sooo i’m 6 weeks out from my carpal tunnel release surgery today and my recovery is going so well!! i have slight tenderness and numbness around the incision sites, and some tenderness in my wrists and hands generally. nothing overly concerning or unexpected considering i’ve had surgery and am now using my hands a LOT more than i did before. i’m certain i’ve experienced quite a bit of muscle loss because of this soreness, the weakness of my grip, and how easily they tire, BUT i can still feel my hands getting stronger all the time. best of all i no longer have chronic pain and my nerve damage is healing!!! i still get occasional tingles and spasms, which is normal as the nerves recover. i’m so grateful to my surgeon and the NHS and everyone involved in my care (professional and otherwise)

The Uncomfortable Step to Healing You Likely Didn't Consider
The Uncomfortable Step to Healing You Likely Didn’t Consider
Whether the wound is visible or not I left the surgery center, with molded cardboard splints, bandages, two substantial Ace wraps, and a sling supporting my right hand and wrist. The dressing was so thick, I could punch a wall and be spared injury. But I wouldn’t. Instead, I kept my hand across my heart — even when the sling slipped — as if saying the Pledge of Allegiance. I followed…

Carpal Tunnel Surgery : Procedure
Tumblr media
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and fingers. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, carpal tunnel release surgery becomes a viable option. Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. This article provides a comprehensive overview of carpal tunnel release surgery, including its indications, surgical techniques, postoperative care, potential risks, and expected outcomes.
Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed as it passes through the carpal tunnel—a narrow passageway in the wrist. The compression of the median nerve leads to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. CTS is often caused by repetitive hand movements, wrist injuries, certain medical conditions (such as diabetes or arthritis), or anatomical factors that narrow the carpal tunnel.
Indications for Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery
Carpal tunnel release surgery may be recommended for individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome who experience persistent symptoms that significantly affect their daily activities and quality of life. Candidates for surgery typically have failed conservative treatments, including wrist splinting, medications, and corticosteroid injections. Diagnostic tests such as nerve conduction studies may be conducted to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of nerve compression.
Surgical Techniques
Carpal tunnel release surgery can be performed using two main techniques: open carpal tunnel release and endoscopic carpal tunnel release.
Open Carpal Tunnel Release: In this traditional approach, the surgeon makes an incision in the palm of the hand to access the carpal tunnel. The transverse carpal ligament, which forms the roof of the carpal tunnel, is then divided, relieving pressure on the median nerve.
Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release: This minimally invasive technique involves the use of a small endoscope—a thin tube with a camera—to visualize the carpal tunnel. The surgeon makes one or two small incisions and inserts the endoscope to guide the release of the transverse carpal ligament using specialized instruments.
Postoperative Care and Rehabilitation
Following carpal tunnel release surgery, proper postoperative care and rehabilitation are essential for optimal recovery and symptom relief. The hand may be bandaged or placed in a splint initially to protect the surgical site. Physical therapy or hand therapy may be recommended to promote healing, reduce swelling, and restore hand function. Rehabilitation exercises focus on improving grip strength, range of motion, and flexibility. Patients are typically encouraged to resume light activities soon after surgery, with gradual progression under the guidance of their healthcare provider.
Potential Risks and Complications
Carpal tunnel release surgery is generally safe, but like any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks and potential complications. These may include infection, bleeding, nerve or blood vessel injury, stiffness, scarring, incomplete relief of symptoms, or recurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome. However, serious complications are rare, and the vast majority of patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms and hand function.
Expected Outcomes
Carpal tunnel release surgery has a high success rate in relieving symptoms and restoring hand function. Most patients experience immediate relief from pain and numbness following surgery, while others may take some time to fully recover. The majority of individuals can resume normal daily activities and return to work without significant limitations. Full recovery can vary depending on the severity of the condition, individual healing capacity, and adherence to postoperative rehabilitation.
Cost in India
The cost of carpal tunnel release surgery in India varies depending on several factors such as the city, hospital, surgeon’s experience, and the complexity of the case. On average, the cost of carpal tunnel release surgery in India ranges from $800 to $1,500 USD.
In metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, the cost may be slightly higher compared to smaller cities. The price typically includes pre-operative evaluations, surgeon’s fees, anesthesia charges, operating room costs, and post-operative care.
Conclusion
Carpal tunnel release surgery is a highly effective treatment option for individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome who have not responded to conservative treatments. By relieving pressure on the median nerve, this surgical procedure can alleviate pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand, restoring hand function and improving overall quality of life. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, consult with a hand surgeon to discuss your treatment options and determine if carpal tunnel release surgery is appropriate for your specific condition.

