A SouMako Essay in 2024...
It took me a long time but I finally caught up with free! and remembered why Tachibana makoto is the man of my dreams. But on my watch I realized as it went on Makoto and Souske interact a bit more post Eternal Summer?? The chemistry they have is actually really sweet… and flows naturally well. although it’s def not as much as I would like… here’s why Tachibana Makoto and Yamazaki Sousuke are actually kind of perfect for each other? Sorry it got way longer than I meant it to be LOL

They balance each other out
Makoto’s sweet, clumsy gentleness complements Sousuke’s no-nonsense, grounded demeanor. Makoto’s kind and nurturing nature has a way of softening Sousuke’s tough exterior and easing his tension, while Sousuke’s firm, straightforward attitude helps ground Makoto, counteracting his tendency to overthink and shoulder everyone else’s feelings.
Together, they create a dynamic that is equal parts comforting and steadying, bringing out the best in each other.
They naturally look out for each other
Makoto looking out for Sousuke’s shoulder even though he barely knew the guy back in eternal summer. Plus the most precious sweetheart face when he finds out sousuke's shoulder was a success.... if sousuke say that face he'd grumble and be like "don't make such a big deal out of it..." but would appreciate how happy makoto was....

Even helping Sousuke with rehab hello?? i'm going to talk about that more later but it's very fitting the person who was worried about sousuke's shoulder gets to be the one to help him too!
In the Final Stroke part 2 Sousuke is telling Haru Makoto is worried for him. One, probably to tell Haru to chill out and relax, but two because Haru should know that Makoto being worried means Makoto is worried. It’s Makoto for Christ sake. And Sousuke’s probably spent enough time with the guy to know how much he thinks about Haru. Sousuke is telling Haru this for both Makoto and Haru’s benefits.

Unfortunately this is not part of the show/movies but part of the coco’s 2021 collab is short but shows why those makoto and sousuke balance so well. Natsuya asks Makoto to help him recruit 8 people for the summer cafe. Makoto was able to recruit two people, but he didn’t want to bother the others because they had swim practice. So the guy tries to work an understaffed cafe himself!! Sousuke, who sees poor Makoto frantic about hiring people who APPROACHES Makoto and he’s like “hey let me help you out.” And volunteers his time!! BUT he’s also like “and I’ll ask rin too Makoto. Why don’t you ask Haru?” And makoto’s all worried about them having practice. But practical Sousuke is just like “why don’t we just ask? It won’t hurt.” (source)
I think here…. Sousuke’s levelheadedness was able to calm Makoto and find a solution that works better for him. Sousuke noticed that Makoto was about self sacrifice (YET AGAIN) but Sousuke came with a new solution since Makoto was thinking about everyone’s feelings again instead of thinking about his own wellbeing!!
Here Sousuke is both looking out for Makoto AND balancing him out. All while finding a solution that doesn’t make makoto sacrifice himself.
They admire and respect each other
Makoto, when he first saw Sousuke at the garden, they talk about Sousuke getting surgery and going back into swimming. To swim somewhere amazing because Sousuke just spilled his dreams to Makoto on the rooftop (romantic). Makoto calls Sousuke amazing because wow… going back into swimming and working hard. And Sousuke doesn’t even know how to react because Makoto gave him such a genuine compliment to the point where Makoto even challenges him.


And then Sousuke immediately asks him out on a date out to eat, basically LOL.

