Cancer Update/ Finding the Good in Today pt 13

If you don’t know me, hey there I'm B and I have sarcoma.

In December of last year Technodad gave me the challenge of finding one good thing in every day, no matter how small. Since then I've been sharing my list of good things from the last month.

I've been struggling to have good months. It’s hard. I am trying. That's what's important.

October's Good Things:

I am very sick. I didn't prewrite at all this month. I am sorry if none of this makes sense. It's 9pm and I'm kinda dizzy even laying down. Send anti-stomach bug vibes my way please. In the words of Reddit user u/StrawberryGS I am "just strong enough to be miserable."

I did it. I did the list.

Conventionally, cancer diagnostic procedures have been known for their invasive nature and enormous cost. However, researchers from KAIST and Korea University have developed a novel diagnostic approach that combines AI and innovative technology for an affordable, accessible, and non-invasive diagnosis of multiple types of cancer at an early stage under high resolution. In the study, small vesicles released by cancer cells were analyzed using Exosome-SERS and AI to achieve promising outcomes in the early detection of various types of cancers with a high degree of accuracy. This breakthrough study could significantly impact cancer diagnosis and monitoring, transforming current practices and offering optimism for cancer patients.

While movies and television shows today are highly digitized, they were at one time all produced on film strips. Each reel held a piece of entertainment that had many hours worth of work poured into it, but once the studios were finished with them, they were set to be discarded under close supervision. Thankfully, not all of them were destroyed...

Obtained from a private collector, this limited edition selection from the Breaking Bad pilot is beautifully mounted for display, featuring a film cell that has been carefully cut from the original reel. The one I have also happens to be from a critical scene in that premiere episode: Walter White receiving his cancer diagnosis – setting him on a path that would see him become the infamous Heisenberg. Just an amazing piece of film and television history! 🎞️

So I haven’t really talked about my cancer diagnosis yet here. This is probably gonna be rambly because I’m still processing a lot. It’s only been like a week, but time is meaningless now. Anyway, yea, like a week ago I got the confirmed diagnosis that I have thyroid cancer. It’s still pretty small and very treatable, so I’m not terribly worried about it. I’ve kind of been bouncing between numb “this is just one thing too many in the course of three months for me to feel anything” and relief that there’s something Real I can point to when I’m just mysteriously affflicted with malaise. Like. Ohhh I’m not lazy and unmotivated I HAVE FUCKING CANCER. Like seriously, this is such a relief in its way. I called in sick to work two days this week (and wasn’t feeling great the rest of the week either) and for once I felt no guilt and self-loathing over it because I had a good reason. It may sound a little fucked up, but I’ve honestly been wishing to have something like this for years. Just. A desire to be truly sick instead of just feeling randomly and invisibly like shit. Like I have no physical symptoms I could point to like nausea (that one is linked to a different illness, I.e my anxiety) or a sore throat. I’m just exhausted to the point of tears and lack any will to do anything, even get up and pee. And maybe it can’t be entirely attributed to the cancer, because I have no idea how long I’ve had it. And I have other things, invisible disabilities that also explain my issues. But. Nobody can argue with cancer. Like, even my asshole brain can’t be like “ok but maybe you’re just faking” because I saw the tumor on the screen! I know it’s there!

Anyway, everyone is very worried and concerned and asking how I’m doing and I’m like “GREAT!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!” But it’s hard to understand that so I’m sticking with “I’m still in shock” for easier understanding. So far my medical team is moving quickly and I think the process of curing it will not be too protracted, but if that changes my viewpoint will probably change too. I want this to be a low-stress diagnosis, and I’m cautiously optimistic it will be. Because I just cannot take one more major stressor.

My mom worked her whole life, was supposed to retire in 2016.

Got lung cancer. Never smoked, never around smokers. It was a cancer that early enough and the type you could just remove it and she'd be fine. No chemo needed.

She retired 2017. But then we had to take of my dad with his vascular dementia. That's another 5-6 years.

2022 My dad dies, we mourned and were lumps of useless depressed people.

2023 was supposed to be our year of rebirth.

Fix her knee, go did things, look into getting me more specialized help mentally, and we were going to go to the gym get physically healthy.

Then one year hasn't even passed fully since my dad being buried, and my mom has uterus cancer that's aggressive, needs surgery to remove like before, but now she needs chemo therapy and radiation.

Why are we in this sewer if life?

She worked, she saved people's lives as a registered nurse, she created a whole system to get blood serum tears made for people with this complex dry eye disease.

She should retire. Go do things, travel or whatever it is people do.

Here she's now been given a cancer with poor prognosis even if the surgery and treatment have good outcomes.

I mean there's all that "bucket list" bullshit talk and "use your time what god gives you".

Really? She's still got a bad one that needs replacing. She's behind the fucking ball through no fault of her own.

It's so unfair. Why?

I'm sure you can give a million reasons and all of them don't mean shit. Social class or corporate or different systems. Or whatever...

Those aren't answers, part of whole, maybe? Does that matter to the person who's life is in danger or shortened??

They just want to live. To get through it.

They just hope there is something good after all the suffering and that they're still alive to live it!

Scientists Developed a Novel AI Blood Test ‘DELFI’ for Early Detection of Liver Cancer

Scientists from Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center developed and used artificial intelligence blood testing technology. The new blood testing technology detected liver cancer in more than 80% of participants in a study of 724 people. The technology, which uses a machine learning algorithm to analyze blood samples, showed promise in a previous study for detecting lung cancer. The new study, reported in the journal Nature Medicine, found that the technology was able to detect liver cancer with high accuracy in a real-world setting.

Globally, liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality. Identifying individuals at high risks, such as those with cirrhosis and viral hepatitis, can improve survival rates, but current screening methods are inadequate.
