Artifact Management and Enhancement Screen Optimizations Are Here~ | Developers Discussion - 12/06

Hello, Travelers~

In Version 4.3, we will implement a series of system optimizations in the game. We will be introducing some of these in this Developers Discussion. Let's take a look together~

〓Archon Quest "Requiem of the Echoing Depths" Unlinked From World Quest〓

To ensure that Travelers have a smoother experience with the Archon Quest, from Version 4.3 onwards, "The Chasm Delvers" quest series will no longer be prerequisites for this Archon Quest. When you reach the objective "Enter The Chasm: Underground Mines" in the Archon Quest "In the Depths, an Unexpected Reunion," a Teleport Waypoint will be automatically unlocked in The Chasm: Underground Mines so you can continue with the Archon Quest.

The Archon Quest "Requiem of the Echoing Depths" requires Travelers to head to The Chasm: Underground Mines, but this location will be locked until Travelers have completed the corresponding World Quest that allows them to enter and continue pursuing the Archon Quest.

〓One-Click Features〓

▌Dispatching Characters on Expeditions

One-Click Expeditions will become available in Version 4.3. This will allow Travelers to claim Expedition Rewards with a single click, as well as repeat expeditions with a single click.

(This is under development and is not indicative of the final product.)

▌Ingredient Processing and Forging Screens

Aside from expeditions, you will also be able to claim processed ingredients and forged items that have been completed with a single click in Version 4.3.

▌Mystic Offering

When performing Mystic Offerings at Crafting Benches, you'll now be able to add multiple Artifacts in batches with a single click.

In future versions, you'll also be able to claim created Furnishings from the Creation Screen in the Serenitea Pot with a single click.

〓Optimized Artifact Management〓

As the journey goes on, the number of Artifact Sets you can collect will continue to increase. To help Travelers quickly find and manage Artifacts, a significant optimization has been made to the Artifacts filter function.

Automatic Locking and Quick Unlock functions have been added to the Inventory > Artifacts screen. Travelers can use these to automatically lock and unlock Artifacts according to the requirements they set.

Additionally, as a reference to help Travelers when choosing Artifacts, recommended Artifact set information based on recently active players will now be shown on characters' Artifacts screens.

For more details about Artifact management optimizations, please stay tuned for future official descriptions.

〓Optimized Enhancement Screens〓

In the current version of the game, when Travelers level up characters or enhance Weapons and Artifacts, a pop-up appears showing how the corresponding values changed before and after enhancement. In Version 4.3, enhancement information will be integrated into the original screen instead. This will make the enhancement experience smoother for Travelers by getting rid of the frequent pop-ups.

Apart from integrating enhancement information, there will also be some small targeted optimizations on these screens:

▌Character Level-Up Screen

(This is under development and is not indicative of the final product.)

The speed of interface special effects related to leveling up characters has been increased, and you can now use Auto Add to add sufficient Character EXP Materials to get the character up to the highest level they can reach before Ascension with a single click.

▌Artifact Enhancement Screen

(This is under development and is not indicative of the final product.)

Other optimizations:

1. You can now consume up to 15 items per time when enhancing Artifacts.

2. Added the "Enhance to Next Tier" function. Once activated, when there are still open slots to add Enhancement Materials but this action will already cause the Artifact to reach Level 4/8/12/16, no more additional Enhancement Materials will be automatically added.

3. In Settings > Other, you can choose whether or not 5-Star Artifacts can be auto-added as Enhancement Materials.

Combined with the Automatic Locking function mentioned above, we hope that these changes will make managing 5-star Artifacts more convenient for Travelers.

▌Weapon Enhancement Screen

(This is under development and is not indicative of the final product.)

You can now consume up to 40 items per time when enhancing Weapons on, and select multiple materials when refining Weapons.

We hope that these optimizations make the enhancement experience smoother for Travelers.

