Il volume intende illustrare l'attività di quei numerosi disegnatori per le riviste dei grandi music-hall di Parigi che, per snobismo artistico ed intellettuale, sono stati a lungo negletti a causa dell'impiego secondario cui erano destinati i loro modelli. Tra questi, Gesmar, un formidabile genio della grafica che impresse all'arte del costume un impulso pari a quello prodotto da Bakst pochi anni prima per i Balletti Russi; Ranson e Zinoview, due grandi eredi di quella tradizione, Czettel, allievo unico di Bakst divenuto più tardi capo disegnatore all'Opera di Vienna; Zig, degno successore di Gesmar anche nell'arte del manifesto; l'ungherese Gyarmathy, autore d'invenzioni sceniche adottate da molti teatri; l'olandese Wittop divenuto in seguito il primo disegnatore di Broadway; Halouze creatore dello "Stile 1925", l'inglese Dolly Tree, uno dei grandi talenti dell'epoca d'oro della creatività, Dessés divenuto più tardi un noto stilista e maestro di Guy Laroche e di Valentino, il milanese Montedoro subentrato in seguito a Vincente Minnelli come capo disegnatore del Radio City Music Hall, per citare solo alcuni. Lo stesso Erté fu vittima per 30 anni di questa tendenza all'emarginazione. Riscoperto nel 1965 in occasione del più generale recupero dell'Art Déco, ora è universalmente apprezzato per la qualità dei suoi disegni, nel frattempo assurti, per il loro valore storico, artistico ed estetico, al rango di vere opere d'arte. L'opera si propone di rendere omaggio ai suoi non meno creativi e qualificati contemporanei, che per obiettive carenze informative sul loro percorso e contributo artistico (ora in gran parte colmate), non furono pur meritandolo oggetto di analoghi studi e altrettanti onori. Va detto che nessuno di costoro visse a lungo quanto Erté, morto nel 1990 all'età di 98 anni: quando giunse il gran momento, il suo archivio era l'unico ricco di disegni originali e documenti a disposizione dei critici teatrali e degli storici. Degli altri grandi artisti, selezionati tra i migliori disegnatori europei, si era persa quasi ogni traccia essendo scomparsi quasi tutti prima della fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale; di alcuni era noto solo l'acronimo, di altri s'ignorava persino la nazionalità e assai poco si sapeva sui teatri e sulle riviste cui avevano collaborato. A poco valse lo sforzo dei "volontari" ingaggiati da Charles Spencer, nota autorità in materia, e di altri, per saperne di più su questi fantasiosi creatori di scene e costumi. Pur prive di un adeguato supporto informativo molte delle opere dei citati artisti affiancano quelle di Erté nei principali musei, Metropolitan, Victoria & Albert Museum, Arsenal, nelle università di tutto il mondo e nelle collezioni di molti appassionati. Nuove e approfondite ricerche condotte per oltre sei anni hanno permesso di raccogliere un gran volume di dati sul percorso e sul contributo artistico di molti di questi artisti sino a ieri per nulla, o quasi, conosciuti. Il tutto è corredato da un ricco repertorio di opere (oltre 400 immagini a colori), così da permettere a storici e critici una più ampia valutazione dell'arte per il teatro del Novecento e del Déco in generale, periodo in cui si colloca la più parte dei disegni. Il volume comprende inoltre una ampia panoramica sulla storia del music-hall, dalle origini al suo declino, sui principali teatri e riviste in scena negli anni tra le due guerre e sui suoi protagonisti.

Trying not to beat a hasty (rural) retreat

RURAL RETREAT, VA: Yes, Virginia, there happens to be a town by that name, off US 11, I-81 even, about 200 mile to the east of Gatlinburg via the Tri-Cities of Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City, not all that far from the Blue Ridge Mountains even.

(For those of you following Interstate exit locating, it's Virginia Exit 60 off I-81 that Rural Retreat is situated in.)

Pretty much farming country, to be honest about it, though in its time (and, to some extent, still), gateway to a legendary distraction known as Natural Bridge. (But that's for next time.)

But what attracted us to Rural Retreat was the fact of the very Dr. Pepper as was the namesake of the soft drink being originally from there ... and happens to be buried in the local cemetery. By name, Dr. Charles T. Pepper (1830-1903), a Confederate Army surgeon during the Civil War, who had among his children a daughter who was a sweetheart of Charles Alderton, a soda jerk at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas, who on whim developed the concoction of 23 different flavour essences and first began serving at the soda fountain there in 1885.

Oh yes, and the name.

