Gunpla: Completed Collection of Minis: Part 5: The Rest: Gundam Wing, Endless Waltz, Evangelion, Amaim Warrior at the Borderline, Sakura Wars

The final set of minis! Only a few more to go! I feel like i just did the pokerap after writing up these blog entries. Anyway, the two images above are roughly contiguous in real life, just at slightly different scales (Heero Yuy on the left is right next to the Peach amiibo on the right)

MG Sandrock: Quatre Raberba Winner

Another figurine finished with nuln oil. Also i believe this was one of the last figures i painted before i started using the magnifying goggles. Still turned out pretty decent imo. And of course, we have a pilot figure!

And of course, we got some shots of him in the cockpit. Realizing you can see some hair and dust in these images, alas. Nothing i can do now to fix them (I mean, i'm not getting into photo editing just for that, i think it kind of tells the human story of the conditions these mechs sit in too: out for months collecting dust. These were even dusted off before i photographed them but i guess i wasn't as thorough as i could have been!) Anyway this kit is pretty neat, and will also someday maybe get its own post. More below the cut

HG WF-02 Shenlong Gundam: Chang Wufei

So this is a kit i do not own, but the figure was given to me by my friend's partner (who i believe i have now hung out with enough to also call a friend). They must have had this kit years ago. Anyway, i made the base stand myself again too! This figure was kinda interesting to paint. The dragon pattern on his tank top was actually part of the sculpt. That being said, it was really hard to match, and i wasn't yet using the magnifying goggles top assist. I did have aqueous gold paint however. And surprisingly, there was an ANCIENT color guide for this kit! I did the best i could to translate it and it seems like it was still using paints that Mr. Hobby still sells today. Or at least, close approximants. Small flub: the eyes are kinda asymmetrical. Also, the way i finished him was i gave him a semi-gloss coat, then masked over (broadly) the gold part of the shirt, and then finished him with a flat coat. That way the flat coat doesn't ruin the sheen of the gold paint. This was definitely a fun one to paint. A much larger scale than i was used to!

HG OVA EW-2 1/100 Wing Gundam 0 Custom: Heero Yuy

I DO own this kit (but pictures will NOT be forthcoming. Maybe one day. it's currently in "storage"). This was one of the first larger figures i painted. There was no color guide, so i had to take my best shot at mixing colors. so I mixed the paints using some of what was leftover from the PGU mini painting and from the Spiricle Striker Mugen figurine painting (i need to write a blog post about that, as it's vaguely relevant to these mini painting posts!) I hit this boy with some super clear gloss, panel lined, then flatcoated. Badda bing bada boom. I do not know what scale this guy is at, i could not find anywhere it's stated. I'd guess maybe 1/24?

HG Spiricle Striker Mugen (Claris Type): Clarissa "Claris" Snowflake

This whole kit deserves its own post, and tbh i didn't think i was gonna include it here, but then i mentioned it above and now here we are. She was painted in Fall 2023 but she turned out better than most of the minis. The eyes are Water Slide Decals though (which means i successfully applied water slides over a painted surface!) I followed the color guide pretty well but i wasn't really sure how to paint some of the details. I struggled with "detail loss" through the paint here, but i think i managed to make it appear as good as i am gonna make it in the end. I also primed her in White, which made the detail loss worse (because it seems the white primer pools as it dries moreso than gray primer). BTW, this is 1/24 scale

HGLM 003 Evangelion 00: Rei Ayanami & Gendou Ikari

These have been finalized since the last time i posted them, mostly by applying Flat Coats. Rei has been panel lined though, which her suit kinda needs. Gendou's outfit is already dark and doesn't really warrant panel lining imo. I suspect the scale here is 1/24 but i cannot confirm. Also, there was no color guide so once again i winged it. I think it turned out pretty okay for winging the palette! Also, i like and know things about Evangelion and i know Gendou needs to stay far away from Rei. i'm kind of appalled they put him in the same box as her!

Full Mechanics 1/48 MAILeS KENBU: Amou Shiiba

So i will admit, i know nothing about this series. "AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline" is what it's called apparently? BUt that's a weird localized title and its japanese name is just "Warrior Machines at the Borderline" when translated literally?) But this is the protagonist. This is another kit that i don't own, but my friend asked me to paint the minis for this kit. This particular standee is actually two peices. I painted them separately, then glued them together with tamiya extra thin, and then painted over the seams as best i could. TBF the camera angles hide the seams pretty well here, but i betcha can't tell! Anyway, since i don't actually own the model, i actually got to keep this standee! I think not panel lining this makes it look a lot cleaner. Also, i'm surprised the eyes came out as well as they did. He looks like he's looking off to the side a bit.

I also painted the cockpit pilot figure! So i got some photos when i brought the boy over to my friend's. Honestly this kit has some really cool poses and details and i kinda want one myself. I love that the stock of the gun fits into an open space on the arm, sometimes it's really hard to pose a gundam wielding a gun for this reason. I wound up digging through my friend's box of mixed plamo to find all the missing pieces for it, too, just so i could disassemble it to put Amou in. yes, the disassembly was NECESSARY to put him in. Believe me i tried otherwise lol. I'm glad i put in that work though! Now my friend's model kit has a little some extra special inside it and that makes me happy. This conclude my tour of all the minis i have painted over the 3/4 of a year. Wow! It's been a lot! I'm sure i'll come across more minis in the future (hell, i still need to paint that one Mystery Pilot Figure That I Think Is Kira Yamato!). When i do, i will probably cover them in future mega galleries grouped by "however many i can fit into a post at once". But i don't plan on buying any more plamo anytime soon, so at this point i'm at the mercy of people who want to give me more minis to paint. I'm sure I could scrounge up some from my friend, but finding them and/or extracting them would absolutely be more trouble than my friend is willing to put into displaying her models (currently). if you've taken the time to read through all my posts, thank you so much! This has been one of my biggest hyperfixations recently and i'm really happy to be able to put it all into a gallery and show others. I am here, and human, and shout into the void to prove i am alive.

