Midnight Binge: The Nevers (Mid-Season Final)
Beautifully crafted, witty, magical, and filled with secrets, The Nevers, an HBO show created by Joss Whedon (who stepped down as director/executive producer in November 2020), is an epic tale that follows a growing group of Victorian women and minorities (as well as those living on the fringes of London society) who find themselves in the possession of special powers. On today’s midnight binge, we’re taking a look at the world, people, politics, and the production of The Nevers.
Obviously, spoilers!
Tumblr media
THE TOUCHED
After an unprecedented event in London gives women and minorities remarkable abilities, the Touched, as they are called, or at other times, the afflicted. They resort to living at an orphanage because of their turns (or powers) called St. Romaulda’s Orphanage, which becomes a home and sanctuary for the Touched. This sanctuary is sponsored by Lavinia Bidlow, the wealthy benefactor who has ulterior motives behind keeping a close eye on the touched. The sanctuary is run by Amalia True, who not only can see the future but tries to keep her charges safe while harboring her own secrets that she keeps very tight to her chest.
Tumblr media
The Touched are typically women, or individuals, who live on the fringes of society. Their turns differ from one person to another. There is healing, premonition, molecular alterations and manipulation, and the ability to see and manipulate electricity. There is uncertainty surrounding how a turn is chosen for a person, i.e. why does one person see electricity over causing something to explode? Is it similar to the way Inhumans from the Marvel Universe (shows like S.H.E.I.L.D and Inhumans), in which the power is created because the world needs it, as in fixing a lack of balance? Or is it genetics or even personality-based? Or somehow wholly random? Because we sort of know-how, the turns were giving out and even a bit of why.
The manifestation of the Touched flips the hierarchy or more specifically the patriarchy, on its head, and unfortunately because of the kinds of people that ended up getting turns, women, immigrants, and other types of people who live at the fringes of society basically those who are seen as less than or inconsequential in society. This splits people into factions and even radicals, including Lavinia, and the ins and outs of London politics, which is being spearheaded by an ex-military and high government official, Lord Gilbert Massen.
THE GALANTHI
The Galanthi are an alien race who flew over London causing the Touched. Their mission was to give humans the means to save a ravaged Earth. Like how London is split into fractions, so were the military organizations that were against or for the Galanthi doing what they were doing, the Planetary Defense Coalition (PDC) who were for, and FreeLife Army who were against. The FreeLife Army attacked the Galanthi and killed 19 after bombing their project stations. The last station was run by a woman named Zephyr who committed suicide which allowed her soul to be placed on the last ship. Amalia, then Mary, was Touched just as she committed suicide which allowed Zephyr to enter her body and they changed their name to Amalia True.
PRODUCTION
HBO’s The Nevers was announced for a series in July 2018. Whedon became the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. A bidding war started between a number of stations, including Netflix, before being picked up by HBO. Executive producers and writers included Bernie Caulfield, Jane Espenson, and Doug Petrie and later Laurie Penny, Melissa Iqbal, Madhuri Shekar, Kevin Lau, Daniel S. Kaminsky, and Hennah Sekandary. In November, Whedon stepped down as showrunner, director, and executive director, stating “unprecedented challenges” and exhaustion as his reason for stepping back. However, he was “deeply proud of the work” on The Nevers. Whedon was replaced by Philippa Goslett as the new series showrunner. Gemma Jackson would serve as a production designer and Christine Blundell as a make-up designer.
CAST
Laura Donnelly (Claudia Black), Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, Zackary Momoh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Nick Frost, Elizabeth Berrington, Viola Prettejohn, Anna Devlin, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Ben Chaplin, Ella Smith, and Vinnie Heaven were billed as the main cast as The Nevers.
