Calibreon Expansion #15 - Gryphon

Somewhat lore, mostly speculative thought about my choices in deign under the cut.

Gryphon are a species of Calibreon that have always remained semi-nebulous in their existence. Thinking about Gryphon as any large massive species never seemed to work because there in my mind wouldn't be enough food to sustain them where I imagined they'd be so I settled for something simpler and more compact. 

These medium-sized creatures can be found in northern Talis. Though by nature they are wild, it is possible to tame one for work in hunting results may vary on workmanship with one. They're at largest around the size of an average bobcat and form groups or prides of around 5-8 individuals. While they can fly it's not very long-distance and is ideal for short burst hunts and roosting at night.

Weyr are one of the few species to have constant run-ins with Gryphon. While they won't actively hunt one another sometimes Gryphon will follow a Weyr hunting party and try to snipe their catch from them- typically interactions never get more violent than this. Some Weyr are even clever (or brave) enough to try and tame a Gryphon much like someone would a hawk or eagle for Falconry practices. Gryphon are very tempermental however and may not listen the best- but some have managed.

Gryphon anatomically resembles hawks, smaller eagles, and puma or bobcats. Though the species aren't one-to-one aesthetically pieces of the design influence their colors. They have feather-like "ears" like a Great Horned Owl which they use expressively to communicate silently to one another. They have sharp beaks and teeth- though like other birds they lack the ability to chew so they swallow food in whole chunks. 

Their diet mainly consists of but is not limited to small mammals such as deer, sheep, or with group efforts Elk or Bovine. They have also been known to eat fish, insects, birds, turkey and in rare instances they may brave going after wild hog.

I just wanted to say I love your art so much. I started following you on DeviantArt when you primarily did colored pencil work- it was a huge reason why I initially followed back then. From there to Tumblr and Twitter, it's been a real joy to watch you grow as an artist and see familiar characters and faces from then to now. For your worldbuilding asks! 10, 16, 21!!

10: Is there a single leader, multiple, or are decisions made by the people? If the former, how are the leaders chosen? If the latter, how are decisions made?

Cherisan Valley: Pretty standard monarchy. There is one king governing the whole valley. However, up until recently the two major cities in the valley each had their own kings, until the king of Manak took over the city of Reshiran.

Aran Islands: Two leaderships: a monarch and a lead priest. The preist is appointed by their predecessor.

Rivercrossing Village: Not specific to this one village, I just haven't come up with a name for the larger culture it belongs to. Villages don't have leaders, decisions are made via direct democracy (i.e. a town council type gathering.) Each one elects someone that represents the whole village during bigger meetings involving multiple places.

Anik culture: Each family group is led by its oldest male. When all the families in a region gather during the winter, all the patriarchs have to work together. This does not always go well.

Arctic Sailors: The captain leads their crew. The captain is just whoever is best at leading a group of people.

21: What symbols are used to represent places or societies? What would be put on flags or banners? What do they represent and why is that important?

The Cherisan Valley is best represented by a yak's head, and the Aran Islands are best represented by a peacock's tail fan. Both animals are associated with the sun in those respective cultures, and the sun is a core aspect of their societies. I haven't come up with symbols for any of the other places/cultures I focus on.

I don't know if this is anything you've ever been told but for some reason looking at your art makes me think/ feels like a visual feel of music from the band "Lord Huron"? (Especially the lonesome dreams / Strange trails albums) I dont know but everytime I listen to the music I think of your work!

This is maybe one of myfavourite things I've been told in recent memory, and most of my memory? Music informs my work very intimately and it is alwayshumbling when somebody makes a connection between my work and that ofsomebody who deals with similar themes... But I sat down to theLonesome Dreams album and was kind of floored by how much these guysget it, haha! That they approach death and other endings withcompassion and warmth really speaks to me. There is this sort ofnatural sense of wonder with the world (and, of course, The West) andthe way they write it is as much a conversation as it is almosthymnal. It all makes me very happy to have that even tangentially connected to my work, because they are important themes to me.

Ends of the Earth, Time to Run,Brother, and Ghost on the Shore stand out to me, but I made immediateconnections with all of the songs in the album, which is rare forme... Thank you so much for sharing this, I hope that this responseisn't overwhelming. I really appreciate this!

1. What’s your favorite meal to have on a cold day?

Udon noodle soup is always super comforting to have on a cold day….most kinds of noodle soups are good tbh. I wouldn’t say I have a particular set favourite though!!!

2. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall?

Spring and Autumn are really good - Winter and Summer over here are really cold, and really hot respectively, so Spring and Autumn where you have a mix of in-between days or mild average temps is real nice.

3. Beach person or woods person? Why?

Having grown up spending a lot of time at the beach it just has a really nice vibe….theres not really any true ‘woods’ in Australia anyway idk if that’d make a difference in my decision.

The beach is nice, the sound of waves are good, plodding along the sand investigating shells and washed up things is GREAT. What else is cool…rockpools. Rockpools are wonderful lil ecosystems all on their own.

Whats not great? Having to then get that sand outta your clothes, outta your hair, finding sand in you bed weeks later…bringing sand home with you is the worst!!

4. If you have any OC’s, describe one of your newest !

Do I have OC’s? [canned laughter] BOY DO I

I guess my newest OC would technically be Ashstride. They’re one of the main characters in a mini-campaign I’m currently running for my D&D group…its werewolf themed because I’m predictable as hell :3c

They're a non-binary rogue type character that has an eye for shiny things and knack for eviscerating their enemies. Currently they’re on a murder-quest to kill their current pack leader and re-stabilise the pack structure without giving too much away.

If things go well and they don’t get murdered, I’d like to bring them back as a player character one day.

5. Favorite art you’ve ever done/favorite piece of art someone else has done? (dead artist or currently living one)

Ooooh man its so hard to choose just one (so I won’t) 

basically anything in my inspiration tag, or inspiration folder is [big thumbs up]

6. Extra blankets or extra pillows?

It used to be extra pillows, but now I’ve exchanged that for blankets. Winter is the best month for sleeping cause it means I can pile a whole bunch of blankets on top of myself and get real cosy.

7. Favorite weird animal?

Does the Maned Wolf still count as a ‘weird animal’? I love those weird leggy dogs on stilts…otherwise, Goblin Sharks are pretty cool.

9. What do you think of geese?

I haven't had enough encounters with Geese to have an opinion one way or the other??? Swans on the other hand are assholes.

11. Average time you go to bed?

10:30 usually…depends on how early I need to get up. If I’m not doing a specific activity I generally hop into bed around 9 and scroll tumblr/watch netflix/read until I get sleepy.

I get real cranky if I start missing out on a lot of sleep, so gotta make sure Im generally well rested [flexes]