"So… it looks like we're being sent on a team mission."

The computer keys clacked as Heero made mental notes on its requirements and parameters. The rest of the G-Team had either focused on packing, cooking or argued with girls on the phone.

Speaking of the devil…

Relena Peacecraft, Sally Po and Lucrezia Noin appeared on the screen.

Heero set his laptop to answer video calls from a handful of people.

"Hey, Heero! We've received an update on your upcoming mission," Noin began. "I will not place you guys at Marriott Hotels."

Heero cocked an eyebrow in response. "Why?" he asked.

"Because it won't allow you to catch the main target," she said.

"Instead, you will attend the Madison Masters Academy for Girls," Sally chimed in. Before Heero could say anything, she added, "You're all required to fit in. Therefore, Relena will help order your uniforms and have them sent to each of you next week. Remember, this assignment will last for a month - perhaps longer. I encourage everyone to blend in with the rest of the students and take their chosen subjects."

"This will also serve as the best cover, so the suspect responsible for kidnapping these girls won't get off easy," said Noin.

"I will also send you a demo on the feminine ways of thinking," Relena said. "Use it wisely, preferably at 'home'."

The ladies had tried their endeavour best not to break into a fit of laughter. Heero's face was beet-red, his eyes filled with shock. How in the heck do they expect to perform well on this Mission when they must wear dresses and act like women? Oh dear…

"Why must we do things like this?" Heero asked with a hint of worry, despite his hardened features.

"Because it's important," Noin explained. "We need to find out, in the best ways possible, who is the mastermind behind the disappearances of these girls. All five of you are the best choices for this assignment. Remember what you're there for."

"Don't get too distracted by the perky stuff," Relena added. "According to Commander Une, a student is associated with the suspect in this school."

Heero crossed his arms and glared at the ladies on his screen. Good thing it didn't scare them, especially when Duo and Quatre entered the shot.

"Everything is ready," Quatre announced. "We're set to leave tomorrow afternoon."

"For real," Duo said. When he noticed the ladies, he waved at them. "So what's poppin'?"

Sally and Heero responded at the same time. "There have been changes."

"Huh?" Duo scratched his head as Quatre thoughtfully inquired, "What changes? Are we moving to a safe house?"

"Yes, but only so you'll be able to disguise yourselves," said Sally.

"So we have to make a cover…" Duo trailed off.

"Already taken care of," said Noin. "I will send additional tools straight to the address you're heading for."

"As we've already explained to Heero, you're all required to blend in with the students-"

"Cool!" Duo interrupted. "I can't wait to wear my biker's jacket and-"

"Dress up like girls at an all-girls academy," said Sally, who returned the favour when she knew how Duo's loquacious chatter would take off.

There was an uncomfortable silence.

"So…" Quatre's voice trailed off, unable to break away from his shock. His reddened cheeks spoke on his behalf.

"We will do girly stuff?" Duo asked, brokenness clear in his voice. "Please, tell me you're lying. We cannot be girls! It will tarnish our image."

"My thoughts exactly," said Heero. "This is insane!"

Both Sally and Noin straightened and regained their composure. "You have every right to know," Sally spoke. "As we've said before, there's a suspect who serves as a major threat to the student body over there."

"Can we go in there and crackdown, arrest the bastard and leave?"

The ladies shared a sigh on the other end. Duo was on a roll.

"I'm sorry, but I have zero intentions to be surrounded by countless onnas." Now Wufei joined in. "This has got to be the greatest foul on your part." He glared at Sally and Relena in the camera. "And don't talk about my hair length!"

"Too late, my long hair is a dead giveaway." Duo crossed his arms and pouted. His emphasis on 'dead giveaway' silenced the room. It added nothing more to the conversation for the next thirty minutes. This vibe had filled the room with crestfallen, fuming faces until…

"It shouldn't be that hard."

Trowa entered the room with Zechs trailing behind him. "The sooner we head down there and capture both criminals, the better. We shouldn't waste any more time complaining about girls and women. They're already dealing with a lot, especially in this current scenario. A little respect doesn't hurt, so let's man up and get going."

The rest of the group shuddered. Has Trowa lost his mind? According to Duo, he did. That was too much talking for a silent clown.

"Since when were you the type to talk?" Duo asked, albeit condescending. "That's strange. And what's worse is your keen interest in being a girl for a whole month!"

Trowa's neutral expression changed when his eyes flashed with anger. He leapt, with a triple axel and landed right in front of the rude American. He reached in his pockets for throwing knives when Quatre stood between them. Heero held Trowa's wrist in place while Wufei yanked Duo's braid and dragged him away.

"Ow! What the hell, man! All I did was make a solid point."

"Shut up Maxwell!" Wufei snapped. "Because my growing hatred for this cursed mission is clear, he made a solid point. Not you."