Sousuke’s admirations are unfortunately not in the anime either but these desktop chibis where Sousuke compliments makoto in ALL of them and makoto does not know how to respond to said compliments. Sousuke's looking at Makoto's muscles, his strength in swimming, and his shooting skills:
Sousuke – “Hah, you’re pretty good at this, Makoto.” Makoto – “I have some confidence in gunshooting games.” Sousuke – “Makoto, your swimming style is pretty wild.” Makoto – “Huh? Is that so? I can’t really tell myself…” Sousuke – “Makoto, you have really nice muscles, what kind of training do you do?” Makoto – “Umm… somehow my body just seems to build muscles easily.” (Source)
Sousuke calling Makoto big. Idk about you but from an athlete, that’s a compliment. LOL. But when Rei calls Makoto gentle, Sousuke says that a guy who swims with that hungry of a swimming style should not be called gentle. From an athlete who loves swimming... that's def a compliment LOL. (source)
Sousuke calling Makoto surprising. I think here he’s surprised about makoto’s competitive and cocky nature from the eternal summer ova. As Nao says Makoto is actually prudent, daring, stubborn, competitive and inhibitive. Which is the surprising/not gentle side of Makoto Sousuke is probably talking about with Haru. (source)
And Sousuke a competitive guy. He appreciates other competitive guys lol. I think Sousuke is quite pleased at Makoto's competitive drive.
They watch out for each other
Makoto literally takes Sousuke through rehab after his surgery. He trains him, takes his swim times, does whatever coaches do at a pool idk

Also in Coco's 2021, Makoto offers to do the dishes since Sousuke cooked a lot and Sousuke tells him NOT TO HURT HIMSELF CAUSE HE KNOWS MAKOTO IS CLUMSY HES JUST WASHING THE DISHES BUT HONESTLY SSK’S RIGHT…. Makoto needs someone to watch out for him… he’s a hazard sometimes… Showing Sousuke being worried about makoto's clumsiness AGAIN
Makoto thanks Sousuke for pushing him to ask more people and sousuke’s like “well if it’s just you Makoto everyone will worry” and makoto’s like “oh is it because I’m unreliable…?”
And Sousuke's like “you’re always doing the utmost for people Makoto. It’s that they couldn’t leave you alone, you know.” (source). Sousuke…….. are you talking for yourself….. the ever observant Sousuke notices the Makoto who’s always doing stuff for others volunteers and helps him get more people……. He couldn't stand watching makoto be all stressed out... Showing how sousuke's level headedness eases a frazzled Makoto and helped him find a solution!! (Like a good boyfriend LOLOL)
During Haru's race Sousuke noticed how worried Makoto is for Haru. He verbally tells Makoto to relax and lets him know that he's not alone in his feelings! But also noticing how worried Makoto was in the first place... Also look how cute they are in their official matching Mizuno jackets... (source)
They would be such sweethearts to each other but still be able to challenge each other
Those two work hard to look out for others and the people they love… of course they would look out for each other too…
Makoto I bet is so patient during rehab. He helped Sousuke bring his shoulder back into shape and had him swim on a national team. To swim with rin again. Sousuke knows how much makoto’s helped him. And that boy does not take friendship for granted.
I can’t help but to be so happy that makoto who was worried for him back in season two got to heal him and bring Sousuke back to his dream at the end (?) of the series. All while finding a dream for himself and coach professional swimmers! Which he’s very good at by the way!! So so proud of Coach Tachibana 😭😭 and Makoto puts them boys to work he's got Sousuke and Hiyori sweating


I wish this got longer scenes cause it’s such a pivotal moments in BOTH their careers but it was like “teach me how you move your body, makoto!” And makoto’s just like “of course!”
They would be so funny
They went bunny plushy shopping together for Kisumi's birthday, can you imagine what they even talked about? (source)They would probably take forever choosing one cause Makoto would try to think about what Kisumi would want and Sousuke’s like let’s choose any. And they bicker about it in the aisle and eventually Makoto wins cause of course the bunny has to be extra special. It’s a present, it has to seem like you thought about him! And Sousuke grumbles and picks the one that looks like Kisumi or something LOL
Sousuke cooks and Makoto is canonically bad at cooking/handling the kitchen. When they ate nabe with rin and haru sousuke saw the mushrooms and were like “why do these look like they were cut by demons…” and makoto’s all flustered and talking about how bad he was at cutting and then makoto says he made dessert. And Sousuke’s like oh wow is this tuna surimi?! It looks delicious! And Makoto’s like… actually it’s strawberry jello…. And Sousuke’s like…. "…. Sorry." (source)

