Our story starts one crisp February day over at Sage’s Island. Classes had finally ended when every draconic fae or otherwise received a beautifully decorated red envelope, inviting them to attend the New Year’s celebration in the Land of the Red Dragon.
Malleus of course was especially delighted in receiving an invitation. His mood improved when Lilia explained that depending on zodiac year, various people relating to that zodiac are personally invited. Since this year is the Year of the Dragon, anyone with a draconic heritage is personally invited. Plus, the invite says that loved ones and close friends are invited as unofficial honored guests.
Meanwhile over at Ramshackle, there was a tad bit more chaos than normal. Because of how many of the students are draconic, there were several invinations that were sent to the diverse dorm. Luckily, Freya was able to call a dorm meeting before walls were destroyed. She had created a simple enough system: the draconic students would be choosing who they would be taking with them as their plus ones. Anyone that is caught trying to persuade their opinions gets duct taped to the ceiling for the rest of the week.
The day of the invitees and plus ones were supposed to arrived has finally arrived. Malleus, Nile, Zhenwei, and the other met up alongside their plus ones. After some explanations on who invited who and banter (mainly from Mallory and Malleus), everyone took off to the Land of the Red Dragon, where they were all personally welcome before entering.
At the entrance, NRC ran into Nyla and some of the other girls from White Ash and Charm Garden. Nyla explained that she was invited as well being part of the Drake family. Huifen and Longmei, two students from House Meihua in Charm Garden Academia. Longmei, a descendant of the legendary Red Dragon that helped save the nation, and Huifen, a direct descendant of the Warrior Maiden who helped the Red Dragon, are personally invited to the New Years Festival and were personally tasked to act as a tour guide for the honored guests and their plus ones and take them to the hotel.
But before the tour could start, everyone needed to change into traditional Land of the Dragon outfits for the festival. After getting dressed and admiring each other's outfits, they all were lead to their hotel that they all shared with enough rooms for everyone.
For a majority of the festival, everyone spent time shopping for souvenirs and snacks, learning about the country's history and culture, watching dragon and lion dances, trying the nation's food, and so much more. One tradition they all did was help sweep the Emperor's palace because they were from out of the nation. Enter Several Twistunes Here.
On the last day on the festival, Malleus and the other dragons were tasked to set off the first fireworks of the festival (Mallory got a firecracker instead because he's still a child). Enter Twistune Here. Before anyone of them left, the students were all given red envelopes that were filled with money. Huifen explained that this was a tradition that the older generation give a monetary gift for the younger generation.

This is tangential to the point, and pure speculation on my part, but I've always found it interesting that the type of cuisine they eat on the show clearly plays a role on establishing whether the person is "good" or "evil".
Everyone in the show who has ever dined with traditional Korean food had all been good-adjacent people, mostly the people of Manyang: Dongsik, Sangbae, Jaeyi, Jihwa, Jihoon, Jeongje, Gilgu, Gwangyoung.
(Which is why it also says a lot that by the end of the show, Jeongje and Gilgu are both not part of the Korean cuisine table anymore.)
Everyone in the show who has ever dined with Japanese / Chinese food had all been the evil-adjacent people, specifically the trio of Han Kihwan, Do Haewon, and Lee Changjin, with the addition of Jung Cheolmoon.
In fact, it's fascinating to me that the "villains" of the story have all always met at a Japanese restaurant, and dined specifically with Japanese cuisine like sashimi.
Again, this is pure speculation on my part, but I'm fascinated by the not-so-subtle portrayal of Japanese cuisine as adjacent to "evil"—considering how South Korea has never gotten over their grudge against their former colonizer, Japan.
And South Korea culturally has always been a grudge-bearing country—rightfully so—against the countries that have colonized them.
This political relationship also comes into play with the way the illegal immigrants and prostitutes in the show, and the ones supplying illegally acquired yuan for gambling, just had to be Chinese—considering as well South Korea's political friction with China as the one who sided with North Korea during the war.
(It does make me doubly appreciative of the Manyang group, and Joowon as well, that this political prejudice didn't stop them from seeking justice for these Chinese immigrants, especially Lee Geumhwa. It says a lot of how despite his imperfections, Joowon is inherently good (and intelligent) for never allowing himself to blinded by any sort of bias.)
As for Joowon himself, it's fascinating that he's neither of the two; in the beginning he's shown to neither dine with Korean nor Japanese cuisine, but his fare is more of the Western cuisine—as was shown when he cooked up that meal for Dongsik at his apartment. Again, unsurprisingly, considering he spent most of his youth and early teenage years at a boarding school in England before moving back to South Korea.
