In the Cold Light of Day
In the Cold Light of Day
When Rockefeller Center’s design was unveiled in 1931, New Yorker architecture critic Lewis Mumford wrote that it followed ”the canons of Cloudcuckooland.” Dec. 23, 1933 cover by Helen Hokinson. Today we know 30 Rock as one of the most iconic and beloved places in Manhattan, but after Mumford saw the plans for this future “Radio City” he went into exile in upstate New York, upset over the “weakly…

I just read an excerpt from a book discussing the different adaptations of Little Women. One of the details it pointed out about the 1933 version with Katharine Hepburn is how excited the March sisters get over simple material pleasures. For example, their excitement over the sausages and popovers at breakfast on Christmas morning (before they give them away to the Hummels), and the way they all squeal ecstatically over Mr. Laurence's gift of his granddaughter's piano to Beth. The later filmed versions of these scenes tend to be more subdued, and this book suggested that the reason for the difference is because the 1933 version was filmed during the Great Depression. To the audiences of the time, the March family's poverty was more real and relatable, and the sheer excitement of special holiday foods or a gift that they could never have afforded was more strongly felt.
Reading that analysis made me better appreciate similar acting choices in the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol. More than in any other version I know, the Cratchit children's happy clamoring and cheering over their Christmas goose and pudding is positively wild. I always thought it was a little over-the-top. But maybe not. Even though the Depression was nearing its end by 1938, it probably still made the Cratchits' poverty feel closer to home. The excitement of a poor family feasting on such rarely-afforded treats as roast goose and plum pudding was probably all the more vivid for the cast, crew, and audiences.
When we're comparing adaptations, the historical context of each version is always good to remember.

"The most impressive aspect of the flight was [when] we were in lunar orbit. We’d been going backwards and upside down, didn’t really see the Earth or the Sun, and when we rolled around and came around and saw the first Earth rise. [T]hat certainly was, by far, the most impressive thing. To see this very delicate, colorful orb which to me looked like a Christmas tree ornament coming up over this very stark, ugly lunar landscape..." Bill Anders, Apollo 8 LMP, on his thoughts about taking the iconic Earthrise photograph.

More Conrad propaganda: He fled Germany with his Jewish wife Lili in 1933 but helped get her parents into Switzerland and in 1935 got his ex-wife (also Jewish) and their daughter Viola out of Germany. He also tried to get his ex-MIL out but she refused to leave.
During the war he bought candy for the children of London for Christmas 1940. He was apparently the only actor to donate to the children directly that Christmas.
He was a nice guy! And very pretty and very good at his job!

Until the Pearls Get Lost by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup
London, 1933. Harry Styles, alpha, elusive bachelor and happy third wheel to his coupled friends, receives a visit from one Liam Payne, begging for his help.
Liam’s childhood friend Louis is about to become the talk of the city; left at the altar because the mating bond was rejected, Louis will spend the rest of his life in an institution unless Liam can find someone to take him in and care for him as he recovers. Most omegas with failed bonds are never the same again.
With rumours swirling around about the reason for the rejected bond, Harry gives in to Liam’s pleas. He hasn’t the slightest idea how that decision will shape the rest of his life.
On This Winter's Night by @reminiscingintherain
When a random bloke offers his lap for a seat on a busy bus in December, Louis' Christmas ends up being much different, and far less lonely than he was expecting.
We'll Be Seamless by @dinosaursmate
Green reblogged an old photo of himself. It was from back in October, a Halloween special. A pulse shot all the way through Louis because this photo was his absolute favourite, and it had taken the rest of the year for him to wean himself off of it.
Green was on his knees, arms stretched out in front of him with his fingertips digging into the surface of his bed. He was wearing a pair of cat ears on his head, his curls falling forward. His back was arched, and in the foreground of the picture, Green’s bum was high in the air, a long, black cat tail sitting neatly between his cheeks. --- Louis spends all his spare time scrolling arty nude blogs on Tumblr but amongst them all, Green is his favourite.
