#Calimari Inkantation

Ain’t nobody gonna see this but I have theory of the Calamari Inkantation. Splatoon 3 Spoilers.

Okay so I was listening to Wave Goodbye, the Splatoon 3 Credits Song, over and over like a normal person, when at some point I realized when they get to the portion that starts the Calamari Inkantation lyrics, there are non-filtered voices singing. Humans Voices. (Pictured is around the point where that section starts)

Then I thought to myself: What if the Calamari Inkantation originated as a song humans made on Alterna? A song to help them continue despite their world falling around them. Then I started looking into the logs and reflecting on past events with the song and..

Let’s just say Sunken Scroll #23 from Splatoon 1 saying: “Nowadays, this song and dance may as well be carved into the very DNA of all Inklings.” ..might be a tiny bit more literal than expected. Let’s take a look at what we know.

The Calamari Inkantation is a literal incantation. Series of words, or a song in this case, that causes magical effects. It has, in many cases, been known to give strength, physical or otherwise, to those who have been in audible range of it. Ex. Giving Cuttlefish the strength to break out of his restraints and Smallfry to temporarily evolve(?) into Hugefry.

With that said, I believe the “Calamari” part could be from the place it was “founded” in and taken on as a traditional song for. Calamari Country. Which is where Callie and Marie come from. Perhaps the Inklings of the area long ago found the sheet music.

Moving on, the part of this that helps this theory’s case is Alterna Log005: Fresh Intelligence Awakens.

After the liquid crystals that retained decades of humanity’s wishes was absorbed by the squids, octopuses, and other sea creatures that inhabited Alterna’s waters.. it imbued them with fresh impulses that “bore a striking resembling to humanity’s passive desire to return to the Earth’s surface”.

Interesting. The desire to return to the surface was slowly fused into their DNA. You may be thinking “But what does this have to do with the Inkantation?” And that’s exactly where I’m going with this.

So if we are to think.. the Calamari Inkantation was made by the humans on Alterna, perhaps filled lyrically with their wishes.. and the sea creatures absorbed the desire and wishes of humanity to return to the surface through the liquid crystals.. and the Calamari Inkantation gives sea creatures the literal strength to move forward..

And the INKADIA-BORN OCTOLINGS, who were SUFFERING in poor conditions UNDERGROUND in DOMES heard the CALAMARI INKANTATION and suddenly their “SOULS WERE FREED” and THE DESIRE TO RETURN TO THE SURFACE AND THRIVE WAS EVOKED INTO THEM AGAIN?

AFTER YEARS OF LIVING A HARD MILITARISTIC-STYLE LIFE WITH BEING INDUCTED INTO THE ARMY AT A YOUNG AGE, THEY FOUND THE STRENGTH TO LEAVE THEIR ENTIRE OLD LIFE BEHIND? TO RISK IT ALL. EVEN THEIR OWN LIFE. TO JOIN WHAT THEY WERE PRESUMED TO BE THEIR WORST ENEMIES ON THE SURFACE IN HARMONY?

After thinking about all this and rewatching the Octo Expansion Surface Cutscene (from that last GIF), I nearly wanted to CRY. They had never seen the real sky before, the real SUN before. They made it. Not only the Octolings but humanity’s final wishes made it too.

That’s my theory. Perhaps I’m wrong but either way I would love to see what people think. Thanks for reading.

Oh and also, since it named the “Inkantation” that means someone knew of its power... This just in, did the Inklings cheat in the Great Turf War?

I imagine the L/N story being most similar to Splatoon3's main story

Mafuyu is a high-ranking sanitized octoling soldier, despite the Tenmas + Toya being from the Metro too, they don't know each other due to military ranks

Due to the metro being freed, Toya was not fully sanitized like Mafuyu, which is the reason I have come up with for his hair being like that

Akito has seen Ena go into the deepsea before and is very against the idea. Toya says it's probably a bad idea to go there so it must be horrible

Ena and Akito's dad does NOT like octolings and taught them not to since it's a thing a lot of inkling parents tell their kids.