FILMING
Filming, production, and principal photography started in 2019. Locations varied in London, such as Trinity Church Square, Southwark Borough, New Wimbledon Theatre, Charterhouse Square, The Mall, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Historic Dockyard Chatham, and more. In January 2020, filming took place at the Joyce Grove country house estate; January also saw production and filming temporarily cease because of COVID-19. Scenes had to be reworked to accommodate new rules and regulations because of COVID restrictions, such as the Maladies execution scene, which utilized CGI effects and green screen methods to make it seem like more people within the given space. It also saw the set be rebuilt entirely on a soundstage because they couldn’t film on location. Production and filming were picked up again around September and wrapped up for its mid-season final.
Originally, season one was meant to have ten episodes. However, that was scarped for a two-part season, allowing for a mid-season final at episode six. As of June 11, 2021, The Nevers has not been picked up for a second season, nor has it been canceled.
CONCLUSIONS
I’ve enjoyed The Nevers so far and it was just getting good with its mid-season final. However, the first few episodes were a bit bumpy, and the foundation is built, but it’s taking some time to stitch everything together cohesively. I have hopes for the later episodes and do wish for a second season. I rate the show thus far a 3.9/5, I always give a bit of leniency when it comes to the first season of any show because nothing is really fleshed out. There are very few first seasons of the series I thoroughly enjoyed with little complaint, but I have high ambitions for this show and desire to see it do better.
What are your thoughts on The Nevers? Do you like it, or do you have some issues with the show?
UPDATE
As of December 16th, 2022, The Nevers has been canceled and subsequently pulled from its streaming platform (HBO Max).

Tator tot hot dish
Tumblr media
Add the ground turkey, mushrooms, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally and breaking up the turkey with a wooden spoon, until the turkey is no longer pink, 5–6 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly golden, 9–10 minutes. Heat the oil in a large (at least 4-quart) pot-such as the Cravings braiser-over medium heat. Published by Clarkson Potter, an imprint of Random House. Photographs copyright © 2021 by Alex Lau. Copyright © 2021 by Christine Diane Teigen. Oh, and it serves approximately one-point-six thousand people. If we can ever go outside again this will be one of those things you take to a family brunch, one that will knock you out so you don’t have to hang out with that annoying uncle for the rest of the afternoon. We know this one is good because we gathered around it and destroyed it in 48 seconds flat. To me, ours is delicious, but I also have an open mind and I believe in doing it the way you want to do it. (But if you use sausage, f*ck everyone who uses bacon, and vice versa.) You gotta appreciate the passion, but at the end of the day it is tater tots, cheese, and creamy soup. A few things we can agree on: Hotdish always consists of frozen tater tots, creamy condensed canned soup, cheese, onions, and maybe sausage or bacon. I have faced multiple side-eyes for playing fast and loose with it sometimes. To the people of Minnesota, the correct way to make hotdish is a serious business.

☕️ Both fandom and the MCUs dismissal / forgetting of Christine Everhart.
Uggggggh. I have no words to explain how much I hate it, so I’m going to be using a lot of caps xD.
Like. You can get Harley for Tony’s funeral (which is good by me, gave me a lot of feels, etc.), you put GENERAL FREAKING ROSS THERE (WHY?? In which world does that make sense?? THEY DESPISED EACH OTHER. WASN’T IT A ~PRIVATE FUNERAL??). but NOT CHRISTINE??
After she was instrumental to Tony’s origin story? She was the one who prompted him to put on the armour for his FIRST heroic arc, who goaded him with the pictures, who told him she had actually believed him in the conference (and here I make a pause for my random shippy feels because SHE BELIEVED HIM. MY HEART).
And frankly? The dismissal is 100% because she had sex with Tony, and that made them see her as shallow and unprofessional (because in their minds sleeping with him means she didn’t truly believe in her criticism of him which?? I disagree, and I don’t know how you can sit and watch the rest of the film and still believe that). And Iron Man 2 totally contributed to this by adding her in just for that bs “using Hammer as an in to get to Tony” bs. Like, IMO it was to interview him, period, but still. I really wish her role there had been bigger, that she’d gotten curious about something being off with Tony, etc. But I guess three whole female characters with influence on the plot were just Too Much for one movie RME.