When they went to the cake buffet (source) and makoto grabbed all those cakes and Sousuke’s like “you eat a lot…” because he’s so stunned how many cakes Makoto grabbed LOLOL my sweet tooth loving Makoto…. I bet they would go on cafe dates all the time… oh wait they do… with all their friends 🤣 they most def went by themselves before
Two people who have an intense amount of loyalty to their best friend… wishing to be the one that makes him have the drive he has… to be the one to save him…
Makoto’s love for Haru and Sousuke love for Rin are the two most important relationships in free! …. After Haru and Rin’s relationship. And that’s just what the series is. The competitive relationship between Haru and Rin. But here it leaves Makoto and Sousuke who love their friends with all their hearts, yearning for…? Someone to see them as an equal…? Idk what it is but that’s kyoani’s fault for not letting Sousuke and Makoto share the screen for more than 60 seconds at a time
I just rewatched the first final stroke movie. I can't believe makoto and sousuke both say such sweet and motivational words to haru and rin respectively together at the end credits!! Talking about how much they love and appreciate their them and the friendship that they have... I'm convinced Makoto made Sousuke do that omg LOLOL
Last point: Sousuke can probably carry Makoto. Or Makoto can carry Sousuke. Or both. I’m pretty sure both. They both deserve that for each other, congratulations to the happy couple!
Bonus: i'm pretty sure these two coordinated this attack on rin and haru. They're already doing couple hijinx...

Do you think in-universe that there's actual pokemon levels? If so, how do they measure it? And if not, how do they keep things like the battle facilities level-capped? I remember you mentioning before that you think battles are largely for show, and that in gym battles the leaders/trainers will basically "fight down" to whatever predetermined strength level they've trained their pokemon to fight at depending on how many badges a person has. And that basically they're not actually "fainting" from some kid's baby pokemon, they just have a set amount of damage they can take before they concede the win. Assuming I'm remembering correctly anyway.
But like... are those standards just arbitrary? I assume the various Leagues have rules about that kinda thing, so their gym leaders and Elite Four/Champions are trained rigorously (gym leaders more so, I think, because they'd have to learn eight different levels of difficulty by heart, whereas the Four and Champion only need to abide by one difficulty level). But in a battle facility or tournament, you're not just limiting what your pokemon are allowed to do, you're also somehow making sure that your opponents are doing the same, at the exact same difficulty level. If there were actual levels I think that'd be easier (although I'm still not sure of the actual mechanics of how it'd force them down to level 50 or whatever), but if there's no levels and it's all arbitrary, then literally how would they even tell or enforce it?
Or is this the kinda thing that's just me entirely overthinking video game mechanics that have no logical or reasonable in-universe explanation. Because maybe it's just because it's really late here, but I'm drawing a blank. Although, I guess the pokemon universe does have some mind-bogglingly advanced tech that would in no way work in ours, like Bill's machine that turned him into a clefairy or a functional doomsday device 4,000 years before the modern era or even just the PC system as a whole, so I guess if there are levels it'd make sense that there was some kind of tech that could measure and suppress them?
oooh, really tough question.
so your first paragraph summary is basically right lol—what makes most sense to me is if pokemon battles are like, for show, or honor duel type things, where they're—generally speaking—stopped long before the point where either party would do lasting harm to the other. (there are exceptions, like in the case of frenzied alphas or other certain wild battles, but usually if it's not a scenario that is legitimately life or death, they're not gonna fight like it is.) it's just a matter of demonstrating that one is stronger, and their opponent conceding. & yeah, the corollary that goes along with that is that gym leaders and other high level fighters really are, as they rightly should be, much more powerful at a baseline than you are when you fight them—but to make the fight fairer, they'll try to match strengths with you.
