💖unnecessarily-long doll tour under the cut oh my GOD i'm so excited okay💖

first, monster high:

1. Draculaura (Scaris: City of Frights, Mattel, 2012)

i snagged this doll from a flea market in 2021. somehow, the only thing missing is her purse. she even has her earrings! she's got some fairly bad glue seepage going on with her hair, but it styled decently for now, so i'm gonna tackle it later.

2. Frankie Stein (MH G1: First Wave – Boo-Riginal Creeproduction, Mattel, 2022)

i found this at my local walmart and nearly had a fucking STROKE, i was so excited. I Fucking Love Her. frankie has always been my favourite, and i'm so happy to own this creeproduction, especially considering what a nightmare distribution was in canada. the fact that this frankie made it to my grubby paws at all is proof that god is real.

3. Spectra Vondergeist (Ghoul's Night Out, Mattel, 2013)

growing up, i only had three MH dolls: a second wave frankie, a boo beach cleo de nile, and this spectra. spectra is the only childhood survivor, because i begged and pleaded for AGES to get her for christmas, because she was a GHOST and OF COURSE i wanted the fucking ghost. once i got her in my hands, i treated her like she was made of fucking gold.

she's missing her purse and vinyl vest right now, because i had to undress her for the first time ever recently in an attempt to give her a bath (which did fuck all). she's got a SEVERE case of glue seepage in her hair, as well as some brutal UV yellowing that i'm gonna have to paint over. but she's my fucking baby, and i'm gonna get her fixed up.

4. Frankie Stein (MH G3: First Wave, Mattel, 2022)

i was really iffy on G3 at first, but it has grown on me so much. i couldn't fucking believe it when i heard that frankie is canonically nonbinary in the reboot, i was ecstatic. they're fucking AWESOME, they are SO TALL, i love their face sculpt and their outfit and their accessories (which are not pictured) and their prosthetic leg is so cute and the graffiti on the leg is upside down so you can tell frankie did it themself and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

5. Draculaura (MH G3: First Wave, Mattel, 2022)

draculaura is the always a slay. the reboot draculaura is absolutely not an exception. i'm fucking obsessed with this lil bitch, she was the first G3 doll i grabbed. she's an icon, a fashion queen, and she's chubby. i'd be here for years if i tried explaining how much that means to me.

next, LOL surprise! OMG and LOL surprise! tweens:

1. Emma Emo (Tweens – Series 3, MGA, 2022)

i don't have to explain why i bought her. look at her. fucking look at her.

2. Skatepark QT (OMG – Series 5, MGA, 2022)

i've always been a wannabe skater, even though my balance is absolute shite (but i AM working on that). my motivation behind buying lol dolls is never that deep, i just see their colours and their outfits and i go OOH SHINEY and then i'm at home fighting for my life to get into the box. idk man. they're all cute at fuck.

3 + 4: Punk Grrrl & Rocker Boi (OMG – Remix 2-Pack, MGA, 2020)

in summer of 2022, my family was on vacation on prince edward island, and we needed to kill a few hours while waiting for check-in to open up at the second campground we'd be staying at. my parents are my enablers, so they decided the best way to kill said hours was to set me loose on the toys 'r' us in charlottetown. my wallet hurt after and it ROCKED. these guys were part of my haul!

these motherfuckers have the goofiest goddamn names in the world, but i forgive them, because they are a slay. they're so cute together. their outfits are fantastic. the sides of her head are flocked so her undercut is fuzzy. they have guitars. HE'S A BOY. i love them.

5. Darcy Blush (Tweens – Series 4, MGA, 2022)

this lil lady is the latest addition to my collection, i grabbed her last week. she's very aesthetically different from the other lol dolls i have, but i could not walk away from her. i even tried, but right before we left, i ran back to the toys and grabbed her. her face is so sweet, her colour scheme is darling, and the coloured braids in her hair are so sweet ;____;

these are some miscellaneous dolls, we're moving into the barbie realm:

1. Jacob Black, Bella Swan & Edward Cullen (Barbie Collector: Pink Label – The Twilight Saga, Mattel, 2009)

i got these for christmas in 2009. my mum was super into twilight at that point, i showed interest in her interests (Because She Is My Mummy), and boom. dolls.

she didn't want me to take them out of the box, since they're collector's editions.

naturally, they were removed from their boxes Fucking Immediately, because i was EIGHT. and to this day, i am still not an in-box collector (save for a couple of wrestling action figures i have). these three are very well loved. bonus points: edward's entire body is sparkly!!