It pisses me off because I love her role so much in Iron Man and, like I say, that bs reading can’t sustain itself with the rest of the film. Her immediate reaction when she woke up in Tony’s house was snooping around, obviously to get some info. And yes, she and Pepper took digs at each other. But her next appearances were a.) in the gala where, as I said, she’s who pushed Tony into his first act as an actual superhero, and b.) the conference at the end, where she, AGAIN, pushed him to step up as Iron Man (the novelization quote on this is great because Tony is thinking about his own speech about transparency etc., WHICH AGAIN, Christine has a hand in…). like. SHE KICK-STARTED THIS FRANCHISE IDEC.
I love the WHIH shorts simply because she’s there (they don’t have much else to offer outside a few funny moments, from what I recall lol), but they’re nowhere near enough. Like I said, I wish she had gotten a bigger part in IM2, and a part at all in IM3, because that would’ve tied it all up. But most of all? I wish she’d been in CACW. That film NEEDED a journalist, IMO, someone that could bring the civilian POV in as an objective a way as possible. Imagine how great she could’ve been there: once again being the one that prompted Tony into action, following their pattern; at the talks, maybe interacting with the rest of the Avengers (I would’ve loved a Christine vs Steve showdown, NEGL xD).
Basically, I think it’s very, very basic sexism (both for the sex and because some people probably just dislike she antagonized Tony at all, period. Whatever. She’s driven AND she’s bitchy, and I freaking love it!); fandom isn’t alone there, because like I say, IM2 contributed. But from what I’ve seen around fandom didn’t need the help, because they dismissed her since IM1 anyway ¬¬

FAQ
Here are some questions people ask me often.
May I use clips of your podcast or paragraphs from articles you´v written in my Little Women/Louisa May Alcott thesis or analysis?
Yes you may.
How you got into LMA research?
I´v been a fan of Little Women since I was a child. In 2018 I read the unabridged version and it changed many of my views about the novel and the author. I purchased some Louisa May Alcott biographies and was surprised to find out that there was a real life Laurie and real life Fritz.
What are the episodes you are most proud of?
I am pretty pleased with all of them. The first collaboration I did with Emily Lau called “150 year Laurie problem”  got lots of feedback Some people even pointed out to me how important it was for them since they had been attacked every time when they critics-ed book Laurie´s behavior (before and after the 2019 film).
I tend to like episodes that handle inter-sectional issues in the society “where is the brown skin Laurie” “Why Friedrich is poor, LMA´s views on wealth” etc.
Where do you find information?
I use lots of university databases (you don´t need to be enrolled). I am also blessed to know a great deal of canon fans who have provided me with sources. Somebody told me that they had come across a blog post where “a fan” was ranting how Louisa May Alcott must have hated Germans since Beth catches disease from the Hummels. Then they were happy to come across my video and find out that was bs.
I don´t really see how anyone can read the book and come into that conclusion. I am re-reading Little Men, and Jo´s helper is Nurse Hummel, one of the Hummel kids (that wouldn´t happen if Marches would hate the Hummels, they seem to really like them in the books) :D When I started to do more deeper research I found so many studies on Louisa May Alcott´s love for Germany, that I still I haven´t read all of them.
I tend to be very picky now days on what is that I read or any kind of information that I am consuming. It doesn´t matter if something is written by a fan or an Alcott scholar, if you find something in the lines of “Jo must be gay because she rejected handsome laurie) (quoting Greta Gerwig), those are huge red flags because it´s all based on face value and not on the events in the novel or Louisa´s personal relationships with these men who inspired her characters.
Who are your favorite Alcott scholars?
I find Christine Doyle and Daniel Shealy to be the most legitimate.
Should we even have the teambhaer/teamlaurie/teamspinster discussion?
Since Louisa wanted to marry Henry, rejected Laddie, was very lonely and nothing like a happy spinster, the whole debate has started to feel quite pointless to me.
I guess the real question is when are we going to get adaptations that are loyal to the novel and don´t make a mockery of the author.