It's fascinating then that what he dined with together with the Manyang group at the end of the show is budae jiggae, which is a fusion of American and Korean food that came up during the Korean war with leftover meat out of U.S. bases in South Korea.
And it should be noted here too, interestingly, that South Korea has always viewed the U.S. as their political ally.
(For Joowon to be symbolized by Western food is fascinating, because if it's likened to South Korea's politics, it's like the Manyang group sees him as not one of theirs—but can still be a potential ally.)
As I've always said, it's impossible to separate Beyond Evil as a show from the cultural context of South Korea, and when you view it from that lens, it's fascinating that even the country's political biases are revealed symbolically in the show too.
For the symbolism of budae jiggae in the show in particular, it was first shown on the flashback during the dinner after Nam Sangbae's death, when he first tried their town's new restaurant catering to fusion cuisines. And it's symbolic of how everyone was wary to try something new at first, something foreign—and how it was Dongsik who had the first taste.
It says a lot for Joowon's character in particular, because if he has always been symbolized by Western cuisine and the Manyang group (including Dongsik) has always been symbolized by traditional Korean cuisine, the way they dined together on budae jiggae in their reunion lunch at Jaeyi's speaks so significantly of Joowon finally being a part of their family.

Exploring the World of Mushroom Chocolate: A Fusion of Flavors and Wellness
Tumblr media
In the ever-evolving landscape of gourmet and wellness foods, mushroom chocolate has emerged as a fascinating and delightful trend. Combining the rich, velvety taste of chocolate with the unique benefits of medicinal mushrooms, this innovative treat offers a blend of indulgence and health benefits that’s captivating the culinary world. Let’s dive into the intriguing world of mushroom chocolate and discover why it’s gaining popularity.
A Brief History of Mushroom Chocolate
Mushrooms have been valued for their medicinal properties for thousands of years, particularly in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Varieties like Reishi, Chaga, Lion’s Mane, and Cordyceps have been used to boost immunity, enhance cognitive function, and reduce stress. The idea of combining these powerful fungi with chocolate, however, is a more recent development.
Chocolate itself has a rich history, once considered a "food of the gods" by ancient civilizations such as the Mayans and Aztecs. Its appeal has only grown over the centuries, evolving from a bitter beverage to the sweet treat we know today. The fusion of mushrooms and chocolate marries the ancient wisdom of mushroom use with the modern love for chocolate, creating a product that is both delicious and potentially beneficial for health.
The Health Benefits of Mushroom Chocolate
One of the key reasons behind the rise of mushroom chocolate is its purported health benefits. Each type of mushroom used in these chocolates brings its own set of advantages:
Reishi: Known as the "mushroom of immortality," Reishi is believed to support the immune system, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Incorporating Reishi into chocolate creates a soothing treat that can help you unwind.
Lion’s Mane: This mushroom is famous for its potential cognitive benefits. It may enhance memory, focus, and overall brain function, making Lion’s Mane-infused chocolate a popular choice for those seeking a mental boost.
Chaga: Packed with antioxidants, Chaga is often hailed for its ability to fight inflammation and support overall wellness. Chaga chocolate can be a tasty way to introduce more antioxidants into your diet.
Cordyceps: Known for its energy-boosting properties, Cordyceps is often used by athletes and those with active lifestyles. Cordyceps chocolate might be the perfect pick-me-up before a workout or during a midday slump.
While the benefits of medicinal mushrooms are still being studied, many enthusiasts swear by the positive effects of these fungi, particularly when combined with the comfort and indulgence of chocolate.
The Taste Experience
One might wonder how the earthy flavors of mushrooms pair with the sweet and sometimes bitter notes of chocolate. Surprisingly, the combination works exceptionally well. The subtle umami flavor of the mushrooms complements the richness of the chocolate, adding depth and complexity to the taste. Depending on the type of mushroom and chocolate used, the flavor profile can range from mildly earthy to richly decadent.
For those new to the concept, mushroom chocolate is typically crafted with dark chocolate, which tends to have a robust flavor that balances the earthiness of the mushrooms. However, variations with milk chocolate or even white chocolate are also available, catering to different taste preferences. Alice Mushroom
How to Enjoy Mushroom Chocolate
Mushroom chocolate can be enjoyed in many ways. Some prefer to savor it as a simple snack, letting the flavors melt in their mouth. Others incorporate it into their wellness routines, consuming it as a daily supplement or before activities requiring focus and energy.
It can also be a great addition to desserts. Imagine a mushroom chocolate fondue, a luxurious hot chocolate infused with medicinal mushrooms, or even mushroom chocolate brownies. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your culinary creativity.
