S = k. log W is a new compilation of experimental music from French label Camembert Électrique.

For this project, we chose an inspiring idea: Ludwig Boltzmann's formula, which links entropy to the statistical probability of a system's microstates. Essentially, it speaks about the disorder and order within a system, and how they can mix. Ludwig Boltzmann was a scientist who worked on statistics in physics. He created this famous formula: S = k. log W. It shows how entropy, which measures disorder in a system, is related to the probability of its different states. The idea was to invite artists to create music that reflects this concept. We wanted to show how disorder and order can coexist together. It was a musical exploration to express this complex idea in a creative way.

It features my track Holode. A holode is what Boltzmann calls a system’s complete ensemble of states, the bigger picture that one must consider, rather than single particle states. I can relate to that. I recorded it mostly live, with my penny whistle through my favourite effects pedal, then added the bass to it.

Slow, breakbeat, almost drone bass jazz played by a four-piece out of Belgium. Lots of gut churning bass, heavy breaks, lots of atmosphere. Right up my street!

Sonny & Terry by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee

Classic Chicago blues and soul from 1973. Some of their own, some of others, covers of Curtis Mayfield and Sam Cooke, and one two minute instrumental track (Sonny’s Thing) that you could play to a hip-hop crowd today and the heads would be all over it.

Camembert Electrique by Gong

Oh man, this is just like the pinnacle of weird, abstract psychedelic acid fuelled space prog, and it’s awesome! It builds and builds, like a trip and just keeps spiralling round. Never gets overly pretentious like some of the other prog bands of the time and always stays on the right side of the music, rather than the pomp.

As is tradition, i shall now tag in a load of other Tumblrfuckers who may or may not choose to follow suit... I mean, what the fuck do I care? I'm not your daddy. Unless you're into that whole thing of course and then yeah, message me and we can come to an agreement.

We are no more living in the same town but we try to keep collaborating thru time & space. Like I did with Humanfobia for the first invisible illusion TOHU WA BOHU https://archive.org/details/Invisible_Illusion_Tohu_Wa_Bohu_Disc_1 I sent the raw improvisation session to ardleg and he created these upgraded tracks listenable on the EP. And next I reworked a little the raw tracks adding several layers to two of them, reading poetry on another one and that's the LP. I prefer called them EP and LP to avoid any order. That one would be before or after is irrelevant. You can listen first one or the other or both at the same time it's up to you, like for the world : alternatives are better. Seems that one important point with Invisible Illusion project is to show the result of different development process apply to one source...About the surface of this album : I found a plastic turntable cover with the inscription "electronic control", it was transparent so I thought I would be able to made an interesting artwork cover by taking a shot thru this. Then I decided to create an accurate music for it. After the quite dark Tohu Wa Bohu I wanted to slowly glide to the light. That's why despite it could have been far more on the electronic side actually it sounds very industrial music with a touch of "jazz", not real jazz more the sort of dark jazz Mecano did on Autoportrait album.Also the silence within silence has been record for the excellent compilation silence by Camembert Electrique. It's a slightly different version https://camembertelectrique.bandcamp.com/track/silence-within-silence than the both versions listenable on the LP.About the depths of this album :Do you remember ? The first time you disobeyed to an order, not to something maybe acceptable from a skilled authority but from the kind of authoritarian people without skill, needing hierarchy power to show they are above the other, despite it could be just small team chief with very little power, the smaller they are the more they need to prove it by being nasty. Do you remember how the struggle for this freedom make you aware of who you are ? Disobedience is one thing but it's meaningful only if it leads to autonomy. What a pity if slaves break their iron chains to swap with golden chains. I will try to talk the less possible about control, because it makes me sick, but it's the plot of this album. There is only one song with real lyrics and Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche quotations, most of the music is echoing the feelings grown inside me in the last few years. So since the covid excuse to build up the electronic control society, situation is awful, it was already the case several years ago : there was the increasing level of state violence, state terrorism and media censorship. It can still get worst making us our own cops, all that black mirror shit already more than half happens. If it needs to resume : shock strategy worked perfectly and now as some said there will be no way back without fighting for our rights. Well this sounds naïve, if you remember the subprime crisis or the looting of Greece, you know that the dices are loaded : states, banks, multinationals create rules that they never really follow. Corruption is the replication process of capitalism virus. (Hand in

hand with mafias). So what ? Solidarity is the antidote. Perhaps keep a space to think by yourself, act by yourself at your local level, your own way, keep your dreams alive and don't feed the nightmare with your hopes. And at some point we may wake up. Containing 6 tracks percussion journey into Dahlen’s imagination brings manifold cinematic memories to my mind. Music is very imaginative and spacious. Soundstage is simply epic. This are all big scores like sonic landscapes reminding works of the biggest names working for the movie industry. Like Hans Zimmer or Ryuichi Sakamoto. Or Antonio Sanchez to bring it more to the jazz drumming territory.

But the drumming is very propulsive as well, so it refers to the history of the rock music without a shade of doubts. Music of The Police, Tangerine Dreams, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd or Grateful Dead alike comes to my head as a first impression.

Another subject worth mentioning is an extended range of instruments which had been used for making this sounds. Not just a drums and bells and all sort of percussion instruments, but also cutlery, strings and all sort of electronics to mix and loop it with at the end. Even Drone boxes, to jump out of usual approach completely. All that shows an incredible creativity and imagination and the frameworks he created and taking us indeed into multiply mental departures. Sort of things which I first time experienced from another percussionist wizard – Terje Isungset.

An opening Clocks, with gentle techno bit and ticking sounds of clocks and gongs reminds a bit a psychotic trip of Dark Side of the Moon that Floyds took us once to. But the tension brings even more dark feelings and multicultural images which are travelling through your head are revering to early period of Gong music, a bit like on Camembert Electrique with drumming pattern reminding a bit Dire Straits. I can see the crops from movies like Solaris, 5th Element or Delicatessen, humour wise. So, you got a picture now, I believe.

The Glas, coming after is Insugset’s universe. Short , but very rich ,spacious and dynamically extended, with this feeling of coldness coming from the upper transients of the percussion sounds.

Ship, Is almost like a tribute to the Gong’s Gazeuse with very rich tissue reminding me the best from Pierre Moerlen. But with this electronic plankton characteristic for the overall sound of CAN from the period of 70-ties and 80-ies, listen to the Tago Mago album, or to the Rite Time and you would feel it immediately. One can tell the music he grown on listening to.

Following two with the titles illustrating animals, the Bear and the Lizard I like to see as a portrait of the creatures themselves. In the first one monumental stepping power of the rhythm describes the rough power of the animal, with its ruthless sense of self confidence. Dynamic range makes this walk incredibly three-dimensional and almost touchable like a hologram.

On the other pole, we are getting repetitive pattern camouflaging the real nature of the sonic wave which gets twisted and modulated under the surface. Kind of weirdness which makes an easy natural association with a reptilian sort of nature. Some might however see completely different pictures there. Easy to understand if listened with no suggestion coming from the title.

That’s exactly the power of that music. One keeps reading in it like in an open book and never gets enough. Therefore, I am leaving closing Wood composition for your very own recognition.