so i’m coming up to 4 months post carpal tunnel release surgery!! i have someone on discord a run down of my surgery experience and have inspired myself to make an update post
i’ve regained so much sensation it’s amazing! the very tip of my index finger is still totally numb, but my other fingers are much better. my dexterity and strength is also improving a lot right now, especially in my left hand. left hand is perfect flawless pain free *touch wood
miss right hand however is not doing as well. nothing like what i had before but it’s enough to cause me discomfort and make me wince and it’s really hard to feel okay about it! but it is okay. it’s called pillar pain and it’s pretty normal after CTS surgery, but it’s still scary. i also have a smallish lump of scar tissue in my right hand which i think is contributing to the pain, which is centred around my pinky & ring fingers and that side of my hand.
i’m trying to knead the scar tissue gently and to do more with my left which is kinda hard cos i’m right handed but i am ambidextrous for some things so it’s not too hard to adapt.
overall i feel i’m recovering really well and i’m very happy with my results, i just need to keep looking after my hands and wrists and strengthening them

actually speaking of that "everything i love causes carpal tunnel" shirt i know! a muscle that causes carpal tunnel-like symptoms!
the bad news is that it's the underside of the shoulder blade, but the good news is that once you figure out how to reach it, it's quite easy to release!
anyways meet the subcapularis
Tumblr media
(all images taken from Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction (3rd Edition) by Travell et al)
the subcapularis helps pull the shoulder forward and rotate it inwards, meaning it's involved in many activities which cause the much dreaded carpal tunnel--yes, even though it's nowhere near the wrist. the anatomy of the shoulder makes it easy for nerves and vessels to get compressed, causing all sorts of fun symptoms like pain, tingling, and cold fingers.
this is the referred symptom zone:
Tumblr media
obligatory i am not a doctor, just very autistic about musculoskeletal pain, and can't guarantee this massage will help your carpal tunnel symptoms, but I will say that uhhh every time I do this for myself i can feel all blood and sensation rush back into my arm, and it's always best to try massage before more invasive stuff like surgery
--
1. Find a spot where you can sit, feet planted on the ground, and lean forward and rest your head on something with your arm hanging down between your legs. This will slide the shoulder blade to the side of the ribs, where you can reach the underside.
Tumblr media
2. Above is what the subcapularis looks like with the surrounding muscles. Using your fingertips (you might wanna cut your nails) or your thumb if preferred, find the bony edge of the shoulder blade, and start poking around the underside.
3. You'll most likely only be able to reach the edge of the muscle, but that's enough! When you press into it, you will probably feel like you're reproducing your symptoms. Don't worry; you aren't hurting yourself and in fact this means you're in the right spot! Massage it gently, enough to feel it but not enough to wince, until you can't find anymore painful spots (or until you feel better, sometimes you can't get it all in one session).
3.5. If your pain increases overall, don't do it. Though pressure should elicit symptoms, this type of massage should provide pretty immediate relief, and if it doesn't then either some other muscle(s) is involved or it's not muscle related at all.
4. Finish up by rolling your shoulder back, like you're stretching out your chest/reaching behind you, a few times. It's normal to hear clicking--good, actually, that's the sound of your body realigning.
5. I recommend doing this at least daily, even after the symptoms have eased, until it's no longer sensitive to massage. Keep in mind that this muscle has been overused, and that the muscles that oppose it have weakened. It will keep trying to tighten up again until the weakened muscles have recovered, so you need to actively treat it and keep an eye out for habits that cause you to roll the shoulder forward.
And that's it! If you intend to resume carpal tunnel inducing activities ASAP, see if you can take a moment every 30 minutes or so to do a quick shoulder stretch. This helps prevent the muscle from tightening, and you only need to spend moments to do so. Quick breaks like this actually go a long way towards preventing injury, and help you keep working without interrupting the flow to go do some body maintenance :P