〓Character Reload Spot When Challenging Domains Repeatedly〓

In Version 4.3, after entering the Domain or if you continue to challenge the Domain after claiming rewards, characters will reload nearer to the Domain challenge location. This means you won't have to run over from the Domain entrance to this location again.

〓Other Optimizations〓

To improve your gaming experience, some other optimizations will be implemented in Version 4.3. These include:

1. The way enemy avatars display in Adventurer Handbook: Enemies will be adjusted to help you find them. Also, you can now select "Cancel Navigation" on this screen to stop navigating towards the corresponding enemy on the map.

2. On the various creation screens (Crafting/Cooking/Forging/Create Furnishing), if there are no selected character records on the Traveler's device, the first character that can provide a bonus when creating the selected item will be chosen by default.

3. On the map screen, you'll now be able to check bosses' current remaining respawn times by clicking their avatars.

Summary: Since you both were completely different species, you wanted to show your yautja boyfriend one of Earth's finest creations. Just Dance.

"Come on," you muttered, fiddling with your old Wii console that was once sitting in your closet collecting dust. Now, it was getting set up to your living room television. "Stupid thing."

For a while, since the beginning of your relationship with your alien lover, you have tasked yourself with showing him things from your world. It started off with the basics, including food, fashion trends, music, and much more. Now, you wanted to show him a small piece of your childhood.

Your yautja watched silently as you fiddled with the old Wii station. He didn't understand your urge to show him these strange things from your planet. However, he thought you were very cute when your Ooman eyes would light up and your smile would brighten when you showed him things. Therefore, he indulged your little antics.

"And what is this contraption, little blade?" He asked in his language with various clicks, which made you pause.

The crackle of the translator embedded under the skin behind your ear took a second to translate, his clicks turning into words in a mere second.

You smiled and turned towards him, "I wanted to show you a game that's very popular on my planet!" You continued to fiddle with it for a few more seconds before the screen finally lit up. "Sweet!"

Before he could continue asking more questions, you quickly headed towards him, holding something similar to a remote in your hand.

"This is a Wii remote," you handed the pink device into his awaiting claws, his hand practically dwarfing the remote as he stared down at it. "You use it so the console can monitor your movements!"

He let out a few curious clicks as he played with the remote in his hand, similarly how you would wield a knife which almost made you giggle. The device was shaped like a thick stick that was decorated pink. He also noticed that it was covered in some rubber sheath with a dangling string.

"How do I wield this?" He asked, patiently allowing you a moment for the translator to help you understand. He stared down at you, silently admiring how small you were compared to him, especially in the nest.

Oblivious, you started explaining the device. "Okay, well, you'll hold this and follow the movements on the screen, basically copy them. The remote will monitor and track on how well you're doing!" You took the remote and pulled out the string as he listened.

"This goes around your wrist and can be adjusted! This makes sure you don't accidentally throw it or drop it." You finished, carefully strapping the fabric around his wrist.

As you were doing that, your yautja continued to admire you. Using his other hand, he played with your hair, careful not to accidentally hurt you with his claws. He loved how smart you were, teaching him something new practically every day. He let out some affectionate purrs the more he thought about it.

He was proud to have such a worthy mate.

Your cheeks flushed a little, smiling up at him which he returned in his own way. His upper mandibles moving to resemble something similar to a smile. "All done, big boy." You teased, pulling away to grab your own remote.

Going through the menu, you selected the game that you inserted a bit ago. After a few more clicks, the song list appeared and you were already searching through some of the songs available.

"Anything that you wanna try?" You asked, looking up at him.

Your yautja shuffled through the songs before one captured his attention. Surprisingly, the beat was very catchy and the characters on the screen was interesting.

"Let's do this one." He said, returning your gaze for your approval.

"Okay! I'm excited for this one, so I'm glad you picked it!" You exclaimed, clicking on the song and getting into position. After a second, you had to pull miserably on your yautja to do the same.