Kimika
Most fusion restaurants are characterized by a big swing, and a big miss. The intentions are usually good, and the concepts make sense on paper, but at bat on the plate, they just don’t have the right swing. Kimika is the exception. Chef Christine Lau VERY successfully marries Japanese, and other aspects of regional Asian cuisine, with high end Italian cuisine. She knocks it out of the park! My…

Touch starved Erik is the best Erik! Prompts used where "I don't deserve you." And "Don't leave me." From some list I had saved. This turned out a little angsty at some point, but our Erik is just a complex boy who needs his time to work things out, so the fluff is still in there. Hope you enjoy it!
Couple: Erik (The Phantom of the Opera) x reader. Mainly Lerik and Kerik ksks.
Summary: Erik it's just too edgy to admit to himself that he's longing for for being touched gently and when the reader does so for the first time things go kinda wild.
————————————————————
You sat at the couch at Erik's house, you still weren't so sure if his underground den in the middle of a lake fitted the concept of a (common) house, but the longer you spent down there the less you cared. By now it all had already acquired a sense of familiarity and homely feeling.
You had met Erik a year ago. A few days after what happened with Christine Dae you heard the sceneshifters talking about how they believed to have heard someone wondering down the basements of the Opera the same night The Dae had been abducted and that the whole Opera went crazy. Usually you were a really quiet person, and prefered to stay out of trouble but that day curiosity took the best of you. And by the sunset you were already under the fifth basement of the Opera Populaire.
You got lost many times, and many others you almost got killed by a trap, but at some point you came across an underground lake with a jetty where a small boat was tied. Without much thinking you got inside the boat and started rowing, not really knowing where you planned to get to. To your surprises after what seemed like a few hours of rowing aimlessly you could get a glimpse of some faint lights in the middle of a cave. Suddenly your strength came back to your already numb arms and you got to land in less that ten minutes.
You glanced around curiously. A voice inside your head was wondering what were so many candles doing down there, and most importantly, how they had gotten there but another voice onside you, the curious one who seemed to had just awakened today, told you to follow the path they seemed to mark.
As if in a dream you started walking, not really aware of what your body was doing. You felt like floating. It seemed as if you were in between a dream and reality, and that the glimmering candles told your body to follow them to wherever they lead to.
Eventually you got to what seemed to be a door and opening it, still not being completely responsible of your actions, you walked into what seemed to be a living room. You snapped out of your slumber because of the state of the room. Furniture had been flipped and pushed to the ground, the floor had vanished under a layer of what seemed to be shattered scores and glasses. Every room you walked into looked exactly the same.
Your heart almost escaped your chest when you found what seemed to be a room with a coffin laying at the floor. With fearful steps you finally made it to the casket where a beautiful cat laued inside. You kneeled in front of it and tried to pet it, but the animal simply held your glance for a few seconds before storming out of the room. Fearing for it to get hurt you chased it to one of the rooms that you hadn't already looked at. The first thing that you noticed was that next to the doorframe there was a switch, and you cursed yourself for not looking for them sooner. When the light turned on you couldn't believe your eyes.
There was what seemed to be a corpse laying at the floor. By how it looked you would have given it for dead, if it wasn't because the closer you got the more noticeable it became that the "corpse" was breathing, with some difficulty, but breathing.
It all hit you in a second. The Corpse Like Man that everyone had believed to be the Opera ghost, the spectrum that had hunted the Opera Garnier for years. It was alive, even if it did look dead. It was a living man who lived under the Opera and who had played with you all this whole time. A man who coughed violently and seemed to be bleeding out of a wound at his body, who wouldn't make it much farther if you didn't help him out at that moment.
When you finally came out of your thoughts you went to assist him. Despite the seriousness of his injuries and the apprehension that you felt about touching him the first times eventually you got him patched up. You also carried him to the bed you had found in one of the rooms without much of a trouble once you figured out that whatever it was the reason behind his looks, it wasn't contagious.
It took you some weeks to get him to be fully conscious and for him to have enough strengths to stand up for himself. The moment that happened he was furious with you. He shouted and yelled, cursing you for saving his life and making you leave the lake house, threatening you with your death if you ever came down to find him again.
