all these Laws of Attraction (2023) things flying around are making my desire to re-watch Khun Chai SKYROCKET. I don't have time! But the heart wants.

(If you haven't watched it yet, what's stopping you? it's the love child of a typical telenovela-style Thai lakorn, a wuxia show, and a historical BL show, and it's FANTASTIC. it's historical! it's got family politics! actual politics! a huge cool ensemble of characters! fantastic sibling relationships! MAGIC! It's on youtube -- with subs! the first episode is 95% exposition and has a content warning list that's at least eight items long, but I promise a) it gets better after that b) you will get SUCKED IN.

I'm not selling this well but it legitimately was one of my top five favourite things that aired in 2022, so if you've heard or read about other faves of mine and thought, oh, this person has acceptable taste? give it a shot.

Again: It's 17 episodes, on youtube in full, and it has both English and Thai subtitles available. The theme song is sung by Nunew and the MV hit 10M views on youtube within two weeks.

I'm not even making you go try to find it yourself. Here's ep 1. Have fun.

Ep 1 contains instances of: homophobia, forced outing, suicide (on screen and graphic), attempted murder of a child, corporal punishment of a child, snakes (bad cgi).

Looking up how to write in Hindi for a picture I was thinking of making, and Hindi is such a pretty language to look at! And it's actually pretty easy to understand what letters are what! Though I am using an alphabet chart since I don't know the letters myself, it's cool to try and figure out what a word is using the chart.

Pronouns, my beloved!

Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏

นี่คุณจะไม่เลือกผมจริง ๆ ใช่ไหม /nee, khun ja mai leuuak pom jing jing chai mai?/

-> คุณ /khun/ = polite, formal 2nd pers. pronoun -> ผม /pom/ = polite, formal, respectful male 1st pers. pronoun

As Mahasamut is the younger one, he might just keep using ผม /pom/ throughout the entire show, just as Sky did in LITA. What he calls Tongrak is surely gonna change though! คุณ /khun/ feels too distant for P'May characters - even LomNuea in Wedding Plan, who met in a professional context and long kept using คุณ /khun/, ended up switching to the more familiar and informal พี่ /phi/ to refer to Lom.

So my predictions include:

a variation on his name, e.g. Rak, instead of any pronoun (like Prapai calling Sky just Sky, no pronouns), or later down the line maybe just ที่รัก /thee rak/ (= lit. beloved, comparable to darling, honey etc.) as it's sweet and would be a lovely switcheroo from Tongrak ต้องรัก /dtawng rak/ (= have to love)

a more intimate pronoun like เธอ /ter/ (based on YiwaMarine from Wedding Plan foregoing seniority by having younger Rine call her older girlfriend เธอ /ter/ for most of the show)

or simply พี่ /phi/ (as a 2nd pers. pronoun) which- I was just considering how that might not be sweet enough for a P'May top but then the sheer potential of P'Rak พี่รัก /phi rak/ sounding so close to ที่รัก /thee rak/ occurred to me and now I'm gonna need that to happen!!

I love this choice so much! 1) Because both ฉัน /chan/ and นาย /naai/ rarely make an appearance in BL, from male characters, even though they delight me every time I do hear it in a BL (e.g. NuerSyn in Cutie Pie calling each other นาย /naai/ for a good long while), and 2) because ฉัน /chan/ can give both Mafia Boss (as can นาย /naai/) as well as Sassy and no, I shan't elaborate 5555

My prediction is that these too might change. ฉัน /chan/ here feels like- attitude? almost? Like both a level of self-confidence as well as some sass so I'd wager that mellows out into:

พี่ /phi/ (as a 1st pers. pronoun)

or he might just as well keep using ฉัน /chan/ (if paired with เธอ /ter/ for example that's like prime romance trope right there lol)

or, which I think is most likely, he'll just use his own name or variation thereof, e.g. Rak.

I remember seeing Peat tweet something aaaages ago when the announcement for Love Sea first dropped where he called Fort 'Mut' -

/diiao juuhr gan loei, ai moot/ = See you then, Ai'Mut!

Except this is spelled differently from Mahasamut's name because หมุด /moot/ (= pin/needle) is the phonemic spelling of the last syllable in มหาสมุทร /ma haa sa moot/. So! I think it's entirely possible that Tongrak's gonna call him Mut หมุด or Nong Mut น้องหมุด in the future.

คุณต้องรักมหาสมุทร /khun dtawng rak mahaa samoot/

= Khun Tongrak Mahasamut = You have to love the ocean. = You have to love me.

The Thai title is ต้องรักมหาสมุทร /dtawng rak mahaa samoot/ = TongrakMahasamut; Gotta Love the Sea; Gotta Love Mahasamut

Untranslatable words (part 2)

Here are part 1 and part 3. I have also made other posts with untranslatable words in Spanish and German.