As their distance grew, Trowa's features softened a little when Quatre slapped him across the face. Now it was Quatre's turn to harness hardened features; his eyes expressed disappointment. Trowa's face had shock written all over it as he refocused on Quatre.

"Do you have the slightest idea what you almost did?" Quatre asked with a stern tone.

"He threw me off," said Trowa.

"Correction," Heero interrupted. "You almost had one of our team members killed. I know that look well."

Trowa growled. "Let me go."

"No."

"Not until we know for sure you won't pose a threat to us or yourself again," said Quatre. "And you did this in front of the ladies who are still online at the moment."

Shocked for a few seconds, Trowa faced Sally and Noin on the video screen. Relena has already left the room, and Quatre turned to face them.

"We apologize," he said. "We'll patch things up and debrief before our departure tomorrow."

Sally and Noin nodded. "Understood," Noin said as she stepped away from the camera on her end. After a five-minute pause, Sally spoke up.

"I know this has a lot to do with your desires to fight again, correct?" she asked.

The three boys nodded when she crossed her arms and continued.

"Well, besides this upcoming mission, I need the five of you, as a group, to come up with safe words and tactics that warrant a break and recovery period. You've been a team that came together under unexpected, yet gracious circumstances. As bitter as this sounds, the wars are to thank for that."

'She makes a solid point,' thought Zechs, who spent the last fifteen hours observing the dynamics of the G-Team in their shared apartment.

"On that note," she continued, "you all need to come up with an effective backup plan for conflict resolution and dealing with your emotions. Trowa, what you did just now sent Relena running for her life. If I were Duo's mother, I'd stop him in his tracks. Wufei, as well-intentioned, as he is, still doesn't know how to separate nonviolent from violent. And Quatre, as bad as things may get, you were just as impulsive as the others-"

"How?" the blonde asked. "I've blocked him."

Sally nodded, then with furrowed eyebrows added, "You've lost your self-control at the last minute, Quatre. Just because you were all trained to be soldiers at a young age, doesn't excuse the facts. You will always deal with annoyances and frustrations of this nature - some worse than others, in every area of your lives."

"I'm sorry," Trowa said weakly.

With a deep sigh, Sally looked down and shook her head. She crossed her arms. "I don't need an apology, Trowa. The rest of your friends do. All I'm asking is that you all come up with a solid breakout plan when you feel frustrated. This isn't the best approach so far." Looking back at the boys, solemn expressions rested on their faces. Heero no longer had a grip on Trowa's wrist and maintained a safe arm's distance between Quatre and the others. At least she had the chance to talk sense into them.

The only question is, will they follow through? She could only hope, and she didn't care what ideas they came up with as long as it will help them maintain their composures and wellness throughout.

"Thanks, Sally," Heero said.

"No problem. Don't forget what I've told you. Sally signing out!" With a salute, the video call ended.

"Next time, don't yank my hair!" shouted Duo in his room.

"Whatever," said Wufei. "One day, someone's life won't be saved."

"Shut up!"

Wufei spun on his heel to leave when Zechs appeared at the door with crossed arms.

"The ladies expect better from all of you next time," he said. "Otherwise, you guys might not get lucky for future missions."

Wufei heaved a sigh and plopped onto Duo's bed. A triumphant smirk curved Zechs' lips. No one has ever stopped him, yet. Before he could say anything more, Duo blurted.

"We're getting old so fast."

Wufei rolled his eyes from his current position.

"You're fucking 19."

"Poor choice of words, Wu-bun. And who gave you permission to lie on my bed?"

"I thought 'we're getting old so fast,'" mocked Wufei.

"You guys are not 19!" Zechs snapped. He paused, took a deep breath and continued, "You're still sixteen and unrested. The insanity is clear in this apartment, and I know you're capable of handling business like grown-ups. Does that make sense?"

"Yessssss," Duo slurred. Wufei nodded and leaned against the wall.

Zechs shook his head, crossed his arms and aimed his icy glare at Duo.

"Before you grow up fast, smarten up!"

He turned on his heel and left the room, intent on helping the others get organized. An uncomfortable silence graced the atmosphere. Man… this upcoming mission has gotten the best of them. Duo mentally willed himself to ease the tension in the room. From his current position, he shot a glance in Wufei's direction and cleared his throat.

"Wufei?"

His comrade turned to him. "Yes?"

"Sorry about earlier," he began. "I don't like cross-dressing while on duty. I mean, they made Halloween for that. Today is just, not my day."

"I understand," Wufei said. "Today is not my day, either. Sometimes I wish we've had an alternative, aside from fighting."

Duo nodded. "For real. It's like, peacetime has driven us insane. We cannot function without keeping our adrenaline pumping." He moved with fluid grace as his braid swung from side to side. As he sauntered over to the bed, Wufei sat up and stared the other youth up and down like a hawk.

Duo paused his movements and raised his hands.

"Dude, relax. I was aiming for my duffel bag."

"Oh." Wufei grabbed the black duffel and tossed it in Duo's direction. As his comrade caught the bag flawlessly, Wufei resumed his initial position against the wall. Duo scrunched his face; why was Wufei so stubborn?

"I'll go first," Duo said. "Why are you on my bed?"

Wufei rolled his eyes and turned his back on the American youth. "That doesn't matter."

Now it was Duo's turn to roll his eyes. He prodded the other youth's shoulder and made a mental note of Wufei's stiffening muscles. Duo heaved a sigh.