Curse him for being so big, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

Halfway through the song, you noticed that your yautja was getting a little frustrated. For the past few minutes, he's been getting a low score.

And your yautja is very competitive.

"Pauk!" He cursed, continuing to get 'ok' on his score and he was starting to get more frustrated.

"You're going great!" You tried encouraging, allowing yourself to get a few low scores purposely without him seeing. "I'm getting a few low scores too!"

However, he didn't hear you, continuing to get more frustrated and moving his arms rougher.

After a moment, something snapped and he swung his arm. In that second, he forgot how powerful he was and his superior strength. The remote flew from his hand, the wrist strap snapping as the device slammed into the screen of the television.

Leaving a large crack.

"Cjit..." He muttered, staring at the television with wide eyes and mandibles spread.

You stood there, facial expression matching his own, your own remote still in your own grasp.

"Pauk, I'm so sorry, little blade." He said, turning towards you with guilt for ruining something that could have been very expensive.

However, you could only laugh as you hunched over, hands on your knees which surprised your mate.

"I-I'm not mad, my love." You reassured, wiping a lonely tear from your face as you straightened yourself. "It was honestly funny."

"But, I broke your television, I shouldn't have lost control like that." He revoked, standing there with his arms crossed and head bowed.

You simply smiled, standing on your toes and patting his head, which made him look towards you.

"I could care less about it. I care more about you and your enjoyment." You stated, leaning in and kissing his lower mandible. He sighed and returned the affection, allowing a few of his mandibles to tickle your cheeks.

"What would I do without you, little mate?" He purred, looking down at you in adoration. He wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you closer.

"Cease to exist." You teased, biting your lip. You smirked and slowly brushed your fingers through his dreadlocks, tugging on a few. You were rewarded with a low growl.

"Why don't we do something else to let off some steam?"

God GOD okay okay okay okay okay I'm having thoughts I'm having FEELINGS im having a Moment SO

I waanna talk about Ten and Donna (shocker I know) but SPECIFCALLY I wanna talk about like. Them and being besties and soulmatism and red string of fates and what not. Also this post is long as rambly as hell so I'm putting it under a readmore for my non-tendonna girlies <3

So like. The Runaway Bride really does establish them as future besties so so well and some of it is the writing but I do think that some of it is that Catherine Tate and David Tennant, by all available accounts, ALSO immediately got on like a house on fire. Like genuinely i know Acting TM is a thing but I think them getting on is part of why their on screen chemistry is SO electric and dazzling to the point where Donna went from a one off one episode character to *checks notes* a character that came back TWICE and also fundamentally changed the structure and DNA of Doctor Who as a whole so. You know. Pretty impressive. Plus Donna gets to have her first adventure with The Doctor as their absolute worst: Ten is grieving from a FRESH wound of losing Rose, he's incredibly cruel and incredibly cold and straight up murders the Racknoss without a flinch or hint of remorse, and even before that he accidentally kidnaps her and then insults her as someone to dismiss. That's not to say that she doesn't also see The Doctor at their brightest: he ends up treating her with incredible kindness, and he's dazzling and brilliant and cares so much and shows her the creation of the earth itself to provide comfort. However it IS to say that because of the nature of his first interaction with Donna he CAN'T put up a facade she already knows the truth!! She is walking into their dynamic with completely open eyes and at first it fucking scares her! She doesn't dislike him in fact they already are friends after less than a day but

Then partners in crime happens. And she's realized okay no actually I CAN take the bad with the good and I WANT to participate in all of it and I DO want this friendship. The Red Strings of Fate (or maybe the TARDIS being like lmaoo you need this girlie <3) bring them back together and they are Officially Tethered from that point on which is so so so delicious. It's also so so so delicious that Ten's still at an incredibly low point and she's still going into this friendship without any ruses in place. Like oh shit yeah they are Bound together even if they did separate now they would almost certainly find each other again.