Where to Find Mushroom Chocolate
As the trend grows, mushroom chocolate is becoming more widely available. Many health food stores and specialty chocolate shops now carry various mushroom chocolate products. Additionally, numerous online retailers offer a wide selection, often with detailed information about the specific mushrooms used and their potential benefits. Polkadot
For those interested in a more hands-on approach, making your own mushroom chocolate at home is an option. By purchasing high-quality mushroom powder and your favorite chocolate, you can experiment with creating your own custom blends tailored to your taste and wellness goals. Mr Mushies
The Future of Mushroom Chocolate
As awareness of both the benefits of medicinal mushrooms and the demand for functional foods increases, mushroom chocolate is poised to become a staple in the health-conscious consumer's diet. Its ability to combine pleasure with wellness makes it an exciting innovation in the world of gourmet foods.
In conclusion, mushroom chocolate is more than just a trend—it's a delightful fusion of ancient medicinal wisdom and modern culinary artistry. Whether you’re looking to boost your health, enjoy a new taste experience, or simply indulge in a unique treat, mushroom chocolate offers something for everyone. As it continues to grow in popularity, we can expect to see even more creative and delicious variations of this fascinating food. So, why not give it a try and discover the magic of mushroom chocolate for yourself?

“Homecoming” - A Short Snippet
Based on the commission, "Fluff (Xiao with Jean's family for lunar new year)."
(Aka, everyone should spend Lunar New Year with Jean and their family)
You've never liked Lunar New Year.
You've associated it with stiff clothes, good manners, your dad's business associates and their stepford wives. The best part of the day, if you're being entirely honest, is sneaking back to your bedroom, cracking open a window, and smoking a joint with your head half-out so the smell doesn't stick to your clothes.
Every year, unfailingly, you resist the urge to slip into the kitchen - surround yourself with the smell of fried dumplings and braised meat, the quick staccato of Cantonese among the catering staff - and instead head back to your place in the dining room. You know you're romanticizing the kitchen, the idea of the workers going home to their extended families (always happy families, in your imagination) and relaxing, the clink of Tsingtao beers being popped open while aunties gossip and uncles smoke and older cousins exchange side-ways glances while younger cousins duck beneath the skirts of a restaurant tablecloth giggling - and, yeah, you're pretty sure this image of the Chinese family, of the holiday, is as stereotypical and problematic as all hell - but, it's nice to pretend. Instead of being where you actually are.
This year, though, is different. This year you aren't in New York, you aren't in your family's Park Avenue townhouse, you're wearing a fucking sweater and jeans (a disownable sin, in your father's eyes, you're sure) and (God-forbid) helping to make the food, your fingers clumsily folding the dough into a dumpling-shape while Jean's mom gently gives you pointers. You hear Jean exclaim next to you as they finish making the "world's smallest dumpling" - the size of the pad of their pinky - and you peek over to see Jean's dad's lower it good-naturedly into the pot, careful that it doesn't get swept away.
It makes you want to cry - the domesticity of it. You find yourself blinking hard, looking up briefly at the ceiling.
Later into the night, much, much later, you thank them - Jean, and their mom, and their dad - for having you over. That you know you're not family - but here, Jean's mom interrupts you and says, any friend of Jean's is our family, and it's so fucking Hallmark you want to curl up and die because you don't think you can live like this, knowing that families like this actually exist and that they would willingly invite you - fucked-up, previously drugged-up you - to join them.
Instead, you watch as Jean's mom's arms open into a hug and you hug her back tight, fiercely - unable to stop yourself from inhaling the smell of her cardigan, scratchy against your cheek, the faintest hint of mothballs. And you stick out a hand to give Jean's dad a proper handshake, and he does but also pats you on the back like you're a good kid in that awkward, middle-aged dad way and Lord - this family is fucking testing your ability to not cry (weep, sob) in public.
By the time you're back in your own apartment (somehow you made it without a single tear escaping), you find yourself lying on your bed, focusing on your breathing, trying to ignore the tightness in your chest, an unfamiliar crush in your sternum that, if you didn't know what an actual heart attack should feel like, you'd be pretty fucking certain you were having a heart attack.
So, you don't call 911.
You pull up your phone, scroll down to the number you want.
The phone rings once, twice, three times - and you consider hanging up, but then.
Your sister's voice. God, how long has it been? You were allies once. A long time ago. Friends.
"Xiao?" she says.
"Hey, sis," you say. "Xin nian kuai le."

Mugshot Monday - "Dragonflies Sake Cup" by Miya Inc. with Superior Junmai Ginjo sake by Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Company
Happy New Year!! 🎉 I can't believe it's 2024.