"If we can't get along, I don't know how we'll survive this dreadful mission," he muttered.

Just then, Quatre and Trowa appeared at his bedroom door.

"Hey guys," Quatre began, "we need to talk. It's important."

Huh?

Duo's eyes lit up while Wufei promptly rolled and sat upright on Duo's bed. The American cleared his throat and assumed a seat next to Wufei. "What's up? And shouldn't we wait for Heero, first?"

"He went out with the last set of supplies to load Zechs' car, so he'll be back shortly."

Oh, right… Tomorrow's mission.

"So we're no longer-"

Quatre silenced Duo with his hand in the air. "This matter is different. When Heero makes it back, he'll share the details."

"What details?" Wufei asked, eyebrows raised.

"It's an important matter, considering we might get future assignments that may set our emotions on fire." Quatre entered Duo's room and sat on a red cushion with Tony Stark/Iron Man pictured on it, close to the nightstand. "We need to come up with a game plan and a solution."

"Sally's idea, for the record," Trowa added.

"Well…"

"I'm sorry for what happened earlier," Trowa said, as he made eye contact with Duo. "While you and Wufei were gone, Sally had it out with us. To her, it's disappointing how we cannot get around to resolving our problems."

Duo scratched his head as he pondered on the possibility of failure, either for himself or the Team. It's true; once upon a time, their cognition was put into good use. Now, with the progression of peacetime:

Hormones are raging.

Stress is imminent.

With lesser assignments available (and appealing for the record), tensions had risen high in their shared apartment. Is chaos, uncertainty, the struggle for survival and fights for freedom the only thing that mattered? Their Gundams were already gone. Total pacifism benefited them, only but a short time. The deepest root of their frustrations stemmed from the lack of excitement, with their experience, on non-existent battlefields.

Regardless of their past values and influence, war kept them going. It's gotten harder to adjust to this mockery of wondering where they stood.

At least they have each other.

Heero appeared in the doorway, rubbed his jeans and looked at the others; his thoughts weren't here at the moment. He'd rather rethink what Sally had told them, and a flurry of ideas had flashed in his mind while he assisted Zechs in the parking lot moments ago. Due to pent-up tensions in recent weeks, Heero wasn't so sure he wanted to share. Maybe…

"Is he okay?" Trowa asked, snapping the Japanese youth out of his thoughts. Heero's surprised expression lasted for a few seconds, as he caught Wufei and Duo staring into his soul. They didn't appear uptight or annoyed, but it felt uncomfortable.

Unsettling.

"You don't have to put it all out there," Quatre suggested. "Just focus on the basics, Heero."

As he opened his mouth, the phone rang.

Damn it…

Comrades forgotten, feet shuffled and rushed into the kitchen. A shaky hand picked up the phone; his left ear met a busy signal. Heero rushed to his bedroom, opened his laptop, logged on and entered his e-mail inbox.

Nothing.

With a grunt, he got sleep due to his annoyance. With everything that's been happening between him and his teammates, the Perfect Soldier yearned for the moment the storm will calm down. God, do they have to go on this Mission tomorrow?

They'd better stay focused if they want to survive.

Two days later, all five boys were decked in women's fashion from head to toe. Some supplies Zechs had brought to the safe house on Hartford Avenue have proven useful. However, with a rented Dodge Caravan, ten encrypted security systems, Relena's makeup tutorial, their Preventer uniforms hung in a closet, and concealed weapons left behind, it set the parameters necessary.

They've spent their first day familiarizing themselves with this town, gathered clues on their main suspect, and organized their things. Quatre shared a room with Duo since his companion needed a responsive listening ear. Trowa, Wufei and Heero shared another bedroom across the hall. Three concentrated minds held each other accountable - and practiced their "feminine roles", thanks to Trowa's superb acting skills and direction.

The third bedroom had security systems hooked up. A third laptop which contained confidential information about the school's faculty and students. A live map of the areas they're targeting (where the predator prefers to show up). Two security camera screens, which mingled with the school's security systems (Heero had successfully hacked) and their safe house.

They set alarm systems near the front door, back door and garage. At Quatre's insistence, the group had installed hidden cameras and mics in the kitchen, hallway, basement and other parts of the house.

In the safe house, they were themselves; the usual warrior-like bunch. On their way to school, well…

"The thought of working with you has started a story in my mind that is still writing itself." Wufei stuck the straw in his mouth as he stared out the window, in his femme fatale attire. Trowa laughed while Heero and Duo raised their eyebrows in the front seats.

"Promise me that story doesn't feature dudes disguised as women."

Wufei shook his head. "It's the exact opposite. I've figured Noin, Sally and Relena can disguise themselves as men set up explosives and watch the target base disappear in flames."

No response, then…

"Sounds like a great plot twist!" Duo exclaimed. One look at Heero's stoic, icy expression removed his smile. "Aw, c'mon guys! Lighten up a little."

The sound of cracked knuckles sent shivers down his spine. From the corner of his eye, he noticed how Wufei twitched and leaned against the window for dear life.

"I want ice cream," said Trowa.

"We'll be late for school if we stop," said Heero. "Wait till the day is over, or until lunch break."

Trowa rolled his eyes, cracked his knuckles the second time around (with pronounced pulls) and leaned closer to Heero's seat. "Ice cream. Now."