AND THEN AND THEN!!! We've already established The Doctor and Donna as fast best friends but holllllyyyy shit I think Fires of Pompeii is what establishes them as forever Soulmates. I meant canonically the ending of Fires of Pompeii where she has him save the family fundamentally changed The Doctor for the rest of their lives and gave them a guiding moral compass long after she wasn't there so yeah that's pretty fuckin soulmates of them. But I actually think them as a concept of two people sharing one soul (for the better!!) happens earlier in the episode. The exact moment in fact is THIS ONE:

The Doctor has to make a choice. There are no good options: both are mass destruction and death. And it's SUCH a Doctor choice to have to make: actively destroy Pompeii and everyone in it, or allow the entire world to be destroyed. Not only that but it will likely kill both him and Donna as well. It's a mix of self sacrifice and other sacrifice to save the world and it's a horrific situation to be in.

It is a narrative that parallels the choice he made in the Time War. It is an archetypical Burden of the Doctor.

And then she looks into his eyes, sees his fear and hesitation and remorse and guilt, and wordlessly puts her hands on his. They push the lever to destroy Pompeii together. And it becomes the burden of the DoctorDonna.

Since Fields of MIstria has landed and been, at least as far as I can tell, such a success (I mean I love it and you guys seem to as well so I consider that a success) I figure I'd highlight bits of the roadmap they posted on steam.

There are no specific dates but under the current roadmap we can expect the following in the fourth quarter of 2024.

NPC heart limits are planned to be raised from 4 to 6 (8 or 10 seems to be the max but that update likely wont be til later). With romanceable characters getting a 6 heart event. There will also be additional dialogue for NPCs which I'm assuming includes the non-romanceable villagers.

More monsters and drops will be added to the dungeon. Seems like getting more levels will likely be something we'll have to wait on.

The towns renown cap is going to be raised 20 levels with more requests and rewards. The museum will also be getting more content and more rewards as well. Theres also a new festival to expect tho what kind of festival it is isn't mentioned.

There will be more skill perks in future with the total level you can reach being raised to 45.

The player home will get another upgrade and, naturally, there'll be more clothes, cosmetics, furniture items and more.

Beyond that the devs seem to plan to include the following down the line;

Fully integrating romance with more heart events,marriage and kids

Additions to the mines questline and more spells.

The roadmap mentions additional biomes. I dont know if thats referencing the mine/dungeons levels or the Deep Forest which isnt reachable at this time.

It looks like they want to add pets and the ability to ride some of the larger animals (the horses are likely tho it'd be cool to ride the cows, alpacas, and others). Not sure what kind of pet options there will be, but given the part of the character creation screen that says "pets unavailable" it's likely we'll be able to pick out a pet at the start. Not sure if we'd have those pets from the start or if its something we'd unlock, but we'll have to see.

No idea when we're getting the two mystery romance characters (one of whom is Calderas, but wondering what his non-dragon form looks like.)

Thats a rough summary of what I think we can expect from the game in future. Remember to help Fields of Mistria get a boost by reviewing the game on steam and, if you encounter any issues, be sure to send the developers a report!

This is one of the funnest farm sim games thats come along in awhile and I really want it to be a success!

I know my way around the starbound workshop better than most so I figured I'd share the love and talk about the mods I have installed, the category for this particular post being quality of life, as that's probably the most universally liked one. Quality of life means anything that adds ease of access to certain features, new mechanics, or simply more variety

Are these mod recs? Not necessarily. Read carefully, make an informed decisions, and back up your save file beforehand if you do want to try some of them out. Happy modding!