Our tradition on New Year's Eve has been to make Japanese Gyoza together as a family. It's the perfect balance of tedious teamwork mixed with fun conversation and good food.
This year we also made Chinese Chicken Fried Rice and homemade Mochi Balls! It was all soooo delicious.
Cindy and I also like to enjoy a bottle of sake on New Year's Eve.
We'll pour each other small cups of sake all night using our awesome dragonfly sake set we bought during our Pearson-Cater family vacation in Texas back in 2016.

After watching the Green Bay Packers beat the MN Vikings in the much anticipated Sunday Night Football game, we spontaneously decided to watch Star Wars Episode 4 "A New Hope". 😂
For some reason, it felt so perfect watching that movie while bringing in the new year. It was a fun night.
Cheers everyone! ✌🏻

Chinese Food
I’ve written a whole bunch about my first date with J. If you check out When We Met posts here, you can read about it in depth if you’d like. But this post is about our second date, and about who J is, and about his amazing consistency and how much I’m still totally in love with him and that particular part of him after 19 years.
First, a little background on J. I’ve mentioned before that J is a lot like Jimmy Chitwood from the movie Hoosiers. That’s because J really did grow up in rural Indiana. And a consequence of this, other than wholesome farm boy good looks and steadfast Midwestern integrity, is that he’s not a very adventurous eater. J grew up considering pizza from a chain delivery joint as Italian food. He hadn’t tried much international or fusion style cuisine when we’d met. In fact, he hadn’t tried any at ALL until he was an adult working on his own, spending a lot of time away from home with a bunch of people who didn’t grow up in rural Indiana. And he’s not exactly a master chef either. (Some day I’m gonna replant the post Peanut Butter here about J making me dinner in our newlywed days. Seriously.) So he wasn’t experimenting at restaurants or in the kitchen. Our first date was at a TGI Fridays. Not to insult Fridays (it’s still my favorite cheesecake), but they are a fairly tame and safe first date place. Everybody will like something there. It’s not a horizon broadening kind of a place to eat.
I’ve also written before about how J pays attention to me. He always has. He paid attention to the information I wrote on my dating site profile. Not just ‘woman seeking man’ and not even just 'college educated feminist seeking committed relationship,’ but details like 'loves to cook and addicted to watching shows starring celebrity chefs’ and 'used to work at a high end catering service.’ He surmised that *I* was an adventurous eater. So as our first date was winding down (and I had *already* fallen really hard for him), J said, “I’d like to take you out again. Soon. Saturday?” Um…YES! “Do you like Chinese food? *I* like Chinese food! I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago with some friends at work. Where’s your favorite place to get Chinese food? Let’s go there.” That’s where we went on our second date. J hadn’t tried any Chinese food until he was 31 years old, only a few weeks before I found him online. J ordered General Tso’s chicken on our second date, and told me the story of how he’d ordered that on his first try of Chinese food, based on friends’ recommendations, and that he really liked it, but they didn’t tell him not to actually EAT those hot pepper pods that come in that dish. He learned that the hard way. We laughed. He liked his meal at the place I suggested too. We go back there fairly often on date nights (or we did pre-pandemic; and we’ve gotten a few take-outs from there since then too). We’ve celebrated some birthdays and anniversaries there. J has since tried lots of other dishes. And he’s eaten Japanese and Greek and Mexican food for the first time since we met (and now he likes them). He’s even traveled TO China for work once (he survived, but he did eat more than his fair share of granola bars on that trip).
Anyway, when J came home from his bike trip a bit early in 2019, we had a couple of free days together while The Boy was at school, and on one of those days, we took a motorcycle ride together, and we went out to lunch at 'our’ Chinese place. The same place that we ate on our second date. (Yeah…it’s still there.) The same place we’ve celebrated some milestones together.
I like that J and I have 'our’ places. I know a lot of people would think that a foodie like me would constantly want to try somewhere new, and I do enjoy trying new places and new dishes, but…there’s some real comfort and security knowing that we’ve been together long enough and have enough in common…we like enough of the same things…to have 'our’ places. There are a few restaurants that we frequent and think of as 'our places’ because of J’s consistency. These places are familiar, but they aren’t boring. And they aren’t only nostalgic for me. When we go there, I remember our past visits there, but we also make new memories every time. The last trip to actually eat inside 'our’ Chinese place alone, we talked about how The Boy has begun playing the violin and he’s doing really well adjusting in middle school. And while we were having that discussion, I could remember J telling me that story about eating the whole hot pepper pod on our second date. That’s something special, isn’t it? I think it is. The weekend after Thanksgiving, we went with our son to eat inside; our son’s first time eating inside with us. Even after nearly three years of having the dining room closed, the staff remembered us. ‘Nice to see you again.’ That’s something special too.