Wufei cocked an eyebrow. "We're on a mission here, and you want to stop for ice cream?"

Heero kept his eyes on the road. "No."

In came a heavy sigh, "Fine. Have it your way."

Trowa leaned back against his seat, crossed his arms and aimed a fierce kick at Wufei, who caught his offending foot just in time.

"Calm down, Trowa! You don't want to ruin your tights too soon."

Trowa groaned and rolled his eyes. "I want my ice cream."

Wufei shot him an intense glare. "I get it. You want to get into your role properly, but this attitude won't do."

"Will you let go of my foot now?" Trowa asked.

"Only when you're calm," Wufei said with finality.

"But I am calm!" Trowa snapped.

Duo shuddered as the scene played out in his mind. "Dear God, please let us get to school soon enough. We can't keep Quatrina waiting forever!"

Just then, a hand tapped Duo's arm and gave a light squeeze. Blue-violet eyes stared at warm Prussian blues.

"We'll be fine," said Heero, who paid no attention to the troublesome pair in the back.

"I hope you're right," Duo said. "We haven't started, yet this mission is already messing with our heads."

"It doesn't have to be that way," Heero replied as he made a right onto the school's parking lot. A small smile crept on his lips. "All we have to do is concentrate on our main goal. Don't let some fashion shift rob your abilities."

Duo smiled. There's still hope.

Hope is short-lived when one cannot see far into the future.

"Isn't it funny how, no matter where you go, you keep seeing the one thing you're most afraid of?"

"Blending in, like this? Absolutely."

"I hope someone will keep this out of my obituary!"

"Okay everyone, let's not panic. Don't forget the real reason we're here. If we catch the main suspects soon enough, we don't have to keep doing this any longer."

"Note to self: Tell Commander Une not to send us on a mission like this ever again."

The rest of the G-Team, in their feminine disguises, shot glares in Wufei's direction.

"Note to self: Wufei is not invited to my birthday destination."

"Note to Heero: I don't care."

"Note to Wufei: Shove it!"

"Note to Heero: Make me."

"Note to self: Hit them."

Heero and Wufei shuffled away and disappeared into the crowd in the busy school hall. One calculated hit from Trowa hurts like hell for an entire week. At least they've dodged that bullet.

Here's to hoping they won't pick fights too soon.

Quatre regained his composure and glanced over their class schedules.

"Cool! Duo, myself and the others are in the same classes."

"Sweet!" Duo exclaimed in his girly voice. "But, what about Trowa? I don't see "Trista" listed here at all."

His smile was short-lived since Trowa is not listed in a big chunk of their subjects. The tall youth placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Don't worry about it. I'll be fine. We can always meet up for lunch hour."

Quatre's eyes gleamed again. "Yeah, you're right. Then we can discuss our progress further."

"Good. I'll see you guys, later. And make sure the other two are on their best behaviour."

"You can count on it!" asserted Duo.

"Please, introduce yourselves," said a dainty, short blonde. She wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, red-coloured lipstick, and a coastal blue summer dress with a floral design. This teacher wore a friendly, warm smile as she leaned against her spruce, polished desk.

"I'm Duet," said Duo in his falsetto.

"Kim," said Wufei, in like fashion.

"Quatrina," said Quatre. He'd secretly hoped their disguises won't flop.

"Havannah" said Heero. His voice only went up two octaves.

"Pleased to meet you all," their teacher replied. "Take any seat you want."

Quatrina sat at a free table, close to Havannah while Duet and Kim joined others at a different table. Once they were settled, their teacher proceeded with the lesson in progress. Social Studies had focused on various ideologies and perspectives, regarding peacetime since the wars ended…

What a coincidence! Havannah smirked, knowing full and well that Relena would love to hear her take on it. It wouldn't surprise her if her companion had any connections with the faculty members. If that were the case, then the mission would be tricky with these disguises the G-Team ought to maintain.

By all means necessary.

Quatrina's chin rested on the back of her hand, as she took time to grasp some informative responses shared by the class. Kim maintained a seemingly rude demeanour as she took notes. Peacetime hadn't been the friendliest to her lately. Duet had tried her darnedest not to contribute, yet discussions were a must for her exuberant soul. Here's to hoping she doesn't fall off-track with her voice projection. Rehearsing for two days with a long, braided ponytail and a deceptively slim figure tickled her fancy.

So how's Trista keeping up?

Her green nail polish, misty eyeshadow and royal blue lipstick were on point. Her sleek and smooth uni bang covered half of her face, which increased her mysterious flavour. Her Biology classmates couldn't resist since they glued their eyes on her, not the lesson.

She also sported a biker jacket, fingerless gloves and leather tights beneath a gothic style skirt.

Romancing the Beat - Analysis

You would think after more than a dozen publications, I'd know what the hell I was doing. Yeah, not so much. I can't plot my way out of a paper bag, and while that's fine for short fiction, it gets to be a problem when I try to write long. So I'm doing a deep dive into structure, and I'll be writing up some of my thoughts here (and on Tumblr, because who knows which format will survive), because I think more clearly when I'm writing. Also, just for ease, I'll probably be analyzing my own fanfics on occasion, so expect occasional Gundam Wing chatter.

"Romancing the Beat"  by Gwen Hayes is a wonderfully simple book on craft. It's not interested in prose, or character building (other than one essential note), or POV. It's about the beats you need to write a category romance, full stop. Now, I don't write or read category romances, but I admire how effective they are, and I do write (or want to write) romantic subplots. This book is equally useful from that perspective. I think, with a little tweaking, it could even be used for non-romantic relationships.

