THE BEST WRITTEN SONGS OF ALL-TIME
Because I have zero innate musical ability, the idea that someone can sit down with a musical instrument, and create an original song out of thin air is magic to me. Songwriting is a craft, but it’s inspiration that makes a good song into a great one. There are songwriters who seem able to turn out high quality songs in perpetuity. There are others who write maybe one or two great songs, and are never heard from again. So, I made a list of what I think are the 50 best written songs I’ve ever heard. These are in no particular order. I’ve listed the title followed by the songwriter or songwriters, and in parentheses is the performer I most enjoy hearing do the song – although most of these songs have been recorded countless times by a variety of artists. You can probably find all of these on YouTube or any of the streaming services. Most have lyrics, but some do not. But, it’s hard for me to imagine any of these songs being recorded by anyone with talent, and not retaining the brilliance with which the song was written.

"Blue Moon" (not specially from Kentucky)
"Blue Moon" is a song first release in 1934, written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and has become a standard ballad. Early recordings included those by Connee Boswell and by Al Bowlly in 1935. The song was a hit twice in 1949, with successful recordings in the U.S. by Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé. — Wikipedia
— "Blue Moon" by Connee Boswell (1935)
This ballad was recorded and performed by many artists over the years including Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, The Platters, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and many others, including our dear Elvis Presley.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first time I ever heard a bit of the song "Blue Moon" tho, was performed by actress Rebecca Lee Meza who played young Selena Quintanilla in the movie about the Mexican-American star, "Selena" released in 1997 — *Talk about Jennifer Lopez in that role! She's stunning and so lovely!* — I love that movie beyond words because it's a childhood memory I hold dear, watching this movie with my mom and sister, and I also got to know what Selena Quintanilla meant (who sadly was murdered the very year and month I was born, March 1995. I was just a few weeks old.). Later in life, when I was old enough to make my own choices, I got to learn and appreciate Selena's real self, her songs, admiring her career, her beauty, her talent and charisma, and that I do 'til this very day. The movie did great in portraying her life, but then... the song became something more to me — I'll get there but I wanted to share the the videos and other version of "Blue Moon".
— Oldies Medley: "Blue Moon/We Belong Together" from "Selena" movie (1997)
I didn't find a recorded version with Selena's real vocals, but The Vidal Brothers recorded the song which was featured in the opening credits in "Selena" (1997 movie). The song Selena used to sing as a child was an arragement by Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father and manager. He performed the song when he was a member of the male group "The Dinos" in the 60s. He then passed it to Selena and her siblings, "Los Dinõs", who used it in home rehearsals, as the movie "Selena" (1995) shows (the scene above).
Abraham Quintanilla about The Vidal Brother's version below:
"This are the Vidal brothers from Kingsville texas, I brought them to Q productions Recording Studios taught them the kind of harmonies we used to do (The Dinos) they done an excellent job and we used their singing for the beginning of the SELENA movie, the song is a cover song that we The Dinos sang back in 1965."
— Mr. Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father. His comment is from 9 years ago, as he left it on this Youtube video with that song.
"Blue Moon" by The Vidal Brothers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I said, "Blue Moon" was a familiar tune to me, which I already appreciated but I just had listened so far to the versions featured on the "Selena" movie. And then just a year ago or so, was the first time I heard Elvis singing that song (man, it happened a few times, listening to Elvis singing songs I knew previously from other artists) and my jaw dropped.
It did hit me home listening to my newfound favorite artist singing a song so dear to me.
"Blue Moon" by Elvis Presley, recorded at Sun Studio on August 19, 1954.
The song was released as single by RCA Victor in 1956 and then featured on Elvis' first LP "Elvis Presley" (1956). The tune gained its rightful place when released on "Elvis: Sunrise" (1999), a compilation album of Elvis Presley's SUN recordings and again on the album "A Boy from Tupelo: The Complete 1953 to 1955 Recordings" (2012).
Sun Records never released Elvis' version on Sun Records. It was among the unused Presley recordings turned over to RCA when it purchased Elvis’ contract in late 1955. It was released, along with three other discarded Sun cuts, on Presley’s first RCA album in March 1956. In September that year, RCA released Blue Moon as a single backed with another Sun recording, Just Because, as part of a mass singles release.
It soon became apparent that of the seven singles, Blue Moon/Just Because was selling the best. In its September 22 issue, Billboard listed that single in both its “Coming Up Strong” and “This Week’s Best Buys” lists. “This disk, with emphasis on ‘Blue Moon,’ is stepping out and starting to move,” Billboard reported.

Some may like Elvis' version, some not, but to me this is an all-time favorite song and Elvis Presley's version is one I'll forever cherish. In spite the sadness in the lyrics, it's a beautiful, loving ballad, and I love his voice on it.
♥
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JUST TO MENTION something I find cool about Selena and Elvis, both artists I high appreciate:
ELVIS AND SELENA AT THE HOUSTON ASTRODOME, HOUSTON, TX [1970/1995]
Selena had a great splendid moment in her career performing at one of the same venues as Elvis, coincidentally the same month even (not the same year tho), a place where he also had one of the greatest moments of his career: The Houston Astrodome, Houston, Texas.
Selena performed there on February 26, 1995. While Elvis was much earlier (and a few times after his first performance there) on February 27, 1970.
Selena - "Como La Flor" at the Houston Astrodome, Houston, TX, on February 26, 1995.
Elvis at the Houston Astrodome, Houston, TX, on February 27, 1970.
In 1970, on February 27, 28 and March 1, Elvis Presley performed six times at the Houston Astrodome, setting a new attendance record - around 180,000 people attended.

The adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne and Garth. From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra. CASTRO 638 - CIA 0
THE PERFECT RECORD
Exploding cigar
Exploding seashell
Exploding podium
Poison capsules
Poisoned writing pen
Poisoned SCUBA suit
Hiring hitmen straight off the FBI's Most Wanted list
These harebrained schemes might call to mind Wil E. Coyote's attempts to ensnare the Roadrunner, but they were in actual fact developed by the so-called intelligence officers at the CIA, with the intention to kill Fidel Castro. Strangely, given the Cuban leader's well-known love for baseball, the brain trust at Langley didn't try to sneak nerve agents into Castro's leather glove or at the very least smear icy hot inside his jock strap.
The Agency came up with a more straightforward assassination plot while concocting the Bay of Pigs invasion, which called for snipers to target the Cuban leader. Those plans collapsed along with the larger invasion after the US withdrew air support, stranding the 1500 insurgents it had trained and financed. Abandoned by the USA, the insurgents surrendered to Castro, which humiliated the United States and lionized Castro among Cubans and anti-imperialists worldwide.
The CIA once again tripped over its own dick when it enlisted Marita Lorenz, one of Castro's lovers. In a 1993 interview with Vanity Fair, Lorenz recounted that after being supplied with deadly pills by the CIA, she faltered when Castro suspected her plans and directly challenged her to take him out, saying:
He leaned over, pulled out his .45, and handed it to me. He didn’t even flinch. And he said, "You can’t kill me. Nobody can kill me." And he kind of smiled and chewed on his cigar ... I felt deflated. He was so sure of me. He just grabbed me. We made love.
Sound far-fetched? So does Lorenz's claim that she rode shotgun to Dallas with rifleman Lee Harvey Oswald. But it's no more ridiculous than tainting a cigar with botulinum toxin, or infecting a wetsuit with tubercle bacilli. By following grandiose planning with inept field work, the CIA gave Castro an air of invincibility, ultimately making him a living folk hero.
Aboard an airplane bound for New York City in 1979, a reporter asked Castro if he was wearing his bulletproof vest. "What vest?" Castro asked. "Everyone says you wear a bullet-proof vest," the reporter said. Castro, heading into a country that had tried to kill him hundreds of times, unbuttoned his olive-green military shirt to reveal his bare chest. He smiled at the reporter and explained, "I have a moral vest."

selections from my week in media [11-17 june 2023]
[anticipating]
The SHINee comeback is so close I can taste it. The skirt suits in the teaser photos they dropped this past week killed me dead. They all look gorgeous.
[listening]
Bouncy / ATEEZ - I’m not sure what I love most about it. Hongjoong’s electric blue hair? The goat? Conga line choreo? Chipmunk effect? Mingi in that hat? Yes to all of it. (But especially the goat.)
[reading]
Heart of the River by meyari - Jiang Yanli pov MDZS elementals fix-it AU - Stayed up way too late reading, but boy was it worth it.
Horns of Light by Morlin Lorenz - A darling little graphic novel about a young cow and her quest for horns. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very sweet, with a touch of fantasy. I have the Kickstarter book, but I’ve linked the webtoon comic.
Old-Fashioned Cupcake by Sagan Sagan - The English language edition of the manga was released this week.
[watching]
Big Dragon - A quick and easy rewatch for when I couldn’t concentrate on new stuff. It was so much better the second time, without the expectations I had going into it and knowing in advance the general tone and quality I was in for. This is why I rewatch shows. They are almost always better the second time through (especially if I originally watched week to week.) I don’t know if we’ll be getting a season two, but I’d love to see the two leads do another project together.
Bokura no Shokutaku, ep 10.5 - I am a bit disappointed we didn’t get the epilogue from the manga. They followed the rest of the book so closely, that I was sure we’d get that last glimpse of the future. Other than that, I liked it as much as the rest of the show. I’m going to miss this little family.
King the Land - Lee Junho! Yoona! Together in a chaebol kdrama! I’ve been looking forward to this since it was announced last year and the first episode did not disappoint. The first ep covered a lot of groundwork, but I think it did it well. We’ve got a good sense of who Yoona’s character is (less so with Junho’s - I have so many questions) and an even better idea of the worlds that they inhabit and how they will intersect. I’m going to really enjoy watching it this summer.
Love Tractor - I’m enjoying it, despite the uneven tone. This might be another one I like better on rewatch when I can run through the episodes all at once.
Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (April in Tokyo is) - I love this show so far. My first impression is that it’s beautifully filmed and the two leads are very comfortable with each other. They’re so easy with each other, it’s a joy to watch them. And the young actors in the flashbacks are also very good. I’m excited to see where the story goes and am resisting looking up the manga it’s based on to see what I’m in for.
Step By Step - Episode 8 was a rollercoaster: a painful break-up; a delightful “not date-date”; moody sunbathing; drunken crying in a bar; and the best lightbulb moment to cap it all off.