This is maybe a bit of a rambling post, but I felt like sharing my long history of love with J, a man who cares what I like…who’s grown with me and gotten more adventurous since we’ve been together…but who also can make me feel safer and more comfortable than anybody else, no matter where we are, and who never gets tiresome or dull, no matter how many times we go to the same familiar place.
This was my fortune inside the fortune cookie the last time we went to 'our’ Chinese place alone:
Tumblr media
I normally don’t buy into this type of thing. But this one? Because of J? I mean…*accurate.*

The Evolution Of Surf Tourism: From Niche Hobby To Global Economic Powerhouse
The Rise of Surf Travel Surfing has grown from a niche hobby into a massive global tourist industry. What started as a local passion among a small group of beach towns is now big business drawing visitors from around the world seeking the perfect wave. Surf tourism first began in the 1960s as surfer culture emerged and enthusiasts looked beyond their home breaks to seek out new waves. Destinations like Hawaii, Australia and California became hotspots that saw the first surf camps, guesthouses and tours catered towards travelers. Early surf tourism relied heavily on word-of-mouth as surfers shared trip details and recommendations with their peers. Building Infrastructure for Surfers In the 1980s and 90s, places that had surfing appeal recognized its potential to boost their economies and began investing seriously in infrastructure for surf tourists. Accommodations ranging from hostels to high-end resorts tailored to surfers popped up near top breaks. Car rentals, surfcamps, retailers and restaurants joined in to capture the growing surf market. Travel operators organized specialized surf tours that made planning surf trips turnkey for those without local knowledge. Destinations like Indo, Costa Rica, Mexico and Portugal led the way in purposefully developing their surf tourism sectors. This built the supply to meet the rising demand from dedicated surf travelers willing to globe trot for epic waves. Global Growth and New Frontiers Entering the new millennium, Global Surfing Tourism had evolved into a multibillion-dollar industry. Advances in equipment like durable wetsuits and high performance boards allowed hardy surfers to expand surf travel into more remote and colder climates. Places like Norway, Iceland, New Zealand and South Africa joined the surf map as new must-see destinations. The proliferation of online surf reports and forecasting apps gave tourists unprecedented wave knowledge before trips. Low cost airlines opened up accessibility to surf spots worldwide. Today surf tourism thrives in over 100 countries with specialty surf travel companies taking travelers to less charted territories in search of uncrowded waves. Though Hawaii, California, Australia, Indonesia and Latin America still dominate, new frontiers constantly emerge to cater to an international surf audience hungry to experience the planet's best breaks. Environmental and Cultural Impacts With the vast popularity and economic rewards of surfing tourism come responsibilities to manage impacts. Crowds at famous breaks have led to overuse of resources and conflicts between stakeholders. Infrastructure development at destinations sometimes outpaces regulations to protect natural environments and small town qualities of life that originally attracted surfers. Surf enclaves grapple with issues like pollution, parking and congestion from growing visitor numbers. Environmental stewardship programs and carrying capacity rules aim to maintain surf breaks and experiences into the future. Respecting local communities and cultures coping with changes brought by surf tourism also warrants attention. However, sustainable practices preserve these special places for continued enjoyment by both residents and travelers seeking ocean connections through surfing.

The Planet Hotel, Guangzhou, China
Located on a busy street in Guangzhou’s LIwan district, surrounded by foreign trade markets (mostly textiles) is a unique lodging choice that will whip you away from “Planet China” and into its own universe.  The Planet Hotel is an ambitious attempt to bring an element of surprise, western concepts of hospitality and one-of-kind décor to an otherwise bland and uninspiring hotel experience in this part of the city.
I visited this hotel during an admittedly sleepy time of the year, the heat of the Chinese New Year, so my experience was different in that the hotel occupancy was low and the surrounding markets and businesses were closed for the week.  Still, it did not distract from my experience.
Building:
Location:  The location is in a part of the city that is heavy with foreign trade and not necessarily near any tourist attractions.  A short walk south into the vibrant Liwan district or a few blocks to the metro will get you where you need to go.  Unless you’re in the area for business, you’ll be out of your way to stay here.
Facilities:  The building is not a new construction and consists of a mid-rise, 2 wing design.  The hotel does not offer any kind of recreational facilities such as a gym, spa, or swimming pool.  But there was a coffee shop/wine bar adjacent to the main lobby that (because of the holiday week I stayed) was empty and not in use.  The well-stocked gift and snack shop was a welcome site when waiting for the elevator.  I only got to experience the restaurant on the top floor for the morning breakfast.