According to "Romancing the Beat," a romance plot has four parts, each broken up into five beats. Which is fine for a novel, but I think needs to be pruned for shorter works.

Note: Beat /= scene. Multiple beats can happen in one scene, or one beat can be explored over multiple scenes.

Set Up  -Hayes notes this as the first 20% to 25% of the book, but I think I'd make it less.

P1 Intro  

Introduces first protagonist, their current situation, and their goals. Most importantly, it must at least hint at what Hayes calls the characters 'wound,' that is, the thing that makes them retreat from love. For the romance to work, a wound is fairly essential, otherwise you just have two characters happily falling in love, no complications. I have some thoughts on this, and on how to apply it more generally outside of romance, but that's for another post.

P2 Intro

Ditto

Meet Cute

The important thing here is that it's both a push and a pull. There needs to be at least a hint of attraction, whatever that means for the character, but there needs to be some reason for not acting on it/believing it won't work. (Also, 'meet' doesn't have to be literal, the characters may be old friends. But this would be where the first inkling of something more might hit.)

No Way 1

This is where the character (or characters) articulate exactly why the romance won't work, going back to the 'wound' stated earlier. Mind, this doesn't necessarily means sex is out of the question, depending on the story. For example: in Salt this is Wufei reminding himself that he makes Duo's self-destructive impulses worse, and that being around him is bad for both of them.

Adhesion Plot Thrust

Something has to keep the characters together despite the pushback of the last beat. A lot of common fanfic tropes fall here. This is the storm trapping our heroes in a cabin, or the mission they're going on together, the fake relationship they're acting out.

Falling in Love

No way 2

This beat reaffirms the rejection from the previous section. Or, it may be the second characters reason for denying that romance is possible.

Inkling this could work

The goal here is to start undermining the false beliefs/wounds keeping the characters apart. Hint that they may be wrong. In Salt, I'd say this would be Duo holding on to Wufei while he sleeps. It's the first that Wufei starts to question whether he's right in his assumptions of what Duo wants.

Deepening desire

This is where we start to see emotional intimacy as well as the blushing, longing looks sort of attraction (if it's that sort of story). But seriously, I think it's the 'emotional intimacy' bit that's important. This bit should continue to undermine the whole 'wounds' bit. In Salt, I guess this would be Duo and Wufei in the morning, staring out the window.

Maybe this could work

I I feel like these beats are starting to get redundant. But this is where the characters start to really believe that love is possible. In a lot of novels, this is where the sex happens. If sex has already happened, it's where the deep, intimate sex happens. If there is no sex, some other exchange of intimacy.

Midpoint of Love Plothrust

This is a moment where we sort of see the future, that is, the two characters acting out love even if they're not quite there yet. This should be as high a high as possible, because it's about to be torn apart. Why? Because the characters haven't actually addressed their wounds/changed. (I think, for a lot of fics, I stop here.)

Retreating from Love

Inkling of doubt

This reinforces the characters wounds/false belief of why they don't deserve love. It's just a hint though, the first hesitance after the previous high. Love and intimacy can still happen here, but there's a worm in the apple.

Deepening doubt

Same as before, but more powerful. Character is now actively trying to pretend that everything is ok.

Retreat

Here we go from denial to outright stating the fear/worries that are emerging. This doesn't have to be stated in the literal sense, it can simply be thought. But it should be overt and clear.

Shields up

At this point, the protagonist is convinced they've been proven right about why this won't work. Something happens that at least appears to back up the ideas they have about love. Important, for me at least, this can't just be a dumb misunderstanding. Ideally, each character is acting out their wound in a way that sets off the others.

Break Up

And so it ends, at least temporarily. Hayes notes that this has to be a choice. A character thinking the other is dead is not a breakup. A breakup has to be an active walking away. This is where a character is choosing their own fears and damage over the opportunity of love.

Fighting for Love

Dark night of the Soul

Everything is sadness forever. This is where the loneliness hits.

Wake-up/Catharsis

So, here's where they realize they've been stupid. Often a second character steps in to tell them how stupid. This is where they face their wound and say wait, right, I'm an idiot. In Salt, this is Relena and Wufei's breakfast date. (I'm surprised that I hit any beats, honestly. And Salt lacked some rather crucial ones. But hey, I'm learning.)

Grand Gesture

And now we get to the beats I never include because I don't know how to write a damned ending to save my life. In this beat, a character overcomes their wound and does something to prove they've done just that. For this beat to be effective, the character has to risk something and overcome something. They can't just write a nice note, unless they have an overwhelming fear of writing nice notes. This is the cheer them on moment. It should feel epic.

What whole hearted looks like

This is the happily ever after bit. I'm of the opinion it should be fairly brief, if the romance is the mainplot. As a subplot, it can linger a lot longer.

Epilogue

This is also the happily ever after bit, but further down the road. I think maybe Hayes wanted to keep her five beat structure but ran out of beats. Personally, I'm not a fan of epilogues, unless they're doing something really interesting.

Gundam Wing 30 days challenge [day 16-30]

Day 16 - Who is your favorite female character? Why?

hmmmm honestly, given how spoiled I got with fanfiction and the right fandom groups, I can’t decide on a favorite female character. I’m stuck between Relena, Lady Une, Noin, Catherine and Sally. All these women are really strong characters, especially the first two, who change, grown, matured a lot during the series, even if they didn’t get not a lot of scenes to show why they changed. 

