Gaming Hot Take of the Day: 7/10 is actually a pretty good score. I know we’ve all seen the meta critic meme about how anything under an 80 is deemed a failure, but like 7/10 is 70%. That is above average. That’s literally above the midpoint of 50%.

Like when I hear 7/10 I hear “this is an overall good game, but there’s possibly a gameplay or story elements that’s annoying” or “this idea could’ve done more with it” or “this is a solid narrative but a character weighs it down.”

Some of my favorite games are 7/10. Love Castlevania Lords of Shadows, great art direction, fun combat, and a pretty solid cinematic story. But it’s camera is locked and there are levels that feel like half levels and probably should’ve been part of a bigger one. Or like Persona 4: this is a great mystery filled with amazing style, combat, and characters, however some character arcs can feel a bit regressive and the dungeons can begin to drag while having some inexplicable difficulty spikes.

These games are not bad. In fact they’re far from it. Still flawed and have stuff that can damage the experience. They are 7/10s in my opinion.

I understand that there are some franchise fans that take any rating under perfect a slight, but I feel like 7/10 is not close to failure. But maybe that’s just me. I’ll hear 7/10 and hear, maybe I’ll check that out.

Maybe some people have to get meaner and start calling things 1-5/10?