"Extended block crafting" by HaxoFelyne Summary: Adds crafting recipes for 32 uncraftable blocks because fuck uncraftable blocks Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: Brains are the only really broken block in the game and this mod doesn not add them, so balanced Lore compliance: N/A

"Why is this not printable?!" by Cthonyxa Summary: Makes more items printable Usefulness: 8/10 Cheating?: Things like art and major artifact clues remain unprintable which makes sense Lore compliance: yes

The sluggish computer on my desk had never frustrated me as much as it did today. Long minutes passed before I could open the browser, and even longer before Hector fixed the internet connection issue I had reported. Standing over him, impatiently digging my nails into my arms, I listened to Veronica recount yet another nightmare she’d had that night. This time, it was less intense, but still terrifying enough to make her wake up drenched in cold sweat. Not paying any real attention to what she was saying, I repeated the advice I had given her yesterday, to which she merely waved her hand dismissively and muttered that no amount of rationalization had helped her wake from the dream.

"Maybe this job is just too stressful for me?" Veronica pondered aloud, staring at the tiny cracks in the ceiling.

"This job?" I muttered incredulously, unable to hold back my thoughts. Hearing my derisive tone, Veronica froze for a moment, then burst into short laughter.

"You may be right, I can't think of a single thing here that could stress me out. So maybe it's because of Luke? Maybe my body is sending me signals that he's not the right man?"

"I don't think it's Luke's fault. Thanks, Hector," I said, nodding to our IT specialist as he left, and immediately pounced on the keyboard. Veronica's resigned expression stopped me from diving into the tasks I had planned to search for. With a soft sigh, I caught her eye with my gaze. "Have you ever tried meditating? Or any relaxation techniques? Try disconnecting from the internet before bed, listen to some soothing music, take a long, warm bath, have a glass of good wine."

"Good wine is actually quite a solid piece of advice," she said, smiling at me. "I could also finally listen to those philharmonic concert CDs that Luke keeps bringing to my place."

"And maybe then you'll stop wondering if the man who brings you pleasant music is the right one or not," I winked at her but quickly hid behind my screen to avoid further discussion.

Throughout the night, I replayed my encounter with the dark-haired man in my mind. In my imagination, I could still see his face, his sharp features, and his gaze, which seemed vast enough to contain the whole universe. I felt the energy emanating from his body as he stood mere centimeters from me. I remembered the threat in his words about danger and irreparable harm. There was a depth and emptiness in him simultaneously, and I couldn't understand why he had instilled fear in me from the very first moment I saw him before the accident several years ago.

The Dream Lord. This phrase was the first thing I typed into the search engine, only to be immediately flooded with countless descriptions of that one character* from a popular TV series. I had to skip several tabs before something new caught my eye. The article was titled: "From Piaskun to Sandman – Figures of Dream across the Ages."

The term "Dreamlord" appeared several times, along with others like "Dream," "Oneiros," "Morpheus," and "Sandman." The latter yielded significantly more results. As I read, I learned that the Sandman was a character inspired by European mythology, a being who put children to sleep by sprinkling sand in their eyes. However, this name was also associated with rulers, gods, and guardians of sleep from various mythologies around the world. The Dream Lord I encountered must have been a creature existing for millennia, perhaps since the very creation of the universe.

And now, this creature wanted me dead.

Having perused most of the available online sources, I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes for a few moments. Dreamlord had found me in Fiddler’s Green, where I usually rested between nightmares. He sought me out because I was traveling through other people's nightmares, rescuing them from their terrors, although it seemed no one from my world should be doing this. If he had forbidden me, I would likely have agreed to stop… despite the fact that, for the past few years, it had been my sole, genuine purpose. Yet, in my desire to help, I had no idea I could cause anyone harm. That I could inflict "irreparable damage"…

But it wasn’t only my wanderings through nightmares that made the King of Dreams want to destroy me. It was the power that enabled these journeys — a power that had manifested the first time I saw him in that park.

Suddenly, a surprised gasp from Sophie, the head of the marketing department, broke my reverie. She stood in the doorway to my left, staring at something behind me.

“Oh my, girls, look at that enormous bird!”

Frowning, I turned toward the window to see a large, black raven clawing at the outer windowsill.

"Disgusting," Veronica muttered, grimacing at the sight. "I wonder how long it's been sitting there. It doesn't seem afraid of us at all."