so were not gonna talk abt how marina is tapping into peoples fuckin souls? /lh its just wild to me how splatoon went from fun shooter in the cutest post apocalypse to this like. sci fi fantasy about life finding a way , our dreams being carried on by the next generations and how cool fish are . i cant DEFINE splatoons genre anymore i think it qas always a little magicky with the calimari inkantations history but the mem cakes and beyond have moved this game into a extremely. BIZAREE category that isnt one. its a shooter about squids and looking into its lore is gonna make you realize some.stuff about you and the universe and that youre probably into girls

What's up with Calimari Inkantation, anyway? The way that cover of "Chorus of Calamari County" sparked a mass Octarian defection can be downplayed by other factors, but its power directly facilitated L'il Buddy absorbing "marine life energy" and turning into Hugefry. Considering the song is etched into marine DNA, this strays into "magic crystal" territory. But it could additionally be a few stages up from ablaut reduplication or how we see 3 as a "magic number." Patterns inherent to the psyche.

What I think happens with Calamari Inkantation is that hearing the melody triggers a biochemical response in Inklings and Octolings. It basically induces the body to amp up release of neurotransmitters that enhance certain brain functions, which makes them hyped up. In humans, the ideal chemical for this would be norepinephrine - but cephalopods don't produce that chemical. Instead, they like most invertebrates have a closely related chemical called - I'm not making this up - octopamine, which does roughly the same thing. The mass Octarian defection could in part be chalked up to octopamine. Norepinephrine increases vigilance, attention, and memory formation/retrieval, so octopamine might have a similar function in cephalings. So it may have helped Octolings to see past the propaganda and wonder what life might be life outside.

Calamari Inkantation being "etched into their DNA" sounds like a poetic way of saying that the gene that causes this is present in Inklings and Octolings. And since the hype effects have so far only been solidly documented in them, I like thinking of it as a gene that first appeared in a shared ancestor. The Shellendorf Institute has an exhibit on it:

And this makes me wonder: how far does it go? How much of the melody must be heard to induce this response? Does it have to be exact? Can it be in a different key? Could the bridge of this song cause the same reaction?

Now I think something different happened when the Smallfry heard it. Can't be the exact same thing since vertebrates use norepinephrine instead of octopamine. I'll note that the little guy will hum the melody to himself sometimes without becoming huge - so the melody by itself may not be enough to cause Hugefry. Perhaps something else happening as well to cause that.

I'll admit - there is no natural explanation for how the little buddy can grow to kaiju size and back. It doesn't square up with biology or basic physics. If I may editorialize: I thought that the scraps of explanation with "marine life energy" and "three lights united to consume the disaster" was... not nearly as built-up or fleshed out as it could have been. Came out of nowhere with no real reasoning. I'll probably rewrite that bit at some point because I'm not satisfied with how that played out. Nevertheless, I will let it slide, only because we get a kaiju fight out of it, and that was awesome.

Size aside, the other physical changes in the Smallfry can be explained. As is widely known, male salmon during the breeding season will dramatically change appearance. This is ultimately caused by the body being flooded with testosterone. A similar flood of testosterone causes musth in male elephants, and during this time they become extremely violent. Out of every Salmonid we've seen thus far, Hugefry most closely resembles a raging breeding season male salmon. Check out that kype.

Conclusion: the Little Buddy grew to kaiju size and became flooded with testosterone. This sends him into Salmon Musth, which makes him drastically change appearance and fills him with rage and violence, directed right at Mr. Grizz. How much of that was a biochemical reaction to Calamari Inkantation 3Mix and how much of it might have been something else is unknown.

SIDE ORDER THOUGHTS

I beat Side Order last night after 3-5 runs and after sleeping on it here are my thoughts (spoilers ahead)

The first ten floors (inital tower) is insane. Not only does it serve as a good tutorial but the dialog and tension is such a good hook

When I got to the first boss, I didn't look to closely and just thought "oh we're fighting Octavio again as the first boss? He's here? OK cool" it was infact NOT Octavio lol. I even took a screen shot before the boss fight and looking at it, yeah definitely not Octavio lol

Honestly so glad the Marina wasn't the main villain, and I'm glad she tags along in the elevator

Speaking of Marina, her and Pearl are so in love here. Like I shipped them before but now with their dialog, the dev diary, even Marina's computer screen being Pearl, they're so canon