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi Tumblr!
I logged da fuck off at some point and will continue to be very much so not on social media! Believe me when I tell you life is better on the other side.
I do want to pop in with a life update for the curious!
I'm out here in Durham, NC, and three years after moving here with Shelby and Brian, I can confidently say there isn't a place in the world I'd rather put my roots down.
I never knew what actual community looked or felt like until I came here. I'd made friends in town everywhere I'd lived, of course, and we would go out to eat or on a vacation, visit a gallery or something, but in Durham it's just different. Looking out the window during a car ride, chatting with a stranger in a grocery store, checking out a thrift shop or going to the library, I find myself declaring "I love living here..." the same compulsive way I tell my partners I love them. Durham isn't just a place I live, it's where I belong.
I've been calling myself an ex-cartoonist, and preaching the nightmare of trying to make art for infinite-profit focused megacorps. It's not that I didn't love making cartoons, it's that I did. It may not be that way for everyone, but for me, working a job I loved meant I was working every second of my life. Being an artist is a core part of my heart and soul, and near the end, I had become so burnt out I would spend hours just trying to start doing the work I used to fly out of bed excited to do.
So I did some of this and that, worked a retail job that fucked my hands up so bad that I had to have double carpal tunnel release surgery. 29 years as an artist and I get carpal tunnel from hefting around boxes in a warehouse!
Since then, I've pivoted into building a career as a graphic designer. (And I'm learning web dev too!) I'm getting involved in the local nonprofit scene, meeting so many incredible people and finding so many cool and exciting opportunities to focus my design work on community awareness, nonprofits, small businesses!! I didn't expect that to be so viable for a Graphic Designer. I had the misconception for a long time that I'd have to put my creative sensibilities aside for more dry, sensible corporate phooey. But there's so much more. Graphic design is truly a delight and a challenge! I have always enjoyed thinking critically about all forms of human creation. Why am I so drawn to this book cover? What makes that building so weird? Why do these casserole mix boxes piss me off? Why does that person's outfit look so fucking awesome?
Taking those thoughts and using them to inform how I approach design is an entirely different beast from animating and illustrating. I'm fighting for my life out there formatting text, morphing vectors and and scooting things around a comp until it works. A picture's worth a thousand words, but you don't have space for a thousand words in a graphic design. Condense! Condense! It's challenging, and a lot of fun.
Working as a cartoonist was my dream come true, and I am forever proud of and thankful for the part I have played in the history of animation and queer representation in entertainment. I had the privilege of having the life crisis I had at 21— "I never thought I'd get this far. What more could I want? What do I do now?"
Well, a decade later I confidently know what comes after having my dreams come true. I get older, and I experience new things, meet new people, struggle paying bills, endure all kinds of misfortunes and problems, and come out the other side astounded and proud to have survived it. Grow closer to my family friends and community as the years deepen our history together, and just be amazed and thankful that I made it this far, over and over.
It's funny being called old by my younger friends, because I have never felt so young in my life! I JUST cracked 30. There are so many things I haven't done yet, and so many things I don't know that I don't know yet. And I have the power to take ALL of this and to create art about it. Hopy shit!
Speaking of making art and sharing it, one of the reasons I'm excited to be learning web dev is so I can carve out places online where I can share anything and everything I want to. Media Crit, comics, essays, comics, illos, however I want to present it. I'll share it when I get the site running. Or maybe I wont and you'll have to find it by chance.
And of course, I'm still actively writing Neokosmos with Shelby and Brian, and doing other little things here and there. :) See ya when I see ya, Danny