Amenities:  Everything is branded in this hotel.  EVERYTHING!  You can’t look at the towels, toilet paper holder, or even the waste basket without it reminding you that you’re staying at “The Planet Hotel”.  The room and bathroom amenities were abundant for this caliber hotel.
Décor:  This is the real star of the show.  Some people might be put off by the pseudo-“cheesy” elements throughout but the property knows what it is and ultimately made for a fun atmosphere.  You never knew what splash of bright color or alien statue would await behind each corner.  During my visit, the carpets in the rooms and in the hallways were so thick that you actually felt like you were bouncing, or floating in a low gravity space station.  The white walls and fixtures felt like they’re right out of the Apple design studios and the distant hum of the Air Conditioners added to the utter worldly environment.
Service
Staff:  The front desk staff were excellent and welcoming when I first entered.  It was a little humid outside and I was offered some sweet tea and a hot towel at check-in.  The process was efficient and the front desk agents were well trained to accommodate a foreign guest.  In the restaurant, which is rather small for a hotel this size, the staff and especially the manager on duty were very diligent in escorting guests in and out and providing service and space to enjoy the breakfast.  They in particular, should be commended for executing this delicate dance with guests and available dining space each morning.
Food:  The abundant buffet style breakfast food catered to both Chinese and western tastes and the egg bar gave my requests quickly and to my liking.
Cleanliness:  The rooms and hallways did not smell like cigarette smoke, a comment of note when dealing with Chinese hotels as it’s quite rare.  In fact, there was a pleasant smell throughout the hotel, much like a “new carpet” smell.  The bathrooms, rooms, and common areas were all free of clutter and dust; a noticeably attentive housekeeping staff taking care of everything.
Experience
Comfort:  The beds were extremely comfortable.  The soft touch bed sidings and super soft mattress made getting out of bed in the morning a fight with my will power.  However, the interesting mid-century inspired space chair in the room looked cool, but was a chore to hang out in for more than a few minutes.  The standard rooms are small and could be considered crowded for more than 2 people.
Uniqueness:  This is definitely a unique experience hotel for this market.  Rooms facing the road will offer the only real view of the outside world.  The room I was in had a disappointing view of the boarded-up windows of the office building next door.  The attempt at what it’s trying to do is worthy, but things like the space capsule showers with changing lights and loud music have a less than stellar execution.  The crazy alien characters and ultra-modern artwork of the lobby more than make up for those shortcomings.  You won’t find another hotel stay like this in Guangzhou.
Value:  Definitely a good value for the money considering the lack of other inspiring competition, the bountiful breakfast buffet, and the unique concept.  The prices are pretty much in line as the other options in this category, and although lacking some facilities that have become standard throughout the industry, the uncommon décor and amenities more than make up for it.

A year after my visit, I’m still telling my friends about this place and that is the mark of a good hotel.  It doesn’t have to be the most opulent or most comfortable to be a success.  For true hotel fanatics like myself, this beats the typical hotel “box with a bed” experience at a price that doesn’t over promise what is actually being delivered.  I applaud The Planet Hotel for stepping into the Guangzhou Hotel market with such a bold attempt.   The company has ambitions to expand their brand and I’m looking forward to future offerings from this lodging group.