"I'm a bit afraid of it, to be honest. Kind of reminds me of Hitchcock's movies," Sophie said, then moved towards Veronica, and in a moment, they were engrossed in a conversation about the cover of the latest book we were publishing.

Taking advantage of their distraction, I moved my chair a bit closer to the window and carefully examined the raven, which hadn't flown away despite our movements and gestures. I looked into its eyes, and it met my gaze with surprising awareness—it didn’t turn its head, not even a twitch. For several long seconds, we just stared at each other, and only when it finally flew away did I realize I had been holding my breath the entire time.

Under the influence of that familiar mix of fear and anticipation, I typed into the search engine: The Dream Lord’s Raven. An image appeared—a dark, faceless figure dressed in black with an enormous raven perched calmly on his shoulder. The picture led to a link where I found the portfolio of an illustrator employed at some agency in California. Beside the graphic were the title and caption: Lord Morpheus, King of the Dreaming. The Dreaming. That was precisely the word Dreamlord had used to describe his realm when speaking with me.

A quick glance at the calendar revealed that there was just over a month until the book's release. I bookmarked the image, also noting Rose Walker's name. Such similar terminology could only be a coincidence, but the image, which so faithfully depicted the statuesque man from my dream, suggested otherwise. Perhaps someone else, besides me, had encountered the Dream Lord. And perhaps that person could help me free myself from him.

That day, I saw the black raven several more times. When I left work, it was perched on a lamppost, staring at me motionlessly. During lunch with my mother, it pecked at the restaurant window several times, and later, as we walked home, it flew over our heads so low that its claws nearly grazed her hair. It also appeared in my bedroom window as I was getting ready for bed, wrapped in a robe after a long shower.

It took me only a moment to decide what to do. I shouted "Goodnight" to my mother through the ajar door, then closed it and walked towards the window. I opened it abruptly, but even that didn’t scare away the raven. It merely shook its wings slightly and cawed, its piercing yellow eyes still fixed intently on me.

The chill of the night air swept into my room, but that wasn’t what occupied my thoughts—I had a message to convey.

"Tell your master, the Dream Lord," I said through clenched teeth, weighing each word carefully, "that I will stop my journeys through nightmares if he stops threatening me and sending his spies after me. Like him, I don't want anyone to get hurt, but I will not allow myself to be killed for a skill I never asked for. So be kind enough to tell him to leave me alone."

"Technically, he cannot leave you alone, Rebecca," to my astonishment, the raven responded in a human voice, firm yet tinged with compassion. "You are the child of his Nightmare."

"I am..." the shock left me unable to decide what was more absurd to me: the talking raven or the words it had spoken. "…what?"

"You are a threat to the Dreaming," the bird's voice was that of a man, and suddenly I saw something human in its eyes, a hint of pleading. "As long as you can freely wander his realm, you will continue to wreak havoc in it… just as you have done so far."

"But... I don't understand any of this. I haven't destroyed anything in any of the nightmares; I only helped people wake up, which would have happened sooner or later anyway. How am I a threat to the Dream Lord if I stop interfering in others' nightmares now?"

"It’s not just your wanderings that are dangerous to him, and us all. Your power to travel through the Dreaming comes from a Nightmare that once defied Morpheus. You are the last remnant of that Nightmare, lingering here in the waking world."

"I'm not a nightmare!" I raised my voice, drawing the attention of people walking on the sidewalk beneath my building. "I help people; I don't torment them with horrific visions of pain, suffering, and death. If anyone here is a nightmare, it's Dreamlord, because he's the one terrorizing dreamers, bringing forth their deepest fears!"

"Shit, I don;t think he’d like that..." the bird shook its head nervously and quickly looked around, as if expecting someone to emerge from the shadows at any moment.

"You know what, raven?"

"My name is Matthew," it mumbled, clearly growing more uneasy.