levels though. yeah, it's kind of a toughie. even if you don't assume the above, levels are kind of tough to make coherent in-universe. this might just be one of those situations where game mechanics sort of run up against inworld depiction, yeah, like when an npc tells you to press the B button to run? or the apparent metaphysical law of reality preventing anyone from having more than 6 pokemon on their team at once. it might be that in reality, "strength levels" (inc. not just xp levels but also EVs/IVs and that kind of thing, since some trainers (ingo again) have also shown that they can modulate those) are just sort of a thing a high-level trainer and their team gets a general feel for as they advance, and then maybe they have to do some extra training to actually do the moderation, but the general sense for different strength levels is already there. like, maybe it's not as granular as "okay, now be level 37," it's just "yeah put in like... 40% of your normal effort. great."
but then yeah, the idea that there's no hard and fast rule for it makes stuff like the battle subway kind of hard to explain. since like, there's no way to actually stop someone from cheating and going over 50, and if they do there's no actual Numbers for them to point to and say "no, you've gotta take it back a bit." they can only rely on vibes to determine whether someone isn't strength scaling appropriately? that seems like they wouldn't be a fan of that.
on the other hand i do love the idea that modern day pokemon people have invented some kind of machine that can just scan your pokemon and output a bunch of numerical summaries of their general stats. ooh, maybe that's one of the things a pokemon center machine is doing when you heal, it's giving them a lil blip and updating their info chip in the pokeball-or-however-it-works with their latest info. if it was anything that was actually enforcing a level standard i think it would have to be based around that, since modern pokemon are at least partially data based and i think it would make some kind of sense to be able to sort of. put checks on that data.
alternately, there's no actual physical limitations, it's just that if you try that you will be kicked out of whatever you're participating in. and there would probably be like, sports news drama about it, depending on whether you were participating in some kind of tournament. so people generally don't bc the payoffs of winning once aren't worth it when it's so immediately obvious to everyone that they're breaking the rules. (there could even be some kind of like, known scammer's/cheater's art of trying to just barely toe the line of "rule-breakingly strong" without anyone being able to strictly prove it and punish them for it. but for the most part that's more investment than people want to do for not a lot of gain, it's easier to just fight normally)
...but then the thing you always circle back around to when talking abt this is like. from the battle subway forwards, you're not just going down to 50, they can make you go up to 50 too. which is like, how the fuck, even. how are they juicing the fuck out of my level 20 starter to make them match with everyone else. which is why i feel like there might not be any physical in-world numbers about it, and it's just a matter of it being accepted that both opponents should play down to whatever the weakest party member is, and 50 happens to be the standard level the games represent that as for ease of calculation.
-ok wait a second i just went to check and according to bulba in post-bw games, like in the battle maison and further, they stop doing that scale-up-to-50 thing. it's just the fucking battle subway that does that?? hi?? hello?? out of universe i guess this makes sense from a gameplay perspective, since they're a much earlier-game and generally more accessible facility than other regions, so it's actually unlikely that a player would have a level 50 team when first boarding. in-universe, though?? what the hell are you guys doing over there???