Analysis and Outlook of China’s Bee Products Export in the First Half of 2024
Tumblr media
The first half of 2024 marked a robust period for China's bee product export market. Between January and July, China exported 96,710 tons of bee products (excluding beeswax) to 91 countries and regions, with a total export value of $177.91 million. This represents a year-on-year increase of 8.56% in export volume and 0.85% in value. These figures reflect not only the solid demand for Chinese bee products but also the competitive advantages China has carved out in global markets. This article will delve into the performance of China's bee product exports in the first half of 2024, covering key products, major export markets, challenges, and opportunities, and providing a comprehensive outlook for the second half of the year. China's Bee Product Export Growth: A Positive Trajectory China's bee product export growth during the first seven months of 2024 indicates strong demand for honey, royal jelly, bee pollen, and other related products. The 8.56% increase in export volume highlights the success of China's bee product industry in meeting the evolving demands of global consumers. Despite modest growth in export value, the ability to maintain an upward trajectory demonstrates the sector's resilience in the face of changing global market conditions. Factors Contributing to Growth Several factors have contributed to this steady growth: - Global Health Trends: The increasing global demand for natural and organic health foods has driven up consumption of bee products, especially honey and bee pollen, which are known for their health benefits. Honey, in particular, is valued for its antibacterial properties, antioxidants, and ability to boost the immune system, making it a staple in households worldwide. - Product Diversification: China's bee product portfolio includes honey, royal jelly, bee pollen, and other derivative products, each catering to specific market needs. The diversification of these products has allowed Chinese exporters to tap into various segments of the global market, from health-conscious consumers to the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. - Advanced Production Techniques: China has invested in modern beekeeping and honey production techniques, which have resulted in higher quality products. The adoption of eco-friendly and sustainable practices has also made Chinese bee products more appealing to international buyers, especially in countries where sustainability is a key purchasing factor. - Global Economic Recovery: As the world recovers from the disruptions caused by the pandemic, consumer demand for premium and healthy food products, including honey, has risen. China's competitive pricing and large-scale production capacity have positioned it as a key supplier in this growing market. Major Export Destinations Between January and July 2024, China's bee products found their way to 91 countries and regions, with Japan, the UK, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Australia, Portugal, and Ireland standing out as the main export destinations. The consistent demand from these countries not only contributed to the overall growth of China's bee product exports but also solidified China's position as a leading player in the global bee product market. Key Highlights from Top Markets: - Japan: Japan has long been a major importer of Chinese bee products, particularly royal jelly and honey. The country's emphasis on health and wellness aligns with the benefits of bee products, making China a reliable supplier. - United Kingdom: With its growing focus on organic and natural products, the UK has become a prime destination for Chinese honey. The post-Brexit trade environment has also led to new opportunities for direct trade between China and the UK. - Saudi Arabia: As one of the largest markets for premium honey, particularly Sidr honey, Saudi Arabia remains a crucial export destination. Chinese honey products, known for their quality and affordability, have gained a strong foothold in the Saudi market. - Belgium and Spain: These European countries have shown an increasing interest in bee pollen and other derivative products, particularly for use in the cosmetics and health supplement sectors. China's ability to meet these demands has fostered stronger trade ties with these nations. Export Performance by Product Type 1. Honey Exports: The Backbone of China's Bee Product Industry Honey remains the most significant contributor to China's bee product export market. In the first half of 2024, honey exports reached 94,540 tons, accounting for the bulk of the total bee product exports. The value of these exports was $149.82 million, reflecting year-on-year growth of 8.41% in volume and 2.07% in value. This consistent growth can be attributed to China's ability to offer high-quality honey at competitive prices, making it a preferred choice in international markets. Additionally, Chinese honey's reputation for purity and natural processing methods has helped maintain its strong market position. Competitive Advantages: - Wide Variety: China produces and exports a diverse range of honey, including multi-floral, acacia, jujube, and Sidr honey. This product diversity allows China to cater to different market preferences. - Sustainable Practices: Increasingly, Chinese honey producers are adopting sustainable beekeeping methods, which appeal to eco-conscious consumers in regions like Europe and North America. 2. Royal Jelly Exports: Navigating Market Challenges While honey exports have experienced steady growth, royal jelly exports have faced challenges in the first half of 2024. Overall export volumes and values have decreased, likely due to increased competition from other suppliers and changes in demand patterns. However, there are still bright spots for royal jelly. In July, exports to Japan and Spain increased significantly, suggesting that there is still a niche market for this product in certain regions. Royal jelly, prized for its anti-aging properties and rich nutrient content, continues to hold value in the cosmetics and health supplement industries. 3. Bee Pollen Exports: Rapidly Growing Demand Bee pollen has emerged as a fast-growing product in China's bee export portfolio. In the first seven months of 2024, the export volume and value of bee pollen increased significantly. This surge in demand is likely driven by the growing awareness of bee pollen’s health benefits, including its protein content, vitamins, and antioxidants. European countries, in particular, have shown a growing interest in bee pollen, especially in the organic and health food sectors. This trend is expected to continue as consumers seek out natural supplements and superfoods. 