Day 17 - Is Treize Khushrenada really dead? Why?

Yes. To me, I don’t think he’s the type to fake his own death in the middle of a grand mobile suit space fight. He seems to have high opinions of soldiers standing in the very front of any war and has this romantic idea of soldier dying in battlefields no matter how tragic that sounds. It’s actually fitting that he’d rather perish during a fight in the battlefield than wastes his life away like the aristocracy. 

Day 18 – Who are your Gundam Wing One True Pairing (OTP)? Do you multiship? Or, do you just consider them all just friends?

recently, the current active gundam wing fans in the tumblr tags are testing me >_> trying to lure me into 2x5 or 1x2x5.  I’m actually impressed with how much love Wufei is getting in these days. 

Day 19 – Which is your favorite GW anime series opening or closing theme?

I LOVE THEM ALL!

Just Communication is so iconic~~~ and it sits at the top along with WHITE REFLECTION.

As for ending theme, I like “It’s just love”. 

Day 20- Do you collect Gundam Wing gunpla models? If so, which models have you built? If you haven’t built one, which would you consider building?

No. Sorry. I was envious though when I saw a family member collecting Gundam Wing gunpla. If anyone is willing to buy me a gunpla, I wouldn’t mind trying to build one hehehe. 

Day 21 - Which character do you think is the worst mobile suit pilot? (Gundam or non-Gundam)

I don’t know. It depends on the situation I guess. New recruits will most likely not be able to pilot the mobile suit well and will likely be stamped as worse mobile suit pilots until Noin whips them into shape. So technically, I have no idea. 

Day 22 - Are there ‘bad guys’ in Gundam Wing? If so, then who would you bestow the title of ‘villain’ to?

There are bad guys in GW. It just depends on which faction you’re supporting. If I have to choose someone to bestow the villain title then I’ll choose Dekim.  

Day 23 - If you were in the Gundam Wing universe, which organization would you likely support? Why?

If I had the courage and the determination, I’d join Sally, the revolutionary guerrilla. I’m too small fry to even consider joining huge forces like Alliance or Oz or even the Gundam faction. 

Day 24 - Which character do you think has the most character growth overall? Why?

Lady Une. She started as a strict commanding officer, mobilizing troops the Colonies, triggered Relena’s hate, following Treize’s orders to a T, and somehow turning out to be really hateful military officer overall until... the second half of the series where she split in personality and later on took over the helm after Treize’s death and singlehandedly pushed forth the idea to create Preventers with the purpose of keeping peace between Earth and the Colonies and their organizations within. Really impressive lady boss there!

Day 25 - If you were in the Gundam Wing universe, which character would you most likely befriend and make your BFF? Why?

I’m too influenced by the fandom, especially having gone back into it several times, several years-- so seriously? I think it’d probably be Duo. I enjoy bright and funny conversationalists. He seems like someone who I have no problem holding long hours of conversations or small talk with, and basically just grow close to do stuff together like actual BFFs. 

 Day 26 - Do you consider the Mad 5 Gundam Scientists as negative or positive driving forces for their assigned Gundam pilots?

I think they’re the neutral party overall but in the case of Gundam pilots, they are probably the positive driving forces. The scientists were the ones who began building the Gundams, supposedly indestructible mobile suits in the universe, trying to fight for the colonies rights and all individually chosen, motivated and trained kids to pilot their machines for an upcoming rebellion war (well, kinda--Trowa’s was a different case... same goes for Wufei and Duo...). 

Day 27 - Is Quatre a Newtype? Explain.

I have never considered this (I never even analyzed any of the characters tbh) until the tumblr crew meta’d it and found myself comparing him to Kira from Gundam Seed because that’s where I encountered the term NewType. It seems about right--Quatre developing enhanced abilities to resonate with people and the universe and “feel” their inner thoughts/intentions. 

Day 28 – Are there other Gundam series technologies or concepts you wish Gundam Wing had adopted? (Examples: types of mobile suit, Haros, GN drives, Minovsky particles) Why?

I don’t know any difference. lol. I treat them as separate universes with their own things. But I guess I’d say maybe I wished GW could be like the gunpla-collecting series Gundam Build Divers or Try. Where everyone can fight with their gunpla, challenge each other in PVP and NOT die in war. But that’s mean.

Day 29 - Would you like to see the series redone? If so, which stories would you like to see animated? Which would you like to see left out?

NYC Preventers Branch New York, New York 206 September 19

Heero’s fingers flew across the keys, so close to the end of the report he could almost taste the finish.  But the phone at the corner of his—well, Wufei’s—desk had started to ring.  Frantically he raced to the end of his thought, daring the caller to stay on the line a little bit longer. ��His mystery caller humored him just long enough, and he answered seconds before the machine kicked over to voicemail.  “Yuy.”

“Yehr workin’ late,” drawled the voice on the other end and Heero felt his stomach flip.

“Duo,” he muttered.  “Why are you calling on the work line?”

“Your cell’s dead and your desktop’s been inactive for hours,” came the quick reply, the L2 accent evaporating.  “Figured I’d try the office before ordering a search party.”

Heero groaned, glancing at his bag where it hung by the door.  Second time this week.  “I need to get another charger for here at the office,” he said, more to himself than Duo.  Then he looked at the clock on his monitor and frowned.  “What time is it there in Brussels?”