Cook Islands Māori: papakata (to have one leg shorter than the other)

Czech: prozvonit (to call a cellphone only to have it ring once so that the other person calls back, allowing the caller not to spend money on minutes)

Finnish: tokka (a large herd, especially of reindeer)

Interesting things I’ve learned from The Eclipse novel, Part 2:

The Cafe for All is actually an ice cream shop called Y Utopia (or BL Utopia)

Aye makes Akk come untouched in the school hallway before they’ve even kissed

Kan is the one who was close to Dika—not Akk

Akk was fully aware he was gay prior to the start of the novel and had even planned to come out himself until he started getting harassed for his sexuality by Master Kalakul, the PE teacher

Gender and sexuality are so inextricably linked in both Thai culture and Akk's mind that coming out as gay is synonymous with renouncing his gender as a man. You've probably heard BL characters refer to straight men as "pôo chaai jing," literally "real men." I always thought that was simply slang, but it's not. Gay people are considered part of Thailand's third gender and are therefore no longer considered "real men."

This continues to be a liiiittle slow at times, but when it flows? it FLOWS. Also it's very, very pretty still, the framing and the shots are really nice.

That getting changed montage was a work of art, but also: props to Jom; I did NOT manage to figure out how to put those trousers on the one time I had the chance and had to get help. And speaking of clothes, I cannot place this-- from Khun Yai's mother's clothes I'd expect maybe the 1920s or even the Khun Chaai era (30s/40s), but from everyone else's I'd say much earlier … otoh some of the women's skirts show their knees, so what gives? Did they tell us the year and I just missed it? ALSO. Why was James wearing this extremely sporty and informal cap to an event that is probably not at all informal or sporty???

Lots of familiar faces this episode – Mae Prik (Akk's mother in The Eclipse), Khamtip (Annie's mother in Mama Gogo, Ying in Step by Step), Khun Lek (young Nabsip in Lovely Writer, young Mew in UMG), James (hot-headed rugby player with the brow and the gun in Bad Buddy) …

Had a good laugh at the food sequence because a) not an unreasonable reaction on Jom's part b) I'd try all of that anyway and c) curried steamed pig brain sausage / แอ็บอ่องออ is what defeated Tian in ATOTS, too.

Sapphics!!! Nothing going on (yet) to support that hypothesis but I'm sticking with it for now. And Phueng gets to be surprisingly vicious and to-the-point with her husband – I was not expecting that.

I would not want to be in Ming's position. He just wanted to help and all the one he's helped is doing is getting into trouble, much of which reflects badly on Ming. Bet Ming is rueing the day he scraped Jon up from the riverside, poor kid. Good of him to be like "kid gloves are off, you're learning to row a boat yourself gdi".

Jom needs to get better at committing to the "I'm getting flashes of memories but none of them make sense" bit, and at reading the room – I get that this is all freaky as hell, but the way he would not back down with who he thought was Jeeb? Not cool. She was clearly scared and uncomfortable.

This show does a lot of the explaining to the audience stuff really well. I love the, whatsit, peekaboo framing? and also. Hope the piglet is SO cute. Help.

I was wondering about the contextual difference between calling a person P vs (what sounds to my very untrained ear as) Pshy

I have heard Pshy used in the context of essentially saying 'he's a man' (vs Pying or similar for a woman) but it also seems to be used to clarify brother (biologically) rather than just P translating as bro/brother.

I've heard it used a few times ("he's my brother, my biological brother, my actual brother, we have the same parents," are all ways it has been translated) (or nongshy for younger I think).

I just want to understand what the difference is and it's hard to look it up when I don't know the right lettering/transaltion sorry!

I think you might be confused between two different words. The word that means older sibling, specifically male, is พี่ชาย(pêe chaai—transliteration by thai2english), and the word that means "man" (sex) is ผู้ชาย(pôo chaai).

The word for older sister is พี่สาว(pêe săao), and the word for woman is ผู้หญิง(pôo yĭng).

พี่-P, or, as I usually spell this, Phi, means an older sibling or person in the older sibling age range. While ชาย-shy or chai (my usual spelling for this word) means male.

So the difference between Phichai and just Phi is mainly that Phichai is specific about the sex of the person referred to, while Phi is gender neutral.

There are some others, but they are not that big and clear.

For example, when put in front of a name, Phi A would usually mean that A is that Phi's name, while Phichai A would usually refer to A's older brother.

But it's not a hard rule, and by usually, I mean in my experience with people in my circle. So😆

They were arguably my first major OTP after I first learned what that means lol I love a flirty dynamic, bickering, tragic fated lovers, and time travel! My time in the Doctor Who fandom was when I first taught myself how to gif and use photoshop (back when I still had it...) so there's a bunch of gifsets and edits still on my blog from around then, at least one of which I remember featuring this ship!

3) To no one's surprise, I gotta nod along to one of @airenyah 's choices: Destiel - Dean and Castiel (Supernatural)

The amount of fics I read...! I even still have a 9 year old inactive sideblog that I made, posted a lot on, and then abandoned all within the span of one year lmao

was too busy chanting "namtan, namtan" in my head to focus on the plot but on second watch it seems she's the twin of film's characters girlfriend who gets into a car accident? so namtan takes her place when film shows up and doesn't realize who she is? i think? there also is a second couple...which might be the twin and ciize (obviously this is where i got lost)

Sounds like I'm in for a lesbian soap opera but I'm excited!! Was into Khun chaai a lot even though I got a life's worth of cicada sex potions.
