow pool of grease. In one corner of the pan there was also small pile of mushrooms and shallots, presumably for health reasons.

Bart stirred a pat of butter into his saucepan and pulled the whole thing off the heat. "Ever had southern-style grits before?"

Tim shook his head as he sat at the island. "I don't think I've ever had grits."

Bart poured a serving of velvety, creamy grits into a bowl and topped it with another square pat of butter. He slid it over to Tim with a smile.

"Then prepare for your life to be changed," he proclaimed with pride. "Southern cuisine is pretty much its own food group."

Tim eyed Bart skeptically, yet grabbed a spoon and gave his grits a stir. Even after cooking, he could still see streaks of orange cheddar cheese in the bowl.

As he took a quick sip of tea from his mug, Bart went back to the stove and flipped the frying bacon. It gave a satisfying sizzle as it splashed back into the grease.

Soon enough, Tim finally put a spoonful of cheesy grits into his mouth. Immediately, his tongue was blanketed by a warm, savory taste, a sensation so rich he almost lurched at the feeling. After weeks of subsisting on apples and old muffins and stale potato chips, Tim's stomach and psyche had missed home-cooked food.

He quickly swallowed his spoonful, then scooped up another.

Over his shoulder, Bart noticed his friend happily enjoying a good hot meal. He grinned as he took the bacon and eggs off the hot pan.

"Ya like?" he asked, smirking.

Tim nodded quickly. "Very much so."

"You can thank the secret ingredient," Bart explained with ease.

"Is it love?" Tim guessed jokingly, taking in another spoonful.

"Well, that a quarter cup of bacon grease."

Tim suddenly choked.