Shipping aside, honestly think that the dialog is one of the strongest aspects of this mode as we learn more about the memverse and the character dynamics

I also love Acht, no need to further explain, they're just so cool

Person who's only rouge like experience is hades: man, this is just like hades! (This is a joke, I only said that on vending machine levels)

The levels themselves are fun, all be a bit repetitive at times. It is a rouge like but there 4 different level types (minus bosses) and limited floor design, then again, I've only played 3-5 runs and half of that was with Agent 4's pallet

A little disappointed that agent 4 didn't show up in the flesh but I'm a firm believer that Parallel Canon is supposed to be clones of them because of the matching hair styles with your own and with the completed pallet of 4, Order mentioned that Marina wanted 4 to be security for the memverse so I'm taking those crumbs

Also kinda disappointed that we didn't get more Off the Hook and Dedf1sh songs but the ones we got were good. I like how ebb and flow is kinda like Off the Hook's equivalent of Calimari Inkantation lol

Continuing with music, I like the music but felt like I didn't get to appreciate as much because I was so focused on the level (this is a me thing but still)

Order is a cool villian, bit generic but still cool, I like how his boss fight was foreshadowed as a locker item (it's an in universe Switch game, I forget what's it's called)

In the last phase of Order's boss fight, I got splatted a few times and luckily there wasn't life count so it just gave the option to continue or give up and every time I hit continue I thought "omori did not succumb, agent 8 did not succumb" lol

The credits were beautiful

This is probably the first splatoon story that I'll aim for 100% because there is still a lot to know and learn

Inkopolis Square as a reward was predicted but welcomed, it's really cool to see what has been built up since Splat2

ISO PADRE IS HERE, HE'S FREE, MY MAN IS FREEEEE!!!!!!!!!

A little disappointed that the grate the originally lead to Splat2's story mode is just covered a manhole cover unlike in the plaza but that's just a nickpick on my end

Shout out to that one octoling beside the claw machine saying they miss squid beats, we all do

Honestly still shocked at how fast I beat Side Order lol

Overall, I enjoyed Side Order. Personally, it was a bit underwhelming but I'm satisfied. Like I said, I'll probably be trying for 100% cause the dev diarys, pallets and collectables but for what's it's worth, it's good

Marina headcannons for octo day? -Bingob

MARINA HEAD CANONS FOR OCTO LESBIAN DAY!!! sorry this is coming late its still the 8th in my timezone tho

- She learned to speak inkling in a short period of time while Pearl taught her due to her natural intelligence

She loves LEGO sets, she’s an engineer and I think she’d love the technic sets so much

Very into like electric punk inspired music, lots of octoling musicians have surfaced since off the hook became popular so Marina likes to make playlists with lots of underrated artists, maybe she has a podcast where she recommends and talks about the artists 🥺

Her fingertips (and other bioluminescent parts of her body) glow when she’s embarrassed or flustered, its like a more obvious blush - pearl loves this

Her tentacles also curl idly when she’s happy or excited about something, not much of a noticeable thing unless you were paying attention to them

She has a habit of playing with her hair

If she could collab with anyone it would be dedf1sh, whether it be a instrumental track only or a combined effort of their DJing skills and Marina’s vocals, she just would want to make a really cool track with her

As much as she likes to work the odd salmon run shift, she does think the smallfrys are adorable, she would like Neo 3′s little buddy (”pearlie can we please adopt a smallfry too? just look, lil buddy is so cute~”)

She likes theories about video games and movies and other media she’s into, she would watch the splatoon equivalent of matpat’s (matsplat’s?) game theory

Weirdly enough, she likes to read scientific journals, like research papers just for fun. It’s really interesting to her and the knowledge isn’t dry like it is to most people, she grew up with books like that in the military to entertain and educate herself so she still enjoys them now

She wants to launch her own tech brand! headphones, keyboards, speakers, accessories, all stuff she designs and creates related to technology they use. maybe even as far as like sound boards and equipment related to music

Even though they’re personally friends now, she does still view Callie and Marie in a heroic light for performing the calimari inkantation and breaking her out of the control she was under

She cherishes her friends as her family, since she doesn’t have biological family members