"Alright then, Matthew," I said, leaning closer to its beak and speaking very quietly, mustering all my strength to suppress the mixture of fear and anger rising within me. "I won’t let the Dream Lord capture me or kill me. Tell him that if he wants to catch me, he will have to chase me to my death, through all the nightmares of this world. Either that, or he finds a way to take away the power that terrifies him so much. If I am a mistake of your Lord Morpheus and his Nightmare, then let Lord Morpheus correct his mistake... but I did nothing to deserve to die for it."

I slammed the window shut before the bird could say anything more. In a surge of raw, bubbling emotions, I sat on the bed, burying my head in my arms, my fingers tangling in my hair.

I seems that from now on, every night would be a flight into nightmares. Dreamlord would never forgive, never forget the defiance I had shown him, and he would undoubtedly defend his realm at all costs.

Defend... against me... a child of his Nightmare...

The memory of his infinite eyes came back to me unexpectedly, stirring the familiar feelings that always heralded a nocturnal journey. I hoped that in my own world, I was safe, far from him. And in the Dreaming... there, I had always known quite well how to hide.

The third installment in our posts about our Fandom Lexicon introduces the most terms yet: those beginning with the letter C!

Lexicon Terms Beginning with C (read more)

C Drama: Abbreviation for “Chinese drama.” TV dramas from China

C Pop: Abbreviation for “Chinese pop.” Pop music from China.

C-Ent: Abbreviation for “Chinese entertainment.” Overarching term for the Chinese entertainment industry.

C&C: Abbreviation for “comments and criticism.” Typically used by a creator when indicating whether they do or do not want comments and/or criticism on their work. For example, an author’s note might read, “C&C Welcome.”

Camp NaNo: Shortened term referring to “Camp National Novel Writing Month.” A week-long writing event that occurs twice every year, in April and July. It is hosted by NaNoWriMo, but unlike the original NaNo, participants in Camp NaNo choose their own goals. See also NaNoWriMo (pending).

Canon: Facts about a narrative provided within the published context of the media being referred to. What does and does not count as canon is often up for speculation and scrutiny by fans with different interests/perspectives. Generally considered separate from “Word of God” explanations of the text – canon events must have happened “on the page” or “on the screen” or “in the recording” for the media in question, depending of course on the original format for the media. Read more about what canon means.

Canon Compliant: A fanwork that follow the rules/characterizations/plot of its source material, as interpreted by the creator of that work. Truly canon compliant works follow canon so closely that they could exist in canon without violating any known information about the world and characters, though that can be a moving target for canon compliant works created when canon is still ongoing. Read more about canon compliance.

Canon Divergent: A fanwork that begins at an established point in the source material’s canon, then takes off in its own direction. Read more about canon divergence.

Canon Insert: Most typically refers to when a writer’s original character is added to canon or replaces an existing canon character. Less typically, refers to a character from franchise A who is added to a canon or replaces an existing canon character in a fanwork about franchise B. Read more about character inserts.

Carrd: A service that hosts simple, easy-to-make websites for free, or more advanced ones for a fee, used by fans and other people to provide a central place for their contact details, interests, and personal information they want to share. Learn more on the Carrd website.

Casefic: A genre of fanwork in which the main characters are solving a case. Most common in fandoms where there are episodes or books that are each case-based, such as The X-Files, CSI, or Supernatural. Read more about casefic.

CBT: Abbreviation for “cock and ball torture” and for “cognitive behavioral therapy.” A classic example of just how important context can be for understanding what an abbreviation means!

CC: Abbreviation for the Creative Commons. A license that a user can assign to their own creation, giving permission to use the creation in their own projects provided they follow the terms of the chosen Creative Commons license. Read more about the types of Creative Commons licenses on the Creative Commons webpage.

Cheerleader: A person who reads a fanfic before it’s published and cheers the author on, so they keep up their motivation. The difference to alpha or beta reader is that the cheerleader usually does not offer any concrit nor do they do spelling and grammar (SPAG) editing.