2. Heather Grayson (Rainbow High – Shadow High: Series 1, MGA, 2022)

she's just a slay. idk what to tell you. i'm a sucker for split dye hair on dolls, man.

3. Elsa (Disney's Frozen II – Musical Adventure Elsa, Hasbro, 2019)

again, no complicated answer here. i love elsa. she means a lot to me. when you press the button on her chest, she sings "show yourself"!

4. Sasha (Bratz Rock Angelz – 20 Yearz Special Edition Reproduction, MGA, 2021)

i had a sasha doll as a kid, though it wasn't this exact one. she's my forever fave of the core four bratz. i got this doll on that same toys 'r' us trip in PEI, and she's so cute. i need to actually watch the rock angelz movie (i've somehow never seen ANY bratz movies).

and now, barbie:

1. Princess Rosella (Barbie as The Island Princess, Mattel, 2007)

none of these dolls are in very good condition, because all four of them are mine from childhood. this ro doll literally only has the dress and sagi the red panda left; everything else that she came with was lost to time, moves and general kell behaviours. but, when you press the button on her necklace, SHE STILL FUCKIN' SINGS! THAT'S A W

2 + 3. Princess Alexa & Princess Liana (Barbie & The Diamond Castle, Mattel, 2008)

oh my fucking god i abused these lil whores. alexa's face has been drawn on with pink highlighter (which, to my credit, you can't really tell. shoutout to my younger self, hashtag beauty guru moment). liana's dress-transformation mechanism is so worn out that i swear to god breathing on her wrong will trigger the audio chip in it, resulting in this grating, tinny sparkle sound effect. their shoes and tiaras are with jesus now, but shockingly, i still have One (1) of their hairbrushes. but SOMEHOW, SOME FUCKING WAY, THEY STILL SING AND LIGHT UP, TOO. i never said they sound particularly good. BUT THEY WORK AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS.

bonus points: their dresses' colour schemes are like the bisexual and lesbian pride flags respectively, which shreds absolute puss. and it's doubly fantastic because the diamond castle is THEE gay barbie movie. these girls are homosexual.

4. Barbie (Barbie Hair-Tastic! Color & Design Salon, Mattel, 2012)

there's no movie tie-in for this doll. she came with a salon chair, some stencils, and some spray bottles full of coloured liquid. you could "spray paint" her hair, then wash the colour right back out. i don't have the other pieces anymore, but i still have the barbie. unfortunately, i very recently melted off a section of her hair by accident while trying to straighten it (adhd moment, forgot to wet the strand), but thankfully that section is well-hidden and hardly noticeable. i just think she's pretty.

(her outfit, however, is a fuckin' SIN i hate it so bad lmfao)

and i just bought these two today, and i am so excited i think i could keel over right the fuck now:

1. Rayla the Cloud Queen (Barbie and The Magic of Pegasus, Mattel, 2005)

she has all her pieces, and she comes with a pegasus.

she is so fucking gorgeous. i cannot believe my luck right now. rayla has never even been on my wishlist, she just comes with the annika doll. this is a complete and utter win for me. everything is coming up millhouse kell ybcpatrick.

2. Princess Annika (Barbie and The Magic of Pegasus, Mattel, 2005)

I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO OWN THIS BITCH FOR EIGHTEEN FUCKING YEARS. EIGHTEEN. MOTHERFUCKING. YEARS. OF. MY. LIFE. AND SHE'S GOING TO BE MINE. AND SHE HAS ALL OF HER ACCESSORIES. AND SHE COMES WITH THE LIGHT-UP WAND. SHE EVEN HAS INSTRUCTIONS.

magic of pegasus is my favourite barbie movie of all time. this is childhood wish fulfillment x1000. i'm convinced once this doll gets here, at least two of my mental illnesses are gonna be cured instantaneously. i might honestly cry once i get to hold her. i'm not over it i will never be over it i'm fucking losing my mind out here.