It turns out that the store in Rural Retreat where the notion of Dr Pepper first originated closed a few years ago; it seems Mr. Alderton was apprenticed to the local druggist, and said daughter of Dr. Pepper was a regular customer, perfecting an early prototype of the soda on the sly until it was suggested that Alderton leave town. The rest, they say, is history.

But at any rate, at a local supermarket, out of homage, a case of Dr Pepper was picked up to take comfort in ... and to toast the memory of its namesake. Only it turned out--

"Well, well, well ... and what hath we here, if not for a young duckling?" No less than Fibber Fox, somewhat wisecracking as ever, and with Crazy Claws still along, bound to generate plenty of hilarity with the two swapping wisecracks such as "And you wonder why they called it Rural Retreat to begin with; was it perhaps so the farmers could go out on the sly on Friday and Saturday nights?"

Yes ... things are certain to get interesting ...

Hello, 31/m, AST here. Looking to add one or two more ONE ON ONE RPs featuring Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier! I have almost no content limits whatsoever. It honestly depends on the dynamics between our individual characters, but I can play Erik anywhere from very dominant to service-oriented submissive. So if your Charles is more one or the other, I can work with that. I play a few different versions of Erik: two are modern and one is from the 1950s. All are in their late 20s to early 30s. I enjoy having lots of plot and lots of smut, probably a 50/50 split if I'm being honest (writing it out every time will probably get boring but y'know what I mean - the option is nice! But slow burn is fantastic so we can go 100% plot for a while if that's your jam.)

Basically, take a look at some of the plot ideas and versions and pick whichever one you think you'll jive most with! I'm obviously a huge fan of military themes, war, the CIA, international/diplomatic shit, foreign language, college AU, la la la. Erik ONE played by Ishai Golan

Erik 1 is Israeli and a former medic in the IDF who tried to conscientiously object but ended up being threatened with jailtime - which he could not afford due to caring for his ailing mother and baby sister. He was in Beirut helping both his own side and the enemy and managed to endure his experiences (which he morally objected to at the time) without firing his service weapon once. (This is a modern, vaguely 80s-90s setting.) He then immigrated to America and studied social work, and is now a CPS worker. E1 is rude, brash, and gregarious. You ever see that episode of Conan where he asks the Israeli guy "how do you say excuse me?" and he's just like "you don't! ELBOWS OUT MOTHERFUCKER!" That's this guy. He listens to hardstyle on the walk-man and wears Hawaiian T-shirts. He can meet Charles through his work somehow (if Charles runs his school, perhaps he meets Erik on the job at one of his students' homes and enlists his help). Maybe he seeks Charles out because one of his clients has a mutation and he doesn't know what to do - Charles being a mutant psychologist could be the catalyst there.

Erik TWO played by Adam Brody

Erik 2 is American from Midwood, New York City and an OEF veteran ex-68W, and MIT graduate. He can either have Pietro and Wanda or not (poor Magda gets Fridged, RIP) this version of him features his family heavily (his mother was also a mutant and a time traveler) and is set in the late 2010s. E2 is friendly, charming and talkative. He's the diplomat and the leader, knows several languages, and is a genuine, certified genius. He's the domestic fluff guy, always ready with a joke and a can-do attitude. He's a Conservative Jew, keeps kosher and goes to his dad's house every Saturday for Shabbat. They keep asking him when he's going to Bring A Nice Young Man Home. It's a whole thing. This one requires a bit of finagling but my idea is that Charles is Erik's VA-appointed caseworker and/or therapist (he was "The Good Shepherd" in at least a few incarnations so it's not super out of place). We could also potentially switch it up and have him attend MIT after returning from the Army, and he meets Charles there (either as a fellow student or professor). The CIA are also going to be involved in this, as they have been tracking Erik since he was a child. AS OF the beginning of our RP, this version of Erik believes he is a BASELINE HUMAN. When really, he is actually an Omega-level mutant with the ability to manipulate subatomic particles.

Erik THREE played by Michael Aloni

Erik 3 is Polish and was a sonderkommando at Auschwitz as a teenager. He survived years in this role due to Klaus Schmidt taking a "special interest" in him and only manifested his mutation after liberation. This one is my "darkest" version of Erik, but he is not an asshole or a genocidal insane person. I play him extremely realistically, tactfully, with the knowledge and study of years of history and personal experiences. His faith is important to him. E3 is gentle, curious and compassionate. A more somber personality, this version of Erik is genuinely kind, values life in all of its forms, and speaks softly but with great wisdom. A nurturing soul, he is a lay leader at his synagogue, teaching Torah to some of the younger children. Whip-smart and dry-humored as hell, but it takes time to really see it, since his command of English isn't the greatest. He's either a construction worker in Haifa (Charles would be volunteering there as well), working in International Tracing Service with ICRC in Eilat (these are the people who try and reunite families and track down records torn apart by the war), or a recent immigrant to the United States where he is attending university at MIT (Charles can again either be a professor or a student, or someone adjacent to the university).