“Eh, well...we’re currently in Moscow, but the answer is ‘late’ regardless.”

There was a...thickness to Duo’s voice that made Heero’s frown deepen.  “You sound sick.”

There was a half-hearted, rasping laugh in reply.  “There’s some bug going around the team,” Duo said.  “Nothin’ the ‘bots [1] can’t handle.  It’ll pass.”  There was a pause, and then he asked, “How are you?”

Heero closed his eyes and sighed.  The rest of the office had long since gone home while he had stayed late to finish the damn report, knowing full well the same thing would happen tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that…  “Tired,” he answered Duo.  “I don’t know how Wufei does this job.  Everything is his problem, all the time, every day.”

“Sounds like our Chief of Staff,” Duo said.  “Up for twenty, down for four, and then she does it all over again.  Know her secret?  Caffeine and sheer adrenaline.  She keeps the rest of us marching to the same beat, too.  Which means I’ve gotten really fuckin’ good at high-velocity power naps.  You’d be so proud of some of the places I’ve sacked out.” [2]

A dry laugh slipped between Heero’s lips and he shook his head, leaning back in his chair.  “Must you make a habit of that though?”

“Must you make a habit of imitating Wufei’s work ethic?” Duo shot back, imitating him, though humor took the sting out of the words.  “He is coming back, ya know.  Don’t put him out of a job.”

“I told him I’d try not to do that,” Heero admitted.

“‘Fraid yehr doin’ a piss-poor job o’that.”

His accent’s stronger when he’s unwell.  He doesn’t pay as close attention to it.  Heero debated whether to share his observation but decided against it.  Instead, he said, “You really do need your rest.  Can you run shifts instead?”  Duo outright laughed at him.  The sound made Heero smile, but then it devolved into a coughing jag.  “Duo…” he intoned.

“I’m fine,” the other man said, but it sounded forced to Heero.  He suspected Duo thought it did too because when he spoke next, he had changed the subject.  “So when am I gonna see you again?”

Heero sighed as he thought about it.  “When are you free?”

“Don’t know,” Duo admitted.  “Depends on how the ESUN calendar shakes out.  You?”

“Don’t know,” Heero parroted.  “Depends on when Wufei gets back, probably.”  A moment of silence passed between them, each considering their options.  At last, Heero offered, “December?”

“Maybe.”

Heero bristled.  “Maybe?”

“If I ask nicely.”

“So ask nicely,” he told him.  “We’ll plan for Christmas and if something works out before then, it works out.”  Heero didn’t like how defeated he sounded.  December was still felt so far away.  There was a long pause on the other end, and he worried he had said something wrong or—worse yet—the call had dropped.  “Duo?”

“I miss you, you know,” the other man said.

The emotion in those few words a heady thing.  How Duo managed to make them delicate and dangerous at the same time, Heero would never know.  It made his chest clench and his ears ring.  “I miss you too,” Heero told him.  

“I wasn’t just calling to do a headcount,” Duo said and Heero could hear the shift happening in real time as defenses moved back into place.  “Although I could do that, too.  Quat’s in Damascus.  Trowa’s up in L3 for another few days.  Wufei’s somewhere in the boondocks of the Federation.  And you’re at work,” the last was delivered with over-exaggerated frustration.

Heero recognized the evasion but allowed himself to be pulled along.  “You’re at work too,” he countered.

“No, I’m in Moscow.  We’ve established that.  Clearly the fatigue is gettin’ to yehr head, man.”

Heero shook his head.  “I only have fifteen more minutes, after I’m done talking to you.”

“Promise?”

“I promise,” Heero assured, allowing himself to sound ever so slightly exasperated, adding, “so long as you agree to see someone about the cough.”

When Duo replied, he sounded earnest.  “We have a doc on call with the traveling team.  If it doesn’t go away in a couple days, I’ll talk to him.  Satisfied?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Duo?”

“Huh?”

I love you.  Heero worried his lower lip between his teeth, biting back the words.  No...no, he shouldn’t say that.  Not yet.  Not now.  “Please get some sleep.  And next time you want to talk, I’ll...make sure I’m home so you can use the video, okay?”

“Sounds like a plan,” Duo asserted and Heero could almost see that grin, one of the honest ones that held just the barest shadows of relief.  “Good night, Heero.”

It took effort to connect telepathically to any of his creatures, though his bond with Iria was strong enough that it took less of his energy than with the others. Even so, he was spending an unprecedented amount of time connected with her, and it was taking a toll.

But the waiting was even worse than the exhaustion. Every day Duo spent on land was another day his secret might be discovered. Quatre was sick with worry, especially because there was only so much he could glean by watching Duo through Iria’s eyes. She couldn’t follow him inside, and even when he was outside, she couldn’t get too close too often lest she arouse suspicion.

Morgan lost any family he had left during the horrors of the Canadian Civil War, he lived on his own and carved out his own existence at eighteen years old. Adventure and magic only existed in fairy tales and daydreams, survival is all he knows anymore. The Civil War ends a little before the Eve Wars. So when the new laws after the Eve Wars come into place, his world was turned upside down and Canada's new government left little choice to the die-hard patriots. Finally escaping to the Sanq Kingdom wasn't the sanctuary he had hoped it would be. Add the former Gundam Pilots to the mix and he might just find his escape, or will he never find the freedom he craves?