OKAY FUCK. that is all of my dolls. sorry that this is like. So Fucking Long. OEDKJSDJVSJDFJ. but, toys are one of my special interests, so getting the opportunity to talk about them is a treat 🥹🥹 i'm also really invested in my collections; aside from dolls, i also collect CDs, wrestling action figures, and crystals 😃💓

BC: West Kootenay

Once back down Mount Revelstoke, I picked up a delicious poke bowl from a food truck to eat while waiting for the ferry across Upper Arrow lake... which instead of 30-50 minutes turned out into a 1h20 wait due to delays, mechanical problems etc. A bit of a shame, especially as due to the smoke there was not much to see! 😒

I had been recommended that this would be a good place to paddle which I can imagine on a clear day but I wouldn't venture on the water in these conditions... I might not find my way back! 😅 On the ferry we were laughing that the scenery was so extremely pretty, at least in our imagination 😝

After the ferry landed on the east side of the lake, I had one of the best experiences so far in my entire time in Canada; soaking in the hot springs of Halfway River! 😍❤ It's a bit of a trek to get there, first on a rough stoney road & then 100s of stairs down to the valley floor but it's absolutely worth it! There's 3 man-made pools of different temperatures (the hottest was way too warm), a few natural pools a little bit further and then the river to cool you down. I understand why people I spoke to have been returning for years on end, I could stay here forever ☺... there's no better feeling than to get really hot and then plunge head down into the cold water! Most people tend to only sit in the cold water not submerging their head, so I taught a girl & a few ladies the real magic of going all-in with the hot & cold cycle 🤩 (which they loved after the first shock)

Unfortunately I did need to say goodbye to the hot springs as I had another hour to drive to New Denver (next time, I'll stay at the on-site campground!), where I stayed at a hotel run by a friendly Chinese family, so had yummy Chinese food but the room was stuffy and hot 🔥, probably better off camping despite the smoke.

Over dinner, I had a great conversation with an older couple who has travelled the world including Scotland and Colombia so it was fun to exchange notes. It did also make me realize that although I very much enjoy traveling to explore new places, I get my real energy from living in a different country, building a new life there and getting a deeper understanding of the culture (like I did in Canada 😍)... I see my road trip as a farewell to this amazing country that I call home, and although it seems distant at this moment, I'm looking forward to starting a new life in Chile, so together with the worsening fires in BC it felt I was coming to an end to my travels soon. I still had 6 more nights in the Okanagan booked that I was excited about but perhaps after that it would be good to start my return. Fast forward 2 days (as per one of my previous posts); after having had terrible smoke in Nelson and more areas being evacuated I did cancel the bookings and returned east, not even making it to the Okanagan 😔

For now however, the next morning was slightly better and it made me happy to see some snow-covered mountains and semi-blue sky from my window! 😀 I was told that New Denver is a hidden gem so I walked around the old downtown and bought delicious orangy cake from the farmers market. Thereafter, I visited the Nikkei memorial centre at the location of a Japanese Canadian WW2 internment camp which had ofcourse shocking displays and a pretty Japanese garden (I've had my fill now of internment info though; I better hope Canada will never have a war with the Dutch or the French 😅). There was another Japanese meditation garden on the lake but by then the wind had kicked up a frenzy, signalling it was time to leave!

Driving across the mountains to Kootenay Lake, I stopped by in Sandon, which is billed as a ghost town but I didn't get a good idea of its history (I'm guessing mining ?)... currently, it's more of a repository of old trucks, train wagons and a whole collection of electric trolley busses (incl. one from Hamilton!) that are waiting to be restored and put back into use (questionable given their current state). The iced coffee was delicious! 😁

In Kaslo, I visited the SS Moyie Sternwheeler which had functioned as the only local transportation for the villages along the 105km long Kootenay lake until the road was built. The ship is beautifully restored and I can imagine this was pure luxury at the time!

After a well-deserved icecream and a chat with dear Priyanka 😍, I had quick stops at a strangely rounded covered bridge and some falls (of which I've also reached my limit now) and then on to Nelson. My tent site was a bit different on a deck high above the rest of the campground... put in extra stones to make sure I wouldn't roll off in the middle of the night. 😅 Delicious Italian food & local wine on a patio with live music capped off a good day ☺

Next morning though, the smoke was double heavy although it had cooled down 10 degrees overnight, and the bad news of fire evacuations kept rolling in so pulled the plug and canceled my existing reservations (they would have been nulled by the end of the day anyway because of the travel restrictions put in place for tourists), and booked new ones in East Kootenay on the way back to the Rockies. Feeling drab, I spent some time inside at the visitor centre and a restaurant but the smoke was everywhere...it did not only physically feel bad but also mentally it wore me down like a heavy blanket trying to suffocate.😔

I had driven by the Ainsworth hotsprings the previous day so went back and had some good time there... they also have a "cave" in which you can swim which was different... didn't beat the forest hot springs but the warm water was soothing anyway!