But that didn't stop you. And eventually you didn't just come to make sure that he was okay and that he hadn't killed himself but because you enjoyed his company. At the same time the man, who responded to the name Erik had began to open up to you, allowing you two to become closer.
It all felt so far away in time now. As if it had taken place years ago. Erik and you became friends eventually and you felt like the two of you had developed some kind of unspoken relationship. But you never dared to speak with him about it, not after knowing what had happened with Christine. You didn't want to bring back any painful memories to Erik, and he had many.
Talking about Erik, you hadn't heard him nor seen him in the whole evening. You thought as you started to pack your things in your bag. You wished you had been able to spend more time together today, but he must have been busy to ignore your presence so abruptly.
As you got ready to leave you heard one of the many doors behind you opening up and turned around to see the man you had been thinking about walking out of a room, who was priming the sleeves of his suit. Erik looked up to you and his face seemed to have lightened up under the mask that he stubbornly kept wearing around you, even after you had told him several times that his face didn't disgust you any longer.
-My beloved- he spoke, opening his arms in a welcoming expression -what brings you down here at this lovely evening? Have you come to visit your poor Erik?
You shook your head when you heard how he addressed himself, it pained you at your heart. Holding your bag in your hands you swung slightly on your tiptoes in a playful way before answering him.
-Truth is I've been here the whole evening. But you seemed to be busy and I didn't want to disturb you. Actually, I was getting ready to make my way out.
The smile on Erik's lips faded away and a pout took it place. Erik did not let his disappointment go unnoticed and looked straight at your eyes before speaking in the saddest voice he could find -Oh, but why must you go? Don't leave me this early, my dear.
You chuckled at his manners, even when upset he was extremely theatrical. It may be the same with every men that advocated their life to their Opera's and music, you thought. The theatrical manners were a part of them.
-I'm coming back tomorrow, and you know it. No need to throw a tantrum over my departure.
You joked. Erik played along and placing a hand to his chest, as if he had been incredibly offended he went on.
-You insult me, miss. A man like me, throwing a tantrum as a mer infant?
-It wouldn't be the first time, would it darling?- you pointed out with a giggle.
-Touché- the masked man answered, accepting his defeatment with composure and dignity.
Your cheeks turned a soft red because of the playful flirting, which took place whenever you spoke to eachother. You placed one of your locks behind your ear nervously. The butterflies inside your stomach making you feel once more as if you were back to being that young teen who would snick out with all the other ballerinas to watch the handsome actors getting changed for the shows.
Without thinking twice you walked closer to Erik, who's look of surprise you didn't seem to catch, and placed a soft peck at the corner of his lips leaning on his shoulders to get to his face. You left Erik startled by your actions and it wasn't till you were back in front of him, looking straight at his eyes, that you realized what you had done.
-Oh! Erik I- you tried to excuse yourself, but the damage was already done, and you felt his anger rising and increasing as seconds passed by.
-Damn you!- he screamed- DAMN YOU, YOU LITTLE VIPER! Oh how funny of you. Haven't I've been hurt enough for you to play such tricks on me!?!- he said, pacing around you like a hunger lion over his prey.
-Erik, darling, I didn't mean to- you attempts of calming him down fell on deaf ears because Erik headed against you with all the rage he had locked inside.
-How cruel of you! Playing with a broken man's poor heart! You know fully well that poor unhappy Erik doesn't deserve you! But still you choose to play with my feelings. Only to end up leaving me behind, just as that Swedish girl did!
Tears had formed at your eyes as he spoke his hateful words. It was not till he stormed out of the room and locked himself that you allowed yourself to cry. Collapsing at the sofa where you had been sitting not so long ago and crying your heart out.
Hours had passed by when you heard a door opening. You did not need to open your eyes nor to stand up from the sofa to face the door in order to know that it was Erik the one who had come out of it. You heard his slowed down steps as he came closer and closer to you, like a frightened child about to confront his mother after having misbehaved. When he was finally standing in front of you, head down to the floor, he dropped to his knees, tugging at the hem of your dress while crying over your lap. You hands found their way to his head, where you started playing with the few strands of his hair in an attempt to calm him down.