MIT senior Elaine Siyu Liu doesn’t own an electric car, or any car. But she sees the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewables on the grid as two pieces of an energy puzzle she wants to solve.
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that the number of public and private EV charging ports nearly doubled in the past three years, and many more are in the works. Users expect to plug in at their convenience, charge up, and drive away. But what if the grid can’t handle it?
Electricity demand, long stagnant in the United States, has spiked due to EVs, data centers that drive artificial intelligence, and industry. Grid planners forecast an increase of 2.6 percent to 4.7 percent in electricity demand over the next five years, according to data reported to federal regulators. Everyone from EV charging-station operators to utility-system operators needs help navigating a system in flux.
That’s where Liu’s work comes in.
Liu, who is studying mathematics and electrical engineering and computer science (EECS), is interested in distribution — how to get electricity from a centralized location to consumers. “I see power systems as a good venue for theoretical research as an application tool,” she says. “I’m interested in it because I’m familiar with the optimization and probability techniques used to map this level of problem.”
Liu grew up in Beijing, then after middle school moved with her parents to Canada and enrolled in a prep school in Oakville, Ontario, 30 miles outside Toronto.
Liu stumbled upon an opportunity to take part in a regional math competition and eventually started a math club, but at the time, the school’s culture surrounding math surprised her. Being exposed to what seemed to be some students’ aversion to math, she says, “I don’t think my feelings about math changed. I think my feelings about how people feel about math changed.”
Liu brought her passion for math to MIT. The summer after her sophomore year, she took on the first of the two Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program projects she completed with electric power system expert Marija Ilić, a joint adjunct professor in EECS and a senior research scientist at the MIT Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems.
Predicting the grid
Since 2022, with the help of funding from the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), Liu has been working with Ilić on identifying ways in which the grid is challenged.
One factor is the addition of renewables to the energy pipeline. A gap in wind or sun might cause a lag in power generation. If this lag occurs during peak demand, it could mean trouble for a grid already taxed by extreme weather and other unforeseen events.
If you think of the grid as a network of dozens of interconnected parts, once an element in the network fails — say, a tree downs a transmission line — the electricity that used to go through that line needs to be rerouted. This may overload other lines, creating what’s known as a cascade failure.
“This all happens really quickly and has very large downstream effects,” Liu says. “Millions of people will have instant blackouts.”
Even if the system can handle a single downed line, Liu notes that “the nuance is that there are now a lot of renewables, and renewables are less predictable. You can’t predict a gap in wind or sun. When such things happen, there’s suddenly not enough generation and too much demand. So the same kind of failure would happen, but on a larger and more uncontrollable scale.”
Renewables’ varying output has the added complication of causing voltage fluctuations. “We plug in our devices expecting a voltage of 110, but because of oscillations, you will never get exactly 110,” Liu says. “So even when you can deliver enough electricity, if you can’t deliver it at the specific voltage level that is required, that’s a problem.”
Liu and Ilić are building a model to predict how and when the grid might fail. Lacking access to privatized data, Liu runs her models with European industry data and test cases made available to universities. “I have a fake power grid that I run my experiments on,” she says. “You can take the same tool and run it on the real power grid.”
Liu’s model predicts cascade failures as they evolve. Supply from a wind generator, for example, might drop precipitously over the course of an hour. The model analyzes which substations and which households will be affected. “After we know we need to do something, this prediction tool can enable system operators to strategically intervene ahead of time,” Liu says.
Dictating price and power
Last year, Liu turned her attention to EVs, which provide a different kind of challenge than renewables.
In 2022, S&P Global reported that lawmakers argued that the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) wholesale power rate structure was unfair for EV charging station operators.
In addition to operators paying by the kilowatt-hour, some also pay more for electricity during peak demand hours. Only a few EVs charging up during those hours could result in higher costs for the operator even if their overall energy use is low.
Anticipating how much power EVs will need is more complex than predicting energy needed for, say, heating and cooling. Unlike buildings, EVs move around, making it difficult to predict energy consumption at any given time. “If users don’t like the price at one charging station or how long the line is, they’ll go somewhere else,” Liu says. “Where to allocate EV chargers is a problem that a lot of people are dealing with right now.”
One approach would be for FERC to dictate to EV users when and where to charge and what price they’ll pay. To Liu, this isn’t an attractive option. “No one likes to be told what to do,” she says.
Liu is looking at optimizing a market-based solution that would be acceptable to top-level energy producers — wind and solar farms and nuclear plants — all the way down to the municipal aggregators that secure electricity at competitive rates and oversee distribution to the consumer.
Analyzing the location, movement, and behavior patterns of all the EVs driven daily in Boston and other major energy hubs, she notes, could help demand aggregators determine where to place EV chargers and how much to charge consumers, akin to Walmart deciding how much to mark up wholesale eggs in different markets.
Last year, Liu presented the work at MITEI’s annual research conference. This spring, Liu and Ilić are submitting a paper on the market optimization analysis to a journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Liu has come to terms with her early introduction to attitudes toward STEM that struck her as markedly different from those in China. She says, “I think the (prep) school had a very strong ‘math is for nerds’ vibe, especially for girls. There was a ‘why are you giving yourself more work?’ kind of mentality. But over time, I just learned to disregard that.”
After graduation, Liu, the only undergraduate researcher in Ilić’s MIT Electric Energy Systems Group, plans to apply to fellowships and graduate programs in EECS, applied math, and operations research.
Based on her analysis, Liu says that the market could effectively determine the price and availability of charging stations. Offering incentives for EV owners to charge during the day instead of at night when demand is high could help avoid grid overload and prevent extra costs to operators. “People would still retain the ability to go to a different charging station if they chose to,” she says. “I’m arguing that this works.”