In the evening, I went to an Oppenheimer party at the cinema with live music & drinks before the movie, something completely different! 😀 I briefly met an interesting couple who live happily in Nelson & had met many years ago, after she had decided to grow roots in Nelson "because it felt home" after a summer job... gave me hope I'll have the same home feeling when I'll set foot in Chile!

Despite not having been able to truly experience West Kootenay as I had wanted to, I feel that this is an amazing region so will hopefully come back here another time, just not in August.

Sunday

Really, really long drive today. Over 500 miles to Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta.

At 3:52am, I woke up to catch a glimpse of the sunrise. At 4:55am, I did Wordle and thought about getting out of bed. I don’t know how well I would do in the land of the midnight sun.

The Delta Hotel did well by us. We had a very nice suite, access to the concierge lounge, and complementary breakfast. All those days of business travel still pay off when traveling outside of the USA.

As we made our way out of town we passed Rothwell Street and saw a gray partridge running through a parking lot. How could the day get any better!

Need I say more…

We drove an hour down Trans-Canada Highway 1 and stopped in Moose Jaw to check out the town. Sunday mornings is not the best time to see how vibrant a town might be. Needless to say, it was dead. However, we could see that there was a lot going on in town. All the storefronts were full, there were plenty of bars and restaurants, just nothing was open on Sunday at 9am.

We rolled down the highway.

Next stop was Swift Current for lunch. Then we passed through Medicine Hat. Along the way, the flat farmland of Saskatchewan turned into rolling hills. Then it flattened a little as we came into Alberta. We saw mule deer, pronghorn, and the occasional suicidal rodent. We saw miles of rapeseed (canola), legumes, oats, and other crops. We saw major mining operations, miles of power transmission lines, pump jacks, solar panels, and windmills. And we saw cyclists miles from nowhere riding bikes that were fully loaded with gear. Those crazy cyclists!

We rolled into Dinosaur Provincial Park around 4:30pm. The Park is actually in a canyon which was a surprise to us. We were driving along and suddenly dropped a few hundred feet into the park entrance and visitors center.

The park is wide open for exploration. The areas on the fringes the park are restricted to authorized persons due to the abundance of fossils. Before we leave, we have a tour within the restricted area!

The campground is quite active. The park as a variety of programs for visitors, especially kids. We sat in on the Dinosaur Trivia contest which was fun for all ages.

Another positive, the Canadians are really very friendly. We’ve spoken to several people, many noticed our NC tags (license plate). Our neighbor is a paleontologist who previously worked in the park, for example.

Do Our National Parks Need more RV sites in their Campgrounds?

Camping in National State and Provincial Park Campgrounds Some of the most breathtaking protected parks in the Great Outdoors are in North America. Parks like Grand Canyon National Park and Yellowstone National Park are crawling with wildlife, gorgeous plants, walking trails, and scenic views. But where are the RV-friendly spots? There is a shortage of RV campsites in national parks and national forest campgrounds. State park campgrounds also often lack RV facilities, preventing some campers from accessing these beautiful sites. RV Camping in Canada In Ontario, the provincial parks campgrounds website, Ontario Parks Reservations makes it much easier to make a campsite reservation. Select the dates you’d like and the size of your rig, and it will pinpoint which parks can accommodate you. You can find Big RV-friendly campsites in many Ontario parks, but not as many there are for as smaller campers. Booking systems like this are an RV owners dream, they eliminate a lot of stress around finding a spot. Campsites in British Columbia are alike, but it's harder to find RV-friendly places in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta. With no easy booking system for provincial and national park campgrounds, RV owners have to make countless calls with questions for staff. Even worse, it leaves them to show up at the park only to find out they cannot fit. National Park Campgrounds in the United States In America, there is a similar struggle. Some states have great booking systems that will allow you to search by lot size, hook-up type, and available amenities. This makes planning your trip a breeze. The National Park Service offers online reservations for national park campgrounds. Check out the National Parks campground website or call the recreation.gov reservation phone number at (877) 444-6777 or internationally at (606) 515-6777 outside the US or Canada. All states have online booking or reserve-by-phone capabilities. RV camping in Colorado is a great example of this. Their booking site has everything searchable at the click of your finger. Another great booking site to simplify bookings for national parks and state park campgrounds is Reserve America. Other states, like New York, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, have great booking sites as well. These states allow campers to use the length of their RV to start a search. Some states, like Maine, Kentucky, and Florida, don’t offer this functionality, making it slightly tougher to find sites based on RV length. Sadly, many parks do not offer hookups for recreational vehicles. Constructing campgrounds with hookups would take a lot of time and commitment on the parks’ behalf. Yet without these hookups, they are limiting the guests who could attend their beautiful parks. It is not impossible for an RV owner to park in a non-hookup spot. But sometimes dry camping is not for everyone because it requires more gear and supplies, which not everyone can acquire. South Manitoba