When Erik had finally stopped sobbing and you two were now laying together, him on top of you, at the sofa. Erik's masked face was hidden at the croock of your neck as he clinged to your body with all his strengths, as if he was scared that you would disappear if he loosened his hold on you.
Whe Erik dared to cautiously look up at your face, in case that you were still mad at him.
-(Y/N)...- he asked, almost in a whisper. You looked back at him
-Yes?
Erik swallowed, he swallowed hard, doubting if he should go on with what he had thought.
-I- I wanted to ask you for something...
It was the first time since you had ever met that Erik was asking for something for himself. So you stood up slightly, making sure that Erik was still laying over you, wearing the softest smile you could to encourage him to keep going. Oh, you were so eager to get him whatever he asked for.
-What is it, dear?
Erik let out a shaky breath, and bitting his misshapen lip he found the courage enough to speak.
-Can you give me two kisses?- he asked a child like ring at his voice -one for now and one to save?
Tears made their way to your eyes once more. The fact that all he was asking for so fearfully was nothing more but a kiss tore your heart open.
With watery eyes you knelt on the stomach and pulled Erik up with you to later throw yourself at your poor man, taking his lips between yours without hesitation. The kiss took Erik by surprise, but even if he was a little astonished at the beginning he ended up melting down in your touch, kissing you back with the same fervour.
When you had to pull apart because of the air loss you took Erik's face between your hands, his blissful eyes looking at you in pure adoration. -You can have as many kisses as you want, my love. Now and ever. No need to ask for them.
Erik's mouth formed a big o, and his eyes looked watery behind his mask. A soft smile spread across his features before he pushed you against his chest, were you buried yourself, hugging eachother lovingly.

@laufire tagged me in a "Top 10 female characters post" (thank you!), but instead of putting characters from my fandoms, I decided to rate my female OCs from both Pandora's Key (PK) and The Montgomery Chronicles (TMC)
1. Pandora Adelardi (PK)- this was a tough one, but I think Pandora is my ultimate power fantasy? Plus, her arc is pretty clear for me (aka she gets everything she wants, sorry I couldn't resist) which is not the case with any of the others.
2. Savannah Black (TMC)- like I said, it was hard to place her second, but, unlike with Pandora, I still have to figure out the emotional ~bits in her arc that will lead her to her endgame
3. Bellamy Montgomery (TMC) - probably the easiest character to write and the most entertaining one as well. The only reason why she's not higher is because she's almost my polar opposite
4. Juno Darcy (TMC) -probably the only one of these people I'll want to meet in real life. That says everything about her, imo.
5. Meissa Fabbri (PK) -I love writing her and her (rather complex for a 15 years old) motivations and thought process
6. Christine Leclair (PK) -rates surprisingly low, considering she's the most prominent POV character in PK
7. Rongyu Montgomery (TMC) -a ghost and my fave "not wise mentor". Since I decided she'll be played by the actress that plays Cao Danshu in Serenade of Peaceful Joy, I have a lot of thought and headcanons (tho, she's my character) about her
8. The First Raven (TMC) - cult leader who is barely developed (she doesn't even have a name yet), but I put here just because. I might also make her flirt with Bellamy, bc lau made me see the horrible mess that is T100 fandom and I want to be a troll
9. Daphne Wilde (TMC) -the main human antagonist, Tristan's fiancee and horrible person overall. Yet, I can't develop her for some reason. Maybe a fancast will help
10. Verity Mao (TMC) -idk what role she'll play in the story, but I am soft for her bc she's probably the sanest and nicest character here.
Oops, forgot to tag people. The original post was top 10 favourite female characters, not OCs, if anyone wants to do it. I'll just tag @alannisterpoisouslove @marta-elentari @mydaylightruyi @thatsanotherlovestory @catharticallysarcastic