In this conversation, Newman discusses how notions of race and nation interacted with sex, gender, and class in often surprising ways during a brutal imperial occupation, and explains how Jamaica’s particular history reveals the deep, pathological contradictions at the heart of the Atlantic slave system.

Thousands are expected for King Charles's coronation on Saturday, eight months following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Historian and author Dr. Brooke Newman specializes in the study of early modern Britain and the British Atlantic world, with a primary focus on slavery.

She was invited by the UK site "The Guardian" to participate in a project called “Cost of the Crown” that investigated the wealth of the royal family from the slave trade to modern times.

Dr. Newman dug through hundreds of pages of archives from the 1600s to discover the key document tying the Royal Family to the transatlantic slave trade. Her work was first reported stateside by VCU News.

“What this document shows is the transfer of 1000 pounds of Royal African Company stock from Edward Colston, the deputy governor at the time, to the incoming king and Governor William of Orange, who would be crowned William the third a couple of months after this transfer,” Dr. Newman explained. “This is a really critical moment in the history of both the Royal African Company and the slave trade from Britain to West Africa to the Americas.”

Richmond doesn’t shy away from the city’s significant ties to the slave trade. City leaders are still working to install a slave museum in Shockoe Bottom near the Lumpkin’s Slave Jail.

“I talk about Richmond quite a bit when I when I talk about slavery and British history, because I do see us at the forefront of the movement to acknowledge history, and a lot of this history is deeply painful,” Dr. Newman noted.

She discovered that the royals encouraged investors to fund the Royal African Company that eventually brought slaves to Richmond.

The professor also saw parallels to the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, too.

“A very similar process was unfolding across the UK, but it was aimed at members of the Royal African Company. For example, the Edward Colston statue in Bristol was torn down by protesters in the summer of 2020 similar to the statues that were torn down in Richmond and for the same reasons,” Dr. Newman said .

Dr. Newman’s research alongside The Guardian made it to the Royal Family and on King Charles’s desk.

“….the royal household is supporting this research through access to the royal collection and the royal archives,” a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said.

According to The Guardian, they believe this is the first time ever that the Royal Family has acknowledged their ties to the slave trade.

Newman also has a book coming out called “The Queen’s Silence: The Hidden History of the British Monarchy and Slavery."

1.Bhangarh Fort, Alwar

Bhangarh Fort is known as the most haunted place in India, and perhaps the greatest unsolved mystery. There is no doubting the fact that anything associated with the supernatural attracts a huge amount of attention and the deserted city of Bhangarh cashes in on that very idea. The many haunted stories of Bhangarh Fort have transformed it into a bucket list destination of sorts.

Most people are of the belief that Bhangarh Fort is haunted and there is no dearth of tales that help in amplifying the mystery that is Bhangarh. Venturing into the fort after sunset is nothing short of an act of bravery as it is supposed to be a Centre for paranormal activity and the Archaeological Survey of India therefore has prohibited people from visiting the Bhangarh Fort at night.

2. Brij Raj Bhavan, Kota

A palace that was once home to Major Charles Burton and is now a heritage hotel, is rather infamous for being a haunted property. The property soon became the talk of the town when people began saying that it was haunted by the ghost of Major Charles Burton.

Even though his spirit does not really harm anyone, guards working here have often heard a man’s voice speaking in English and commanding them to not fall asleep or smoke. And if they do fall asleep on duty, the ghost even slaps them to wake them up. This incident has happened with quite a number of guards. 

3. Charleville Mansion, Shimla

Even Rudyard Kipling in his book My Own True Ghost Story talks about this mansion in Shimla. According to the legend, Victor Bayley came to Shimla with his wife in 1913 when he was appointed the Assistant Secretary of the Railway Board. The couple decided to stay at Charleville Mansion because of its low rent however they did not know that the previous owner of the house, an army officer left the mansion because of a poltergeist’s activities in it.

Since then, the house has seen several occupants and all of them have their own experiences to share. Even though the experiences are enough to send a chill down the spine of the readers and audience, the fact that these ghosts have never been violent in nature brings a sense of relief

4. Kundanbagh Witches’ Lair, Hyderabad

Located in the Kundanbagh area, this house has a peculiar story behind it. According to the story, a burglar went into the house to loot the owners but when he entered the house, he found the dead bodies of three women there. A mother and her two daughters who lived here. He panicked and informed the police about it. Upon further investigation, it was found that the women had been dead for almost six months.