I left Winnipeg not too late in the morning and finally got myself into the Prairies proper driving in south-western direction. The flat landscape reminded me of the Netherlands, but in place of church spires indicating where the villages are, here it's grain elevators that tower above the horizon... conveniently with the name of the town written on them! 😁

Funny enough, one of the villages was called Holland, complete with a tulip-sign and a windmill 🤣

First destination of the day was Spruce Woods provincial park near the town of Glenboro, but Gmaps directed me initially to a farmhouse south of the highway rather than to its proper location 10 km north! The same happened a few more times in the following days for both Manitoba and Saskatchewan parks so that taught me to ask directions - something we don't do often anymore! 😜

The highlight of the park are the Spirit Sands; the remnants of what used to be an expansive inland dune area deposited by a glacial lake 10,000 years ago. Although the dunes still shift with the wind, most of the area is being reclaimed by vegetation as, contrary to a desert, it actually receives quite a lot of rain. Having grown up with dunes along the North Sea in the Netherlands, it looked familiar but rather than a cooling sea breeze it was scorching hot! There were luckily some hand-pumped water wells along the trail that friendly hikers operated while I put my head under the cold stream 😃, however once I had seen the "Devil's Punch", a little pond filled by underground springs, I cut the hike short and returned to the car AC.

Afterwards, I cooled down some more under a tree at a picknick area on an oxbow lake (I was too tired to walk down to the water & take a pic 😅).

Having anticipated that I might not feel my best the day after Harman's wedding 😆, I only had a short drive further to the municipal campground of Souris, which has a cute swinging bridge, at 604 ft supposedly to be Canada's longest suspension pedestrian bridge (?!?), the first one built in 1906. The town had also nice sculptures of a moose and peacock, of which apparently there's many in the village although I saw none. This was the first time that I had stayed on a municipal campground and although busy with a pool & lots of running kids, I had a nice spot on the river and it was actually quite good!

That's it for Manitoba for now as I would be driving into Saskatchewan the next day, but I'll explore the central/north areas on my way back.

Feature Project: Waterton National Park

Rebuild of Civil Infrastructure

In 2022, the Southwest and Midwest Design & Construction team completed an important restoration project in Waterton National Park, Alberta, known as the Crandell Lake Campground Kenow Wildfire Rebuild.

One of our more unique construction projects, this endeavor was classified as a rebuild of civil infrastructure, with the project falling under a federal government contract with Parks Canada.

We’ve had the pleasure of working on a few parks-focused construction projects within the last few years, and the beauty of this location was no exception! Located at the junction of the beautiful Alberta prairies and the Rocky Mountains, Waterton Lakes National Park is a fabulous destination for year-round adventure and fun. Project Details

Sector: Federal Government Location: Waterton National Park Timeline: This project started in 2021 and was completed in 2022.

The project primarily involved civil infrastructure work, with a focus on underground services. At a glance, the project scope entailed the installation and renovation of septic fields, electrical systems, water infrastructure, and washrooms.

The project scope was later expanded to include additional work, which we were able to easily accommodate thanks to the adaptability and expertise of the SWMW team.

The success of the Crandell Lake Campground Kenow Wildfire Rebuild project was contingent upon several key requirements, including:

Environmental Preservation

The project required an exceptionally high level of environmental protection during construction. This encompassed safeguarding a variety of ecological elements, such as a protected fish habitat in the creek, bird nesting areas, rare plant preservation, and vigilant detection and management of noxious weeds. The team also had to be sensitive to the area's archaeological significance as it served as winter hunting grounds for local Indigenous tribes.

Timeline & Weather Concerns

Numerous external factors added complexity to our project, including seasonal access restrictions, avalanche warnings, and delays due to weather conditions. Additionally, the project needed to align with bird nesting periods, which further underlined the need for meticulous planning and execution.

The aggressive work schedule had to fit within a one-year timeframe, which was substantially shortened by the harsh winter season, characterized by heavy snowpack that limited access to the site. As experienced general contractors, this is simply something we bake into the project scope and do our very best to mitigate during project progress.