JUJUTSU KAISEN’S ANATOMY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part II of this cute lil ask right here
A/N: Shit. You just graduated med school. And today…people expect you to…doctor? Mom come pick us up, we’re SCARED (real thought on my first day of residency).
S/N: Meet your first year surgical residency class. Undifferentiated little stem cells. The bottom of the surgical food chain. First shift last 36 hours and you work every second night until you drop.
All you know is that you like to cut. Where/what/how that cutting comes will be decided later. Everyone has an idea of their subspecialty but…shit happens, preferences change and sometimes the spleen just bleeds for no fucking reason at 4 am when you’ve gotten 30 minutes of sleep in the last 3 days and you have to—what? Sorry. Forgive me.
Let’s get into it.
For the love of God, interns — pick up your pagers.
SURGICAL INTERNS ON CALL
Dr. Yuji Itadori
Specialty Interest: ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY
Don’t tell Dr. Sukuna about this but who here is shocked. This sack of muscles THROWS SUVS AT HIS MORTAL ENEMIES ON A RANDOM TUESDAY NIGHT??? Please???? He also does shit like watch Wormo-Man parts I-V and this is peak orthopod behavior. Yuji definitely has contests with his patients on rounds who can crush the cranberry juice or protein shakes the fastest. Spoiler, he always lets the patient win.
Everyone thinks he’s just joking around but it’s his way of getting post op patients to get their nutrition in. He’s a very thoughtful doctor, even though people assume he’s no thoughts just vibes between his eyes.
Dr. Megumi Fushiguro
Specialty Interest: HAND SURGERY (can be achieved via Ortho or plastics)
Hand surgeons are a different BREED. Do me a favor and google “hand anatomy.” Not only will you find like 400 bones, there are 7,000 tiny tendons, lumbricals, digital arteries, veins and nerves all packed into the little mitts we take for granted. And to add insult to injury — all of the muscles and tendons are in latin. Like whoever decided that please take your seat on this one way train to hell :)
Nevertheless, Dr. Geto spotted Dr. Fushiguro on day ONE of intern year. How meticulous and neat he is. How intelligent he is in the O.R. As an intern, Megumi broke the record for the fastest carpal tunnel release for residents (4 minutes, 35 seconds — not faster than mine though, 3 mins, 52 seconds over here big dawg). Suguru is Megumi’s mentor within the first week. Two peas in one moody brunette, pod.
Dr. Nobara Kugisaki
Specialty Interest: TRAUMA SURGERY
Nobara is 100% resistant to the Satoru Gojo, MD charm. Unlike the rest of the residents, she isn’t squeezing into Dr. Gojo’s trauma ORs just to graze his gloved hand with theirs. Or make eyes over the surgical masks. No, Nobara did her first cricothyrotomy and became HOOKED. The day she had to climb on the gurney to tie off a patient’s external jugulars because after coding and ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) they were SPURTING out of the large pipes in their neck — she was sold. Trauma surgery through and through.
Real story btw. It was insane. Whirlwind of a day from the trauma bay to the OR to the ice cream we all scarfed down after because we won that day. And you don’t win every day. So the days you get to tell the Angel of Death to fuck off, you savor them.
Dr. Maki Zenin
Specialty Interest: VASCULAR SURGERY
Little known fact about vascular surgeons is that they are gangster as fuck. Hear me out. They like the blood PAPER thin, right? Small, rusty pipes need to get fluid through, so thin the fluid out as much as possible. Meaning patients are on aspirin, lovenox, heparin, and every other anticoagulant known to man.
Everyone else with a working amygdala is scared to DEATH of these patients bleeding because you look at them sideways and suddenly hemorrhage everywhere. Not vascular surgeons and not Maki Zenin. “Aorta ruptured..? No prob, just sew it up with a couple stitches. What—like it’s hard?” - Every Vascular Surgeon ever. Maki just gives unhinged-unbothered-let-them-bleed energy to me. Plus vascular surgeons do all of the amputations. Maki is doing that with her cursed tools and scrubbing in with hand sanitizer only. Period.
Dr. Yuta Okkotsu
Specialty Interest: TRANSPLANT SURGERY
The OG lover boy is NO different in this AU. He is sentimental. He cries with patients. Dr. Nanami met him during the first month of his residency and immediately took him under his wing. Yuta is always the last to leave the anatomy lab, making sure to stitch the donors completely closed — even though no one will see. When asked why he spends hours post call doing it, he says: “Because they deserve respect until the very end.” Nanami And Yuta are a perfect match. After Yuta’s first liver transplant, Nanami takes him to the same hill he lays on by the airport. They both say goodbye to the donor together.
Dr. Toge Inumaki
Specialty Interest: ….he switched to PSYCHIATRY, still tight with the surgical interns though.
Hello, please this is also obvious. Inumaki is the only one in the group who can listen intently for hours without interruptions lmao. He saw that aggressive surgery shit and said absolutely not I’ll take my talents ELSEWHERE 😂
And you know, funnily enough, a good majority of surgeons ALSO were torn between picking surg vs psychiatry. My mentor told me that its because its as invasive, just without the scalpel. The rest of us meatheads just like the scalpel a little too much to put it down.

He is the hospital emotional support animal.

E/N: Alright interns. Do your best not to kill anyone. And if your chief resident (me) is sleeping, don’t page me. And if you do page me the patient better be knocking on heaven’s gates. And if they are knocking on heaven’s gates, they better not have crossed into the bright light before I get there.
Real E/N: Kidding. I am so full of shit lol. I am the senior that brings my juniors cafecitos and treats and takes their pager to let them get some well deserved rest.
Don’t be late to your OR cases, Shoo!