Despite this fact, there were no reports or inquiries about them by the neighbors or locality people. It was also because these women had weird rituals that they would perform every night. The three would light candles and walk around the house. They would also have bottles filled with what looked like blood that they would hang in the veranda. The mother would often scare people off with her antics. Thus, no one really interacted with them.

5. Vas Villa, St Mark’s Road Bangalore

The story is that there were two sisters Dulcie and Vera Vaz. Since their house was in the main market place, they were under constant pressure by the land dealers. Then one fine day, Dulcie was murdered, and Vera Vaz escaped. Since then, the house is left untouched with no information about Vera Vaz.

“It was past mid night and there in the road we saw a woman with white hair and white saree collecting garbage. Her features were just the same as we see the movies of old female ghosts, but at that time she didn't appear to be anything different. She said something to one of us but we could not understand and moved ahead.” told by one of the neighbors.

6. Tunnel No.33, Shimla-Kalka Train Route'

One of the longest tunnels is on the Shimla-Kalka route that is a straight tunnel and lasts for over two minutes. Colonel Barog who was a railway engineer was given the task of constructing a tunnel in this region Alas, he had miscalculated and even after boring holes and digging till the center of the mountain, the laborers from different ends did not meet in the middle.  Due to the colonel’s folly, he was fired from the job and also fined by the government.  This really depressed him and he felt absolutely humiliated.

 

Colonel Barog shot himself out of his misery. Barog was buried outside the incomplete tunnel to pay homage to his work. But locals believe he never left the place. His spirit still haunts the tunnel.  But even today, people say Colonel Barog pays a visit to the tunnel. He even chats with people who are unaware of his existence but those who know who he is get spooked out. He is also spotted there and then vanishes after a while. The government tried sealing the incomplete tunnel but every time the lock was broken.

7 .House Number W-13 At GK-II ,Delhi

 Located in Greater Kailash-1, one of the most affluent localities of Delhi is house number W-3. This house is a dark reminder, a dark song that things that go bump in the night do exist, and they're closer to us than we will ever know.  The case was never solved and the property was abandoned. As time passed, the property came to be known as the ghost house. Call it human nature to attach paranormal thoughts to murder and abandonment, the house remained an attraction for over 27 years. Nobody dared enter the premises after sunset and many reported screaming and wailing noises over time.

8. Bonacaud Bungalow, Thiruvananthapuram

Popularly known as 25 GB, the bungalow is located amidst lush thick green forests of the Agastya Mountain ranges. The story goes that the Britisher, who built the bungalow, was the manager of a tea estate. He lived in a single-storied mansion with his family. Although he was said to have loved his home, he returned to London with his wife when his child was found killed under mysterious circumstances. Seeing a young girl by the window, the sound of breaking glass and the screams and laughs of a child appeared and the Bungalow entered a state of disrepair.

9. Dow Hill, Kurseong, West Bengal

Located around 30km from Darjeeling is the Dow Hill of Kurseong, which is the boss of haunted places in India. It is one such place where paranormal activities do not seize whether day or night! Often compared to Beauty and the Beast, Kurseong’s beauty has enough ghost stories too. The Death Road which lies between the Dow Hill Road and Forest Office is the hotspot. People have seen a headless ghost of a young boy walking and disappearing into the forest and also experienced being followed or watched by a bodiless entity. While some have seen a red pair of red eyes staring at them from the forest, others have seen the ghost of a woman in grey. The paranormal activities are so intense that most visitors lose sense or kill themselves.

10. Lambi Dehar Mines, Uttarakhand 

Located 10 km from Mussoorie, this abandoned mine stretches a couple of kilometers in length, adding to the eerie factor and one of the most haunted places in India. The story goes that during the 1990s, around 50000 mineworkers lost their lives here due to inappropriate mining practices. The workers succumbed to a painful death coughing and lung disorder. Ever since then people have reported mysterious incidents at the site like helicopter crashes or hearing wailing and crying in pain.

Here is a little bit of info about Coach Norman Murray : Norman is currently a Deacon at Praise Temple Apostolic Faith Church of Virginia in Woodford, VA. He currently serves under Pastor Terrence S. Brown. Norman was ordained in 2013 and has served in this capacity since. He is now part of the ministerial staff as he moves towards becoming a licensed minister. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Norman has lived in various cities along the east coast and mid-west. In 2008, the Lord saw fit to have Norman build his spiritual foundation in Minnesota. It wasn’t until March of 2009 when Norman decided to surrender his life completely to Christ and was baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost.