Chibi: A type of art in which the characters are shown with unrealistic proportions, most often with unusually large heads and eyes. Also sometimes called “SD,” which stands for super-deformed. Read more about the term “chibi.”

Cishet: Shortened term for “cisgender heterosexual.” An individual whose assigned gender at birth matches their gender identity and who experiences sexual attraction to the opposite gender and only the opposite gender (excluding non-binary people and other genders outside the binary). While intended to be used to refer to people who are not queer, the term has often become a short-hand insult for aromantic and asexual people, and for bisexual people who are in relationships with person who are of the opposite in-the-binary gender. Cisswap: See Genderbend (pending).

Citrus: See Citrus Scale.

Citrus Scale: A method for rating works from general to explicit without using lewd terminology. Read more about the citrus scale on Fanlore or in our blog post on the topic.

Claims: Typically refers to the point in a Bang of any size when artists are given an anonymized list of fic summaries, choose their favorites, and subsequently find out which authors they will be working with. In reverse bangs, it refers to when authors choose the artist they will be working with. For another usage, see Face Claim (pending).

CNTW: Abbreviation for “chose not to warn.” The creator chose not to use warning tags/labels. This abbreviation and usage is based on the AO3 Archive Warning “Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings.”

Coda: A fanwork that adds a scene that fans wish had been included in the source material. Often described by citing the season and episode that the fanwork is a coda to. For example, “coda to 5 x 2” would be a coda/new final scene created to follow the events of episode 2 of season 5. Sometimes referred to as an “episode tag.” Read more about codas.

Concrit: A shortened term for “constructive criticism.” 1. Critique of a creation that actively contributes to its improvement. In this definition, the criticism is usually intentionally solicited, and the critique is done by the editor or beta reader in collaboration with the writer, after discussion of what the author is trying to accomplish and what their goals are. 2. Unwelcome and unsolicited critique from commenters on fanworks, which givers often try to excuse by leaning on definition 1.

Conlang: A shortened term for “constructed language.” An artificially created language, for example Klingon in Star Trek and Elvish in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Read more about conlangs.

Consentacles: A portmanteau of “consent” and “tentacles.” Used to refer to tentacle sex enjoyed with enthusiastic consent. “Dubious consentacles” is also in use, indicating that the consent is more ambiguous.

Cosplay: Dressing up like a character from a given franchise. Ranges from exact replications to crossovers and/or creative reinterpretations of the source material. Read more about cosplay.

CP: Abbreviation for “couple,” except when it means “child pornography.” In East Asian fandoms, CP refers to the main couple in a work. In Western fandoms, CP most often stands for “child pornography.” This difference has caused many, many problems. Read more about the different uses of CP as an abbreviation.

Crack: A speculative concept that is unbelievably ridiculous. For example, “what if all the characters were chicken nuggets?” Read more about crack.

Crackship: A ship between that is unbelievably ridiculous, such as a character with an object, a location with a creature, or two people who would genuinely never in a thousand years ever work out in a relationship. Not the same thing as an unpopular ship or rare pair. Read more about crackships.

Creation Challenge: A fandom event in which the host(s) come up with a theme and/or a list of prompts, and participants are invited to create fanworks in response to that prompt. Examples of creation challenges include Big Bangs and Bingos.

Crossover: A term with many uses in different contexts; in fandom, it refers to when a fanwork combines multiple sources in some way. Mulder and Scully showing up in a Doctor Who fic, for example. Read more about crossovers.

Crucifix Nail Nipples: A well-known story told by Tumblr user thebibliosphere. Often referenced as an example of just how ridiculous erotica can be. Read the original post.

CSEM: Abbreviation for “child sexual exploitation material.” What it says on the tin – this is a legal/technical term for materials featuring actual children photographed or filmed in sexual situations. Creating or possessing these materials is illegal in most of the world. Read more about the usages and legal definitions of this term.