4. Other Bee Products: Mixed Performance Other bee products, including propolis and beeswax, have seen mixed performance in 2024. While overall export volumes and values have declined, certain markets continue to provide a stable foundation for these products. For example, propolis remains in demand in countries where it is used for medicinal purposes due to its antimicrobial properties. Challenges in China's Bee Product Exports Despite the positive growth seen in the first half of 2024, China's bee product export market faces several challenges: - Global Competition: Countries like Argentina, Mexico, and New Zealand have emerged as strong competitors in the global honey market. These nations offer premium honey products, often marketed as organic or ethically sourced, which can compete with Chinese offerings in certain markets. - Environmental Concerns: The global decline in bee populations, driven by habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change, poses a long-term challenge to the bee product industry. China, like other countries, must work to protect its bee population to ensure the sustainability of its bee product exports. - Trade Uncertainties: Geopolitical tensions, shifting trade policies, and the rise of protectionism in key markets like Europe and the United States could impact China's ability to maintain its current export growth. Changes in tariffs, trade agreements, or regulations could create obstacles for Chinese exporters. Outlook for the Second Half of 2024 The outlook for China's bee product exports in the second half of 2024 remains optimistic. Several key trends are expected to shape the market: - Increased Demand for Health Foods: As global health trends continue to evolve, the demand for natural and organic products, including bee products, is likely to rise. Consumers are increasingly looking for foods that promote wellness, and bee products, with their numerous health benefits, are well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. - Sustainability Initiatives: The focus on sustainable and eco-friendly products will play a crucial role in maintaining and expanding China's market share. Producers that can demonstrate environmentally responsible practices may gain a competitive edge, particularly in markets like Europe, where sustainability is a top priority. - Diversification of Product Offerings: Expanding the range of bee products offered to the market, such as premium honey varieties and innovative bee-based health supplements, will allow Chinese exporters to cater to evolving consumer preferences. - Adapting to Global Competition: To stay competitive, Chinese exporters will need to focus on product quality, certification standards, and innovative marketing strategies that highlight the unique benefits of Chinese bee products. In conclusion, the first half of 2024 has demonstrated the resilience and growth potential of China's bee product export industry. With a positive market outlook and increasing global demand for health-focused products, China is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory. However, exporters must remain vigilant in addressing the challenges posed by competition, environmental factors, and shifting trade policies. Read the full article

Why Choose Singapore for Education? Singapore's education system is globally recognized for its high standards and rigorous curriculum. The country's strategic location in Asia, coupled with its vibrant multicultural environment, makes it an ideal destination for students from around the world. By studying in Singapore, students gain access to world-class educational institutions and a rich cultural tapestry that enhances their learning experience.
Researching Schools and Programs The first step in your journey is to research the various schools and programs available in Singapore. Renowned institutions such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Singapore Management University (SMU) offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. When choosing a school, consider factors such as the curriculum, faculty expertise, campus facilities, and the institution's overall reputation.
Understanding the Application Process Applying to schools in Singapore involves several key steps. First, ensure you meet the admission requirements, which may include standardized test scores (e.g., SAT, GRE), English proficiency tests (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL), and academic transcripts. Once you have gathered the necessary documents, submit your applications through the respective university websites. Be mindful of application deadlines and any additional requirements specific to each institution.
Navigating Visa and Immigration Requirements International students need a Student's Pass to study in Singapore. After receiving an offer from a Singaporean educational institution, you can apply for a Student's Pass through the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) website. The process involves submitting an online application, paying the required fees, and undergoing a medical examination. Ensure you have all the necessary documents, such as your passport, academic transcripts, and proof of financial ability.
Accommodation Options for Students Finding suitable accommodation is a crucial aspect of moving overseas. Singapore offers various housing options, including on-campus dormitories, private rentals, and student hostels. On-campus housing provides convenience and easy access to university facilities, while private rentals offer more independence. Websites like PropertyGuru and 99.co list available rental properties, catering to different budgets and preferences. Student hostels, located near universities, offer a blend of convenience and community support.
Cost of Living in Singapore Living in Singapore can be expensive, so it’s important to budget wisely. Key expenses include accommodation, food, transportation, and miscellaneous costs. On average, students can expect to spend between SGD 800 to SGD 2,000 per month on accommodation, depending on the type and location. Food costs range from SGD 300 to SGD 500 monthly, while transportation expenses are approximately SGD 150. Setting a realistic budget and managing your finances effectively will help ease the financial pressure of living in Singapore.
Embracing Singapore's Multicultural Environment Singapore's rich multicultural environment provides a unique and enriching experience for international students. Participating in local festivals such as Chinese New Year, Deepavali, and Hari Raya Puasa allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions. Understanding and respecting local customs, such as removing shoes before entering homes and addressing elders appropriately, will help you integrate seamlessly into the community.
Staying Informed and Connected Keeping abreast of local news and events is essential for adapting to life in Singapore. Follow reputable news sources like Channel NewsAsia and The Straits Times to stay informed about current affairs and community happenings. Engaging with local student organizations and attending university events can also help you build a social network and feel more connected.
Maximizing Educational Opportunities Singapore’s strategic location as a global business hub provides numerous opportunities for students to engage with diverse industries and organizations. Many multinational companies have regional headquarters in Singapore, offering valuable internship and research collaboration opportunities. This exposure allows students to gain practical insights into global business practices and build professional relationships that can benefit their future careers.
