Chef/Diner sims are unironically a great way to teach younger people the basics of project management and planning/scheduling.

You have this much time to do a thing. This part can be done and sit indefinitely (prepping ingredients). This part needs to be addressed within X time upon completion or there are constraints (taking it off the burner). These two parts need to finish within two seconds of each other (the food of the first will start to go cold) but they take different amounts of time to complete so you need to plan out the order in which you start them. You need to order in new ingredients and the resupply takes time so you have to factor that into your planning, because sometimes multiple tasks require the same ingredients and you only have the one unit left.

You juggle timing, supply, consequences, prioritization, lots of stuff!

Maybe business schools should just require undergrads to get a neopets account. They do have an entire economic simulator with stocks and shops and so on ...

Little Chef - Full Review

Author’s note: ok so i know i had just listed down games i was gonna review and this isn’t one of them, but i saw Rock Paper Shotgun (shoutout to them! one of my favorite curators for sure) talk about this and gave it a try and it was SO cute ✨

Warning! Very minor spoilers in the screenshots, so if you want to play the game completely blind maybe don’t focus too hard on the background haha

Little Chef is a 2D physics-based game where you can mix ingredients to figure out different recipes. It takes place in an adorable little kitchen with objects you can interact with, allowing you to pick them up and drop them in the pot to cook. You can take the time to experiment with different combinations of ingredients, or get hints from the names in the recipe book you’re given.

The ingredients you have to work with are pretty common, so it’s not too difficult to figure out which to combine to make which food. Recipes range from needing 2 ingredients up to 5, making the latter recipes a little trickier to get. Successfully making a recipe results in lovely golden smoke from the pot, with your finished product popping up on screen, and the corresponding recipe unlocked in your book.

The book also includes a section for “failed” recipes, which you can also try to complete. A few of them require specific ingredients, while the others are just happy accidents from mixes gone wrong. Finding all of the recipes in the book, including the failed ones, gets you a congratulations screen, calling you a Master Chef! Perhaps a little reminder that your failures are part of what makes you successful 💜 (or that being a completionist pays off, haha!)

Surprisingly, the things you can place in the pot aren’t limited to just the edible. Most of what you can find in the kitchen can be moved around, and some even picked up, so it’s inevitable that a lot of us will try tossing those in the pot as well. This mechanic makes for some funny interactions and captions in the recipe book, giving you all the more reason to try and find them all 💫

The captions are another part of what makes this game such a treat to play. Each recipe gets its own caption, lovingly written like a slice of life. They make the game feel so much more personable and charming, and were what enticed me to get every single recipe just to see what the character had written.

As the game is free, it still has room to grow and be fleshed out. I’m sure if given the chance, the devs would add more recipes, and maybe some audio. Currently the entire game is silent, but in my opinion it would benefit from some ambient noise, maybe little bits of sound design like a “plop” when the ingredients are dropped, or a “ding!” when the food finishes cooking.

Little Chef reminds me a lot of Little Alchemy with the way you experiment, but shorter and much cozier. On the Itch page (which I’ll link below), the devs cite Potion Craft, Bartender: The Right Mix, and Doodle God: Alchemy Simulator as inspirations, which I could very much feel throughout the game. I really hope they continue developing this game, and as always can’t wait to see what they’ll do next 🌠

Short but sweet -- I give it 5 stars out of 5! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My favourite leitmotifs are definitely from the Mass Effect Trilogy. The score for those games was impeccable. 100/10. Couldn’t be better.

I think the best one imo is probably ME1’s Critical Mission Failure theme being very close to if not the same as Saren’s theme (for those who aren’t familiar with the games, he is the main antagonist in the first game) and THE CHILLS.

Close runners up are Uncharted Worlds, Vigil and Leaving Earth. THE SOUNDTRACKS WERE SO GOOD.

leitmotifs never get old to me like holy shit dude there’s this melody that corresponds to this one guy and if you hear the melody it means the guy is there. holy shit. and sometimes it refers to ideas too not just guys. has anyone heard about this

When I shared with my friend about my NEED to get grade A+ for all my dishes in Chef Life game or I'll be frustrated with myself, he said I'm unique bc most people play games to relax BUT THIS IS HOW I RELAX. I have to be chill at work & life but in game I'm FREEEE TO INDULGE IN MY PERFECTIONISM. Everything is within my control. If other players can achieve perfect grades I SHOULD TOO. I feel so satisfied when I finally achieve smth perfectly. The serotonin.

Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator Review

A última vez que os jogos tiveram esse efeito terapêutico foi quando plantei milho e morangos em Stardew Valley. :) Você só teve que aguentar as primeiras cinco a sete horas, nada estava claro ainda, tudo é complicado e complicado, os auxiliares de cozinha não ajudam, mas chatos, os clientes pedem a sopa pronta errada que está no fogão, e você corre por toda a cozinha, tipo Em um turno de trabalho, há cerca de oito anos, eu estava correndo por aí pegando flashbacks. Cansei-me, fechei-o rapidamente, mas continuei a sofrer à noite por flambar, assar e temperar adequadamente... E então tudo ficou cada vez melhor. Quando você entende a quantidade absurda de produtos, como encomendá-los corretamente, cortá-los, montar a cozinha a seu critério, e os cozinheiros finalmente melhoram gradativamente e (vejam só!) ajudam em vez de atrapalhar, o jogo se torna agradável e emocionante. Cooking Simulator me congelou e me cansou de várias maneiras, e nunca terminei de jogar, mas aqui gostei muito mais do processo de cozimento, das receitas e de todos os seus componentes. Tudo parece ótimo (você sabe, aqueles sons de facas batendo, fornos apitando, fogo no fogão a lenha) e desenhado (você tira a lasanha da panela e a quantidade dela diminui, os pratos auto-servidos ficam como planejado, o alterações de imagem). Tudo é muito dinâmico e bonito. Você pode decorar o restaurante a seu critério, personalizar o cardápio, escolher as cores dos pratos da cozinha, aprender e aprimorar receitas quase infinitamente, fazer conquistas... enfim, um abismo de atividades. Obrigado aos desenvolvedores pelo maravilhoso projeto e inspiração para futuras conquistas.
